  1. I doubt it. There are other teams as bad or worse right now.
  2. Lucroy and Scooter were pretty much in 2014 form from June to September last year. The team played .500 ball from June 1 to September 8. They went 7-18 the last 25 games in no small part due to sitting down LuCroy, Braun, Jimmy Nelson, and letting minor leaguers play. If the roster stays at its current setting, there's reason to believe they can play around .500 to start the year. Of course that shouldn't prevent them from considering deals at the deadline and continuing to aim for the future. I don't believe this is a 5-6 year rebuild with season after season of 90+ losses. The rebuild of the system started a few years ago aiding by the 2015 deadline deals.
  3. MLB isn't a level playing field because that's the way the owners set it up. The players are only taking advantage of this set up, as in any economic situation. So, it shouldn't be up to the players to suffer via salary cap, since they didn't create the situation. MLB and the owners should fix it. Iirc, they have a level playing field with MLB.tv and other internet revenues. So, eventually, maybe a generation, this should right itself.
  4. Our country applauds entrepreneurs in all walks of life and don't begrudge the money they make. Entertainers like movie actors and rock stars make millions of dollars and Americans worship them. Baseball players are really self employed entrepreneurs. They are entertainers with unique talents that get paid what the market will bear. Yet fans are outraged (outraged!) by the money they make. NFL players are more like employees. Teams basically decide if they want to pay a player or not. If not, the player looks to find work on another team. The league is constructed like a large corporate entity, where the owners make the money. It's funny you never hear anyone say, "I'm so sick of these NFL owners making billions of dollars a year."
  5. Or maybe we've talked Braun into taking a shot at first base? Sorry, I don't think trading for Flores has anything to do with Braun. It's not like they traded for Bautista and are saying "Well, I guess we need to trade or move Braun." Well, I guess I didn't explain myself well. Didn't mean to imply Flores was as good as Braun. But Flores still has rookie status, is only 24 on opening day, and has a AAA career line of 282/376/449 in 563 ABs. He's potentially more than a 4th OF'er, and should Braun be traded this winter, could fill in nicely as an everyday player for a rebuilding team.
  6. This is my favorite trade so far. Flores has hit a bit in the minors with solid obp. It's looking more plausible to me that Braun will be traded. Davis, Santana, Flores, Phillips possible OF'ers in 2016. It's like he's back filling the roster so when he trades Braun, or Segura, he doesn't have to scramble for some retread to take their place.
  7. And yet so far Stearns has continued Melvin's latest trend of acquiring as many free swinging, no power, no walk, low average Latinos as he can. I don't see how that strategy improves team oba.
  8. Yo's K rate was the lowest of his career. His K/BB ratio was the lowest of his career. His FIP was the highest of his career for a full season. Hits per 9ip went up slightly for the 3rd year in a row. I don't see how he pitched better this year than he has with the Brewers. He just played for a better team. He is continuing his conversion from hard throwing K pitcher to crafty righty.
  9. I like the one game playoff for the excitement it generates. I just think it should be between the two playoff teams with the worst record.
  10. There are 3 days between the end of the season and the start of the division series. Let them play a 3 game series. I think the best idea is seeding by record. NY and LA should be in the play-in game(s). The Mets and Dodgers each had 20 games against the Cards, Pirates, and Cubs, whereas those three teams each played the other two from the Central a total of 38 games. In fact, almost 1/3 of the games the three best played were against teams that made it to the playoffs.
  11. I think your points 2,3,4 can be directly related to coaching or at least, a lack of organizational focus. Players made really awful decisions on the field at the start of the season. Roenicke's penchant for bunting out of potential big innings was also infuriating.
  12. They've been around .500 consistently sine June 1, (currently 2 games under). Compare to the Twins, who are 5 games under since that date. Frankly, I think the Brewers are sitting better that Twins, especially in terms of pitching. So they've sort of been the team we thought they would be, if not for the horrible start. It's clear to me Roenicke and his coaches did a terrible job preparing this team. Twins show how one great month can put you in that 2nd wild card race. I think they are under .500 next year and everyone wonders what happened.
  13. Ummmm, I'm not sure this is the place for a political statement like that... Those could surely be fighting words... Why the hate on unions? He got a great contract, agreed to the terms, as did the Brewers. The Brewers are just claiming their legal rights to the contract. Garza may not like it, but this is the deal he signed. It has nothing to do with being part of a union. Playing that card isn't warranted.
  14. Baseball wasn't always a Gentlemen's game. In the late 19th century players were rowdy, unruly, and ready for a fight at a moment's notice. Fans loved it, owners encouraged it. I wonder when it changed. After WWI? The Black Sox scandal? Jackie Robinson? I get everyone is tired of the "race card", but baseball fans skew older and whiter than most other sports fans. (Except possibly Golf.) The league, ownership, and mangement, and coaching skews old, white guys. Managers in particular have tended to be old school. That's changing and I suspect with it will come less talk about "playing the game the right way" as well as fewer instances of retribution for a player showing up another team.
  15. I think the chances of Garza bouncing back are slim to none. He may survive as a 4-5 starter, but it's going to look somewhere between Suppan and Wolfe in their last years. Garza hasn't made 30 starts in a season since 2011 (31). That year his K rate was 9, his K/BB rate 3.13:1. In his peak years his K/BB rate was always above 3:1. He arrived in Milwaukee and it fell to a still respectable 2.45:1 last year, but the downward slide has started. Now it's a 1.95:1, and his K rate is 6.3, and his walk rate is up. Hits are at a high rate not seen since the early days with the Twins. He's going to have to radically change his approach to be successful. I doubt that happens.
  16. My Oriole friends are upset about this trade. That must mean it's good for the Brewers! BrewCrew has picked up two pitchers originally drafted by the Orioles in two days, Harder being the other.
  17. Meanwhile Jonathon Broxton continues to blow leads and stink up the bullpen.
  18. How does Pedro not get in on the first ballot? He is arguably the most dominating pitcher in his prime of all time. Career ERA of 2.91 pitching in the steroid era, 10 K/9ip, 2.4BB/9, 4.15K/BB ratio. Simply outstanding.
  19. Tremendously overrated player. There must be a dozen late 20's poor defense, RH sluggers in AAA who could do his job just as well. But of course they weren't 1st round draft picks.
  20. Despite the horrible collapse, they finished with 8 more wins than last year. I'll never understand why Braun had to play out the last weeks of September while their best power hittier (Davis) sat out almost every game, but that's on our manager. A winning season, barely, and improvement over the previous year. Not as much as hoped for going into September, but about on par with projections at the start of the season.
  21. Where is the evidence or even conjecture that Bagwell used steroids?
  22. So...you're OK to pay him $14 million, but not $16 million? Really, what's the difference? They have no viable option at 3rd. He's solid at 3B and can still hit and they have no replacement who can reach the numbers. I think it's foregone they pick up the option and a good idea.
  23. This is the only time the strategy is justifiable. Even then, I have never seen that it works. Whenever a team does this in the 9th, I turn off the TV because it's game over.
