  1. Jerry Narron said on the radio pregame the other day Rivera was only here for his bat. Which is a pretty stupid reason. If that's all they need, why not bring up Brendan Katin who really has nothing left to prove in AAA? The bench decisions have been bizarre this year, to say the least. My hope is that when Morgan comes back Nieves is DFA'd, and Rivera and Boggs both stay on the team.
  2. I don't understand why Boggs isn't starting today. I know he's hitting something like .114 but his at bats are great in the way he works the count and he plays hard. He's earned the opportunity.
  3. Yeah, the exact percentage could be negotiated. There's never been perfect economic parity in MLB. The Yankees have always been filthy rich and able to buy just about any player that another team is willing to give up. What they need to do is get back to a system similar to the pre-1994 strike, when any well run team had the financial strength to sing their "franchise" players long term, without crippling their payroll. You can make the argument the Brewers have been able to do that reasonably well the last couple years.
  4. I don't remember who came up with this, but I like this idea for broadcast revenue sharing. Each team keeps 50% of their local broadcast revenue. The other 50% (since it takes two teams to play a game!) is thrown into a general fund which is then distributed equally among all 30 teams. The Yankees would still be rich, but at least the other teams would benefit. This will be the third time I've posted this since last summer for my idea of realignment. Houston moves to the AL West. Each league consists of 3-5 team divisions. Each team plays the other 4 teams in their division 12 times--48 games Each team plays 6 games against the other 10 teams in the league outside their division--60 games Each team plays a 3 game series against each team in the other league, alternating home field year to year--45 games That's a total of 153 games. You could make it 164 by having teams play their division rivals 15 times instead of 12.
  5. If the problem with the DH is that it creates separate rules between the leagues, then it's the NL who should adopt the DH, since most levels of organized baseball now use it. I like the idea of moving Houston to the AL West. It's all just tinkering though, until they get broadcast revenues worked out. They don't need a salary cap or floor if they can get shared broadcast revenue and better compensation of gate receipts for away teams.
  6. So, what if we took a hybrid of slugging and on base? Total Bases+BB+HBP/Plate Appearances. I guess it gives equal weight to a single, BB, or HBP, but so does OBP. Wouldn't this be a more useful stat than OPS, though; and give you about the same information as wOBA, just be easier to calculate?
  7. Farris has played a handful of games at ss. Wheeler played 93 games at ss for Huntsville last year. Farris doesn't appear to be any better hitter than Yuni.
  8. I have a commemorative 500 HR plastic coffee cup that was handed out at a game in 1971. It has his picture on it and the date of each 100th home run and who was the pitcher. Also a gentleman and one of my favorite players. My Dad was a huge fan of those Twins' team. I liked 'em too. Isn't the MLB logo patterned after his profile? RIP, Mr. Killebrew.
  9. I wonder what it would take to get a half season of Hardy back from Baltimore? MacPhail is notorious for asking too much and the organization as a whole is slow to pull the trigger on anything, since every move needs to be approved by Angelos. So they have trouble closing deadline deals. Robert Andino played well at ss while Hardy was on the DL. Perhaps he'll be available, or perhaps his small sample of good play is enough to convince the Orioles he's their ss of the future. In that case, they should be shopping Cesar Izturis. He's probably a worse hitter than YuniB, but at least he's always been a good glove.
  10. J J Hardy has been on fired since returning from the DL. He's running a .879 OPS for season.
  11. Let's get Lo Cain back from KC. He's pounding the ball in Omaha and the Royals don't seem to need him.
  12. I'd guess the comment about Kotsay and breaking pitches is based on his scouting report.
  13. This reminds me of a double play I saw 4 years ago when Ronnie Belliard of the Nats snared a grounder between 1st and 2nd, did a 360 spin and flipped the ball from his glove to Felipe Lopez at 2nd for one, to 1B for two. Just a total surprise and delight to see. Great play by Yuni and Rickie. From the AP story: “His hands are fantastic,” Greinke said of Betancourt. “It definitely wasn’t surprising to see that play.”
  14. Everyone (media and fans) is so obsessed about Greinke, that Marcum is under the radar. Greinke can only hope to pitch as well as Marcum has so far. He's not just Capuano on a good day; he's better than that.
  15. Losing the series in Houston hurt. Being swept in Atlanta was embarrassing, but Atlanta has the lowest ERA in the league. Losing the series at St. Louis wasn't too surprising. The Cardinals have scored more runs than any team in the league. So, the reality is, the Brewers just played 4 games on the road against the best pitching staff in the league, followed by 3 games on the road against the best offense. If you are going to compete, you have to beat good teams once in a while. Well, they finish the season series against the Braves going 3-5. I'll take that; the Braves look pretty good. They'll have plenty of opportunities to take a series or two from the Cardinals. It was a crappy road trip, but it's not the end of the world. Those are a couple hot teams right now.
  16. Don't want to jinx anything, but Shaun Marcum has been terrific. Most of the casual Brewer fan friends I know still haven't realized what a special pitcher he is.
  17. I agree Gomez is best used an 8 hitter. His speed would be really helpful on those (rare) occasions when gets on base and the pitcher needs to bunt him over. Also, he'd have the green light to steal every time.
  18. Rickie's career OPS through his age 25 season was .745. Gomez's is 100 points lower. They aren't comparable in any way. Gomez' obp runs a consistent 50 points higher than his batting average every season. Torii Hunter's obp through his age 25 season was only .310. The difference was Hunter hits for a .264 batting average vs. Gomez's .246. If Gomez could top .270 he'd be a valuable player.
  19. Boggs played 32 games in CF last year at AAA. He's played more games in the minors at CF than any other position. I think it safe to assume he is at least adequate in center. Boggs has a career minor league obp of .379, over 100 points higher than his batting average. Even in his 372 major league plate appearances his obp is 103 points higher than his batting average. He played great in Spring Training. He's played great in Nashville. I don't understand why this team even bothered with him if they had no intention of giving him a shot even if he performs well. He's the 2 hole hitter they need. Sheesh.
  20. It really doesn't matter who was called because they will never play. Gomez is back as the every CF'er. I hate bunting.
  21. On September 19th, 1986, Joe Cowley of the White Sox threw a no-no against the Angels. He gave up an earned run, walked 7 but did strike out 8. He walked the bases loaded with no outs in one inning. I remember reading about this game the next day. I recall a few Angels batters giving him only a grudging credit; saying his control was so bad they never had a pitch to swing at and were somewhat frightened standing in the batter's box.
  22. I have a similar question. If a player is on the 40 man roster but playing in the minor league does he have a major league contract with at least the major league minimum pay?
  23. I've skipped a few pages here. Has anyone mentioned Alcides Escobar is sitting on a .516 OPS as of May 2nd?
  24. Can he play ss? We could use his bat in the lineup every day. Estrada can take his place in the rotation. Problem Solvvvvddd.
