  1. No African-American or Latino players back in Ruth's day, that's one advantage he had. Other than that, it's impossible to compare. People in general were smaller back then, no shifts, pitching was much different and Ruth didn't have to face 3 different pitchers every game. If 1920s Ruth was dropped into 2019 he wouldn't be very good. If I remember right, he had a fairly long swing. But go back just 20 years or so, Jeff Cirillo never made much when he played, he would make a ton today.
  2. For me it's: First Wisconsin Building Marquette Warriors Marc Plaza
  3. They were playing very well before they got him. Also, remember this was the roughly the same time Sterling Brown came on the scene, then Wilson. So whatever improvements have happened since the Hill trade it's not just about him. You also mentioned losing Hill would be a total loss. No it wouldn't. He already has provided value on the court for most of this season, and allowed the Bucks to dump a bunch of salary in the process. That is a big win. How do you replace Hill? Again, maybe DiVincenzo. Or, they could trade Snell for a PG. Better options than spending $18MM on a backup PG. Hey, I'm just trying to look out for Lasry's wallet. ; )
  4. Because most pitchers are RHP's and the Brewers already have enough guys who hit RHP's better. I still don't understand why many are obsessed with getting better against LHP's at the expense of getting worse against RHP's, who are the overwhelming majority. Braun, Aguilar, Perez, Pina, Cain, and Arcia are better against LHP's. Shaw, Gamel (barely), Thames, Yelich, Grandal, and Spangenberg are better against RHP's. Yelich and Grandal are very effective against LHP's, despite it not being their preferred split. Both groups have a balanced mix of dangerous hitters and role players, and they have defensive versatility. The roster is almost perfectly balanced in regard to facing LHP's and RHP's, but should probably tilt more towards facing RHP's because that's about 75-80% of plate appearances. It seems reactionary to want more mediocre RHB's just so you can throw 7 of them in the lineup every time an opponent starts an LHP. They did have a slump against LHP's last year, but I firmly believe that was a fluke. They have plenty of guys who can hit LHP's. Moustakas is a much better option than guys like Cabrera or Davidson. Just listing the players ignores where they'll be playing. Spangenberg should never face LHP. Shaw really shouldn't either, which means it would be helpful to have another bat to face LHP. Although, I did say earlier I wouldn't be opposed to giving Shaw a chance. Plus, if the plan is to bring Hiura or Dubon up at some point, they're fine. Also, keep in mind depending on who the RH bat is, they can be used against RHP as well- so it's not necessarily a LHP only bat.
  5. MLB is also littered with guys who developed their power tool later on. Far too early to write off his power.
  6. Hill at $18MM makes no sense on any level, and they're not going to do it. They may go over the cap the way it is, there's no way they're going over by another $18MM for an aging PG. I like Hill, I really do. But they can replace him for far less. And I just don't agree with your analysis of PG, CHL. You're talking about a PG that "runs the offense" but that's just not how the Bucks offense works. Look at how often Bledsoe has the ball in his hands. It's not anymore than Giannis, Brogdon, or Middleton. They spread the floor, move it around, drive and kick or take it all the way to the rack. Bledsoe is very good in this offense. Hill? He's not breaking anyone down and has the ball even less as a PG. They need a backup PG that can defend other quick PGs, that's the only requirement. In fact, I would prefer one that shoots a little better from 3 than Hill.
  7. PG doesn't even mean anything on the offensive side of the floor. Giannis starts the offense more often than not, and they'll even have Middleton or Brogdon do the same. Especially in Coach Bud's offense, PG is almost meaningless. That said, they do need someone to guard quick PGs on the other end of the floor. That's certainly not a job for Jennings! But there's 0% chance they pay Hill $18MM a year to do so. Maybe DiVincenzo? Honestly, I'm not sure because I don't recall how he did vs PGs at the beginning of the year. But if not him, they can find someone to fill that role on the cheap. Vets, G league guy, etc.
  8. Except this doesn't take place in a vacuum. It's the cumulative effect of new TV/radio deals, naming rights, revamping concessions to increase sales, churning out new merchandise to sell, etc. Any one part of this doesn't seem like much, but it all adds up. How they use it doesn't matter much either. Whether they use it to pay down debt, repairs, or even just add it to the bottom line. The better financial shape they're in, the more comfortable they will be spending more on player payroll.
  9. Exactly. As long as there's more money to improve the team I don't care one way or another. I agree. I was surprised at the vehemence of some of the negative opinions expressed here, although I shouldn't have been, as I've experienced a parallel situation to this one: From 1913 to 2006 my soccer team back home in London played at "Arsenal Stadium" - which we all just called "Highbury" (for the part of London it sat in). In 2006, the club moved to a new Stadium they had built (with private money) which held a lot more people. They did this to stay financially competitive. A part of that was, unfortunately, the sale of naming rights for the new Stadium (after 93 years of the same Stadium with the same name) - which were purchased by Emirates Airlines, leading to "Emirates Stadium". Much like the reaction here, Arsenal fans were up in arms about it at first but, like the views quoted above, we also realized that it was necessary to help keep the team competitive, so we stopped complaining. As we all hated the new name, most of us just seemed to adopt the phrase "going to The Arsenal" (which had been used by some for a long time anyway) or something similar, and that got us around our angst about the name. The thing to remember, as said by others here, it's just the name on a building. If Mark Attanasio uses that money to improve the team and the fan experience, I'm all for it - even if the name becomes a mouthful. I'll just say "I'm going to The Brewers" instead of "I'm going to Miller Park". Honestly, would have been better for everyone if the Gunners just went under.
  10. It's probably because it's a big pet peeve of mine that I notice it far more often. And yes, the instances of no lights in the middle of the night is not as common as earlier in the evening or bad weather when the lights still should be on.
  11. I think they’re now a mutual insurance company, so wouldn’t AmFam technically be owned by its policy holders? I got tons of mail about this ... probably should have read it closer. Yes, like the Packers fans own the Green Bay Packers ; )
  12. Actually, it IS their money and they can spend it however they want.
  13. Enough of the political talk please.
  14. I have no problem with it, better than Fiserv Forum at least. 100% of people I've talked to from other parts of the country either think it's Pfizer Arena or have no clue who Fiserv is or what they do. Miller isn't a Milwaukee company, so who cares? They can take their watered down swill with them. (BTW, I see a lot of people talking about how this will open up the beer options. But there already are a ton of other beer choices- and not just at the craft stand.)
  15. First tweet was from his buddy saying "We got them to talk about it on the radio, lol" Cmon, there was a Greinke thread already, nothing wrong with talking about a potential trade no matter how unlikely it is. But giving this guy the satisfaction of a whole thread about him is exactly what he wants. At least HH made it sound convincing for a while.
  16. Texting/ using phone while driving is dangerous, don't get me wrong. But what we don't seem to ever talk about is driving with no lights in the dark or bad weather. This is what bugs me. I'm not even talking about dawn/dusk, even though lights should be on them as well. It's all the people driving with no lights on when there's driving rain or snow and worse yet when it's night time. And I mean pitch black. This doesn't happen occasionally, I see it multiple times every night. Talk about dangerous!! I've already almost been in horrible accidents because I was about to change lanes on I-94, and thankfully barely noticed a car with no lights in my blind spot right before I moved over. I know people are used to auto headlights, and they turn off the auto without realizing it or something. But how can you be cruising down I-94 at 75 mph without realizing you don't have your headlights on???
  17. Play along, what would you like changed? Here's what I have: 1) Eliminate IR. Won't happen, so here's the rest: 2) IR should take place in controlled environment, not by a ref looking at a surface out on the field. 3) This would include refs looking real time at every play at multiple angles and they could throw a "virtual flag" if something is missed. 4) Everything can be reviewed. But still limited to the two challenges per half, but then all TO, scoring plays, and last 2 minutes officials review. 5) OT- Each team gets one possession, then proceed with current rules. 6) Illegal contact, def holding, etc. penalties on defense are not automatic 1st downs. 7) PI- 10 or 15 yd penalty, not spot of the foul. 8) Roughing QB- add 5 yard incidental, no automatic 1st down. 9) What is a catch? It is a catch unless there is clear evidence player didn't have control of the ball. 10) Pick plays- determine what is legal/ illegal and call it consistently. Actually, a rule change saying basically anything goes within the 1st five yards of scrimmage is worth looking at. Would get rid of a lot of ticky tack def holding calls too.
  18. I don't hate the idea, but as Joseph said it really doesn't work for roster construction. They already have 4 OF, with Perez basically the 5th. One more IF is needed, I just don't see them signing another OF unless it's someone with options.
  19. While not overly likely to happen, how much fun would it be to see Starlin absolutely mashing against the Cubs left-handed starters while in a Brewers uniform. He's not horrible against RHP either. Take away his awful September and his numbers are pretty nice across the board. I know we can't just eliminate a month or excuse the reasons, but playing out the season for a horrible team can't be good for your focus and energy. I know he didn't play SS last year, but if he could play avg at SS, it would be a another reason to make that trade. It may take a 3 team trade, not sure what the Marlins would want with Thames, other than freeing up some salary. Marlins may also want to hold on until the trade deadline and roll the dice.
  20. Cobb is a FA, so he doesn't need to be cut. Not a bad guy to have around if they can get him for a very low cap number. Crosby, I agree. Funny, as I was watching kickers yesterday nail FGs at crunch time I was thinking "I feel no confidence if Crosby was kicking right now." Yea, that's not proof of anything but Crosby lost his confidence somewhere along the line. It's a gamble though, because there's a lot of bad kickers out there too. Also watching these games, just confirmed how badly the Packers need to upgrade the O Line. You can throw any stats you want at me, they need an above avg O line more than anything else.
  21. The problem with platooning Shaw is, what do you do when the other team brings in a LH relief pitcher? Are you going to pinch hit him every time? If he rarely sees LHP for the first 2 months of the season, do you think he'll still be a 600 OPS guy against LHP? Probably far worse, and you'll basically be forced to PH for him or take a virtually guaranteed out. September and October baseball, yes absolutely try to protect him against LHP. In september you have basically unlimited PH options. In October, the games matter more and each at bat is critical. I think Shaw should be starting 5-6 days a week and against lefties...at least for the first few months of the season. As I said, if you want to give him some rope in April and May, fine. I could live with giving him a chance vs LHP for a couple months. If he's struggling again, yea I PH for him vs LHP. Depends on the game situation though.
  22. Shaw hit .599 vs LHP last year, he should not be in the lineup vs LHP. Want to give him some rope in April/May to see if he can improve? I have no problem with that. But I think an option of even an avg RH bat in his place would be a big improvement. I also don't buy into "they don't face LH starters very often." I don't know where/how to find the info but I would guess they faced LH starter at least 40 games last year. That's just my guess of course, could be wrong. Changed my mind on Moose after looking a the numbers. .721/ .763 the past two years vs LHP, that's even higher than what I thought. So I would be fine with him at 3B and Perez at 2B vs LHP. Still not ideal, but hey, not going to have All Stars at every position. Then Moose could still play vs RHP at 3B or 1B.
  23. I guess I don't see the issue. Cashman made it known Gray was on the block, which isn't always a bad idea. It lets all the other teams know he's ready to move him for the right deal. So far he hasn't seen a good enough offer to pull the trigger, has nothing to lose by waiting longer. He'll always be able to move him a month from now and get something in return, so why not try to get the best deal he can? I mean, I hate the Yankees too, but I don't see them doing anything unusual here.
  24. Take it outside boys. Nobody cares about your Brogdon/Kidd/Sociopath fight, or whatever it is you're fighting about.
  25. How do you limit him against LH? Shaw is even worse vs LH. All you have left at 2B/3B is Perez and Walker vs LHP which is pretty horrible.
