  1. So who should I be rooting for tonight? who matches up the worst against Wisconsin--Michigan or Kentucky?
  2. my blood pressure hurts.
  3. probably just thinking out loud here, but i could work my current job for 11 hrs/day for $140/day which i plan on quitting in two weeks anyway, or take a two week stint as a flyer-hander-outer guy for a TV show scout for $125/day.
  4. a $2 million signing bonus and almost a million more for three years in the Majors. tough he may not end up playing longer, but at least he'll be happy.
  5. I'd like to know what Rob Deer would include on his ideal relish tray.
  6. hmm, i wonder what a Rob Deer baseball camp is like. "Kids, the key to hitting is to close your eyes and just swing really hard." but really i'd be geeked to sign up just for the opportunity to sit down with him and ask him a million questions.
  7. i didn't see too much of the Baylor game, but it seemed like they played a zone really far out to guard against the 3. i don't get the sense from that that we'll get a ton of open looks from long range, but that we can get open shots if we can break it through penetration dribble, which is done pretty much just by Jackson. i think a lot of the game may well depend on his ability to penetrate and kick out.
  8. i have about three weeks to find an apartment out of state to live for not quite five months. it's gonna be close. college apartments only want two-month renters, and i can't sign a year lease. the last guy said he had five showings the next day, so i told him i'd take it sight-unseen, but he didn't respond. i'm aiming for $400/month, and there are yet a few at $550 that i haven't aimed for yet. worse comes to worse, i'll live in a tent for a few weeks. edit: the person who had five apartment showings on Saturday now emailed me and said i could have the apartment. all of a sudden i'm assuming that those five people declined for some reason. i can't be too picky for a five-month lease, but now i wonder what i could be walking into.
  9. holy cow that was a heck of a game. i was never expecting the Badgers to come out of the half the way they did. and moreso, that Oregon never ended up going on a run of their own. i was surprised they didn't end up getting the ball to Kaminsky as much, since he looked like they couldn't figure him out down low, and it would have drawn doubles to kick back out to Brust. actually, almost all the games last night were great games. so who should we be rooting for in the Creighton/Baylor matchup tonight? i don't know if the Badgers always do well against single-star teams and could end up with McBuckets pouring it on the way someone like Craft does.
  10. hopefully it doesn't hurt his confidence, either. dude is fun to watch and a benefit to baseball.
  11. Opening Day is a blast, but i can't afford tickets to MLB anymore.
  12. Milwaukee plays out as almost the opposite of New York or LA, but the small-townish, fans won't mob you, family-friendly atmosphere of Milwaukee must appeal to at least a handful of NBA players. hopefully some good players will really come to appreciate the unique qualities that Milwaukee has to offer. after so many years of misery, if we get a Durant-type of player in here who ends up turning the franchise around and also keeps his nose clean, he's going to be absolutely revered in Milwaukee. maybe better than Robin Yount status, because there are a lot of basketball fans-in-waiting in the City. when the Knicks got Ewing in a lottery that was obviously rigged, did NY at the time at least have a good possibility of landing the top pick, or was it more like when Orlando landed the #1 pick for the second year in a row to nab Chris Webber?
  13. including the option year, there's a $3.8M difference between being drafted #1 and #4. maybe this is a case where it would pay for Embiid to stay in school another year.
  14. cripes, i checked on the game in the 3rd Quarter and it seemed like the Bucks were on the right track, but they had to go and blow it by winning. how is it that when you finally actually want the Bucks to lose, they can't even do that right. boy, just imagine if one or even two players decide to play another year in college, the Bucks end up with the 3rd or 4th pick and we end up with another helper instead of a star.
  15. my folks have a place within walking distance of there. moving to right there would be awesome.
  16. i don't know about that, Jim Gantner hitting two home runs would have been pretty memorable. I know I sure don't remember any:)
  17. i heard the Marlins are putting in a protest of their recent game against the Red Sox. the Marlins had instituted "preferred" pricing for the game since it was against Boston, but Boston fielded what was basically their second-string team with very few stars playing. the price for a great seat for a Marlins' "preferred" Spring Training game? $40.
  18. i figure WI's poor FT shooting kinda balanced out their terrific 3-point shooting. all in all a heck of a game played by Nebraska in a game that they desperately needed. although one WI needed if they were going to lock up a #1 seed, though maybe they still have a chance at it if they can make it to the Tournament Championship game. that may be a stretch at this point, though. but then a 2 seed isn't really a tremendous difference from a 1 seed, anyway.
  19. could the NBA even pretend anymore that it doesn't rig the draft if LA got the first pick? but if they don't get the #1, they can always just pay to have LeBron come there next year.
  20. halibut is too good to deep fry. for a Wisconsin taste, maybe a slight roll in corn meal, no egg or anything, and pan fry it. that should be good. tilapia can be a good/cheap fish to find outside Wisconsin that will taste great with a batter.
  21. lately my father has been referring to me as "my son," as in "Good morning, my son. Welcome to the world." it's tremendously annoying and weird. except saying anything to him about it will make him cry.
  22. i don't have a problem with his drafting. there haven't really been any first-rounders that i had big disagreements with at the time, and he's done a good job finding good second-rounders. Drafting Smart as a Top-3 is the only way he could screw up the coming draft, but him pushing a fan probably took care of that possibility. sure he says it's a playoff-caliber team, but he has to say that to help sell tickets. and you have to wonder how much freedom he really has with Kohl as the owner. i get the sense Hammond is more of an Assistant GM. the conspiracy theorist in me would say that he was told to build an 8-seed team, so he knowingly signed crap-tastic players like Mayo to give the allusion but actually tank for a good pick.
  23. you said you couldn't look into Fort Atkinson. i take it your search is limited to cities along a bus route?
  24. there's also Microsoft classes where you can become certified in things like Office and PhotoShop. if you're not landing as many interviews as your professor thought, it's a possible signal that your resume/cover letter needs some tweaking. i haven't been to one yet, but i know most cities have a monthly young professionals meet at some bar. 30 people asking each other what you do for a living. maybe that's an idea for more networking.
  25. from someone who's done it, grad school isn't the employment door-opener that it once was. in my experience, a grad degree lands you a lot of interviews but lack of experience keeps you from getting the job. also the number of people with MBAs has skyrocketed since this Great Recession hit. i might recommend the same path that i've been taking. i worked a lawn care job last summer which paid three times more than typical summer jobs. even paying for a taxi to and from would be worth it. you'd make enough for a used car with a good amount of savings left over to do an interstate job search. the way i see it, a car and some savings is first priority over landing a full-time job.
