  1. This year only. Look at his career stats instead. I am going to believe the 753 PA over 116 PA. vs RHP .293/.398/.568/.966 vs LHP .260/.341/.492/.834
  2. Nothing against Gamel... because he had some nice pinch hits while he was here, but you are going to get a good at bat from Counsell everytime. Gamel looked overmatched at times. and Gamel still almost matched Counsell's numbers and should be expected to do much better given his MiLB numbers. It isn't a SLG heavy OPS where Gamel has SLG to make up for OBP. Their SLG is even. Gamel walked much more to get his OBP which would explain the even SLG. My guess is the next lineup aggravation will be seeing Lopez leading off against LHP. He doesn't have much of a platoon split and the rest of our guys(outside of Fielder) crush LHP. Lopez is actually a little worse over his carer against LHP than he is against RHP.
  3. If Lopez can keep playing like he has been so far this season or like he did in 2005, great. Otherwise, it was probably pretty pointless. I think everybody feels this way. The main point of disagreement seems to be whether or not he will continue to hit like he has this year or fall back to his career levels for the rest of the year. Mercedes seems like a reliever at best. You say that like league minimum price players in the pen have little or no value. But Lopez can fake it at SS and play a pretty good 3B. He's the quintessential utility man. There's no reason to think he couldn't play 1B or OF too. A guy that can play multiple positions and hit within shouting distance of league average has value. His career numbers suggest he will hit a little over a win worse than a league average player over an entire year. I think the suggestion that he can play a decent 3B may have some merit, but so can Hall. Lopez is a terrible SS and about an average or slightly better 2B. His defense brings nothing to the table really. Counsell is a better defender at SS and 2B and probably 3B as well.
  4. I think you have to stay down a minimum of 10 days unless there is an injury on the MLB club.
  5. I second the Roque, but I can't be unhappy about getting a leadoff hitter. The problem is that he probably really ins't a good leadoff option. Gamel would probably have been a better lead off option. If you don't believe that by now after reading this whole thread, there isn't much point in trying to change your mind. Even if he did accept Arby's, he would still welcome a trade (which would allow for a trade), I would have to assume. I think that if he did end up back with the Brewers, we wouldn't be able to trade him until after June 15th.
  6. Only because Macha refuses to just play Gamel every day and give those guys at least every other day off.
  7. Yup, tour is pretty weak. Really nice looking facility though. Stone Soup is my year round beer since it came out earlier this year. I like it even better than Hacker-Pschorr. I will have to vote for it in the fall so it continues to be a year round beer. I had the New Glarus Berliner Weisse today. It is one of their Unplugged beers. Not good at all. Again, my fault for not reading the label. It clearly says it is Pino Grigio like. Sour beer colored white wine is what it tasted like. I don't like white wine.
  8. I used wOBA specifically because it includes SB. A stat including SB should give him a higher value and be benificial to Lopez. It shows that even when including SB he is still a below average player. Couple that with a -15 defense in Dewan's plus/minus system(Durham was -11, Cano -17 for reference) and a career -.04 UZR/150 and he is probably about a replacement level player having a really good year. He is also -21 from 2006-2008 at 2B compared to -27 for Durham and -28 for Weeks in the plus/minus. Keep in mind that he spent a good deal of time at SS in those years and was in Michael Young territory at SS(FL -34, MY -33). Mock wOBA and anything beyond basic stats if you it makes you eel better. However, at the very least look at the basic stats beyond just this year. He may have been mediocre the past two or three seasons, but since he is playing well this season and only under contract for this season, it's a relatively moot point. No, it isn't. Looking at previous year's stats will give you a much better picture of what a player should be expected to do. Looking at half a year and thinking a player will continue to perform at that level is wrong at best.
  9. Ok, he about as good a hitter as Counsell. Without the split so he isn't even a good platoon player like Counsell is.
  10. His wOBA this year is .345 which is basically league average. Over 2006-2008 he had wOBA's of .336, .295, .320. For comparison sake Kendall/Hall/Lopez .321/.369/.336 .272/.317/.295 .293/.297/.320 He is a slightly better hitter than Kendall, not much else.
  11. I don't think this move helps us much if at all. The only gain may be if Gamel is sent down and we stop using his service time. Lopez looks to be in the Weeks/Durham level of defender at 2B. Slightly below average to a little above average at best. He is 72% at SB wich is barely above breaking even. His splits against RHP and LHP are both under .340 OBP over 2006-2008. His SLG is also pretty low. We would probably be better off just using Gamel more and playing Counsell and McGehee at 2B.
  12. A player with 5 years of service who has been traded in the middle of a multi-year contract may, during the off-season, require his new team to either trade him or let him become a free agent. If the player is eventually traded, he's not eligible to demand a trade again under the current contract and loses free agency rights for 3 years. However, the 2007-11 CBA eliminated this right for players signing multi-year contracts under the new CBA. Players signed to multi-year deals before the effective date of the 2007-11 CBA retain the right to demand a trade if traded during the life of their current contracts. This is what I found with a quick search. Looks like Halladay's current contract is 2008-2011, but he signed the extension in 3/06.
  13. Melvin mentioned that in the blog. TH quoted him directly.
  14. As for the lineup it is silly to think changing the lineup changed our runs scored, I hope you realize this and were just looking for excuses to complain. We wouldn't have scored 10 runs had we used last nights lineup, it had at best a negligible effect. Of course it doesn't mean much in any single game, but putting your worst hitter lead off repeatedly is just plain dumb. Cameron slides late quite often.
  15. The point, and most important thing in my opinion, is that interference is rarely called. Runners start their slide at the bag or slide when they can't reach the bag all the time.
  16. #9: Tim Lincecum, RHP, San Francisco: 5.3 WAR 501 career innings, 2.76 career FIP. He's on his way to a second straight Cy Young award and should destroy the previous record for first year arbitration eligible pitcher salary if the Giants can't lock him up long term this winter, even as a super-two. He's improved his previously poor command to the point that it's hardly an issue anymore, and his strikeout rate has actually risen from his rookie season despite a two mph drop in fastball velocity. The inherent risk with all pitchers keeps him below the eight premium bats ahead of him, but he'd command more in trade than any pitcher on earth. So the top 5 are all hitters.
  17. When did Bill Hall regress to his norm? 2007
  18. Looking at Hardy's numbers from this year and ignoring his success in previous years is foolish. He is a much better hitter than he has shown this year. Stats over half a year rarely accurately reflect a players true talent.
  19. The real test of popularity will come if both teams suck again. My bet is the Packers will be much more popular. Of course, much of the lack of brewers popularity likely had to do with fans being disgruntled with the ownership group,
  20. At least Baker puts speedy guys who can't hit at the top of the order. Kendall and Rivera are likely to put up a similar OPS with Kendall having a better OBP and Rivera a better SLG.
  21. Escobar may be a good hitter, but Hardy is a better hitter right now and Escobar will be a better hitter in 2016 than he will be this year.
  22. Pierre is about a half a win above average on defense. Pierre has had wOBA's of .319, .317, .304 before this year(.361 this year). League average is about .344. 18 points of wOBA is about equal to a win over a year so Pierre is more than a win worse than average as a hitter and wOBA includes SB. I think we couldn't find a hitter close to league average with league average defense much cheaper than Pierre.
  23. Have Haudricourt or McCalvy asked Macha why Kendall is leading off? It isn't like Kendal is only slightly worse than the next hitter. He is no question our worst hitting starter. I could see a reasonable arguement for anybody else hitting lead off actually(Counsell against RHP only). I admit I have never been really happy with the Macha signing, but I really didn't expect much either. I thought he would be just another manager and so far we traded good lineup/bench management for good pitcher management. I don't want Macha fired or anything like that because the next guy is likely to do something else dumb also so I doubt it would make much difference.
  24. One interesting note is that Gamel actually has a better SLG and OPS than Counsell and an OBP only 4 points lower. Off of the top of my head a optimized Brewers lineup would probably look like Gamel Fielder Hardy Braun Cameron McGehee Hart Pitcher Kendall I really like to split up lefties and probably wouldn't bat Gamel and Fielder back to back. Of course this would all change wildly depending on how any given person would evaluate the players. My opinion is that the hitters in order from best to worst are Fielder, Braun, Gamel, Cameron, Hardy, McGehee, Hart and then Kendall. I think Hart and McGehee are really hard to peg down on where they really lie in regards to their hitting talent. McGehee has put up better numbers this year by far than in any of his minor league seasons. That is with playing the better part of the last 3 years in AAA. Hart has one really good year, one really bad year and then the year. Edit: I think I should also add that a traditional lineup is pretty close to optimal and almost as good. There are only a few things that can really ruin a lineup. One of them, and probably most important, is not playing your best players. The other is batting your worst hitter high in the order. I think it might actually be better to bat a pitcher leadoff since they are usually out of the game after 2-3 AB.(Not my idea really. Read it over at Tango's website. Kind of makes sense though) Then you can gain the platoon advantage in that spot.
  25. Probably because it really doesn't matter much. I doubt Rivera would make our pitching staff any better. Of course he wouldn't make it any worse either.
