  1. I agree it is odd because it probably doesn't really help to much but I don't tink it hurts very much either. In this case it's just money and I don't think we will look at the contract in a couple years and wish we had the money to sign somebody else. Even with Garza we are probably only 7 decent MLB starting pitchers deep. I am just sort of meh on the deal. We are putting a lot on old guys staying healthy and young guys repeating career years if we expect to compete in the next couple years. I hope we will eventually flip Lohse and Garza at some point for young talented players but more likely we will hold onto them until they decline beyond usefulness or until the last half year of their contract.
  2. It is more than just one year. We are not a contender this year either. Maybe possibly next year an by then Lohse at his age could be well into decline. At no point in the deal can I look at it and think we are serious playoff contenders.
  3. I hated the Lohse signing because it was giving up the future for the present and the present was expected to be much more than mediocre.
  4. We were not a playoff team last year with or without Lohse. Even without the injuries and with Lohse we were a low 80's win team. There is no way all those injuries and missed time add up to 16 wins.
  5. .234/.357/.414 That batting line for a 2B is really good. Some people just get to hung up on batting average.
  6. There is no pitching surplus. Most teams use at least 7 starters every year because of injuries and poor starts.
  7. I think we usually hear about deals before the medical exam. I know what McCalvy has reported but that doesn't mean he was told the truth.
  8. Thornburg could possibly have outpitched Garza or not much worse than Garza. Better, sure, a lot better, maybe. More depends on the guys we already had. I think the move increases the floor for the team more than the ceiling, which isn't a bad thing. You can't just ignore how bad the rotation was for the first half of the year or how bad Segura and Gomez were in the second half. A rotation of Gallardo (look at the 2nd half production), Lohse, Garza, Peralta, and Estrada is possibly very formidable. That same rotation last year was not good. This move boots Thornburg(who was our best starter by ERA, I doubt he would repeat that) further down but also some really bad performances. Good move that will probably help attendance but we still need a lot to go right to make the playoffs. I hope we do make the playoffs becasue if we don't I think this move will keep us hovering in middling ground as a franchise.
  9. I don't think this move vaults us into contention or makes us a lot better. It gives us more depth, which is good, but I think it only moves us by a couple wins. It gives more certainty to expected production compared to a guy like Thornburg. I still think we have to hope Peralta learns some control. He is our best hope for an ace. In fact if I had to pick one player who our whole season could turn on it would be Peralta. I know this will sound weird but I don't think money is really an issue for the Brewers for the next few years. Obviously we can't go out and compete for the big free agents but our salary obligations are manageable. I think we still lack a good sized bubble of talent at any level in the organization.
  10. Kotsay could play CF like Yuni could play SS. Sure they could be there but they really shouldn't. And we were lucky enough to see both of them play there in game 3 of the NLCS. Lucky is a word. Not the word I would use.
  11. This is kind of a weird move. I guess pitching depth doesn't hurt. I personally would have rather gone with Thornburg or some other young guy to see what they can do. Not sure what to think yet.
  12. Kotsay could play CF like Yuni could play SS. Sure they could be there but they really shouldn't.
  13. They may be guaranteed since they agreed to terms before arbitration. I doubt it. What incentive would Melvin have to guarantee it if he didn't have to in the arbitration process? The fact that he's opened up the competition even more, speaks to Francisco not having a fully guaranteed contract. Francisco on the other hand assured himself a higher number than the Brewers would come in with. They never went to arbitration so there is a good chance the contract, like most MLB contracts, is guaranteed. I am not 100% sure but I don't think we can or should assume that the contract is not guaranteed. Unless the contract is mostly in performance bonuses we should probably assume it is guaranteed.
  14. Yes but Yuni? Don't forget Gonzalez. Honestly I did forget Gonzalez but they at least had the good sense to let him go.
  15. Yes but Yuni?
  16. Only partly if its a typical arbitration type contract. If he's cut before the season he only gets a prorated amount. They may be guaranteed since they agreed to terms before arbitration.
  17. I don't think it will happen but, if the pitching comes through the Brewers will be a pretty good team. Probably still not contenders but definitely an above average team. The team wasn't as bad as they ended up last year. I would love to see some talent traded for younger talent, however there is a very good chance the brewers are being lowballed on trade offers. I really don't have a huge problem with the offseason so far. Last offseason was pretty much the same until they signed Lohse and Yuni in the same week.
  18. Helps a lot with other players swinging and missing. He was never really in the zone much.
  19. Why isn't Gomez bolded? That is what I was thinking. Gomez doesn't even need to hit as well as he did last year to have a lot of trade value. He just needs to hit a little better than he has for most of his career to be a very very valuable CF. I don't really care if it makes a hole in our lineup to trade him. I just want the prospects he would bring back in trade. I don't think he will be around long enough to help when we have a good sized bubble of talent at the MLB level.
  20. How does HGH work with muscle injuries. It just says "tendon-bone interface injuries."
  21. WAR is just a starting point. Without knowing the playing time and wOBA I wouldn't even bother picking either. I also wouldn't even look at BR WAR. I don't like the defensive stat they use for WAR.
  22. Melvin did state that he shuold have brought Morris up last September.
  23. I would have rather stuck with Halton as the right handed half of the platoon. Depends on the money I guess but this is the small half of the platoon.
  24. My problem is how uneven and apparently self-serving their pursuit of Braun and A-Rod was. Are they going to these same lengths to catch others? It doesn't seem like they are. I have a very hard time believing they couldn't hire investigators to find more clinics. I really don't believe they can clean up the game completely but I don't like feeling like the whole Biogenesis situation was just a witch hunt. The cheaters will always be ahead of the testers.
