  1. saw that coming....best of luck working back on to it Jeff....i guess it sucks to make it all the way to AAA with a good shot of making the majors, and then have everything fall apart
  2. did anyone get me some uecker dolls???
  3. somebody PLEEEEEEEAAAAASSSSSEEE get me some dolls...i will pay you also, enjoy watching smoltz work if you guys haven't seen him recently...or ever he's really amazing
  4. My memory of dawson was that he was crippled and that his rookie card was worth more than dale murphy's I'm voting no based on his inability to take a walk, which is a very big deal...basically, the hawk was bill hall for 20 years...hall of famer he is not... I think Dale Murphy was better at his peak than rice or dawson though...
  5. To me, the game was too different for the pre WW 2 guys, at any position, those guys tend to have higher averages, more steals, and lower power numbers. I understand this, but i think it actually helps build a case for some of the more modern guys anyway...because well, they did it against tougher competition..although the pitching ranks may have been thinned out a bit...and they weren't dying of tuberculosis or anything.. I think Ted should be helped by the era he played in..the 70's depressed runs quite a bit comparitively speaking...Ted's last full year was 1985...he lost out on a big spike in hitting production that a guy like Fisk took advantage of (87-91) I think that HELPS Ted's case...as he shouldn't be penalized because he stopped being productive right before the start of the juiced ball era... i think this argument applies for alot of the guys weve talked about so far like rice, murphy, etc...their productive days ended right at the beginning of the steroid era, so they were contemporaries, however briefly with barry bonds and the likes...though they don't fairly compare to them... I think these guys (simmons, Murphy, Rice...) are completely screwed by the fact that their best playing days occured in the late 70's and early 80's...something just causes that era to be totally ignored...
  6. It's worth saying that the two best offensive catchers in history aren't in your list---being Josh Gibson and Piazza...which probably doesn't help simmons' case... how does simmons stack against guys like Mickey Cochrane, bill freehan, gabby hartnett, and bill dickey???
  7. I think enrique should be better than hall...those are really great numbers for a middle infielder in huntsville....he's got better numbers there than: Rickie weeks jj hardy corey hart brad nelson actually everybody except, and this pains me... Peter zoccolillo Jom Rushford and his (not) brother Nelson..
  8. did you guys see this? "FAN SUPPORT: Fans wishing to voice their opinion in support of their favorite candidates may do so in two ways: by sending a single letter to Hall of Fame Veterans Committee, 25 Main Street, Cooperstown, NY 13326, or by logging on to baseballhalloffame.org and sending us an e-mail. The Hall of Fame does not forward petitions to the voting members, but makes all correspondence known to any interested voting members, as well as to the Screening Committee members and Historical Overview Committee members." Sounds like some people might want to fire off a letter Brett--ron santo patiently awaits his letter from you...
  9. The next Veterans Committee vote is in 2007, Fingers, Molitor, Sutton, Yount, Brock, Gibson, Musial and Schoendienst are all on the committee, as are Bench and Berra..........I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Ted get in. Can't the veterans committee only elect people who stayed on the ballot (min 5% of the vote) for 15 years??? If so, then they can't elect simmons, can they?
  10. Quick, Bill James worshippers, where does he rank Ted? I vote him in. i worship not the jamesian wit, but he makes a better case for his rankings than anyone else: Simmons is 11th. Right behind gabby Hartnet (HOF) and right in front of Joe Torre (not Hof, but probably will be for his managing exploits) he certainly ranks behind current catchers Piazza and rodriguez, but not Jorge posada and javy lopez...i'd say after a quick glance that he was a very good player.. and that one could make a case for him... He was a compiler, but being a compiler as a catcher is really amazing..He was primarily a catcher until 1984..so thats what, 17 season's as a catcher I'm gonna break my no vote string and vote yes
  11. Even though they sent him to fall ball last year (that happened right??) i think they view him as more of organizational fodder than a prospect...i think they start him because he's good at getting a ballers out...and sometimes it's good to have guys like that
  12. Take the bickering to Private Messages or I will lock the game thread.
  13. it's less that everyone here hates ned...most of us like him or diclike him...we just don't talk about it incessantly... I think the problem here is that the people who are negative about ned make a point to talk about it 23 hours a day.. and are being very condescending tonight..
  14. This was overdue...hopefully heether learns quickly....and braun proves he can kill the ball anywhere...
  15. Same with Raines (who incidentally, I would vote "yes" on) stolen bases aren't popular here, but tim raines has over 800...which is very impressive
  16. I'll take the one with the highest ops, lowest salary, and plays the best defense...
  17. where's that stat from, i think i could be geeky.. and dale murphy is my hero..so i'd love to see him in the hall...give him credit...he played catcher and cf...plus was absolutely dominant from 1980 to 1988...that's 9 great seasons... but how does he stack up with your stat roco?
  18. If it's jimmy wynn or ken singleton, then i vote yes... hehe...
  19. yeah, what to do with those numbers???? Maybe last year was the fluke...was he batting 8th alot last year???could he have inflated walk totals for some other reason...is he hacking earlier in counts this season???have his k's gone up??? Whatever the dif. is, all signs point to massive decline next year... maybe we can dig up devon white and play him in cf...
  20. I think Dale Murphy was a better player than Jim Rice...he make's a pretty good case though... but bill james ranks him 28th at his position...which isn't a good sign... in fact...check out albert belle's career line...they are very similar players... Jim Rice is different from sutter...Jim was a terrific player...and he did it at a time when it was hard to hit...but i think Jim Rice is right on the border... Honestly, i think i'd wouldn't vote for him...especially since i think there will be a number of corner outfielder guys in the next 10 years who will eclipse his numbers...making his case look even weaker... can we do this for tim raines??? i'm really intrigued by what people here think about him..
  21. But relating to the original question of predictability, wouldn't the drop in walks be a bad sign? Might some of the singles be attributable to luck? absolutely...if brady were slightly less lucky next year, he might slip to around .700 in ops...which would make him replacement level... i think corey hart should start in cf next year...
  22. using that logic, we should have traded carlos lee and bill hall as well, and geoff jenkins asap... if they'd traded clark in june or july, magruder would have started an additional 20 games or so since then, causing mass suicide amongst the faithful... clark should still have plenty of value after the year...
  23. Pedro: "I'm finishing this off". Grady: "You're getting up there, 115 pitches" Pedro: "I said, I'm finishing this off, I've got his one" Grady: "If you let a guy on I'm yanking ya" Pedro: "Not going to happen" Grady: "Go get 'em" Yost: He's the manager for a reason.
  24. actually, Brady's OPS isn't that much higher than it was last year it's just that this season he has chosen to hit singles instead of taking walks, which pretty much evens out his seemingly better play this year..
