  1. You have to use them right though. There is some variation in them but they are good enough to tell the difference between awful, bad, average, good, and elite if you look at 2-3 years worth of metrics.
  2. I trust the metrics over a fan watching games. Braun is a good example of a guy who is below average on defense but doesn't make any noticeable mistakes so people think he is good.
  3. Your lack of knowledge -- but more notably your disinterest in acquiring any knowledge -- on the players added in the trades this offseason is a bit much. Your opinion on any of them is basically empty. You were around & very actively posting all during the developmental build up to contention & then MLB contention in the late 2000s-early 2010. But it's like you can't even remember that that's how the Brewers built their best squad since the glory days of the 80s. I'm sure this post will do absolutely nothing to influence your opinion, & strangely will actually probably embolden it even more. But it's really, really tiring to read post after post from you knocking trades when you do zero homework & frankly seem to take a smug pride in not being able to be bothered because you've seen it all before & don't need to learn anything. I get that it genuinely matters a lot to you if the 2016 team wins 78 games compared to 59, & I don't find your frustration there irritating at all -- to each his own. But enough of the self-righteous rants about young players that you've never seen or even bothered to try to learn a little about. Just Briggs being Briggs. I don't bother reading his posts and haven't for a while. Makes the forum better.
  4. I don't think it was that people really liked Rogers that much as the fact he was already at 1B, in the system, and cheap. Looked like a guy we should have given a chance to instead of going out and getting someone or moving another guy to 1B.
  5. So kind of like most players he has good and bad months.
  6. 10-15 over the limit is kind of the norm from what I can tell. Widely accepted, at least in the 45mph+ zones. For merging, I think the person merging has the responsibility to dlow down and fit in with the traffic. Of course I expect the person on the freeway to move over if they can. I always move over if I can.
  7. Sure they matter but not enough that they should come into a conversation more than once in a great while. I doubt you are going to find two players very often that it will come down to strikeouts. I also forgot to add position ahead of strikeouts. I believe a few years ago Melvin said they would have to turn 100 strikeouts into in play outs to gain one run. There are so many things that matter more than strikeouts. Hard to say but I would guess no as long as they do other things well. It would be a frustrating team to watch.
  8. Sure all else being equal I would take the guy who strikes out less, but strikeouts are far down the list of what I would look at. Probably the last thing. Off the top of my head the order of things I would look at.(RBIs do not make the list) wOBA wrc+ OPS OBP, SLG, BA how they compare or where a player gets their offensive value. The combination will give a good idea of walk rates, whether they rely on balls in play, how much power they have. defense Baserunning (mostly SB vs CS) HR Strikeouts
  9. All stats are is a way to judge a player's talent. Strikeouts don't correlate very well with whatever underlying skill that makes a hitter good or bad so they are not a good way to judge a hitter. They do however seem to correlate well with how good a pitcher is. My guess is pitchers with more strikeouts have better control or velocity making it tougher for hitters to hit the ball well off of them. The underlying skill for a hitter would probably be how well they can drive a ball which could actually show up as more strikeouts if they are more selective with what they swing at. This seems to be a pretty good example of what happens to a hitter when they try to strikeout less. I think it would take more than 50 points of OPS. The difference in a strikeout vs a ball in play out is pretty small especially after you figure in extra double plays which are way worse than a strikeout.
  10. His contract never pays more than $15m per year.
  11. Agree with jerico all you want. Strikeouts don't correlate well with runs on offense. They do for pitching. High K pitching allows fewer runs. Low K teams may or may not score more runs. My guess is it has to do with how a ball is put in play and a hitter has more control over how a ball is put in play than a pitcher does. How a ball is put in play is way more important than if a ball is put in play. As far as scoring runs consistently, I bet most fans feel that way about their team. Interesting read on scoring runs.
  12. Strikeouts correlate with more success for pitchers. Strikeouts don't correlate either way with hitting. Strikeouts do matter, but only in certain situations. Those situations come up so infrequently that strikeouts are not a good stat to look at for hitters unless you are talking about pinch hitting.
  13. Not sure if that would be the case if he goes back to 7.
  14. You should be okay with Windows 7 for quite a while. I wouldn't really consider 10 until it gets closer to the end of the year when the upgrade is free. Hopefully they will have most of the issues ironed out by then.
  15. You have to make a determination if a trade was good at the time of the trade. It looked like we got good value for Greinke at the time of the trade. Looking back it really was a bad trade. Hopefully we have better scouts and analytics going forward than we did at the time of this trade so we will have more success.
  16. Go back to the previous version of Windows you were using. I plan to reinstall 8.1 after the semester. 10 is even worse than I originally thought. I wouldn't recommend it unless you hate your current OS.
  17. I would completely disagree. His couple months didn't get us into the postseason and probably cost us draft position. His couple good months postponed the rebuild and gained us nothing.
  18. The KC Royals say hello. I don't have any idea why anyone would want the Brewers to strive for mediocrity. That is a losing plan. Putting the best team you can on the field when you are only a .500ish team is flat out stupid. Stockpile the talent all at one level.
  19. Yup, nothing to do with the fact he has s low 90's fastball and the last time he pitched for a team other than the Brewers he sucked. It's all the domestic violence that he was never convicted of from years ago.
  20. He does. Don't even bother responding to his Braun at 3B obsession.
  21. Exactly. I hate when people say that pro athletes are overpaid. If you were one of the less than .1% of the population that could do a job for a company that makes hundreds of millions of dollars a year directly because of what you do, you would want to be paid accordingly. Not sure what percentage it is but at one point MLB salaries were only half of the cost of running a franchise. I think it was some point early in the 2000's. There are a lot of employees beyond just the MLB players connected to a franchise.
  22. My guess is the top payroll teams were good a year or two before they were a top payroll team. They paid for talent knowing they would have dead money and bad contracts at some point. If you remember back, the Yankees were best when they had young homegrown guts augmented by high priced vets. The dufference is they were able to keep their core players together longer and continue to augment that core for a prolonged period of time.
  23. They could easily sign some of those guys to extensions too.
