  1. thanks. i feared "it's who you know" would be the answer. it's frustrating i've been here almost three weeks with nothing and all i'm looking for is something part-time. and being here with the father i think that makes him frustrated by me and probably thinking i'm being lazy about it, too. nothing at Plastics Ingenuity, checking a contact at Land's End, applied for an editorial job at American Girl (am a former editor), Gander Mountain and D's Sporting Goods (i'm experienced in retail and the outdoors), and a few others. did the online Gander Mountain thing, maybe today i'll still walk in and try to talk to a manager. edit: i'll add that i used to work at Subway in Middleton and the owner is the current Mayor, Curt Sonnentag. he liked me, but i didn't see him every day and it's been maybe 10 years since i worked there.
  2. i'm thinking along the same lines, that you could sit down with him and give him a deadline to pay you, and that if he doesn't, you'll take him to small-claims court.
  3. i flew first class on Singapore Air from San Francisco once. only plane ride i've been on where i didn't really want to get off the plane. ok, and i don't know if it's because they don't have to pasteurize their orange juice or something, but best orange juice i've ever had! oh man it was good. i didn't even take any booze on the flight, but kept asking for glasses of orange juice. the stewardess thought i was weird. make sure you have some.
  4. i wanna go ahead and as a seemingly-dumb question: how does one go about finding a McJob? i just moved back to Madison and really just need 20 or so hours per week at whatever job. that's enough to give me the time and money to build my professional resume more. 20 years ago you'd walk down the street and look for Help Wanted signs. 10 years ago you'd look in the newspaper. but now? is it a matter of scouring job boards? is it still best to walk in just in case they don't actually send you to their website? do you go to a company's website first and apply there? i'm nervous that i might end up still sitting in front of the computer in two weeks saying "but i haven't found much yet" when i'm not necessarily looking for something fantastic. maybe not McDonalds quite yet, but not a $50K/year job, either. also, how much do you recommend changing up the resume for menial-type work? i currently have a McResume where i don't add my Graduate degree and in place of most professional jobs, i list the smaller jobs i had in between, all to make me look more appropriate for minimum-wage stuff. last year, Wal-Mart almost didn't hire me because i used my professional resume. but since i'm in my mid-30s, i'm obviously not intending to make grocery stocking into a career. so keep the McResume or keep the one that doesn't omit everything?
  5. having the pitcher hit adds so much more depth of strategy to the NL game, with so many more decisions i can question the manager for. the AL game is bland in comparison. the only thing i might change is to add the DH to Minor League games. there's some value to teaching a pitcher how to hit, but not as much as an otherwise-bench player getting four AB to work on his offense when he would otherwise be sitting.
  6. Marlins payroll has now dropped to $16M before arbitration. what a joke. i wonder if Loria gets his revenue-sharing money directly deposited into his bank account or if he has to go to all the trouble of driving to the bank.
  7. Braggs and Greg Brock were my favourite players growing up. i rarely got to watch a game on tv, but i remember one where Glenn Braggs swung at a pitch and missed (naturally), and the bat broke as it wrapped around his back on the follow-through. it was one of the coolest things i'd ever seen.
  8. it does help, actually. i just read that some portion of the transmission is Hyundai-made. i'm reading that 02 Sonatas made later in the year are better than early-year versions. i guess in general the engine mounts are terrible and that there are small electrical failures that happen here and there with the car. i'm actually starting to lean toward the Civic now. Sedona is $1500 cheaper initially, sure. but Civic is more certain to last 20,000 miles longer. assuming the same maintenance needs, Kia parts will be twice as expensive and harder to find, and figuring gas at $4/gal the Civic gets 20 mpg more. so a higher capital cost for the Civic, sure, but probably a better value within a 4/5-year timespan.
  9. i'm trying to decide between a couple of used cars to get. i don't exactly have a lot of money, so price is important. but of course i don't want a situation like i have with my current Tiburon that i have to take it in every three months to fix something on it. the two that i'm debating on... 2003 Civic, 90,000 miles, $7900 sticker. with the way that Civics sell, i probably can't ask for much below $7400 for it, and i'd guess that it probably hasn't had its timing belt changed or fluids replaced at this point. but still it's a model known for its reliability and getting 190,000 miles out of it isn't unreasonable at all for a Civic. 2002 Kia Sedona mini-van, 70,000 miles, $6200. the price is a lot more attractive and maybe i can get it for $5700. i like the idea of a minivan for camping/sleeping in sometimes but the parking ease of a smaller car probably balances that benefit out. i haven't been able to find much information on the reliability of this car, though. $1500 cheaper, sure, but if the Civic would last 50,000 miles longer and not have the same repair costs/frequency, than it would be less of a value in the long run. i'll probably be heading off to get one of the two this evening, and i'm still not totally sure on which of the two might be best. i keep liking the price of that Kia and the idea of getting it paid off a year sooner, but i have a Korean car now (i know, different company) and i'm a bit fearful of the idea of having it in the shop all the time.
  10. the car might get me $1500; it needs a new alternator (it was a new one, but oil drips on it to kill it). i was thinking something in the $5000 range, as my father is there to help me out when I need it (and I'm sure i will) and to co-sign should that also be required. i worry about something cheaper than that because i'd be trading my car problems for somebody else's. i'm not going to town in my car to the dealership right away, but try to get all-but-settled on something and then pay to tow it in. i just lost one of my two jobs (not because of me) and hopefully will find something else soon to get me back to breaking even. i don't want to count on anything, but hopefully it won't be forever until i'm able to land a real job.
  11. i'm sure Hyundais are generally fine and all, but apparently i got one of the bad ones. i have $300 in the bank and no available credit, and tomorrow i have to go out and buy a used car.
  12. car quit working again, and i think it's a major one this time. i have absolutely no money and no way to make car payments, so this'll be interesting. and darn if i only recently paid the thing off, too. $5,000+ of repair work since i've owned it for a car that currently has 130,000 miles. thanks, Hyundai.
  13. my Manager interview today went surprisingly well. a lot of preparation brought a lot of confidence, few nerves, no stumbling and a lot of good answers--even a couple of "that's just what we were hoping to hear." so even if i don't get it, i've become much better at interviews. though if i do get it, i'm suddenly wondering about the support network available (would be a lot of new responsibilities, yet they want someone who "knows everything") nodded to the next interviewee as i was leaving--younger than me and wearing a polo shirt to a managerial interview.
  14. car broke down again. my credit is maxed out and i have $400 in the bank, so i was pretty scared. turned out to be just a battery connection issue that i fixed myself. phew! [to the only other person working at night with me] "hey, my car is dead. any chance i could get a ride home?" "...I don't know where you live and I just don't want to get lost in the middle of town at night." "Oh, ok, no problem. I'll just walk home, then" (it's an 8-mile walk). [upon finding out that he knows exactly where i live]..."Oh, well, I live with my parents and they'll get really worried if I came home late." "Yeah, understand. Have a good night." "Just be careful walking home. It's a pretty bad area at night." "Well, hopefully not tonight."
  15. a year of identical previous experience, a Master's Degree, and i'd even been working there part-time for three months--yet i didn't even make the cut for the in-person interview round for a job that paid $23,000 per year. what's a guy gotta do? but i have an interview coming up for a good job. admittedly it's a bit over my head, so i'm not expecting anything to come of it (though i'll still be prepared and all that stuff). but still, my last three interviews were essentially jobs for 1) cleaning bathrooms, 2) mowing lawns and 3) emptying trash; so at the very least, it's still nice to get this interview to know where i stand in the marketplace and that i'm at least competitive for higher-level jobs in the field. i'm still working to boost my resume, but at least it's good to know it's not entirely me, but that it's just a really lousy marketplace right now.
  16. i just bought a cheap, black bedsheet and nailed it over my window (obviously i rent). not quite as effective as blackout curtains, though.
  17. It's a trap! ask for to much and they won't consider you; ask for too little and you'll be making less than your peers. delay salary stuff for as long as possible. "I expect a salary commensurate with my experience, the responsibilities of the position and the current market rate."
  18. cycling needs to get its act together so that it's not one organization after another asking the same questions. guilty or innocent, he doesn't need to be fighting the same charges again and again. Double Jeopardy, anyone (though i know these aren't all US organizations). still, he's been fighting this stuff since 1999--that's an awful long time. just imagine if the guy was/is innocent, or if he was someone who didn't have the time or money to keep fighting this.
  19. i'm applying for a full-time position at a job where i'm already working part-time. it seems i may have just ruined my chances tonight because a coworker is convinced i did something i certainly did not do, and who was visibly angry with me all night. i truly did a good job tonight, but regardless, i was sent home (not fired, just sent home) looking like a fool.
  20. the hotter the coffee is, the more its smell wafts through the store. it's why McDonalds keeps it that hot and was a big reason why the lady won the lawsuit when she spilled coffee in her lap and burned herself.
  21. thanks, TLB.
  22. think i've gotta move back home to Wisconsin. don't really want to. quit a job and moved here with about $4000 and between slight moving expenses, living expenses and 30 hours per week at $8/hr (pre-FICA) it just hasn't cut it. a month to find the work didn't help, either. rent was due yesterday and i need to make an excuse for an extension until my father's helping check gets here Fri/Sat--i may have to immediately ask for more since i lost 20 working hours this week being sick (they didn't buy that i was just depressed). alternator on the car just went out tonight, too--at least it's only 6 miles to work for the next few days, though at night. also a little bugged at myself right now that i didn't stretch my savings out farther; no cable tv or eating out, just too many little ticky-tack things it looks like. and just nobody is hiring at all to boost my working hours.
  23. i'd go an 8. really happy that Melvin didn't jump for a low-upside MLB-ready package and instead took some players who hopefully will all be really solid contributors in the future. the packages for Pence and Dempster just seemed 'meh,' and Greinke's was the only one that really stood out as solid. i'm pretty sure DM has said that you get more in trade for position players in the offseason than mid-season, so i'll just accept that as truth and judge it just on Greinke and not in combination with ARam and/or Hart.
  24. i think i remember Melvin saying that pitchers have more value at the trade deadline, and hitters have more value being traded in the offseason.
