  1. Sums it up for me. I would only add if we got a "solid" lefty in the pen I would feel a little better.
  2. I don't get it. If he was a lefty I would feel a little better. But to give up Inman and two other "prospects" for a solid but not spectacular bullpen arm??? I really thought we were ok there with Wise and Villy, not to mention Yo if he returns to the pen at some point. The only thing I can cling to is that Melvin has proven he's not stupid. Maybe he knows something about Inman we don't?
  3. Let it play out. First, we don't know how long Sheets will be out. Secondly, a trade could still be made involving Vargas. Suppan could get on a roll. Lots of things could happen over the next month. I have pointed out before (and I see it posted above again) something that's very important. The Brewers have 6 off days in Aug and Sept. That's potentially 6 starts Yo could skip. That would save 40+ innings and keep him fresh for October.
  4. Ok is the right word. To really make a splash in September and October, what three SP would you hang your hat on? Sheets- Yes, if he can return to form by then. Not a given. Yo- Probably yes, I would go with him. Suppan- Playoff experience, but otherwise doesn't give you much confidence Cappy- Pitched very well his last couple starts, but I would need to see far more of it before I feel good. Bush,Vargas- Well, at least Vargas starting would guarantee the Brewers would get their bats out. Personally, I would get a #2 starter if you don't have to give up too much. If it's just another middle of the rotation guy, we're good there.
  5. I would bet it's the Yankees or Red Sox. Stereotypes usually have some truth, and there's nobody with a more "East Coast Elitist" attitude than the upper management of those teams.
  6. Worth a try...someone tried to pull a Melvin on Melvin.
  7. Would Melvin? No. And that's basically what I said above. Even though that trade may be "fair" Melvin won't do it, because it's giving up too much. Would I do it? Yes. Mench and Gwynn don't figure to be starters in the future anyhow. Turnbow has some value to this team, but with Wise, Villy, Parra, etc. he is not untouchable by any means. If I give up players that don't figure to be starters- either position players or pitchers, I would deal for a big stick or top of the rotation starter down the stretch. Why? As bright as the future looks they may never have an opportunity like this again. Injuries, players not living up to potential, greater competition from a team (or more) emerging as a powerhouse...all these things could happen. This year, right now, the Brewers are in position to play in the World Series. After 25 years. There comes a point when I believe in"going for it." That doesn't mean trading guys like Yo, Villy, Braun, Fielder, etc. But guys like Mench and Turnbow can be replace relatively easily.
  8. I agree with rwa12. How old are your kids? If you go with the in-laws, chances are they'll be just excited a year or two later. We've been there 16 times and still experience something new every time. For example, in laws can take them to WDW, but your parents can arrange a breakfast with your kids' favorite character. They can take them to WDW, but your parents can get them a seat in the front of the monorail with the conductor. 100s of ways for your parents to experience "brand new" excitement from your kids. Check out disboards.com You can plan a trip where they tell your parents "you really know a lot about Disney World." Sweet revenge.
  9. Too long to condense into one name, but I'll try. "Know it all, but a year too late guy" You know him. The guy who must tell you how great a movie is 10 months after it's been out. He'll go on at length about how cool an Ipod is. Just last week I got a "check this out" and he played some stupid ring tone on his cell phone. "You can add any song you want" he added. I lost it. I explained that custom rign tones have been around for 10 years now, and now mine just rings.
  10. Ok, I understand. So it really comes down to value, which is the way Melvin evaluates any potential deal- pennant race or not. But I still don't believe the Brewers would do what it takes to get a real stud starting pitcher or big bat. Look at what the Rangers did last year. They got Carlos Lee for 3 players they felt were role players, really only two because one was compensation for Cruz. I could see the Brewers making a move like that. A big stick in LF for Mench and Spurling as an example. Even a bit more than that. What I don't see them doing is trying to land a guy like Cabrera for Parra, Vargas and Villy. Basically, even though that may be a "fair" trade for a player like Cabrera the Brewers won't bite on something like that.
  11. Not to be difficult, but those two goals are mutually exlcusive. If you're willing to do whatever it takes, that may mean trading away part of the future. And if you continue to draft and develop players well, that shouldn't even affect the future all that much anyhow. Example. I would be shocked if the Brewers could land Griffey for the stretch run. But if they really were willing to "do whatever it takes" that would mean giving Cincy (a division rival by the way) something more than Balfour and a bag of seeds.
  12. I don't believe the third slot has A LOT more 2 out/no runner situations than the 5th spot. But even if that was true, wouldn't you want Braun 3rd instead of 5th? Braun is more likely to get on base with those 2 outs with the team's biggest run producer up next to drive him in. After all, isn't that a big part of line-up strategy? Get as many people on base throughout the game with your clean-up hitter up?
  13. In theory that makes sense. However, I would imagine the difference in hitting with nobody on and two outs is almost (if not) statistically insignificant from 1-9 in the line-up. So you balance that vs a number that IS significant- number of ABs per game, nad you're far better off having one of your best hitters in the 3rd spot vs 6th or 7th.
  14. I don't think an OF acquired via FA or trade would necessarily be only a one year stop-gap. LaPorta is an unknown, and in my opinion Hall hasn't proven he can (or should) be a full tme starter in the OF LONG TERM. It wasn't very long ago that the Brewers were over-stocked in the OF from AA up. Look at how things transpired. If we took a poll, I bet Hart was near the bottom of the list in who we thought would be an every day starter in 2007. Frankly, I wouldn't even wait until next year. They need a bat today. And I think acquiring an OF is manageable salary wise.
  15. Frankly, when you say the future I'm thinking next week. Why wait until next season? This is a pennant race and Jenkins has offered almost nothing at the plate for months now. When Hall comes back, I would try a platoon of Gwench in LF. Ideally, Melvin trades for a LF bat sometime real soon.
  16. Easy to Monday morning QB, and you can believe me or not, but while i was watching that inning develop I said at the time Yost should PH for Estrada with either Weeks or Gwynn. "The Book" doesn't call for that, but in that situation it just seemed like the right move at the time.
  17. I think Braun CAN hit clean-up, but why change the only thing that's working in this line-up? I do think it's time to move Hardy down in the line-up and try Weeks/Hart at the top- in either order. Without looking, I can't imagine Weeks' OPS is any worse that Hardy in July.
  18. Balfour shouldn't have even been the issue, it shouldn't have even got to that point. 6th inning. st and 2nd nobody out, Graffy at the plate, tied 2-2. You don't sacrafice?!?!?! Get the runners to 2nd and 3rd and get at least one run in. You do that, and the rest of the game may play out very differently. It's such a no-brainer to me that I can't justify any other option. If it's a slug fest I can see swinging away. But it was a 2-2 game where every run was valuable. This shouldn't surprise me because Yost rarely bunts in these situations. But I've already counted four games that MAY have been won by bunting and getting a run across.
  19. I understand, but coming back from arm surgery...maybe he's on a lower pitch limit?
  20. Since I started the topic, let me ask everyone to look at this in a slightly different way. Look at each player and ideally where SHOULD they bat in the line-up, all things being equal? Perhaps looking to next year. Hart- #3 Hall- #6 (could be a #5 hitter) Estrada- #6-7 Fielder- #4 Weeks- Honestly, who knows. Hardy- #7 Yes he had an ultra hot stretch, but not sold he's a #2 hitter Braun- #5 Gwynn- #8, possibly #1 What I found going through this exercise is that the Brewers need a lead-ff guy next year if it's not Gwynn, The rest of the line-up takes care of itself. Replace Menchkins with a lead-off guy in CF or LF and you get: Player X Hardy Hart Fielder Braun Hall Estrada Weeks/Graffy Maybe it's just me, but I see more potential from that line-up than Hart leading off and Braun hitting 3rd. Plus it gives Fielder more protection.
  21. I agree with giving Parra at least two starts. Does anyone know if HE is on a pitch limit this year, and if so how close he is to reaching it? Plan B is Gallardo. If Parra starts 2-3 times that saves Gallardo some innings. Plus, there are five days off between now and the end of August. It would be possible to juggle the rotation to limit Gallardo's starts. I wouldn't want to use Villy as a starter this year, why mess with what's working in the pen. He will be a starter or the closer next year, but too valuable in his role this year. I really feel comfortable with that solution for Sheets. The problem is Cappy. What if he has two more god-awful starts? Would you not agree at some point he needs to be taken out of the rotation- at lest temporarily? Best case scenerio, Parra pitches very well. Now when Sheets comes back you have 7 legit starters to choose from for the stretch run. 8 if you want to include Villy.
  22. I don't think these people are "fake" fans. They are just misinformed fans. Some of this comes from talk radio, where many of the hosts are almost as clueless as the general Brewers fan. That's why so many fans to this day think Yost is insane for not starting TGJ as the lead -off man every day. But you can cut it however you like. The bottom line is there wouldn't ne MLB in Milwaukee without a ton of casual fans. Ever been to a Monday night game in the middle of April? Every game would be like that without casual fans.
  23. It's very simple really. BBT like all ESPN programming is about entertainment, not information. Years ago, information WAS the entertainment. A 24 hour a day sports news channel- what a concept!! We couldn't wait for SC each day to get scores and highlights. Now with all the competition ou there, ESPN feels information isn't good enough. In fact information isn't anywhere near a priority. They want talking heads that the masses find to be entertaining.
  24. I disagree with your disagreement. Baseball season often intersects with soccer season. Coaches tend to be very inflexible about missing practices in one sport to attend the other. So very early on many kids have to make a choice. Secondly, I have no proof but I feel strongly that the video games age (and perhaps parental coddling) have steered kids away from baseball. In a video game they have total control of the action. They can manipulate the game to win. Baseball is difficult. They will strike out, they will drop a pop-up. It's possible to really struggle or frankly be a "bad" player. In soccer, it's difficult to make a "bad" play. You're always involved. Same with basketball. You can contribute almost regardless of skill level. In baseball you may not have a ball hit to you the entire game. You may only get 2 at bats. That's why less kids are playing baseball in my opinion. With that said, youth baseball (and HS baseball) are alive and well in the Fox Valley. The numbers in Little League are growing in fact. I think the difference is that tthere's a relatively small core group of kids who love baseball and nobody else plays at all- in lower leagues or "just for fun."
  25. I really don't see how this is any different than the masses of people who become "fans" of any team that becomes popular. The same thing happened with the Packers in the mid 90s. Ditto for the Indians back when they turned it around. Yes, it can get frustrating. Just let them buy tickets and merchandise and don't look back.
