  1. I'm not a football fan. I followed college football in younger days, and I enjoyed watching the Packers' playoff run this year. I even enjoyed the Super Bowl this year--it's been probably 15 years since I last watched it. Basically I think football is a stupid sport. Most coaches on any level seem to fit the profile of someone who'd belong to an underground fascist or Neo-Nazi movement. Players have strong representation in the rogue, ruffian, and rapists demographics of society. Fans seem to see the game as a metaphor for "sticking it to the man" after a hard week at work. I think the last bit is key to why it's the most popular sport in the US. Emotionally speaking, football wears it's heart on its sleeve. It's incredibly simple to watch and understand. Basically it's a controlled fight with some amazing acrobatic games of catch thrown in, peppered with fist pumping, cathartic emotion. I've had to accept the fact that for most everyone, football is fun to watch. The opportunity for something exciting to happen every play is overwhelming. As someone who didn't live in Wisconsin until I was an adult, I've learned to accept that football, specifically the Packers, will always be more important than anything else. Except for maybe killing deer.
  2. I fully expect Bush to have a similar career to Suppan. Per 9 ip he strikes out 6.3 and walks just under 2. He's going to wind up on a team that plays stellar defense one year and win 16-18 games with an ERA under 4. He'll parlay that into a 4/$40 miilion type contract, stay injury free and throw 190 innings at major league average ERA for several years. That has value. I don't think he should block a more talented, younger pitcher, but I'm not ready to give up on him just yet. Sheets will be gone next year and there's no guarantee with Capuano. They're gonna need him in 2009.
  3. Did anybody post this yet? from Yahoo! Sports:
  4. Cruel, cruel joke......I loved it! :D Let me take this opportunity to suggest Brian check out freeforums.org, especially if operating costs are an issue. I am admin of a board I started over there. It is a free organization with good support.
  5. I think if you do position by position or lineup by lineup or pitcher by pitcher comparisons the Brewers are clearly better than the Cubs. The only way I see the Brewers not completely running away with the division is if a string of horrific key injuries beset them. Even then they should be able to stay close to the Cubs. The Cubs' record after June 1 was 63-48. That's a 92 win rate over a 162 game season. I think that's the ceiling for that team; the best they can do. I think the Brewers' ceiling is 100 wins. You have to play the games; anything can happen of course, but I expect the Brewers to win the division by 8 games. Frankly, on paper I don't see a better team in the league.
  6. Murton is a good option for AL team, play a little corner OF, a little DH. A bad team could get good use of him as a regular. I was hoping the Orioles would get him as part of the Roberts trade, but that trade is officially dead.
  7. Not sure I can agree with this, no matter the definition of "borderline". (NOTE: Unless you define "borderline" as "not in any way".) That's a workable definition for me!
  8. The difference between Escobar's defense and Hardy's can't possibly make up for those 26 homers and .463 slugging. Move those numbers to 3rd and you have an average hitting 3B, and a below average offensive ss. I realize it's hard to predict Escobar's offense at this stage of his career, but there is little to suggest he's anything more than one of the Alex Gonzalez'. That's not as good as the current set up of Hall at 3B and Hardy at ss.
  9. They also employ Colin Cowherd, who is a borderline human. As I said above, I don't tune in.
  10. A friend of mine call the network YESPNESN. I will watch the actual games but otherwise I agree with everyone else's criticisms. Like almost everything else on TV, it's a network geared to idiots. Of course it wasn't always this way, but marketers got a hold of the network and realized there are more idiots in the world than smart people. So, pandering to idiots increases viewership which increases ad revenue.
  11. I don't doubt this, but when I hear stuff like this said about a player, I always want some kind of proof. I mean what level of a turd was he? A floater? A bottom of the bowl submarine? Do we have examples where he undermined management, or picked fights with players? Or did he just hog the buffet table and let loose with bad gas in the dugout?
  12. I am an Orioles fan too. I think Nick Markakis is swell and all that, but Hart has been the better player so far. There is no reason to rank Markakis higher. Lots of Yankees on that list. Very few west of Colorado. 5 of the top 11 play for the Mets or Yankees. Melky Cabrera? Yeah, he's a total stud. You're better than this Rob.
  13. Well ZachJack did make 7 starts in 2006, averaging 5-1/3 innings per start, 5.54 ERA. I realize that's a small sample size but it's in Vargas territory. And Zach is 5 years younger and cheaper. He might actually get better.
  14. Munson may be released if Rivera gets the backup job. I doubt they'll be interested in Munson backing up Rottino in AAA.
  15. This is good move by the Cubs. I don't understand why Lou doesn't like Murton, though. I think it's clear the Cubs are proceeding as though the Roberts deal is dead.
  16. If the get to the point of needing a 7th starter I suspect ZachJack could do just as well (or poorly) as Claudio.
  17. Not with Corey Patterson as their starting CF'er.
  18. So, if another would have claimed him off waivers then they would have had to pay the $3.6 million, right? If so that would be why no one claimed him. Now he becomes a free agent and will be signed for $1.5-2 million. Boy that trade with Arizona didn't have a lot of legs did it?
  19. Oops, guess I missed that! Does he still have turf toe?
  20. Well, Scot Rolen broke his finger over the weekend. Imagine that, Rolen starting the season on the DL! Both he and BJ Ryan will probably miss all of April, so the Blue Jays' good fortune still seems elusive. That's what you get when you trade a good fielding, slugging 3B for a good fielding, constantly injured 3B.
  21. What's really stupid is both these teams come back this week and play exhibition games over the weekend. This is a really stupid idea. Why not just call them exhibition games. It's our major leagues. The season should open in the same country as the teams in the league.
  22. Simmons deserves to be in. There aren't that many catchers in the HOF. Among those who are, Simmons' offensive numbers would rate high. Last November I emailed Rob Neyer and suggested he start a campaign to get Simmons elected. Here is his response:
  23. Overbay missed 40 games and was injured most of the year, iirc. I think the AL has 4 or 5 teams (depending if you put the Yankees in this group) who are better than any team in either league: Red Sox, Indians, Tigers, Angels, (and Yankees). The next group are 3 teams that could compete for the playoffs in the NL, are competitive, but would have to have everything go right to make the AL playoffs: Toronto, Seattle, Minnesota. Toronto is the best of that group. They have a pretty solid player at every position but no real star.
