  1. My vote goes to Berkman. I don't believe the record of the team a player is playing for should have any bearing. Should Berkmamn be punished because the Stros are not a very good team? Of course not. It certainly is not his fault. But the problem is that he will be punished and that to me is not right.
  2. I guess I just don't see JJ accepting a move to second. In fact the suggestion might preclude him from signing long term. How would you feel as an established major league SS if asked to move for some kid at AA? I would prefer to keep him in Milwaukee and deal Escobar if thats the case. I'm not ready to pin the teams future on a AA shortstop with little power when we have an established ML shortstop who has legitimate 20 HR power even if he tends to be a little streaky. Especially when Hardy's defense hasn't really hurt us all that much. The gain we make defensively would be lost at the plate. I would like to see an offer made to JJ this winter to lock him up long term
  3. I don't see why so many people want to take the team's best defensive infielder (Hardy) and move him to a weaker defensive position. Right now he is the only regular infielder who is actally a good defensive ballplayer, IMO. If you want to bring up Escobar then move him to 2nd. I'm fine with that. But leave JJ alone. Otherwise you weaken the hardest defensive position on the infield which makes no sense to me. Don't know much about Escobar's defense but doubt he is better than JJ.
  4. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe you can waive a player twice during a season and pull him off if he is claimed. If you put him on a third time and he is claimed you lose him for a ridiculously low waiver price to the team that claimed him. It seemns to me that Harry Dalton screwed up late in his career in Milwaukee and lost a decent player (it may have been a minor leaguer) to waivers and that is part of the reason we wound up with Bando.
  5. There is absolutely no way Counsell should be starting when you have another LH option on the bench. He got some hits in Atlanta so Yost probably decided to "go with the hot hand" as he likes to say. That doesn't make it right. Especially the way the offense has struggled as of late. I definitely agree with danzig about the batting order. Because not only is he starting but he's batting sixth because Ned can't move people around. I would much rather see Cameron hit sixth if Counsell is starting. What in God's name is Ned thinking?
  6. I think the Brewers get all flop-sweaty and fail in critical games because the sense of urgency is not instilled in them, and I'm afraid the motivation thing is on Ned. Of course, all games count as 1 out of 162, and you can't get too high or too low. But what makes you think the Brewers failed because these were "critical games"? There were periods back in May when they played just as poorly in "non critical games". Maybe they played poorly because they played poorly. It doesn't necessarily mean they choked. Or that Ned didn't have them motivated. Maybe they just slumped at the wrong time. Nobody really knows for certain why they played so poorly.
  7. I just think some people on this board need to start keeping things in perspective. Baseball is not football. Its not about rah rah and pep rallies and "Lets kill this opponent". Baseball does not lend itself well to that type of atmosphere. Football is a sprint. Baseball is a marathon. Too many people on this board have a football mentality about a baseball season. In football one bad game can cost you a season. Thats not true in baseball. One bad game (or series) does not a season break. 162 games is a long season. Even the best teams are going to have down times and the worst teams are probably all gonna win 5 in a row at some point. If the Pirates put together a 5 game winning streak are their fans going to start thinking pennant? Of course not. So why should we start thinking our season is over? The worst the Brewers have done is pick a bad time to have a down stretch. Was it because they choked under pressure? Was it because the Cubs played really well? Who knows. Jim Powell said it well on the pregame yesterday. A season is a series of peaks and valleys. The Brewers are in a valley right now. The Cubs are on a peak. Were only 2/3 of the way through this season. There's a lot of ball left to be played. There is no evidence to suggest that they can't turn this around. People are upset right now and rightfully so. But it's no time to start writing obituaries.
  8. I called DirecTv and was told (after an hour on the phone) to try Ch 739 and found the gamne there on the MLB TV channel. Getting nothing on 642 or 699.
  9. Oh how I long to be young and stupid again.
  10. Noone is saying that Soup doesn't deserve some blame for what happened but it was certainly not his fault that he was still on the mound to face Blum. Pitchers are not usually allowed to remove themselves from a ballgame. When even Bill "I love Ned" Schroeder is criticizing him you know he messed up big time. There's just no explanation that makes sense for why he was left in.
  11. No, Yost shouldn't have pulled him because the guy had hit well against him. He should of pulled him because he was very tired. He had been laboring for a while and clearly getting his pitches in the fat part of the zone. That coupled with the fact the guy had killed Suppan in those 24 at bats and had taken him deep in the 2nd were more than enough clues to make the move. Why keep him in? To save the bullpen for the Cubs? There is no logical reason to leave him in at that point. Ned screwed up. Simple as that. (fixed code --1992)
  12. I don't have a problem with the announcers mentioning a no hitter. To me the superstition only applies to the people on the field and in the dugout. I don't mind Bill or Brian. I certainly like Brian more than Daron who annoyed the hell out of me. He was a little over the top. The one thing that bothers me about Bill is when he goes into his "back in the day" stories. That gets a little old. I sometimes feel as if he does it to build credibility. As if to say " I played MLB so I am qualified to do this job". Bill also repeats himself but how easy is it to come up with a new way to say things when they happen hundreds of times during a season. Overall they do a pretty good job.
  13. I believe it was Casey Stengel who said " You gotta dance with the one which brung ya" . Don't bring Yo back until 09. Why risk it? If were in a position where were in the playoffs then we don't need him. We will need him more next year with Sheets leaving.
  14. Personally I don't think there is any tool that can accurately tell you how Durham will do the next 2 months. Maybe he gets cold and hits .200 maybe he gets hot and hits .400 or maybe he gets hurt tonight and is out for the season. Who knows. Those projections are just interesting to the extent that you can compare what they say now to what it looks like at the end of the season. For me anyway they have no meaning beyond that. I certainly don't feel that they're telling me anything right now. They're just a fun toy to me. Some of you are taking it way too seriously.
  15. I think it definitely helps to get another LH bat in the lineup. However Durham's lack of range at a vital defensive position needs to be taken into account when doling out playing time. I think it will be interesting to see how this works. Will they go with a strict L/R platton or will they use them depending on the situation? Will this move Weeks to try harder to live up to his potential? Will the veteran Durham have a positive influence in the clubhouse? This is a move that can certainly help this team if it plays out right and I don't really see the downside. Good move.
  16. I agree. I can't believe Doug feels comfortable with his current bullpen setup. But if they make a move for another arm then Mota has got to be DFA'd otherwise it's not going to help that much.
  17. In my opinion the deals not done until it appears on a MLB.com site (Brewers or Giants site)
  18. I don't think Cain is going anywhere unless DM sweetens the pot considerably.
  19. If I'm a Cub fan my palms are starting to get a little sweaty. They still have to play 7 games in Milwaukee and that is no easy task. Hell, they could conceivably be in 3rd place by Aug 1. Eight of their next 12 games are on the road including 4 at Miller Park to end the month. Their four home games are against the Marlins who have won 7 of their last ten. That series is sandwiched between a four game trip to Arizona and the 4 game stay in Milwaukee. There seems to have been an assumption from most baseball fans all year that the Cubs would win the NL East. I don't think the Cubs are guaranteed anything at this point. I'm not saying the Crew is guaranteed anything either but if I'm a Cub fan I'm real nervous right now and my cockiness is starting to fade. This could be a better race than 07.
  20. I just don't see Rickie being involved here. I can't see what bait the Giants would have to lure him into the deal. I certainly don't think Cain or Wilson will be moved at this point and I don't see Melvin giving him up cheaply. But I would gladly take Durham as a rental as long as he doesn't cost too much. We could really use another LH bat.
  21. If I am the GM of a team that has just won 21 of their last 28 games I'm not going to change a thing. Why would I? If it ain't broke don't fix it. What does his agent think an investigation is going to prove anyway? If he keeps pitching well he will eventually get the call or get traded to an organization who can use him.
  22. I don't see any reason why we need to cut everyone off at 100 pitches. Doing so is a fairly recent development. One might argue that pitchers were more likely to gwet hurt 20 years ago when 120-135 pitch outings were not uncommon but its not like pitchers are staying off the DL with these limits. If CC or Ben are pitching well I'd rather have them go the extra inning then turn to the bullpen and have to watch the end of the game with my hands over my eyes.
  23. I would love to sign either/both but there is going to be a huge bidding war particularly in light of how poorly the Yanks have done this year by their standards. I really dont see Mark A taking on the Steinbrenners in a bidding war and winning. To me it just isn't realistic to think either one will be back. It's more likely that Weeks/Hardy will be moved to help the rotation for 09.
  24. This is what bothers me most about this deal. We probably could have easily bettered this offer even after the CC deal if Melvin had talked to Beane. I just can't believe they made this happen so quickly after the CC deal. Unbelieveable. Well, hopefully Doug has another card up his sleeve.
  25. I don't really think anyone is actually "celebrating" the injury. I think they all feel the rest will do Soup some good because of the way he's performed lately. I certainly hope that things work out OK because having 6 capable starters going down tjhe stretch is cetainly better than having 5.
