  1. Let me add I think it was really stupid to bring Parra in during the middle of an inning. If you are trying to evaluate your potential starters, then have them pitch as close to a starter's routine as possible.
  2. I assume you mean Gomez and not Gerut? D'oh ! Yeah, tough day at the office.
  3. Well they at least have the option to send Gerut to AAA if he struggles in the Spring. It really might be the best thing for him. He's the CF'er of the future, but that doesn't mean he has to be the everyday CF'er in 2010, if there are better options. EDIT: When I write Gerut I mean Gomez, of course. Me great big dumby.
  4. Glad to see Ivan Rodriguez brought up, if only briefly. The more he plays the more he's forgotten. But for an 11 year period, from 94-2004, he hit .315/.357/.513, while carrying the reputation as one of the best defenders of all time. His numbers fell off a cliff after his age 32 season, which isn't that uncommon for everyday catchers.
  5. I think The Truth speaks the The Truth. And that pretty much throws the season away, imho. For this reason I will not post on the prediction topic until the rotation is announced. I think Bush and Parra have both shown they are healthy and pitching well. They should be 4th and 5th. Bush will be wasted in the pen and won't be successful.
  6. I find it hard to believe the Brewers weren't clear about their projected role for him when he signed. My guess is he wasn't sure how he'd do in camp so he took whatever offer was on the table. Turns out he's feeling pretty good and the ego of a former star player is a hard thing to calm down. So now he believes he is capable of being a starter and wants the Brewers to release him if they don't give him that role. He's convinced he's better than Gomez and deserves to take his place. If he's not guaranteed to be the starting CF'er he'll refuse the major league contract offer.
  7. According to baseball-reference.net Kendall is 3rd on Mauer's list of most comparable players through age 26. Kendall's *OPS+ for his first 5 seasons (which takes into account the era of the player), was 121; Mauer's through his first 5 seasons was 127. As I noted before, the difference between the two comes with the 6th season-2009 for Mauer. Kendall's numbers fell considerably that year, where Mauer's made a big "look at me I'm Yogi Bench" power jump. So maybe this is the fork in the road and Mauer is on his way to a top 5 catcher of all time, if not the best ever.
  8. Until last season, he was basically the same player Jason Kendall was at that age. I'm guessing he'll be really good the next 4-5 years with some injury issues and regular time at DH. After that his offense will probably decline like Kendall's unless he moves to a different position.
  9. Well said bjkrautk.
  10. So because they cut Iribarren they had to look for a middle INF for organizational depth. And since Texas had just picked up Iribarren, they no longer had a need for Olmedo. It's a funny world, this major league baseball. I hope they do give the back up job to Kottaras. Reports I got from friends in New England indicated he's a solid catcher.
  11. I understand that. But there's an attitude on this topic that anybody no wait, everybody is better than Suppan. I hate defending him, and prefer he's the odd man out in the rotation if that's what's deserved, but his detractors seem to think he's the worst pitcher ever. He's not. Given his ERA was 4.43 before his injury developed, it's just possible he can provide acceptable value as a back of the rotation starter. Maybe not $14.5 million worth, but some value just the same.
  12. fwiw, Suppan had 12 quality starts last year. He had another 5 starts where he went 5 innings and gave up 3 ER or less. I realize that's hardly outstanding, but to insist he's terrible isn't really true. More than half his starts he went at least 5 innings and gave his offense a reasonable chance to win.
  13. I'm glad for the Twins and their fans, but two words come to mind: Jason Kendall. Kendall's first five seasons: 314/406/456--.858OPS Mauer's first five seasons: : 317/399/457--.855OPS Oops, edit: The difference is Mauer's 6th season, last year, when he was a monster. edit: code --1992
  14. Service time won't start until Opening Day, right? So, if he can be truly be activated and sent to Nashville in 6 weeks, you're talking about less than a month service time.
  15. I see it as an extensive of Billy Beane style operations where you build a team by exploiting markets, using economies of scale, and other economic/business models. If I'm right, then I like it because instead of being emotionally tied to certain players, it means an organization is more committed to building the most successful team possible.
  16. Well, he's already part of the 40 man roster, so isn't he drawing major league pay?
  17. I am totally satisfied with that set up for the pitchers.
  18. Well, good thing they didn't trade McGehee. This could be a lucky break for Heether to play 3rd in AAA and get the first shot in Milwaukee if something goes wrong up there. Hopefully it' s not serious for Gamel, but you gotta figure he's not going to be 100% much before June.
  19. Dumping Bush will be a huge mistake.
  20. If Inglett can play ss at all he's probably heir to Counsell's roster spot going forward.
  21. He'll have great stories to tell the grandkids. Good for you, man. You fulfilled the dreams of thousands of kids and played major league baseball. For a brief time you were successful in a key role on your team, the fans adored you when you came in the game, and you even were an All Star. Nobody can take that away from you. Hope you invested well. Thanks for wild, great times back 2005.
  22. While Suppan's contract is bad, it's not Bill Hall Contract bad. I'd rather they try and dump Suppan and agree to pay $8 million of his salary, then try and save Bush's $4 million salary.
  23. The idea is FSN could show the game so MLB has to black it out, otherwise they would be competing. I don't like it, but I think that's the way it works. At least on DirecTV. They blame it on MLB's blackout rules. Bakc when I got ExtraInnings Brewers games broadcast by the opposing team were blacked out even if FSN or WTMJ chose not to carry the game. It's ridiculous and stupid. Hopefully Thursday's game won't be blacked out.
  24. Also, as I found out last Monday night, the game will most likely be blacked out in Wisconsin.
