  1. You put me in the uncomfortable position of apologizing for saying something negative about Bonds. But alas, I did watch the interview again on my DVR. I now understand he wasn't alluding to using "dead" balls when he's hitting. I was mentally tuning in and out of the HR derby, and I heard him wrong. I think it was subconscious because it sounds like something Barry would say.
  2. It's always amusing to me that as liberal (small l) we are in the U.S., we 're still quite uptight about sexuality. This young woman is hot, and there's nothing perverse about that. It doesn't mean I want to leave my wife for her or stare at her picture for hours. She's sexy, why be in denial or act like it's wrong to admit it?
  3. Look no further than this forum, and you'll have my main reason for loving the game. I love football, basketball below the NBA level, golf, even NASCAR. But only baseball generates so much meaningful conversation. Think about it. You can talk about the Packers on Packers Chatters or some other site, and it's borderline ridiculous. We can watch a game and there's only so much that can be said. I love watching the games, but it ends there for the most part. With baseball you can discuss the line-up, rotation, who should be called up, should a player be platooned, trades, I could go on and on. Within an individual game you can debate when a pitcher should be taken out, should they have sacraficed, when to use a PH, is this a good time to steal, etc. The game jsut lends itself to a ton of well reasoned debate. The other thing that's special about baseball is the unique events you can see on any given day. Inside the park HR, walk off hit, triple play, hit for the cycle, no hitter. I love the way baseball clubhouses are self-policing and for the most part won't allow players to give a half-hearted effort or act like a jerk.
  4. It's impossible to say whther Suppan was the right choice after 1/2 year. He has 3 1/2 years left on his contract! The way salaries are spiraling upwards, Suppan may look like a steal 1-2 years from now. Plus, as mentioned earlier, we'll see what he gives this team in September and October.
  5. Miller seems to be hitting fine when he's in the 8 spot, not to mention others. Weeks could be hitting 2nd or 3rd and he would still see a bunch of breaking balls, with fastballs off the plate mixed in. I honestly believe his hands are so fast, he's out in front far too often. He needs to sit back another tick before he swings. He's just out in front chopping at pitches instead of sitting back and taking a smoot swing. I don't know how you fix that without fundamentally changing his entire swing. maybe something as simple as moving up in the box a bit?
  6. Without seeing him pitch, I would think a guy who throws 95 with movement is a candidate for the closer in 08. If Cordero is gone, who else would you suggest is the front runner? Certainly not Turnbow I hope. Balfour could be a top of the list Power 50 guy, a veteran ML pitcher, or a guy coming back from arm surgeries. What does it really matter? If his arm is sound now, and he is throwing 95 with late movement he is a closer candidate-period. As far as THIS year, be patient. Yes, Parra and probably Balfour will be called up but that may be now, or it may be in two weeks. Give it a little time to work itself out. Given Melvin and Yost's history, they will not hesitate to bring up players when they'r ready.
  7. Maybe I took it wrong, but it sounded like he was insinuating there was something wrong with the balls. Frankly, I thought he was basically saying they were using dead balls.
  8. Yes, Belling is an easy target. I don't think his "fixes' are that outrageous. I've heard more outlandish "fixes" than that from sports talk radio hosts who are supposed experts.
  9. I was confused until it dawned on me 10 minutes after the interview. What bothers me is why didn't Gammons have any follow-up questions? I respect him a ton, but I'm very disappointed he didn't follow-up with any questions after Bonds dropped a bomb shell like that on national TV.
  10. I know what you're saying, but I think it's possible to group all pitchers together while understanding their role with the team. Another variation would be how good a pitcher is vs his counterparts in the NL or MLB. For example, Bush vs other #4 starters. Shouse vs all other loogies. I'll use the former: 1. Sheets 2. Villanueva 3. Cordero 4. Gallardo 5. Capuano 6. Turnbow 7. Suppan 8. Bush 9. Wise 10. Vargas 11. Spurling 12. Shouse What I discovered going through this exercise is just how close 6-12 really are. Spurling just may be the best "last man in the pen" in the league. Now that Wise is #5 in the pen, he almost has to be the best in the league in that role. We'll see where Balfour stands before long.
  11. Kangaroo Court Grades: Fielder: A+ (for various belly flops) Hardy: A (see my signature) Braun: A- (for use of ultimate cliche usage "Just real comfortable out there right now Craig") Entire roster: B (for not catching a walk on ball 3)
  12. Offense: C- Defense: D+ Starters: D Bullpen: F+ Management: D- Overall: A+
  13. As much as I fight the urge, it's difficult at times to realize how long the season is. We're only half-way through the season. In mid-September we may be discussing how hot Weeks has been the 2nd half, and what in the world is wrong with Fielder and Braun?!?! Weeks has numbers that make a decent baseline if he has a huge month in July or August. It's not like he's starting from .220.
  14. I don't see what the big deal is, other than it an Apple. Sort of like the Ipod, great marketing but there are many other MP3 players that are just as good if not better. The Iphone ties you into AT&T, and I personally hate that network in WI. I get blazing fast internet on my Motorola Q, same tning with my Treo before that. Plus better integration with Outlook, better call quality, more phone features, etc. The Iphone is nice, but hardly revolutionary. I'll keep my Q, which I got for $99 and gives me more features and better service than Iphone/AT&T.
  15. So I stand by what I said a couple pages back. Yi has plenty of leverage. You need to realize how strong the Chinese govt is in these matters. If they want him to sit out and re-enter the draft next year, that's what he'll do. If they threaten to do that, then Harris can either call the bluff or trade him. However, I'm not sure it will come to that. I think they were shocked the Bucks didn't bow to their wishes. Now that it's done, they are PR savy enough to know Yi needs to enter the ;league on a positive note. I just don't know how much yet another 15 points/game scorer with no defense or toughness can help this team get deep in to the plaoyoffs anyhow.
  16. He has plenty of leverage. How much money do you think the Chinese government has? They can pay him whatever they want to "sit out" a year. I don't like it one bit when a draft pick in any sport pulls this crap, but the reality is he DOES have some leverage. It may not be the right move to start his career, but they can play that card if they want. If he does stay, I'm fine with the pick. The bottom line, he doesn't change the Bucks fundamental weakness- defense, toughness. The good news is the Bucks have cash to spend, trades can be made, and they have key pieces returning from injury. Harris should have this team in the playoffs this year unless he really messes up.
  17. Frazier for sure. Couldn't remember the actor's name, but that's who Braun looks like alright. Aaron rodgers isn't really that close IMHO.
  18. Oh, by the way, right about now Braun looks an awful lot like Babe Ruth.
  19. Case could be made for either. My personal choice for biggest snub is Granderson. Sosa could have made it too.
  20. Of course, when he came back he never apologized to his teamates. Other than that, he's a swell guy.
  21. 74 pitches in 2 innings! Burn that bullpen first game of the series Scrubs.
  22. Actually, the fans vote the last player in. And all that matters is which player's fans have a better grass roots effort to vote for him.
  23. ESPN is in the entertainment BUSINESS, no question about that. That doesn't mean they have this feature exclusively for ratings. If it was all about ratings, they would have Erin Andrews at the SC desk wearing little more than a smile. Countless other gimmicks they could create. Personally, I think it's a solid feature to show athletes can be more than money grubbing, law breaking, trash talking thugs. In fact, who knows...maybe other pro athletes watch these features and it makes a positive impact on them. Anyhow, I'm not naive enough to believe ESPN doesn't consider ratings in every decision they make. In the end, does the motive really matter? If I give to a charity just to make myself feel good, the charity still gets the money- so what's the difference? Finally, why have the feature at all? Just like any news broadcast, SC has moved away from true news long, long ago. (Which is why I rarely watch much of it anymore either.) If I want to know every detail about the Yankees, or hear the latest BS trade rumor I'll tune in to SC.
  24. I hate to use words like "never" or "always" but there's no way whatsoever Hart is an All-Star this year. He, along with Braun, will have to wait until next year.
