  1. By all accounts, SD is in fire-sale mode. A bad team doesn't need an aging, high priced closer. Is he better than his numbers indicate? Maybe a change of scenery, pitching for a team in games that matter? I don't know what his contract looks like, but maybe you can get him for very littel, even have SD pay for part of his salary. If it works, the 8th inning WHOAA SOLVD with Torres, and Hoffman closes.
  2. My bad, then I could see Villy going down and putting in a few starts. Bring him back as your 5th starter for the stretch run. Also a good contingency plan if any of the Big 3 gets injured.
  3. A bit OT, but I have to say it. I think part of Weeks' problem is his bat- literally. I don't think he's using a heavy enough bat for his quick swing, and that huge knob takes even more weight and mass off the barrel. I would like to see what he does using Braun's bats for a week. I'm dead serious. His swing is so quick, he really doesn't need such a small, light bat. In fact, it may even be a hindrance. Ok, I got that off my chest. I agree Weeks isn't best suited for lead-ff, but there's no way Ned is going to tinker with a line-up that is working otherwise. Hart will stay in the 5 hole, I don't see why you would change that now. Cameron is the only other legit option, and it's really not much of an option becuase you get essentially the same hitter. I'm praying the Brewers make a move for a lead-off hitter. OPS be damned, I want a guy with even slightly above avg lead-off OBP. Roberts would be ideal, and I would thrilled with move, since it helps us in 2009 as well. Weeks for Roberts, even sprinkle in a lower level prospect to sweeten the deal for that type of player. That would be my #1 goal, 2B for 2B. The team that acquires Weeks would be better suited to him somewhere else in the line-up- a luxury the Brewers don't have at this point. But the other option would be to get a CF for the lead-off spot. Ideally someone who is signed through at least 2009. He could bat lead-off and move Weeks down to 7 or 8. Cameron is your 4th OF, and a heck of a PH with his power, and late inning replacenet with his defense. As long as we're going for it, let's get that deal done.
  4. Suppan may miss a start or two to get himself right, maybe just shut down until after the break. If that doesn't happen, it may make sense to send McClung down to AAA where he can continue to start, and be ready to serve in that role for the Brewers when called on. I don't think Stetter gets sent down, as long as he's "right" they need that 2nd lefty in the pen. Option 3 would be send McClung to the pen, and send Villy down to AAA to stretch him out to be a starter later in the year. (The same thing they did with him last year.)
  5. Those guys are all real close, all depends what happens in the next few weeks. Plenty of time for Braun to go on another tear. If he gets up to 22-25 HR, hitting over .300, and top 3 or so in RBI he will be chosen. All numbers that are entirely possible.
  6. Gamel is left handed. My bad...I knew that! You know, I would love to sign Hart (and Fielder for that matter) long term. But in my opinion, the priority should be Sheets, Gallardo, Parra, and Villy. We know what it costs to get front of the rotation pitchers in FA, and the Brewers just can't compete for those guys. Without them, doesn't really matter if Hart is here or not.
  7. White Sox are in first place, last time I checked their clubhouse isn't exactly a Sunday picnic.
  8. What do you do about a long term line-up that is 100% RH? If Fielder leaves as many believe, you are left with Braun, Hart, LaPorta, Gamel, Weeks, Hardy, etc. Salome too, right? Even if you end up replacing Weeks or Hardy, you still have the middle, run producing, portion of the line-up entirely RH. I don't have the answer, but I think that's a big issue that nobody is reallt talking about.
  9. I would want to know if he made this comment after a win or loss. Frankly, I want bad vibes in the clubhouse after a loss.
  10. 6-3 for the homestand, and they're 17-7 at the end of that stretch- which would be exactly what I said they needed to do. Of course, we'll probably be 10 games behind the Cubs.
  11. Yost's stat ff the year: Number of non-battlers on the roster- 0/25, or as a percentage 0.000
  12. Don't forget Riske for a reasonable price and Tavarez for almost nothing. Sure, Riske's hurt at the moment but you can't predict that. When healthy again, over time he will be a guy that can be counted on for an inning 4-5 games a week.
  13. I agree, and would only add it's not his fault Ned put him in the #2 slot. His numbers look better when he's down at #7 in the line-up where he should be. But to be fair to Ned, they already have Hardy and Kendall that belong at the bottom of the line-up.
  14. Nothing new, but the pen sure could use another southpaw other than Shouse. How has Stetter been doing since he got sent down?
  15. I believe people within the Brewers offices read Brewerfan.net. I can't imagine Melvin getting up first thing every morning and pouring over the posts, but I'm sure some staff people read it, and report back what fans are talking about. Same goes for Mark A. This site has more credibility than the average Yahoo or ESPN message board. Whether they agree with everything said here doesn't really matter, what DOES matter is you have a large group of high baseball IQ people here, and they can't (or shouldn't) easily dismiss the conversations that take place here.
  16. And he will never admit he may have been wrong. Same game, he fails to make a defensive repalcement, that to me is common sense. Get Cameron out here for the late innings with a lead, a no brainer. What is Yost's answer? "Gabe is a good defensive player." No kidding, that's not an answer. Isn't Cameron a superior a defensive player Ned? Did the same thing playing Dillon at 2B yesterday, even an easier call to make- put CC in there in the late innings...is that so difficult? Makes me wonder what Ted Simmons does. Do you think he A) Tries to convince Ned to do what makes sense. B) Mentions things, but doesn't really push it or C) Miss these moves as easily as Ned does? I'm genuinly curious. As far as the Villy/Mota decision goes, it's just Ned being stubborn. First game o nthe roadie, Protecting your ace's lead...that is not the time to stick to your guns. Nuance is lost on Ned. That's a game you try to win, and Villy was nasty that game. It's not like any of these guys are ten year All Stars that deserve special consideration. Where is it written that Mota pitches the 8th every game?
  17. I love Cirillo, but he's as cliche as they come. Small sample size though. As far as the HR/Wins charts, I'm not sure it tells us anything. Chances are, if you're able to hit 2-3 HRs or more, chances are you're hitting pretty well in general that game and scoring runs.
  18. Sure, it's circular. Player has right to complain publicly. Fans have a right to boo. Media has a right to ask said player about the reaction....and it starts all over again.
  19. I've been thinking about it, but now I don't think it's too soon to bring it up after this homestand. At what point do you sacrifice better defense in CF for a better bat (or hotter bat at least ?) I would ride Kapler in Colorado and see what happens. Especially with Weeks struggling, you just have to have guys on base for Braun and Fielder. That makes the whole offense go. Hall, Cameron you have been Yosted. Weeks listen to the bell...it tolls for thee.
  20. My point is I don't think the chance is that outlandish. The only way I'll be convinced otherwise is proof. I would imagine just about every year one or two divisions are won by teams that were 7 games out (or more) in June or later. But that's from memory, admitedly.
  21. I think both Kendall and Cameron's playing time will be determined by how the offense is producing in general. Take this homestand as an example. Cameron and Kendall haven't been hitting, but they're 7-1. So you want Kendall and Cameron in there for their defense, and their lack of hitting isn't costing them any wins. Now if the offense struggles, and those guys are part of the reason there are options, and Rivera and Kapler will get more starts. I really believe that's how Ned sees it.
  22. I'm too old to boo, just seems silly the older you get as you guys will find out. With that said, the only way fans can voice their displeasure is to boo. Mail gets screened, and they'll never read the critical letters. You can boycott going to games, but that affects the whole team- not the individual player in question. I cringed when i heard the boos last night. But the more I thought about it, I'm ok with it- in fact I want more of it. I don't like booing based on performance. As long as a player is giving his best, I don't know what more you can ask. A guy like Turnbow for example. Yes, he lost his control and deserved to get sent down. But why boo him? On the other hand, I have no problem booing whenever players speak publicly about wanting to be traded, not happy with their contract, etc. Players can be paid their millions, and that's fine with me. But when you're under contract, live with it. Not happy you're not playing every day? Fine, say that. In the right tone, I don't think anyone has a problem with that. But don't get your agent and the media involved publicly. This crap started in the NFL and NBA, now it's leeking into MLB. End it before it gets started!
  23. 7 games out with 100 to play, how in the world is the race over? We can try to overanalyze it with stats that usually don't take into account all variables, but the only stat that matters is that teams have won a division down by 7 games before. In fact, I wouldn't say it's common but I'm sure it's happened plenty of times in the modern era.
  24. What did generations do before manufacturing jobs existed? This is a natural evolution, and I don't think it's a sad reality. There are a ton of jobs out there that pay enough to support a family with minimal education (construction, trade contractors, truck driver, etc.) Not to mention the ever expanding medical and technology fields. Job opportunities are not dwindling, they are just different. A bit OT, but our public eduction system not only has done a horrific job of teaching basic knowledge and skills, it has also failed misearbly in showing students what jobs are available and teaching skills needed to perform those jobs.
  25. I bought a piece of crap used Volkswagon Jetta once, just because the sales chick was hot...
