  1. Not sure what you're saying, I thought you wanted him sent down to the minors, now you want him to stay? 1 or 2 starts a week may not show off his bat, but neither will putting up numbers in Nashville. GMs would rather see some success at the MLB level anyhow. Finally, what do you think his trade value is? There is nothing wrong at all with having a young catcher at a minimal salary controlled for the next 6 years. What if Lucroy gets injured again? Maldondo is far more valuable as a backup ctacher than anything you would get for him in a trade.
  2. I don't understand. You daid Braun is the only guy you would keep for sure, but then at the end you say "absolutely no reason to blow up the team." And you give examples of change at virtually every position. Maybe you don't like the term "blow-up" but that's exactly what you're recommending.
  3. Maldonado staying in Milwaukee is the right move. He's never going to be the starter here. So the sooner he gets used to 1 start a week and some PH opportuntiites, the better. Because as long as he's in the organization, that will be his role.
  4. Exactly. I have no expectations for Henderson, other than he be givena chance. And that goes for any combination of Sanchez, Wooten, Kintzler, Stetter, or anyone else I'm forgetting. May be an extreme move, but I would DFA the entire bullpen other than Axford the day after the trade deadline. See if you can move any of them in the next few days, otherwise gut the pen, and see who may be a keeper for the 2013 season. That's what you need to do with a bad season, take advantage of it by giving others players ytou wouldn't normally play have opportunities, and see what pieces may fit for next year.
  5. I know I'm a broken record, but whenever the pitching staff for next season is mentioned, Burgos is never mentioned. I mean, what else does this guy have to do? Not saying he makes the rotation, but he should be considered and given a look every bit as much as Peralta, Thornburg, and Rogers. Also, rarely see Sanchez and Kintzler mentioned as options for the 2013 pen, and they'll certainly be in the mix come Spring Training.
  6. Since they will keep Braun, Gallardo, Lucroy, etc. I don't consider it a complete tear-down. It's not like what the Marlins, Pirates, etc. have done over the years where they sell-off every taleneted player they have. Lok at it this way. No matter what you want to call it, they have to completely revamp the entire pitching staff for next season. That's not even a choice really. Just a function of 3 starters having their contracts up, and a bullpen that is not very....well they suck. So call it a tear-down, rebuild, whatever. Fact of the matter is they have no choice. As for position players, sure dump guys like Izturis, Morgan, Kottaras, etc. That's really no different than any other year either. Always trying to replace the bottom of the roster with better players. So the only real decision that remains is what to do with Weeks, Hart, and ARam. I think Weeks will/should be back. Then I think you keep one of Hart/ARam. I agree you need one of those guys intheir to have a legit MLB line-up. I guess my point is, there's no reason to debate whther they should blow it up, because in a large way they have no choie but to do that anyhow.
  7. I'm no fan of RR by a long shot. But look at your own comment. WHEN THEY"RE TRYING TO SHOWCASE HIM. You don't think a dominant 7 innings is showcasing him? So he throws another shutout inning, how does that possibly increase his value? And the downside is he gets rocked in the 8th, or worse gets injured. Zero downside taking him out after the 7th. Lots of downside keeping him in another inning.
  8. So glad they rushed to extend RR's contract. Seriously, what was the big hurry? This team is a joke right now. 467 blown saves this year, guys don't know how many outs there are half the time, or the count. Runners getting thrown out on the basepaths constantly. Just pathetic. Absolutely no reason for Krod, Veras, Parra, or Loe to be on this team after 7/31. See if you can find a sucker for any of them then DFA the whole lot. Not only would that be making a statement, it's the right thing to do. Let Henderson, Sanchez, Kintzler... guys like that come up and pitch for a couple months. Why not? It's all about 2013 right now.
  9. I'm not concerned about top prospect lists or various rankings of farm systems. That information is almost always looking back, instead of forward. Prime example, your comment that Peralta is the top prospect. That was true in February, not today. Lots of top prospects flame out, lots of lessor ranked prospects shine. So I'm not that concerned what Baseball America thinks. Rogers needed time to get his velocity up, his innings up, and just get back in the groove again. Perfect example of how you need to look at the whole story when evaluating a player. Burgos isn't on any "expert's" top prospect list. Yet he's been dominant all year. Yes, dominant. Fiers was nowhere near a top prospect and has been outstanding. THAT'S why I'm optimistic. We don't need 30 of these guys to be key contributors, just a handful. And there's every reason to believe we have that in the system.
  10. Forget the bump to Nashville. Just wait for Greinke to be traded, and put him in the Brewers rotation. Why not?
  11. I see it differently. Hang onto him and the demand is reduced as the main suitors for SP sign others. Wait until the deadline and Melvin has almost no leverage. Every GM in baseball knows that he has no incentive to hang onto Greinke, as we're not a playoff team and Greinke hasn't accepted our offers to re-sign. You don't need to take the first offer that comes your way, but I wouldn't pass up a really good one. Teams have other options than Greinke right now. I see your point, but remember the pressure will be on contenders at the deadline to do something. So while they may know Melvin "has to" trade Greinke, they have pressure to add a stud to their rotation. With Hamels and Dempster off the screen, Greinke is the clear and obvious choice for teams looking for a starter- and there's more than one. We haven't even heard about teams like the Orioles, Nats, etc. who may be under the radar. With all that, yea you still have to pull the trigger at some point if you get a deal you really love. Then go to the other teams and let them know you're pulling the trigger in the next hour unless they sweeten the pot.
  12. I'll agree with that statement. Our minor league system has a lot of rebuilding to do. I don't agree. In fact, that's where I've turned my optimism- to the farm. For anyone paying attention, Fiers and Maldy have performed very well- better than anyone thought they would be, especially Fiers. Rogers and Burgos have pitched very well. In the case of Burgos, so well you can't ignore him anymore. Peralta and Thorny have been up and down, but there is hope there. As there is with some of the bulpen arms like Sanchez, Henderson, Kintzler, etc. Not to mention there's still reason to watch the starters down in Brevard and Appleton. Now that Khris Davis has decided he wants to play baseball after-all, he has been on fire. Morris is showing he may be for real. Other guys at each level in the minors that are capable of becoming legit prospects. Do we have a Braun or Fielder in the system? Probably not. But plenty of reason for optimism.
  13. If Delgado is the main piece from Atlanta, I'm not impressed. Wouldn't surprise me if Melvin puls the trigger, since he seems to be hell-bent on getting MLB ready pitching. Hoping he holds out and waits for the competition for Greinke to heat up. I rather get a higher celing guy than Delgado- at virtually any position other than catcher. I would rather roll the dice with a reasonable 1 yr contract with Marcum and then Rogers or Burgos right about now instead of Delgado. Cmon Doug. Get a higher celing SP, SS, or other position player.
  14. Who knows, mayne Greinke and/or his agent was waiting for Hamels to sign before making a decision on the Brewers offer. Seems like the money per season is about the same, Hamels just got an extra year. So add a team option for the 6th year, and that sure seems like market value. Plus he would avoid the risk of injury the last couple months of the season. After saying that, I still think he doesn't sign with the Brewers, and he gets traded.
  15. Who cares? This season is trashed anyways. No need to lower ZG's trade value by letting him implode in the 8th. Time to start rebuilding. I always love this argument. Yes, who cares about wins. We can't make the playoffs - or it's unlikely - so lets just completely give up. Sounds like something someone who never played competitive sports said. You need to get expressed written consent to use that statement. I'm pretty sure thats the official motto of the 2012 Brewers bullpen.
  16. Rivera's name needs to be mentioned. Very slick fielding SS, and already has pop. Now all he needs is plate discipline.
  17. I've seen the list before. Important to keep in mind FA isn't the only way to add a SP. They can swing a trade in the off-season, and have plenty of chips to play if they find the right trading partner. ARam, Hart, and Weeks just to name a few. We have Gallardo and Fiers penciled in. Even Estrada really, would have no problem with him in the rotation at this point. Then you can sign a Marcum (or equivalent) or trade for a SP. Either way, that leaves one or two posts for Thornburg, Peralta, Burgos, Rogers, etc. I imagine once Greinke gets traded, they can take a longer look at one of these guys. Come September, you can shut down Wolf and get a few starts from another one of these guys. That should help get a feel for who can be added to the rotation or not. Honestly, even if Greinke was signed this team's future success is tied to how many of their pitching prospects can be solid members of the rotation and bullpen. And one step further, they need a couple of them to be studs.
  18. Maddux is always the name people bring up whenever you're talking about a successful RHP with an avg fastball. I don't think anyone said Fiers will be the next Maddux, the poster was just using him as an example that you can be successful in this league without a 95 MPH fastball. (People here used to use Moyer as the example, don't see that comparison anymore.)
  19. I fear some teams are freaked out about Greinke, and his value may have gone way down. He hasn't pitched well his last couple outings, mysteriously sits out, etc. Add a sub-par playoff performance last year. Not saying everyone is scared off, but if even a couple contenders are scared off, it could really hurt Melvin's ability to play this with a strong hand.
  20. Nobody is saying you'll get Verlander or Votto in return. K-Rod and Axford have value, even guys like Loe, Parra, and Veras have value. Whther I agree with it or not, it's kind of Standard Operating Procedure for many contenders. Go get a veteran bullpen arm for the stretch run. The belief is, move a guy to a team who's in the hunt and they'll perform better. History shows that can work sometimes. At this point it's all about 2013, and I want to clear out the trash and give innings to guys like Kintzler, Stetter, Sanchez, Henderson, Wooten, Burgos.
  21. I have no dog in this fight. In fact, Weeks has been one of my favorite players. Plays hard, keeps his moth shut, and just plays ball. With that said, none of knows if he will bounce back to his pre-2012 form. I really hope he does, but time will tell. I don't want to trade him for nothing, just for slary relief. I have more faith in him than that. But if he's part of a mega-deal in the off-season that makes the team better, I'm fine with that.
  22. Is there a 10+ run line? That may explain the missing 2 games?
  23. Same goes for Veras. If anyone wants him, have at it. I would ahve no problem trading Axford either, for that matter. Would need to get value back for him though.
  24. Yea, I don't get it. No guarantee he'll even be ready by Spring Training, and if he is it will take a while to build his innings back up. All while avoiding re-injury, not losing any velocity (which he can't afford to lose.) I'm fine with Narvy, and if he can eventually make it back that would be nice. But it no way should he be discussed as part of the rotation for next year.
