  1. This game is falling right into Melvin's magical plan. 6 run shot by Gomez in the 9th.
  2. It's early in the season, but I'm just about done with this episode of "The Replacements" Get Davis and Suppan out of there, put Narvy and Parra in the rotation. Bring up Axford and Braddock for the bully. Bring up Lucroy or Salome. Bring up Lo Cain and sit Gomez. Bring up Katin and Heether, ship out Gerut and Inglett. Money and politically correctness aside, do you really believe the roster would be worse if all these moves were made? Panic time? Maybe...but I would argue most of these moves should have been done to start the season anyhow. Notice none of this is in blue.
  3. I would bring up Katin, and send Inglett down. What does he really give you? He's redundant to Counsell. It would take a pretty bizarre situation for your 2nd utility IF to play in the field. I rather have a RH power bat to PH.
  4. It is cold up here today, and some wind. Not making excuses for Arnett, but maybe his velocity (or lack thereof) is weather-related.
  5. I will be disappointed if they let Suppan suck for more than 4-5 starts before relegated to garbage time. On that, we agree. I will be the first one shouting if he gets more than 3 suckish starts.
  6. I have to believe it was a promise for playing time. I can imagine Edmunds saying he wants to be more than a PH with an occasional start, or he'll retire or try to work out a deal with someone else. No matter the reason, Edmunds just shouldn't be playing this much.
  7. I realize it's sacriligious to say such a thing, but the Willie Mays play wasn't that spectacular at all. A huge play given the situation, of course. But the play itself is no different than plays made every day in today's MLB. Not having watched games back then, maybe it was a spectacular play for that era. Heck, that catch the Cards' CF made last night on Hart's shot to CF was every bit as difficult , if not more, than May's catch.
  8. He can bunt. That's the only reason he's #2. That, and I don't think Macha wanted to put the pressure on Escobar. But Alcides seems to be a tough minded kid, I don't think it would put too much pressure on him. Gomez is a guy Melvin loves for some reason, same man-crush he has on Gerut.
  9. I'm just thrilled there is more pitching in the system from top to bottom than there has been in many, many years. I'm not that concerned about the bats, because quite frankly there's no place to put them anyhow. You have young players locked in at every position except Catcher. And they have two bats in the system nearly ready there. Prince leaves? You still have Gamel. Heck, it's going to be hard finding a spot for Lawrie in the next couple years.
  10. I'm not so sure. I think Stavinoha was looking for a change-up down and in, and he got it. In fact, that seems to be a common theme. Maybe the Cards really figured out Hoffman's sequence? Could he be tipping pitches? Not sure, all I know is the Cards seemed to always know what was coming...or guessed right an awful lot.
  11. Right, I get that. That's the discussion they could have had if Morgan made his point more clearly. I'm not saying his point was valid, I'm saying he wasn't able to make his point at all.
  12. Actually, I understood his point- even though he did a horrific job of explaining it. His point was that even a small market team can sign a big contract. And used Mauer as an example. If he could have made it that clear from the beginning, maybe they could have had a reasonable discussion about it.
  13. I disagree. Any hitter in the majors will hit am 85 MPH down the middle of the plate. Hard. Not just Pujols and Holliday.
  14. I think the question should be rephrased. "Should Gomez or Escobar be in the #2 hole?"
  15. This is the type of risk a team like the Brewers need to take. Sky is the limit for Weeks, we all know that. Yet, there's an injury risk. But this isn't like paying a ton to a SP with a bad shoulder. Even if Weeks has injuries, it's not like you'll get nothing out of him during a 5 year contract. So I think the upside is huge, downside is limited. You guys know better than I do on the dollars involved, but with two arby years left, I would think a contract extension would be very reasonable.
  16. Don't worry, I'm sure they're coming.
  17. Honestly, I didn't see any comments in this thread that could be labeld "overreacting." I do think many people are concerned, and I don't think that's unreasonable. I was concerned about Hoffman before the season even started, fearing the Brewers went to the well once too often. Let's remember he gave up a run vs the Rockies as well, even though he got the save. But that's 4 outings, giving up runs in 3 of them. At his age, I don't think it's unreasonable to have real concerns. With his stuff, he has to really be on every time he takes the mound. It's not like a guy who throws 95-96 with movement. Then you can make a mistake and get away with it. It doesn't really matter if Hoffman has lost a tick on his fastball. The problem has been location. Both HR yesterday were fastballs down the middle. Hoffman absolutely needs to locate his fastball or he's in big trouble.
  18. If you enjoyed that one, I highly suggest "Ice Spiders." SyFy is gold for this genre, and so far I haven't seen one that can top Ice Spiders! Find it. Get it. Now. You'll thank me later ; )
  19. I don't believe that. If he has 5 starts and gets shelled a couple times, they can still win most (maybe all) of those games. Ask Looper. I don't believe in the theory that a loss in April has the same weight as a loss in September. You have all season to make up for it, and in a pennant race you know exaclty where you stand, what you need to do to get over the top, etc. Lots and lots of ways to blow a game or two early. The big picture always factors in. Otherwise reserves would never start, and you would use your top 3 guys in the bully until their arms fell off. I just don't believe a small market team can dump $12MM without at least trying to get something out of it.
  20. Some of you are making very valid points. However, it seems like you're opinions are based on Parra not starting at all this year and Suppan staying in the #5 spot all year. Well, I'm here to tell you neither one of those things are going to happen. It's simply a mtter of show-casing Suppan to see if there's a team out there that will eat a portion of Suppan's salary. That doesn't jeopardize the entire season, or hold back Parra's development. 3TO. 1) Suppan can pitch like the suckiest suck whoever sucked, and he'll get dumped. Failed experiment, and you move on. 2) He pitches reasonably well, and Melvin can work out a deal. 3) He pitches reasonably well, a deal can't be worked out, and he's cut or sent to the bully. I just refuse to believe that Parra won't get 25 + starts this year.
  21. Well, Soup has gone 4.62/4.96/5.29 the past 3 years. You can look at that two ways. Trend would suggest a 5.50 ERA. But looking at it another way, he could return to a 4.80 ish ERA. Parra has been worse than that, of course. Yes, Parra has potential, but I don't think he's entitled to 30 starts this year.
  22. Ok, with that logic shouldn't it take a lot of bad pitching to set Suppan down? Now, I don't think it SHOULD take that to cut him. If he has too long a leash, I will be right with you guys. For example, if he is horrible his first two starts back, I would cut him loose. Two strikes and he's out.
  23. What of Manny Parra now? If Suppan does just enough to keep a job all year and the other guys stay healthy, doesn't what little value Parra had coming off such a poor year in 09 reallly erode to virtually nothing anyway? It seems Macha trusts Narveson enough to use him on a fairly consistent basis, so that's less of a worry but this role for Parra might just derail a career. Maybe the solution is to trade Parra if there's someone out there interested. But what are the chances the entire rotation stays healthy? It's also possible Davis or Bush get removed from the rotation based on performance in favor of Bush. Any way you slice it, I think the odds are pretty strong that one way or another Parra will be in the rotation- and probably sooner rather than later.
