  1. A catcher who turns in a .957 OPS is pretty impressive. Especially playing in a home park that is still considered a pitcher's park.
  2. Check out the book, Summer of '68, about the Cards-Tigers World Series. We may have a repeat of that great series this year. While the Tigers were running off a great year and eventual championship, Detroit was on fire, sometimes literally, with riots and protests. The book is sloppily written and desperate for an editor, but the information is fascinating. The entire city was under curfew for the summer. Mickey Lolich was in the National Guard, as were many ballplayers at the time. The Guard patrolled the mean streets of Detroit, so after games he'd often spend the night on patrol. I've always tended to cheer for teams whose cities struggle with turmoil, violence, and disarray. They give the citizens something to cheer for together, if only for a brief time.
  3. Just for the record, the Tigers' payroll in 2011 was around $106 million according to Cott's. The Brewers this year was $98 million. Detroit's payroll did balloon up this year to $133 million due to signing Prince. The Giants' payroll in $131 million this year, $118 million in 2011. Cards have been in $109 million in 2011, $111 million in 2012. Texas was $120 million this year. Miquel Cabrera's contract is similar to Braun's. Verlander is in the middle of a 5 year/$80 million contract. I think the Brewers and their fans would have jumped at the chance to sign Greinke for something like that. Detroit's payroll is not out of line with other teams of similar market size. They are no more guilty or innocent of "buying" their team than most any other competitive team in the game.
  4. His job was to go out and take his lumps, and he took them better and more often than anyone could have hoped! Seriously, as bad as he was, it is difficult to protect your personal stats from that role in the pen. No matter how bad you are throwing that day, and he threw bad lots of days, the manager is still going to leave you in there. I'm with Hi and Tight, he was kinda fun to watch....
  5. OK, I admit it will be difficult for me to enjoy a Cardinal-Yankee world series.
  6. Pretty much, yes.
  7. Wow. Enjoy the NBA dude. It's so much fun.
  8. They're all that's left for decent people to cheer for. Are they any more annoying fans or organizations than those of the Giants, Cardinals, and Yankees?
  9. After watching every inning of the 6 Oriole playoff games, I've settled on the notion it's not the actual relievers who make a good bullpen, it's the manager.
  10. Jesus is a Cardinal fan. It's hard to take, but we must accept.
  11. He was "certain" HOF'er early in his career. I wonder if he can still ride that early reputation to Cooperstown. Except for the doubles, Aramis Ramirez has put similar or better numbers in 500 fewer at bats, and two years younger. Ramirez compares well to Beltre too. It will be interesting to see how the HOF voters rate these players in the years to come.
  12. The playoffs have dragged on too long in recent years. As I recall it's worse on WBC years as the season itself ends later in October. Best of 5 series should only have one off day; best of 7, two. I've noticed people start to lose attention midway through the LCS if their team isn't in it. I confess, I didn't watch an inning of last year's World Series. Baseball is the only sport I am truly interested in or passionate about. But there are too many off days in the playoffs and not enough baseball being played to maintain interest. By the time we are in the World Series the Packers' will be about halfway through the season, the Badgers heading into the home stretch. . Few in Wisconsin will care about baseball.
  13. pebadger, this is why the unbalanced schedule stinks. I didn't like the concept of the one game playoff, but I haven't seen this much excitement about single baseball game by casual fans in a long time. I was at a neighborhood bar last night, and the people were watching both games like it was the Packers playing the Bears. A big part of the NFL's popularity is they play so few games in a season, every game is like a playoff game. People felt that kind of excitement about baseball last night. The sport could do with more of that. I really wanted the Braves to win, but it's been clear for some time God loves the Cardinals. I'm jealous and sad about that, but that's the way it is. Russ' original post indicates he thinks another injustice was served by the Orioles winning. I'm a lifetime Orioles fan, but even I knew for most of the season they were way more lucky than good. But in the last month or so, their "good" has caught up to their luck. Buck has channeled Earl Weaver and fashioned a team strong on pitching, defense, and the homer. I expect regression next year, but I am now convinced this really is a good team. Texas has been in a slide that we've seen from other playoff contending teams in recent years. I don't think the outcome would have been any different had this series been a 3 or 5 game matchup.
  14. When and where should Green be playing right now that he isn't? I like him as a player, but has he EARNED time over Ramirez? Would you start him over Ishi at 1st? I certainly wouldn't. He's a very good defender and a better bat at this point off the bench. And Weeks is a core piece and has played like it over the last couple months. I mean, maybe he does "deserve," a better chance, but we're in a race...I don't where else you play him as of now other than off the bench. And while the Aram signing might hurt a lot in 2014, you certainly would have a hard time arguing he hasn't been a great FA sign thus far and well worth the deal... I think you missed the point of my previous post when I indicated Green was most likely odd man out on next year's 25 man roster because, a) he doesn't play ss as Bianchi does, b) Weeks and Ramirez play every day, and c) he's really not a 1B and the Brewers have better options for 1B backup. Green "deserves a better chance" going forward, but I don't see how he gets that chance with the Brewers. He may one of those guys Doug gives away to another organization so he gets that better chance.
  15. Fukudome had a 4 year deal with the Cubs and was granted free agency when that contract was up. International players are not subject to the same rules as draft eligible players. I believe they are treated like free agents when they sign.
  16. Great post, greg. I'd love Green on next year's bench, except I don't think RR would ever play him. He deserves a better chance.
  17. I have a feeling we will never see Fiers pitch as well again as he did in June and July. His ERA is 6.75 in his last 8 starts. If it's a tired or dead arm, then he should be shut down, although I realize they have no one to replace him. That they keep throwing him out there tells me the organization doesn't think much of him going forward and are just hopeful he can help this year. It will be fantastic if he develops into another Marcum. But right handed junk ballers seldom make long successful careers in the majors.
  18. This is his 2nd year back after a major injury and he smoked the ball in AAA. Very encouraging. I was a big Taylor Green fan and still feel he hasn't been given a fair shake. But he doesn't play ss, is only a 1B because RR says so, and with Weeks/Aramis not going anywhere, he really doesn't have a place on the team. Bianchi seems to be a RH version of Green, maybe with more power, but can play ss. Seems to be a perfect low cost solution as a 5th infielder. Gamel should show up with an outfielders glove in Spring training and can be the LH bench bat, filling in at all 4 corners. Add in Schafer and Maldonado and you still have a bench spot for a Grizzled Veteran Gamer Who Plays the Game the Right Way.
  19. Oops, my bad. Well good, maybe Doug is coming around to the notion they don't need a bad hitting veteran infielder.
  20. Good, no risk move the Orioles, my favorite team since I was 6 years old. Wolf can be that Gritty Veteran Gamer helping an inexperienced pitching staff. He didn't look bad yesterday. The league has never really seen him pitch, so the O's might get a lightning in the bottle action for September. He could be a handy lefty out of the pen should they make the playoffs. 2 games out of first place on Labor Day. 2 of 3 against the Yankees in the Da Bronx. Who could have predicted this? At what point will their fans start showing up for games? 10th in the league in runs scored, 8th in ERA. They are the AntiBrewers, a poor team with a great bullpen. Their pythagorean is 63-70, yet here they sit, 74-59. 4 game series against the Yanks in Camden Yards later this week. Go O's!
  21. I'd plan on Segura in AAA for 2013, Bianchi as the MLB starting ss, with Ransom on the bench. don't really like Ransom much, but he's proven useful and won't cost a thing.
  22. This is potentially a great move for Wolf. A contender can add him on Aug 31, and if he eats up some innings out of the pen could even make the playoff roster. A veteran lefty can always be handy in the playoffs. Good luck Randy. You gave us two solid years and were an integral part of the best Brewers rotation I can remember. and as someone else said, you always held yourself accountable. A solid major league pitcher who had a good career and made the most of his talent.
  23. I wonder if the Brewers bullpen would be one of the best in MLB with Buck Showalter as manager. Bullpen management is the biggest impact a manager can have on a single game. RR continulally sets up the pen for failure. Unless management is forcing him to use KRod in the 8th, Axford in the 9th, he assumes an sizable portion of responsibility for their continued failures.
  24. Weeks has been the same hitter he's always been since June1st: 258/357/447. He had a bad spring. It happens.
