  1. You can trade ARam or Hart and you're down to $85MM or so. And that's on the high end, because I don't think arby pushes the payroll up $10MM. That's true, but can you see Melvin signing Greinke and then trading A-Ram or Hart? Seems unlikely to me. And there are lots of arbitration-eligible players next year: Morgan (ARB2), Loe (ARB3), Veras (ARB3), Gomez (ARB4), Parra (ARB3), Ransom (ARB2), Kottaras (ARB2), Axford (ARB1), Narveson (ARB1), Estrada (ARB1) Most of those players will be making a few million via arbitration. I was actually conservative by assuming Loe & others will be non-tendered. Normally, no, I couldn't see Melvin trading ARam or Hart. But if Greinke agrees to the deal, he may be forced to trade one and roll the dice with Gamel or Green. Or even Hunter Morris. (Now THAT would be unlike Melvin.) Also, I don't think Loe will be the only one non-tendered. Morgan and Ransom for sure. Probably Kottaras. Veras.......maybe. Bottom line, they do have ways to shed salary and/or avoid adding salary.

  3. That could also explain why he's skipping a start. One or both sides may want to give him time to think about it exclusively. Hard to concentrate on a huge decision in your life, and propoerly prepare to pitch at the same time. And I would think Greinke even more than others. It sure SOUNDS like Melvin is throwing his best offer out there with a deadline. If Greinke doesn't accept he'll be traded for the best deal Melvin can get. I really expect one or the other, I don't see him being here past the trade deadline without an extension signed.
  4. Not a big Udoh fan. Not sure why all the hate for Gooden. He is an offensive threat, great passer, and can pull down rebounds. He isn't a great defender, but not as bad as people here claim. How many C/F get a triple double?? I think one of Luc Richard, Udoh, Sanders has to either ride the oines or be traded.
  5. You may be right. But I think he may actually start. Skiles likes Dunleavy off the bench, which I can understand. Luc Richard is in the mix, but other than that no other options at the 3. With Skiles it wouldn't surprise me if he's buried on the bench, but I have a feeling he'll play a bigger role this year.
  6. I'm in a very small minority. Even if they win only 1 of 3 they're still in it. Remember, we're not chasing the Reds. What if they follow that with a sweep of Phily? They can just keep hanging around and wait for that 10 out of 12 winning streak and they're right there. Don't get me wrong, they are still a long shot. I'm just not sure they'll get a great deal for Greinke anyhow, so it may be worth keeping him and trying to re-sign him. At least right now. I think you have to let this play out until the deadline and then see where you are. With Lucroy coming back, and hopefully Marcum, they do have a legit shot to make a run. Sometimes we forget how long the season is. 5 1/2 games back in July is not horrible, even though they do have to pass several teams. But you keep winning most series and get to .500, then wait and hope for that winning streak. Finally, I don't even mind them buying. But it would have to be a bullpen guy or SS that is under contract for longer than this season, and I wouldn't give up a top prospect. Throw Loe or Veras and Maysonnet or Prince, something like that for a more reliable bullpen arm. I would be all for a trade like that. Look at trading guys currently on the roster you can live without, and/or prospects who are middle of the road. Now if they tank, you can always go into a full sell mode at the deadline.
  7. I have DVRd all the Bucks summer league games, just can't stomach watching every minute. I feel better about both Henson and Lamb. Henson already has more to his offensive game than I expected, and Lamb shows some ability to get to the basket, not just a jump shooter. I'm most excited about Tobias Harris. Yes, he's playing against horrible competition, I get that. But he looks like hs floor is a solid contributor, and his ceiling is higher than I thought. Sanders "is what he is" and nobody else on the roster really looks like a keeper. Finally, this just in, Brian Butch does not belong in the NBA. Hate to say it, but it's true.
  8. "Easily the main reason" is how I would describe it. I think 5 games vs a "good" bullpen is a conservative estimate. That 10 game swing makes them a contender. There are no metrics that will satisfy everyone here, obviously there's far more to it that blown saves.
  9. 45 minute half-inning coming up. **Spoiler alert* You won't like the ending.
  10. Brewers are saying it's a strained right abductor muscle. I'm not sure I have one of those.
  11. I liked it better when I knew Parra sucked. Quit confusing me Manny.
  12. 1) Build a AAA bullpen 2) Bunt 9 times a game 3) Encourage players to get thrown out on the basepaths as much as possible. 4) Tell everyone we're "all in" again.
  13. Saito and Hawkins were studs in the 2nd half of the season last year. Saito hasn't even pitched this season so that woulda been a terrible sign but Hawkins would have been nice to have again. Woulda solved having Veras as a 7th inning man. I have no problem not signing Saito and Hawkins. The problem is they were never replaced with similar talent. Let this be a cautionary tale. Don't neglect the bullpen. This team would be in contention this year with a solid bullpen. And you don't need to spend a ton of money, just be able to identify talent. How many teams have the Brewers faced this year with several guys coming out of the pen throwing nasty stuff with great numbers? And they're all young guys making close to nothing. As for Axford? Who cares? It's too late now. RR used the MLB Managers handbook and gave Ax 4 months to "work it out." It's not like Axford is Rivera or Gagne in their prime. What special right does he have to hold on to that role indefinitely? KRod should have had that job long ago. Maybe he wouldn't have done much better, but then you go to plan C. But since "old Axy" is named as the closer, he shall be the closer forever. So says RR's MLB Managers Guide.
  14. Time to sell. Sorry Fiers, only way to get a W with this pen is to go the distance.
  15. Yea, if he's going to be on tv a couple hundred times a year, he may want to look into a dentist appt.
  16. Izzy starting makes sense based on the match-up. 6 for 10 hard to argue with. I dont mind Ishy getting a start either, Mormez just hasnt been productive.
  17. And the guys left know they'll still have to pitch tonight
