  1. My wife is part time and I have a full time job for just the reason that you stated. Daycare is so expensive that if she got a full time job most if not all the money would go to daycare. Unfortunately because of my hours and her working weekends we hardly get to see each other.
  2. Yes and no. If everybody stays healthy is doesn't matter. We are covered at the corners with Gamel but don't really have any up the middle guys and have a really really big drop off if a pitcher gets hurt.
  3. Yes it does matter to some extent. If you have a highly ranked farm system you can trade prospects for better players than you can if you have a perceived bad farm system.
  4. I am sure there are people who see something special in some of the players but when those players are in A+ or lower and the ceiling for most of your prospects is middle of the rotation starters your system is going to look pretty bad. 30th before the Greinke trade seems a little harsh though. Well we only really lost Odorizzi in that trade as far as valuable prospects.(depending on what you read he was maybe a #2 tops) I don't believe Jeffress was considered worth much as a prospect and it is hard to argue for him much considering how little he has played over the last couple years.
  5. Good luck Chris with your future team. As long as it isn't against the Brewers that is.
  6. I used to be interested in Daisy as well but I grew out of it.
  7. Really what you want to do with Gomez is minimize the impact he can make with his bat since it is so bad. I would rather have a bad bottom of the order instead of sticking those guys in the middle of our good hitters and killing a rally. The reason a guy is a 100 RBI guy is because they have guys on base. I think you are using way to small a sample of stats to make any judgment on where he should hit. I any case by your logic we should bat Gomez #7. His .322/.395/.717 line batting 7th is his best batting line in any spot in the order. He also shouldn't play in Miller Park judging from his .264/.318/.582(yes, that's OBP/SLG/OPS) batting line which is significant;y worse than his overall line. Speed is best leveraged after the #5 guy. Stealing bases hurts less and helps more in front of guys with less SLG. Our hitters are in pretty clear tiers. No way do I want the 100 extra AB the #2 gets over the #6 going to the bottom tier. Tier 1 Fielder Braun Tier2 Weeks Tier 3 Hart McGehee The other guys Lucroy Betancourt Gomez.
  8. Are the Cubs signing Cappy?
  9. Nice. Why didn't they just ask you to bring some pickles and make things simpler?
  10. Rogers probably spends most of the year in AAA building up his innings so he can be ready in 2012.
  11. I wouldn't want any limits on contracts at all. I would make teams share something like 90% of their tv revenues and 70% of their ticket sales.(as an example, I am not sure of the exact numbers that would be needed) Skinflints like the Marlins not getting money to put in their pockets. Big market teams keep an advantage but it is significantly lessened. I don't' want owners pocketing money.
  12. "I'm out"
  13. If the rumors about the Yankees offer are true he really didn't give the Phillies much of a discount. The Yankees offered 7/$148 I believe. He is getting more per year from the Phillies and can almost match the total money in one less year if his 2016 option is picked up or vested. 5 years/$120M (2011-15), plus 2016 option signed by Philadelphia as a free agent 12/14/1011:$11M, 12:$21.5M, 13:$25M, 14:$25M, 15:$25M, 16:$27.5M club option ($12.5M buyout)option becomes guaranteed with 200 IP in 2015 or 400 IP in 2014-15 limited no-trade protection I would like to see all teams within $50m. That way the rich teams can still sign a couple more players than the bottom teams but every team can keep one or two of their stars for their entire careers.
  14. No I am not kegging. If I keg that is in the distant future. Probably at least a year from now. My next steps are temp control, full boils then all-grain. I am still in an apartment so space is tight. No fridge for fermenting. Have to build a fermentation chiller or use coolers.
  15. You are not alone. We got very little out of CF last year. I think Gomez and Dickerson will play enough defense to match anything we got last year. SS wasn't great either but we got worse defensively there depending on who plays. Split OBP SLG OPS as C .311 .365 .676 as 1B .398 .468 .866 as 2B .366 .465 .831 as 3B .341 .462 .803 as SS .284 .316 .600 as LF .368 .496 .864 as CF .306 .380 .686 as RF .336 .511 .848 as DH .214 .174 .388
  16. The Phillies are not some small guy to empathize with but they are not the Yankees. We will see how the payrolls turn out for 2011 but typically there are the middle guys, the rich guys then the Yankees. They are almost as far above the other top guys as the top guys are above the middle guys.
  17. Had some @#%%!%% Brew yesterday.(Dogfish Head Miles Davis album brew) Not to impressed but I am not a fan of Porters. My wife really liked it. It was a bit smoother than a typical porter. It had a sort of semisweet aftertaste. Chocolate flavors. Didn't notice the 9% ABV at all. I am currently drinking a Blue Moon Abbey Ale. It's ok. Sort of a plum/raisin after taste. A little fruitier than I like my abbeys. I like that BMC are getting more into craft beer although I feel they have come up short most of the time. Michelob Dunkel is my favorite so far.I still make a better Dunkel than they do though. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gifhttp://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tongue.gif Just got 4 New Belgium globe glasses and I think they are fantastic for beer. About 16+oz glasses and they are pretty all purpose. After reading more about Belgian beer(partway through Brew Like a Monk) I have to recant some of my derision of brewing with adjuncts. Belgian beer seems to use a lot of adjuncts. Lots of sugars to boost alcohol content while keeping the beer lighter. I am not sure they use it to the extent brewers do in the US but I can't just ignore that they do.
  18. It really hasn't been 2 seasons. It is only a little over 1 and a half. I understand why nobody agrees with my opinion but like I said, McGehee was not much of a hitter in the minors and suddenly he hits way better. I don't expect it to continue. Halfway through 2011 I may change my mind. Just because a player has done what was asked of him doesn't mean we should just stick with him if we have a better player. I wouldn't call a .760 OPS nothing. Gamel did ok in his limited chances and it is reasonable to expect him to do better with regular playing time. Why? If you think a player can be better why should we just stick with the current guy? To you it may not make sense but you probably don't think Gamel can be a better player than McGehee. I think Gamel makes it as a backup at the very least. I bet McGehee will start though. From some of Macha's quotes Gamel was lined up to make the roster this year until he got hurt.
  19. As long as we are clear that arguing for McGehee no more logical than arguing for Gamel.I'm not using opinion to argue for McGehee, though. It is your opinion that McGehee won't regress despite his lack of hitting in the minors. You think you are arguing fact when you are not. Our opinions on how to judge players are just different. As am I. We have more MLB history for McGehee. We also have MiLB history we can use to form opinions. You are just choosing to give less weight to both players' minor league numbers than I am. Strawman. Nobody ever said he won't hit because he was a waiver pickup. We are both using facts to form our opinions. We just are weighing the facts differently.
  20. As long as we are clear that arguing for McGehee no more logical than arguing for Gamel.
  21. Gamel is probably a better and cheaper option than Branyan. Any money on bench players is a waste if we don't upgrade SS.
  22. They went over budget last year. This year they should as well. I think it actually makes more sense to go over budget this year than it did last year. I know it has come up several times now but those few extra marginal wins in 2011 are huge.
  23. I think most people are concerned with getting the best bat in the lineup. Handedness is a distant second.
  24. I think it was mentioned that many of their pitchers are only signed for a couple years so this is a move for 2012 and beyond also. It also protects them from having an injury hurt their season much.
  25. I don't have a problem with the players getting paid. I don't want to see the money go into the owners' pockets. I just want to see every team with $50m. That way the rich teams would still be able to sign a couple more big name guys but every team would be able to keep at least one of their guys through their whole careers. I have to be honest that I feel no connection to any players right now. I know they are all going to move on at some point so why should I?
