  1. Per Cot's 5 years/$11M (2012-16), plus 2017 club option signed extension with Milwaukee 3/26/12, replacing 1 year deal signed 3/12 $0.5M signing bonus 12:$0.5M, 13:$0.75M, 14:$2M, 15:$3M, 16:$4M, 17:$5.25M club option ($0.25M buyout) if Lucroy qualifies as a Super 2 after 2012 season, salaries increase to $1.9M in 2013, $2.3M in 2014, $3.3M, $4.25M in 2015 limited no-trade protection
  2. Ramirez' contract is whatever we think we can trade. We can always pick up part of the contract to make it more palatable to the trading team. I still don't like his contract.
  3. I agree with this. Wouldn't you be making the opponent account for more by being more flexible with your strategy? If the defense is playing back, you lay down a sac bunt. If they are playing up, swing away. By playing off the defense I would think you are giving yourself the best chance to succeed. I don't think it is good to keep bunting when everybody in the park knows it is coming. Of course there are always exceptions. By sticking with one strategy you are not making the defense account for as much.
  4. St. Louis is in the playoffs if the season ended today, LA isn't. LA would have to outplay St. Louis the rest of the way to get in. At least that would be my simple explanation.
  5. Yup that's what I meant. You end up in a worse base/out state when you fail at a contact play than if you just get an out at 1B. I forgot to take into consideration that you would probably give up the out anyway. Still you would need it to work more than just occasionally for it to be worth it. The contact play seems to be such a bad idea because it hardly ever works and you usually end up in a worse base out state. The contact play and a lot of other small ball strategy along with avoiding strikeouts seems to be High School and lower level strategy where the fielders are not quite as good and are much more prone to mistakes. The fielders, even the bad ones, are so much better that you need to do more than just put the ball in play.
  6. The difference between one out and no outs is about a run going from one situation to another. So theoretically you cost yourself about a run every time it doesn't work. Of course a lot of things can happen. You have to play for what is probable not what is possible.
  7. I don't see people saying high leverage situations are not important. Usually the talk about relievers in general is 1) the 9th may not be the highest leverage situation so it is suboptimal to save your best guy for the 9th or 2) relievers in general are so up and down year to year it is tough to predict what they will do and therefore paying a lot of money to relievers probably isn't the best use of money. Our bullpen last year was fantastic, especially after we picked up K-Rod so we probably won more games than our talent dictated. What we are seeing this year is the complete opposite where our bullpen has underperformed and we are playing below our talent. Practically the same bullpen, especially at the back end, vastly different results. I think if Axford and K-Rod perform like they did last year, we have a much better record.
  8. I would like to see Peralta as one of the top 5 guys. Considering everything he has done in the minors and his stuff, I think he just had a bad first couple months this year. I definitely don't want to see him in the pen.
  9. My opinion didn't change either. That is why I stayed mostly out of this thread.
  10. Not unlike Mike Cameron except that whole OBP thing.
  11. If people thought the offense would be down without Fielder, I think most would have agreed that it would be made up for or more than made up for in better infield defense.
  12. There were at least a few posters on this board who thought our offense would be about equal to last year. We got so little out of 3B and SS last year that our offense improving this year isn't much of a surprise.
  13. So what's the verdict on Weeks? Just a 2 month slump?
  14. I thought that was just the Cards that thought that crap.
  15. What is the problem with Harper?
  16. I would agree with that but I think Aoki may offset most of the offense with better defense, maybe. I personally think that Gamel would be good in RF. He is athletic and seems to have good defensive instincts unlike Braun. I only bring up Braun because Gamel has been compared to Braun at 3B. Personally I would go with Gamel in RF and a platoon of Gomez and Aoki in CF next year. I think that they will go with Gamel as a bench player unless he hits really well off the bench.
  17. Maybe you should go back and read the thread. You would see most people don't see 2013 lost season as much as a season where our chances are not good to make the playoffs. That is what I hope they do also. Young cost controlled guy who could be expected to math what we would have expected out of Izturis. I don't want them signing Gonzalez as a backup. I hope they go with Segura. I was opposed to bringing him up before next June but now that they have, they might as well just hand him the starting SS job for the next couple years. We need some cost savings somewhere. Gamel, Shafer and Bianchi as backups would be a good place to start. bring back Marcum on a one year contract and hope the young guys work out. I still would not be opposed to trading Hart if you get a good return.
  18. I took it to mean that they were worried about his innings when they said they were monitoring his innings but I could be mistaken. I agree at 29 I wouldn't be worried about his innings anymore. I wouldn't worry about innings as much with a guy going from the pen to the rotation like I would be with a starter increasing innings. Pitching out of the pen puts more stress on a pitcher's arm than I would think starting would. At least if you were used quite a bit.
  19. Funny, I was under the impression Fiers and Estrada of that group would be shut down before the end of the season as will Rogers and a few other young guys. Yeah, ya got me on that one with Fiers. Thought about that this morning. However, I haven't heard anything about Estrada being shut down. Rogers has already been shut down. This is what I found on a quick search of Estrada. Granted that isn't 100% and we really don't know how far they will let him go but I would think it is a strong indication he wouldn't e available for the playoffs if they were talking about shutting him down before the end of the season. There was talk of a 6 man rotation. I think that would hurt our chances though. So if we did make the playoffs I think our pitching would not be as good as it is now and we wouldn't be near as good.

  21. I think at this point winning isn't going to impact attendance much this year. The damage is already done on this year's attendance. If they are good next year, what happens between now and the end of the season will not have a huge impact on attendance. If they win next year, the attendance will pick up. The payroll was going to drop next year regardless. Because of the market size our team relies on the draft and will continue to rely on the draft. Wanting a better draft pick is wanting our team to be better in the future. Again, who would be pitching for us even if we did make the playoffs? I don't see how making the game with a 50% chance of making the real playoffs would be good for us at all. I don't think the small boost in attendance this year and next would offset the better draft pick. Even with an apparently poor draft. If there is anything we have learned about our owner it's that he will spend over budget, within reason, if he thinks it will helps us win more. He is willing to bet on attendance being good if there is a good product on the field so small changes in attendance shouldn't effect spending.
  22. I am actually not all that happy with all the winning. I hurts our draft spot and even if we do make the playoffs, who do we have to pitch for us?
  23. Gonzalez had an option that would vest based on PA. He did not reach the minimum PA so he should be a FA next year.
  24. To be fair, I wouldn't call the Brewers fan base very loyal either. They didn't have much of a fan base until the last few years when they became successful. I think Mariucci is just ok. Then again I hate the Gophers.
