  1. I think we have to keep in mind that Nelson is likely to be facing mostly RHP as a bench player. This should allow him to do a little better than his projections.
  2. Where about in Brownsville? I used to drive through Waupun and Brownsville to get to Milwaukee. Edit: Is $1.59/lb the normal price for their brats or a sale price?
  3. His shoulder was bothering him early last season as well.
  4. New Glarus is locally owned, operated and only distributes in Wisconsin. Not going to get much more local than that.
  5. The report says that as a sophomore in high school, he went from barely being able to bench press 100 pounds to benching over 300 in just 6 months. I'm not that in the know when it comes to weightlifting, but it seems extremely unlikely that a 16-year old could improve that much in that timeframe -- he tripled his max. Depends on how much he weighs and whether he had ever lifted before. Adding 200 lbs to your bench press over 6 months is quite a bit though. Lets say he weighed 150 and went to 175 over that time. Benching 100 lbs for a 150 lb guy is pretty bad, but it would be real easy to improve to close to 200 lbs with regular weight lifting and no supplements in only a couple months if you had never lifted before. At the time A-Rod was in high school there were many over the counter supplements that would now be considered illegal steroids at GNC. Could be similar to the Turnbow situation where he used something that wasn't illegal at the time, but is now considered a steroid.
  6. Who is this equivilent talent your replacing others with? Equivalent probably wasn't completely accurate. We have prospects who are probably close to the talent of all of our MLB players who will be ready in the next 3 years except for Prince and Braun. Weeks could regress to his career norms That would be an improvement on offense if he did. He is slugging, but his OBP sucks. He has had better years.
  7. Prince will have fewer value wins than everybody but the catcher this year. The is a little over dramatic at this point in the season don't you think?
  8. As a mid market team, we can't pay players what their worth, as that worth includes what the Yankees and Red Sox pay players. Our players need to be bargains, and Fielder will be the 2nd worst dollars per production players in our lineup next year, besides the catchers, and that could become debatable. We are still going to be paying him less than he is worth in each year unless he really falls off. Even looking at his last year where we owe him approx. $10.5M we are still getting at less than market value. He has had values of $20.2M and $11.7M the last 2 years. I think it is safe to say he lies somewhere in between those values on a per year basis. He is no longer going to be good dollars per production guy compared to other players because of the simple fact that he is further into arbitration than many other players and has had a couple big seasons. His contract is still reasonable for this year and next year. He may not be a bargain, but we are not going to easily replace his production. He is not breaking the bank as of right now and probably will not until he hits free agency. It is easier to replace other guys with cheaper, equivalent talent than Prince.
  9. I have not run across anything interesting myself. I would try the 3 "new to us" beers from New Belgium if you haven't yet. 1554, Fat Tire and Mothership Wit are the 3 rumored to be available now.
  10. MLB players would never cheat. They are all clean. Let's move on.
  11. Fielder was worth $11.7M last year according to Fangraphs. I really doubt he is worth less than the $18.5M he will be paid over the next 2 years.
  12. Lesson: Small samples are still samples of useful data. I think most would agree the data is useful, but many times the data is given to much weight over a larger sample such as a player's career stats or 3-year stats.
  13. Already have a Wii and the games are somewhat underwhelming. Of course I have owned Metroid Prime 3 for a couple years and have yet to play it. I was saving it until my 360 broke again. I am not trying to come down too hard on the 360, its just that everyone I know who has it complains about it all the time. The only complaint I have ever seen for the 360, and it's a big one, it it's failure rate. I have yet to pay anything to get it fixed though. Just lost time. I think the library is great. Blue Dragon and Mass Effect are a couple RPGs I love that are only available on 360. I think it is a common misconception that the 360 only has 1st person shooters. It has 2 very good 360 exclusive shooters(Halo, Gears of War) but to say it is a shooter only console is just plain wrong. I really don't have anything against the PS3 either. I would highly recommend it to anybody who is going to play mostly sports games. Most sports games are multiplatform and they have the best baseball game. I just like Halo, Gears of War and Mass Effect(better than the other 2 actually) and those happen to be on 360.
  14. Wow. Still think it was the wrong call to let Yo hit, but nice PA for Yo.
  15. All the games I want to play are either Xbox or multiplatform. The multiplatrform games like GTA and Fallout have exclusive DLC(for now) on Xbox. Besides, I have heard of PS3s going down as well. Not to the extent of the 360. MLB the Show is the only thing I can't get on Xbox. I would suggest a PS3 to people who are going to play mostly sports games though. Blu ray has absolutely zero appeal to me. I don't have a HDTV. Even if I did, Blu Ray isn't the big step over DVD that DVD was over VHS. DVD offered many new features like no rewinding, several languages, subtitles, and didn't deteriorate over time like VHS. Besides, it is likely to be quickly replaced by digital distribution.
  16. You are probably right. We have had enough off days and it is early so we have not had to give guys days off. I think we will see more days off and more games for the bench players pretty soon.
  17. OBP is easy to ignore since it is almost never brought up in most media. BA, HR, and RBI are constantly brought up and Weeks is doing much better in all those areas this year. Overall I think he might be a better hitter to this point this year than he was at the same point last year. Of course he was pretty bad in the first month of the season last year. March/April 2008 - .208/.333/.356/.690 2009 - .260/.313/.455/.768 Pretty close actually. I would probably take the 2009 line over the 2008 line to this point. He could easily bring up he OBP with a good game. He needs to be up around a .350+ and preferably .360+ OBP for me to be happy with his line.
  18. And if you check out Nelson's minor league splits, he really can't hit lefties at all - .508 OPS against in 2006, .623 OPS against in 2007, and .686 OPS against in 2008. If he was an every day player this might be a problem. Being a bench player means he will probably be put in favorable hitting situations much like a platooned player. He will give Hart or Braun days off against righties or come in to pinch hit against RHP. He should almost never see LHP.
  19. Cain is only expected out 4-6 weeks. Link
  20. Well I called back and they are going to fix it for free. They are only going to give me a 90-day warranty on the one they send instead of a 1 year warranty. I have the option to buy a 1-year extended warranty for about $30 or a 2-year for $60 within those 90 days. Much better than $120.
  21. Kindle 2 does not have pictures. It has a G3 connection to download books and newspapers. My wife has the Kindle 1 and likes it quite a bit.
  22. I would guess that much of the trend towards younger guys has more to do with cost than defense. I think the defense is just a pleasant benefit. The athletic thing I think has to do with less risk being associated with athletic players. GM's are not as willing to give out big money to bat only or unathletic players. Or older players thought to be at their peak who will decline after the first few years of their contract. I will say that I think the steroid era is over. However, players will always be one step ahead of testers and the players have already moved on to HGH and likely some other stuff we have not yet heard of.
  23. Perez was proposed as an option this offseason. Link He was a Type A so the Mets were his only real option as I doubt anybody else would have given up the pick to sign him.
