  1. Not saying I want to sign him long-term but I put more stock in his great April to mid-September (and overall career really) than his few postseason starts. I agree...but in the same respect, the goal is to win the World Series. If you fall off a cliff after 180 IP, you're not helping us achieve our goal. I think the fact that he's had his arm cut open already and then ran out of gas in October should give the front office pause, and rightfully so. Sure you are. You don't make the post season if he doesn't pitch well in the regular season.
  2. I have to believe that the arbitrators have a much firmer grasp of small sample than anybody pointing at his postseason stats as a reason for going with the Brewers offer.
  3. Well the bar was set pretty low last year with McGehee. I think a lot of the Green hype was him bing able to play 2B but I don't think he is really an option there anymore.
  4. So, he can't hit LH pitching and he is not strong defensively..........other than that he is a good player. Th platoon thing was covered before but he should be good on defense and probably above average for a 1B. His weakness at 3B was throwing. Not much throwing to do at 1B.
  5. Wrong sport dude. You are thinking of football.
  6. My expectations for Aoki are similar to Fukudome's production.(probably not that good actually) I don't think he is a top of the lineup guy on this team.
  7. and there is a good summation of my second problem with this whole situation.
  8. If the PAs were going to better hitting options, I guess it wouldn't bother me much. That is one of the two problems I have with taking Gamel out of the lineup. 100PA is a lot to give to an inferior hitter. If we had a decent backup right handed outfielder who could play decent defense I would have a different opinion.
  9. C'mon now, you nitpicked my post. Sorry about that.
  10. That leaves Braun or Hart, and the MVP is not the guy you mess around with. Therefore, as the roster is currently built, I have no problem with Hart occasionally getting some PT at 1B. This is where I disagree. The roster as currently built has all left handed backup outfielders. Of course Gamel will need some games off but not anywhere close to 30. Maybe half that.
  11. Outfield is a good place to platoon because of the large pool of players you can draw from. CF is tougher though. Gomez is deficient in one area, he is a really bad hitter.
  12. You are completly ignoring the fact that it isn't Gamel vs Hart it is Gamel/Hart vs Hart Aoki(or gritty vet™). Gamel will probably outhit Aoki. Hart will probably be a worse defender at 1B than Gamel. Aoki will probably be a better defender than Hart. Best case scenario is break even in my opinion. I think it is a net loss. I see no reason to give Gamel to many days off.
  13. I qualify this post with "If this is true." Wow, bad idea. Unless Gamel completely falls on his face in Spring Training he should get at least a couple months at 1B. The organization really seems to not like Gamel much.
  14. That assumes Barmes would have signed with us for an extra million. If he would have, sure he probably would have been the better choice. Projects to be a better hitter and probably a better defender. I wanted Barmes this offseason.
  15. I can't wait for the next 49ers game.
  16. Gonzales DRS is fantastic but his UZR is 12.2, 4.2, and -0.3 over the last 3 years. He might be above average but he is 35 so I wouldn't count on anything to far above average. DRS didn't really like him much until the last couple years. He has hung around average for the most part. Once you regress a bit for the uncertainty in defensive stats I think average is a good starting point. He hasn't been consistently one really good or really bad(like Yuni). He has bee consistently average or better though.
  17. He had a couple really good years on defense but I don't think Gonzalez will be much better than average on defense. End results for the hitting should be about the same as Yuni. Looks like their batted ball % are pretty similar except Gonzalez hits more HR/FB and he will see a couple more pitches a game.
  18. I bring in my own soda so they serve whatever I feel like buying at Quick Trip.
  19. What about a dark horse candidate like Brooks Conrad if he steals pt from Gamel? Somebody stealing playing time from Gamel would definitely be a problem to me.
  20. There are 2 things we can look at though when we are talking about stats. Production and true talent. WAR isn't necessarily trying to measure true talent. It is trying to estimate production. I think is does a very good job of that.
  21. If Gonzales plays bad defense he will be the one. Especially with Izturis on the roster.
  22. Of course a player in arbitration is going to get a raise or at the very least get the same amount of money. Players are grossly underpaid before they hit arbitration. Even after they hit arbitration in some cases.
  23. Because it seems like a lot of the discussion so far here about WAR, & specifically its use of UZR, really is calling for a defensive stat that depicts true talent. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but that's the general sense I'm getting. And I think if that's the kind of stat that people are after, I'm not sure it can be found. Probably not. At least not with one year of data. The number of chances will always be a problem with defensive stats even with perfect inputs. With perfect inputs though it would tell you about how many runs saved or lost over a season. FieldFX would help with that but it may not be publicly available anytime soon.
