  1. 1) New Glarus - They make the top spot not because they make my favorite beer(D-Man), but because of their Unplugged series of beers. I don't like most of the Unplugged beers however it is nice to have a brewery try such a wide range of beer. Lambic wouldn't have even been on my radar if not for New Glarus. I would be surprised if everybody couldn't find at least one beer New Glarus makes throughout the year that is to their liking. I think we are lucky to have a brewery that makes solid to spectacular beer in such a large variety. 2) Bell's - They make my 2nd favorite beer(Oberon Ale) and several other solid beers in a wide range of categories. 3) Hacker-Pschorr - My gateway beer was their Hefe Weisse. Without that I would still be drinking Lite and Leinies. 4) Ommegang - Of course this is where my list falls apart. I am perfectly happy sticking mostly to New Glarus and Bell's. I had to get them on because of their Abbey Ale.(8.5% ABV!) 5) New Belgium, Central Waters, and Great Dane get special mention in the 5th spot for me. A brewery has to make a wheat beer I like to make the top 5.(I let Ommegang slide with a dubbel) I would put Great Dane solidly in the top 5 but they don't bottle and distribute their beer. You have to go to the brew pub to get it. It takes a special trip and it isn't quite good enough to warrant a special trip more than once or twice a year. Central waters and New Belgium do some things well. Neither really makes a beer I would choose over other readily available beers.
  2. Didn't Egyptian mythology change almost every time the Pharaoh changed? I know they had people's images taken off of everything all over Egypt if the Pharaoh didn't like you.
  3. I don't understand giving up a 1st round pick for a guy who you might only have for a year.
  4. I think it would be a reasonable goal if FA pitching looked better. As it is, they are mostly uninspiring except for the top players who are likely to go for more than we want to commit in dollars or years.
  5. The Brewers would have about $18m to work with if Hall, Looper, and Weathers money is not counted towards the salary. I doubt that it will show up on any payroll lists anywhere. However, I would be willing to bet it will count against our payroll when looking at what we can spend. Per Cot's Super 2 A player with almost 3 years of Major League service time may become eligible for arbitration. To qualify, a player must: * have at least 2 years of service, but less than 3, and * have accumulated at least 86 days of service in the previous year, and * rank in the top 17% of all 2-year players in service time. The cutoff point generally falls between 2 years, 128 days of service and 2 years, 140 days. Seems to put Gomez easily within super 2 status, which really makes the deal look even worse in my eyes.
  6. World coming to an end. I agree with FTJ. I don't think any of the FA pitching is good enough to really help us much. Hardy was probably our best trading chip to bring back some decent pitching without damaging our farm system. I think Bush would be a non-tender candidate if we had better pitching depth. As it is right now, we probably only have 4 starters right now and Bush is one of them. We probably need 3 more which seems like it would be pretty tough, 4 would seem impossible. That is provided we are going to actually try and compete in 2010.
  7. I am disappointed we didn't at least offer abry to Lopez. I can sort of understand Cameron since it was kind of risky. He might not get more than a one year deal anywhere. Lopez seemed to me like a lock to get a multi-year deal somewhere though. I was not happy with Weeks production this year. Specifically his dramatic drop in BB%. He was starting to walk more so it is tough to say what he would have done for the entire year.
  8. Picked up Dark Horse Brewery's Reserve Special Black Ale. It is a very very dark black beer. My wife loved it. Coffee and Chocolate flavors. I was going to ask everybody their top 5 favorite breweries, but I really can't come up with 5 myself very easily.
  9. I think Melvin said they were at $78M in payroll already.
  10. Average MLB player by position in 2009. All but the best hitting catchers would be below average hitters if moved to 1B. 11. Just got back from Thanksgiving at my mom's and we had quite a selection of beer to taste. Lindeman's Kriek - Lambic, I really don't like fruity beer and would say it is similar to NG Wisconsin Belgium Red but not as sweet. Much like a wine cooler. Cranberry Special Ale, Sand Creek Brewery - Cranberry wasn't very strong, didn't like it. Shine On, Central Waters - I thought it was good and wouldn't turn it down if offered. Wouldn't go out of my way to get it again either. and my favorite, Ommegang Abbey Ale. Fantastic beer made in Cooperstown, New York. I guess the style is a Dubbel. My first thought(and my brother in law's) was wheat beer. Don't swirl it though. Edit: Just browsing the Ommegang website and it looks like residents of New York can order beer over the internet. I really wish we could do that for breweries within Wisconsin. Our distribution laws in this state suck big time.
  12. Put the WBC in Debatable/TBD and I agree with your list.
  13. Last year Hardy's WAR was 1.4. Cameron's was 4.3. If they spent their money on, say, Carl Pavano (3.7) and Aaron Harang (2.5), they likely come out ahead when the value of Gomez and Escobar is added. It isn't what a player did last year only. Of course Hardy in 2009 is easily replaced if you think that is his true worth. We shouldn't be looking at 2009 only though. Doing so is a huge mistake. Hardy has had WARs of 4.5, 4.9 and 1.4 over the last 3 years. I think using only the 1.4 WAR to value him is undervaluing him. He may not reach those 4+ WARs again, but he should be much closer to those than the 1.4 from 2009. Even after freeing up money, I doubt we could afford those 2 guys you suggest. People keep going on about how we freed up $15M and not mentioning that some of that is going back into raises for current players. Harang alone is due $12.5M next year. Not to mention the prospects we would have to give up. I think he's saying that if we have $20 million tied up in 6 wins provided by Hardy+Cameron, freeing up $20 million to spend on pitching isn't likely to net 6 wins of pitching. We might be getting more balanced at the expense of getting worse overall. We'll have to see what DM has up his sleeve. Yup, that's what I meant. I was hoping Hardy would get packaged with other players for a pitcher and address our real needs since I don't think most of the FA pitchers hold much promise. I hope Melvin will prove me wrong. I still think he gets another Looper type guy next year. The leftover FA pitcher on the market.
  14. I understand projections, but look at what Bill James' projection for Josh Hamilton. I can't say definitively that a player who last year led the Southern league in BA would be the worst offensive 1B in the NL (but I would say that he would make Prince look like Sexson at 1B). The line Lucroy put up in the Southern League last year would have been below average for an NL 1B. I have serious doubts about Salome offensively as well. His great year in AA(2008) came with a .401 BABIP. His next best OPS was .806. Below average for a 1B.
  15. No one really seemed to lay out a plan of how the Crew would have added decent SP with Cameron and Hardy still on board. I question how we get good pitching without either of them. Sure we freed up money, but it isn't like the pitchers are likely to have anywhere near the same impact as Hardy or Cameron.
  16. In my opinion, Lucroy wouldn't be average at 1B. 1st basemen, especially in the NL are very good hitters. He is projected at about .710 OPS for next year. That would have made him the worst regular 1B in the NL last year. Even if he can get up to an .800 OPS that would only make him better than 3 guys last year. Better?
  17. People tend to blur the line between Selig's ownership tenure in Milwaukee (especially the latter part, ignoring that he did get Miller Park built and kept the team in Wisconsin) with his tenure as commissioner. Don't forget he brought baseball back to Milwaukee in 1970. Maybe we have baseball in Milwaukee without Selig. I think without himw we don't have baseball in Milwaukee.
  18. The 2° Below has a 6.6% ABV. Had the NG Snowshoe Red Ale which I thought was pretty good. I believe the Goose Island winter seasonal was pretty popular last year.
  19. I have seen some threads calling him the teams worst hitter?? How?? If he can draw some more walks he will be a great lead off guy Not anymore. That title probably goes to Gomez now or Kendall if he comes back. Escobar is probably only the 2nd(or 3d with Kendall back) worst hitter on the team. Even if Escobar can draw some walks, he hits for very little power and no, I don't mean home runs.
  20. Way too many people treat their opinions as facts I fault the readers. Almost everything posted on this board is an opinion. Almost nothing posted should be treated as fact. Just because somebody has a strong opinion it shouldn't be read as them posting something thinking it is a fact.
  21. Lucroy wouldn't be average at 1B. 1st basemen, especially in the NL are very good hitters. He is projected at about .710 OPS for next year. That would have made him the worst regular 1B in the NL last year. Even if he can get up to an .800 OPS that would only make him better than 3 guys last year. Gamel I think will probably put up a league average OPS for a 1B, but it wouldn't be as valuable since he would have to put up a .370+ OBP and I thik he will be more in the .350-.360 range.
  22. I wouldn't be strongly opposed to trying to extend him for 2 years into his free agency. Not sure it is a good idea though. Kind of sucks that we have 2 of the best hitters in the league at their position but they are the 2 least valuable defensive positions. Forgot to add that they are suspect on defense.
  23. If the pitching prospects are good enough, we might be able to sink more money into Fielder. I would still prefer not to tie up 20%+ of the payroll in one player.
  24. I bet something like that would level the playing field a lot, especially if it was a significant amount, like 10-20% of the total contract they sign the FA to. I would think it would make the smaller teams even less likely to sign free agents if you make them pay money on top of the contract for the player. It may give smaller teams more money for their own players. On the other hand, if a team has a high profile free agent, they may let the player go for the money and keep only second tier guys.
  25. He was a 1B when he was drafted...
