  1. It's fascinating to me in this age of advanced medicine and technology that developing and maintaining pitchers arms is still more voodoo than science. Some program becomes popular and everyone mimics it. Seems to be more junk science than proven results. I think the Brewers have adopted what most other teams are doing concerning pitch counts per appearance and per season. It's all the extra throwing during the week that is an unknown I guess.
  2. Don Money was on WAUK 1570 in ******on yesterday, and had some interesting comments. He was talking with Chris Bosio (now living in ******on) about the Brewers organization's approach to developing pitchers. Both Money and Bosio agreed that young pitchers throw too much and have no recovery time between appearances. Apparently they soft toss every day, plus all the weight training. Both guys went on to explain pitch counts were used back when they played, but they were higher. However, they believed it worked because they would get a couple days off after they pitched and ran a lot instead of throwing. Let me be clear, Money was not saying any of this in a disrespectful way. He was simply offering his opinion and wondering if the trainers and pitching coaches were using the best program to build young pitchers. Money is basically doing what the organization wants him to do, he's sticking with the program. You just have to wonder, with all the young pitchers having arm problems does Money have a point? And is anybody listening?
  3. That's the ballgame. Was this another Yost "lesson" ? You just have to make the best moves possible in games like that, especially when Sheets is the starter. Has anyone heard Yost's explanation about Ford vs Burba?
  4. Going to see WHOA and the boys tonight at Fox Cities Stadium. Tuesday is $1 beer night, I expect a pretty big crowd for a Tues in early May. This just in. Prince Fielder has a bit of pop in his bat.
  5. Liefer says "Lock THIS in the bathroom!!!"
  6. Good point. It would be the same reason and athlete signs long term- injury risk. He could go 17-10, but then agian he could also through out his back or shoulder. A check in hand is worth it to sme guys, others take their chances. But 5 yr/$25MM from the Brewers ppoint of view is a no-brainer. A $5MM a year player is pretty run of the mill. And he's what....25? 5 years isn't too long.
  7. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. If Yost had a couple of guys in the bully he could trust I'm sure he would have pulled Obey sooner. Looks like nothing but gas cans out there so far this year. Just to get off on a slight tangent, no excuse for even the lowest payroll team to have two real solid vets in the pen. Doesn't cost much, and you know you're going to need them.
  8. I'll be optimistic on Davis, why not? Sure he was terrible in his stint with the Rangers. MLB is filled with players (especially pitchers) who are late bloomers. He may have learned some lessons in Texas, worked on a few things, etc. Franklin and Kinney came out of nowhere (more or less) as well. Pods is a great example for a position player. If Seattle knew he would hit .315 with 40 SB they would have kept him. If nothing else, it's nice to know the Brewers are starting to assemble guys to compete for the #4 and #5 slots. It was only a couple months ago they really had nobody.
  9. It never hurts to hit in front of Jenkins and Sexson.
  10. Mark Smith plays a huge role in one W, then Conti does it with his arm and bat to win another...unbelieveable. What's Ginter's OBP for this game??
  11. "Pascual Coco, Derek Lee, and Doug Davis are all free to leave the Brewers organization should they choose this winter" Great....I'll drive the bus. Davis may be "serviceable" but who really cares if Coco or Lee leave? Opposing hitters maybe, that's about it.
  12. What a stark contrast in starting pitching between today and a 1-2 years from now. The Brewers have literally tried everyone at the #4 and #5 spots and have come up empty. A collection of guys who are clearly AAA pitchers and nothing more. I don't know how many #1 and #2s the system will produce in the near future, but I guarantee there will be plenty of guys who are better options at the #3-#5 slots.
  13. Brian, I don't think they need to pick up his option to keep in. Let him become a FA, then sign him for $2MM a year or so. I don't think anyone will be knocking down his door to sign him, and we know Rusch really respects the Brewers for how they treated him this year. With Martinez, at 24 he needs to be in the rotation next year. You have Jones, Hendrickson, Parra, etc. on the way up so 2004 is the perfect time for Martinez to get his opportunity. If he can be a #4 type SP, then you're on the right track with Sheets/Franklin/Martinez. 2005 add in Jones and maybe Hendrickson and that's potentially a very solid staff. In the meantime, you just hope someone can step up and at least be a mediocre #4 and #5 SP. This season with Q, Ford, Rusch (until recently), etc..... nobody has even been mediocre- they've all been horrible.
  14. Well, I'm not sure what the injuries have to do with it. By that logic Gold should have stayed at rookie ball. If you're pitching in Milwaukee or Helena you can still be injured, just depends on mechanics, pitch count, and all the other factors. The problem with bringing up position players too early is now you have slotted that position for a rookie who may not be ready. For example, the Brewers start Hart at 3B this yr instead of bringing in Helms. Maybe Hart really struggles...now what do you do?? Put him on the bench. But who replaces him??? And now you have a promising rookie sitting on the bench not getting any ABs. Now for a SP it's different. If he struggles you move him to the pen and he still gets some work. Then you can still use him to spot start until he gets his command back. I would love to see a guy like Martinez thrown into the mix. At the very least he would be a great middle relief guy that can throw 3 innings.
  15. Now things are getting interesting. Will Liriano be next to move up to AAA? Also, this has me thinking of other possibilities. Will guys like Martinez, Ford, Liriano, and Jones get a shot at being in the Brewers rotation in 2004? I'm not saying ALL of them but I'll bet one or even two of those guys will start the year in Milw. Afterall, pitchers going from AA right to the majors isn't exactly shocking anymore. Hendrickson and Diggins go to AAA. Parra and Sarfate go to AA in 2004 than Parra goes right to Milw in 2005? How about Nelson playing half a yr in AA then moving to AAA, allowing Fielder to move to AA after half a season in HD? Should be very interesting to watch. All in all, I'm in favor of being more aggressive than conservative. Especially with pitchers. Unless they're totally dominant they'll take some lumps whenever they finally make it to Milw.
  16. Please do not insult 9 year olds. My son is 9, and I can assure you his ability to spell, punctuate, and capitalize are far superior to this poster's ramblings.
  17. I understand WHY he's waiting to sign, and it makes sense on the surface. Wait and see what Young will get. However, I think his agent is doing him a real disservice. The amount of money in his first contract won't vary that greatly, maybe $200,000 or so. Nothing compared to the next contract he'll sign down the road if he turns out to be a great player. If he would have signed and played the 2nd half in Beloit, he's that much closer. Maybe it takes a year off his development time. Isn't it worth a bit of cash to get him playing and progressing through the system ASAP?
  18. A "closer" with an ERA of 5.00 and more hits than innings? Good god make it stop!
  19. I don't know how you can look at 2004 and plan for 79 wins. Shouldn't the goal be to win the division? How many Presidents, GMs, and Managers do we have to go through before they convince themselves, then the fans that they want to make a run for it? And trading Hart or Nelson for a SP is not what I'm talking about. Don't touch the core of the future, simply be a shrewd GM and get a couple more pieces of the puzzle. Pods, Kinney, Helms, Franklin, Ford, etc. etc. were not acquired by trading a player like Jenkins or future prospects. So why not trade guys like EY and Leskanic, make the right choices in FA during the off-season and make a run?!? Look, this team is a .500 club right now. Take away the horrible start and they're .500 ever since. So why not be optimistic and say we're going for it in 2004? This waiting for 2006 is a sucker bet. Is that the year Melvin flips the switch and the Brewers win the Central? It doesn't work that way. This should be the LAST year we doom ourselves to failure.
  20. Instead of trading Sexson or Jenkins, why not surround them with another starting pitcher or two and make a run at the World Series next year. This team is not that far away. Spend some money on a pitcher and maybe a bat in the OF and let's go after it in 2004. I'm sick of this losing attitude from the Brewers organization and fans. Don't you have to shoot for the stars eventually? I don't want to wait until the Huntsville All-Star team is in Milwaukee. Remember the last return to glory? D'Amico, Sheets, Gold, Neugabauer...it was all set. I'm not saying don't build for the future, just don't count on it. Play for NOW. Win NOW. What will you say if 2006 is still a below .500 season? Don't worry...lots of talent in Beloit...Look out for the Brewers in 2011!! Enough! It's been 20 years and we got the stadium and labor deal the Brewers wanted. So no more small market excuses. Build around Pods, Jenkins, Sexson, Helms, 3 solid SP, and a good pen.
  21. There's been enough games like this to make me believe it is "all coming together." And by the way, try to make an argument why Jenkins should not be in the All Star game. Good outing by Franklin, Ginter shows some pop again, Pods is on the bases like he owns them, and Jenks is an RBI machine.
  22. I know virtually nothing about the pitchers the Brewers selected in this year's draft. Now that the dust has settled, have you heard anything about these guys? I'm most interested in someone who can really bring the heat. Now I realize there's much more to pitching than a 95 MHP heater, but we'll save that discussion for another day. Can any of this year's picks really bring it? Also, have you heard any of the Brewers management or scouts comment on a particular pitcher they're excited about?
