  1. I am not getting another baseball game for 360 untill EA can make MLB games again. My main gripe with the 2K series was the season/franchise stuff. I don't like that you have to work within a set budget without the option of turning it on or off. I also don't like dealing with anything other than players/rosters during seasons. Having to adjust ticket prices and all the other stuff was just annoying. If you don't, you don't make money and can't sign players. If the new 2k makes this stuff optional then I might buy it. I just want to play games without having to worry about all the extra crap.
  2. "Mine are tswisted."
  3. Weeks had an OBP of .373 last year. He obviously didn't match Phillips BA, but that's 42 points of OBP. Add to that the fact that Weeks is likley to increase his SLG and he should have a much higher OPS next year.
  4. If by "naturally great" you mean raw I agree. I am not sold that Hall is going to be an even average infielder, but he will still be better than Braun. I see his cannon arm as a liability. I would compare him to Favre as a player. Makes some great plays, but tries to make plays that he can't and shouldn't try to make.

  7. I don't see the pen as the problem really. You are mostly giving extra work to your long man who in general is hardly ever used. Unless our starters would go through a year like last year we would be ok. Add to that the fact that we are doing it on days with the starters who are least likley to give a good outing and it might help the pen a little.
  8. Meh, I guess this board is okay. I am not addicted to it or anything. Not that I would admit anyway.

  12. Outside of BA Weeks had pretty good offensive output.
  13. You gain .42 for the games you use this strategy I believe. I think the difference between the AL and NL ERA is about .5 so .42 per game doesn't seem to far off really.
  14. Why should agents look out for their clients? Bottom line is that they will make more money if they don't.
  15. The problem I see is having starters who don't take a innings to get into the groove. I don't see the innings as much of a problem, especially in our case where we have 4-5 starters of about equal quality after out top 3 starters. There isn't a huge drop off after our 5th starter to our 6th or even 7th starter. The other problem I see is that you are going to burn through your entire bench every time through the order you do this. "The Book" says that there is a .42 run per game gain by never letting your pitcher hit. I guess the logic behingd it is that when you have below average pitchers pitching the gain in runs will more than offset the below average pitching.
  16. I was going to disagree with this at first as the draft in any sport is a crapshoot. I think something like 50% of first round picks in the NFL draft never turn out. Of course when we are talking about the MLB draft we are looking at a large pool of players playing against varying degrees of talent. At least in the NBA, NFL and to some extent the NHL(hockey club teams) they have all played at a level beyond high school and the worst players are already taken out. We are also talking about 18 year olds who have not yet reached their full maturity physically. We talk about a player's peak being at 28 years old so basically the MLB is trying to project what a kid is going to be like a decade in advance. The advantage that the MLB does have is the minor league system. It allows you to have bad drafts where you may miss on 75% of your picks and still put together a pretty solid team through the draft. Basically you have to have quite a few years where you draft absolutely nobody to completely deplete your minor league system. Teams can keep control of their players for a minimum of 12 1/2 years if they want to.
  17. Just to try fanning the flames a bit with regards to lineup discussion, The Book's last way to optimize a lineup involves your starting rotation. They say that a below average starter should never hit. It says you should have a rotation of #1 starter #2 starter #4 starter/#5starter/ Long reliever #3 starter #5 starter/#4 starter/ Long reliever where on the 3rd and 5th days you should have your pitcher pinch hit for at every at bat. While I agree with the theory behind this I am not sure how well this would work in practice. Maybe you could do it in September after callups.
  18. If I was a pitcher I would look at a long term deal more seriously than if I was a position player. Pitchers seem to have more career ending or career damaging injuries than position players do. I think in Fielder's case the odds are that he doesn't get hurt badly in the next 4 years. Nothing bad enough to effect a future contract. Yes, I did knock on wood. From the team's point of view I don't see any reason to give out any contracts longer than 4 years plus option years. I also don't see any reason to give out a long contract that doesn't buy out free agent years. You may save a few million, but a few million is just a small drop in the bucket compared to a team's total salary.
  19. Very funny considering you have a barrel man logo for an avatar. I will be laughing about that for a few days.
  20. What did Cabrera get that gave the Phillies the idea that $7M would be a fair offer?
  21. I was going to say that Munson has the most experience catching at the MLB level, but he has played more games at 1B and 3B in the majors than at catcher.
  22. That still doesn't address the original issue of being underpaid this year. Maybe $40M isn't as lowball as I originally thought, but I see no point in giving out a contract worth approx wht Fielder will get in arbitration anyway. The only reason to give out a multiyear contract is to buy out free agent years or save some money. $2.6M isn't enough of a savings to make a multi year deal worthwhile. I still think we can get Fielder for around $9M next year. Keep in mind that the Phillies offered Howard $7M and the arbitrator has to pick one or the other.
  23. $10M for one year isn't a lowball offer, but $40M for 4 years would be. Howard is more than likley to get more than $10M next year so a contract at an average of "only" $10M a year would be a lowball offer.
