  1. Seems a little expensive for Hughes. Looks like he made some dramatic changes in his pitch selection last year. Either that or his curveball is flattening out. Both look like bad but not horrible deals. At least Hughes is under 30 and neither cost a pick.
  2. Why look at projections? He hasn't really done anything to make people think he can hit well outside of a couple months in 2013. In fact he has been worse every time he was moved up until a fw good months in 2013. Sub .700 OPS in the minors in 2013. A .714 OPS in 2012. A .740 OPS in 2011 at A+ ball. His biggest HR year was this year with 11 combined majors and minors. Hopefully he fills out a bit and develops some power but as of right now, he is a weak hitter.
  3. How useful is that to most people in their daily lives?
  4. They could bring in somebody they intend to flip at the deadline provided Maldonado has options. Like K-Rod last year.
  5. Maldanodo is already on the roster and you can't get much cheaper than he is. No reason to dump resources into a position that is already covered.
  6. Why bring in anybody to finish in 4th place again this year?
  7. For all we know Aoki could be like Morgan was for us in 2012. I don't think he will be but at this point Aoki is redundant and probably not even our best option for an OF spot after Gomez and Braun. May not even be the second best option. If he plays I think it will be to increase his value not because he is the best option. If he doesn't lay all we are doing is hurting his trade value.
  8. About 6 and that is probably being a little generous. He was only at 7-7.5 in his MVP years and I wouldn't expect that every year. So he maybe comes up with 4 extra wins if he plays the full season healthy and given his injury history that isn't a given. I know he hasn't missed games but he seems to have at least one nagging injury every year. Ramirez is probably a 4ish win a year player. That is assuming no drop off in production or missed time for injuries. That is about 2 extra wins. Our 1B position was about -2 WAR this year. Hart I am going to go with 3 WAR and that is probably being generous considering position and defense. He could be down as far as 1 WAR. Rounding everything up and adding that only comes to 11 wins on the high side. Probably closer to 8. That is assuming good health and all three players maintaining production which is by no means given considering injury history and age for all 3.
  9. Where do you get 10-15 wins? Please break it down. I think you are overvaluing the contributions of any one player.
  10. They played over their talent in 2012. We also lost Greinke and Marcum without getting any decent replacements. There was no reason to expect the 2013 team to be much better than an 81 win team even with Lohse. That is why the signing and what we had to give up was just a bad move. At best all the things being brought up add 10 wins. That only puts us at 84 wins. Then you have to take out some regression of Gomez, Davis, and Segura. Davis almost replaced the loss of Braun so it isn't like not having Braun hurt us much. Actually Davis out hit Braun this year and had almost as much WAR in 10 fewer games. Dramatically different, sure but still not a playoff team. Managing a baseball team and hoping everything goes right for you is like wishing on rainbows.
  11. If you are only looking at performance you are completely missing the point of why people think it was a bad signing. It was a bad signing because of what we gave up and the talent on the team.
  12. Worse is a relative term. They were the second best hitting team in the NL last year measured by wOBA. 0.002 points behind the best hitting team. Sure they were lucky but even with normal clutch stats there were one of the best hitting teams in the NL.
  13. Kinsler and Costellanos bring better defense than Weeks and Ramirez. That probably more than offsets and possible difference in offense.
  14. Looking over the last few years, taking age and body type into consideration it is hard to know what to expect from Fielder. He may have already started to decline. I guess what I am saying is I think this trade is riskier for Texas than it is for Detroit.
  15. I would trade Braun and some money, but only for good young players. Several young players. More than we got in return for Greinke.
  16. They definitely would lose fans that would never come back. Those fans would stay away like they have the last decade when the team got better.
  17. We don't need to blow it up. We do need to get in the mindset that if a player isn't under control in 2016 they should definitely be on the trading block. Holding on to Gomez makes zero sense to me. He is probably the best trading chip we have to make a quick turnaround. I can see a good argument being made to hold onto Braun, Lucroy and Segura. Beyond that, everybody else is likely to be gone by the time we can acquire impact talent. Mind you all trades based on fair return.
  18. He's a trader. Link What a moran.
  19. He's a trader. What a moran.
  20. I don't want Fielder back for the next 7 years even at $128m. That is still close to $18m per year for a player whose best years may be in the rear view mirror. We need to get younger not older. This would be just another short term fix that would hurt us in the long run.
  21. The huge hole in his argument I see is he keeps referring back to 51% of 1st/2nd round picks make the majors. We are talking about prospects not picks. Prospects are a not as much of an unknown as picks. Getting a couple of highly ranked prospects is not the same as getting a couple first round picks especially if they are AA or higher. I think he is undervaluing the return on trading a player. Just because an offer can be matched by another team does not mean it will be matched. Just look at trading Greinke away last year.
  22. It's in the answers to questions like that where Melvin has shown he's sometimes quite good at pulling a rabbit out of his hat. This year, we'd know a live bunny rabbit would have a decent chance of out-hitting last year's fill-in 1B's. I don't believe Ike Davis did last year though. I'm pretty sure a platoon of Francisco and Halton could do better than .205/.326/.334. Listening to the Mets telecast team in the last series of the year, they were pretty down on Davis and with numbers like that, it's easy to understand why. The telecast teams thought Yuni was a good defender. I don't care what the telecast teams for any team think.
  23. The Cards had the 10th best team wOBA in MLB. 2nd best in the NL. Lucky or not, they were a better offensive team than most NL teams. I would expect their runs to go down but not a lot. The Pirates are the team I would expect to come back to the pack a bit. Middle of the pack offense with good pitching. Both are still better than the Brewers on paper.
  24. Bring Darth Maul back to life so Jar Jar can kill him in Episode IV. The Emperor was brought back to life as well in the expanded universe.
  25. With the number of games he has played the MLB defensive metrics have no useful predictive value. A scouting report would probably be more useful. Several would be better.
