  1. I really don't understand the arguing for another Looper instead of Cameron. Looper has been one of the worst SP in MLB this year. Replacing CV, Burns and whoever else with another Looper level pitcher is a minimal upgrade even if we take Looper's best year as a starter.
  2. They probably would have had to trade Cameron or another player as well. Signing a player like CC would have severely limited our flexibility to fill holes on a yearly basis. Yes it is a much bigger risk and why small market teams can't realistically sign a top FA is they want to be competitive. I don't doubt we could shell out a high contract on a year to year basis, but once the length required to sign those top guys is figured in, you severely hurt your franchise for the duration of the contract. Of course value is value, but when you sign free agents you don't get good value. Like ennder said, the Yankees pay more for win than almost any other team in baseball. They don't have to find good value. Teams outside of the top salary teams simply cannot sign top FA if they want to be competitive.
  3. Any team has a chance to sign CC, if they structure their budget properly. It's certainly a bigger risk for many teams, but there's no reason to act like they couldn't spend the money that way if they chose to. To look at it another way, I would guess that many teams spend the money that CC makes and get's less return than he has usually provided. Of course every team has a realistic chance to sign any player. However most teams that sign a top FA wouldn't be able to field a competitive team if they did without having a very good MiLB system. The top salary teams can sign more of these players, have a poor minor system and continue to win games. If we had signed CC this year, for example, we probably wouldn't be as good. We have several players that wouldn't be on our team right now because we couldn't afford them.
  4. Free agent draft every off season with slotted contracts.
  5. Braun changing his approach at 2 strikes would make him a drastically different player. There is no way he drives the ball as hard if he changes his approach and he would have lost many HR off his stat line in 2008 if he changed his approach with 2 strikes.
  6. Just saw the Pinella ejection from Sunday. I guess they really only have to be in the general area of 2B to get the out there. Link It's there after the commercial.
  7. I don't think people are really worried about the bottom teams as much as the middle teams that all have to compete for half the playoff spots. I also think people want to see sustained success from their team or at the very least see the top teams have trouble sustaining success. I don't think that will ever happen. There is always going to be some disparity. I think all the other major sport prove that.
  8. Yes we could sign Braun to a long term contract. Paying Braun what he is worth on the open market would severely limit our flexibility to sign other players and more than likely we would end up with very mediocre team at best.
  9. $3.7M option or $400,000 buyout. That isn't exactly cheap for a soon to be 40 year old reliever.
  10. Plain and simple the more productive your outs the more runs you would score. In specific situations that is correct. Overall, making productive outs is bad. Look at the pages in the links posted by a few posts back in the thread. They show there is little correlation to runs scored and productive outs.
  11. Here is the video. Helms in the center of things again. I think the announcers were upset. Link
  12. Instead of directly compensating the team losing a free agent, it would seem more appropriate to distribute the picks according to the free agent rankings. Continue to take picks away from teams that sign free agents and make all compensation picks as sandwich picks. Type A's get a pick after round one in order of FA rankings followed by Type B compensation picks then the second Type A compensation picks. Remember that as bad as we got screwed over on our CC compensation, the Jays got a 3rd rounder for AJ Burnett. Right now having your Type A sign with a bad team gets you a pick at the top of the 2nd round which after figuring in the sandwich picks is more like round 3.
  13. Both third strikes looked off the plate. The one to Cam was close enough that I am not to upset, but the one to Braun looked almost in the next batter's box.
  14. Hit on one high draft pick in the NBA and your team is set for a decade pretty much. The best way to get ahead in the NBA is to pretty much suck really bad for a year so you get a good draft pick.
  15. UZR/150 has him as -14 as a 1B and -11.8 as a LF. Just under a year worth of innings at 1B for his career though. Pretty consistently bad, but not 100% conclusive. Probably good enough to make a good guess that he will be a bad 1B. Fielder is a -8.8 for his career.
  16. This doesn't really make the market of baseball cards much clearer really. Topps has 7 different lines of baseball cards out for the 2009 season. Link They have the Allen & Ginter line as well as Bowman.
  17. No to both. We have been over this earlier and his defense is, well to put it very nicely, bad.
  18. If you had to guess, how times out of 10 do you think Braun/Hardy get that throw to HP to gun out Counsell? Deosn't matter. They were not the ones in the field. I think Fischer may have forgotten that the juice box has a short left field. The umpire may have been where he should be. He wasn't in a position to make the correct call. I just watched the replay and it was much closer than I originally thought. The umpire moved almost into the field of play to make the call. He was not quite off to the side during the play. I think it would have been better if the umpire had tried to get in a better position sooner. He did try to get in a better position though.
  19. What is so wrong about guys on 2nd and 3rd with one out, with Prince Fielder at the plate? The IBB that follows.
  20. It is not as easy to find cards in stores. These exclusive deals suck. We have already had them in videogames. The ones who suffer are the consumers. I don't think consumers are so stupid that they can't handle having more than one choice in baseball cards. This may put a huge dent in game used type cards. Game worn jerseys specifically. I try to collect cards with either a game used item or a signature. Only players who we draft and brring up through the system.
  21. As I stated above, I dont think last night's call was "blown" -- and frankly Counsell probably should not have been sent. I blame our windmill than I blame blue. I disagree. The call was wrong. It was a blown call. Discussing whether he should have been sent is another matter entirely.
  22. I am curious what other play you are referring to. I think there was a play on Wednesday against LA where Counsell slid under a tag as well. Top of the 4th inning. Third out. I thought Counsell slid under the tag as well last night. The umpire positioning is bad. This is just a little less of an annoyance than umpires not getting help on a check swing.
  23. I am more than a casual fan and really can't afford to go to more than a few games a year already. This would cut even further into my games. Things start to cost more when you have kids. This will have a much bigger impact on a family going to a game than a person only buying one ticket.
  24. Develop pitching internally or trade for it. There really isn't a good way to do much more than get replacement level pitchers in FA without paying through the nose. Either that or giving out a multi-year contract at a high price. Pitching is a high risk area to put money into. Pitchers get hurt, a lot. Position players are a much lower risk investment. Not to mention Cameron in CF makes all our pitchers better.
