  1. Bush's K rate this year 7 per 9ip. His walk rate is under 3. In his 4 seasons with the Brewers he's had two above average seasons, two below. Given the way he was pitching before the injury it's reasonable to think this year would have been another above average season. Someone above posted Bush is a No. 3 starter at best, as though that was reason enough to cut him. That's plain silly. No. 3 starters make $10 a season over multiple season contracts. I can accept the idea that Looper isn't worth his option and that Suppan is toast, but I'm not ready to throw Bush out the window as punishment for the team's disappointing season.
  2. Wow, great grading Louis. I agree with pretty much everything. At first glance I thought you were being harsh on Villy. He had some very good stretches, but in the end, he was gadawful for a considerable time. With the benefit of hindsight, I wonder if it would have been smarter to put him in AAA all year and see if he could make it back at rotation depth.
  3. I hope Parra has to win a starting job in Spring Training 2010 and isn't guaranteed a spot.
  4. I'm OK with bringing him back as long as it's not an excuse to stop searching for better starting pitching. Kendall, Hardy, and Cameron are making $19.75 million this year. Set those 3 free and you are saving a substantial amount from the 2010 payroll. Something on the order of 20%. Another $20 million falls off the books after next season when Suppan and Hall are gone. So even after signing Looper and accounting for arbitration increases, the Brewers can still have a substantial amount of money for a quality arm.
  5. Good point. When GMs are looking to trade a major league regular they usually want a package of prospects and a player or two from the 25 man roster. Kind of like the Orioles trading Tejada for one good pitching prospect, a 3B prospect, Luke Scott and Mike Albers. Or the Sexson or Overbay trades when Doug got a mixture of players who could help now along with (theoretical) prospects for long term. so, without turning this into a trade proposal thread, if the Astros were to trade Oswalt, McGehee could be part of the deal along with possibly Hardy and some low minors pitchers. That'd be fine with me.
  6. I understand. I just don't think McGehee will bring a useful starting pitcher in a trade. Not this winter. Gamel might. That's why I'd trade him for the right player.
  7. I realize Salome's AAA season was somewhat disappointing, but it's not like it was awful. Platoon him with Rivera and maybe the Brewers would get a .700+ OPS from the catching position for the first time since.....ever.
  8. I don't buy the notion McGehee's value has peaked. No GM in MLB is foolish enough to think he's this good based on on less than 400 major league plate appearances. He may indeed be the next Casey Blake or Mark Derosa, but no one is going to believe that until he gives a 2nd year of similar performance. If they get an offer for Gamel that includes a pitcher of comparable talent and age, then they should trade him. If not, keep them both and let it shake out next year. I have no problem with Gamel dominating AAA in 2010 if McGehee turns out to be the Real Deal. If McGehee ends up more like his minor league career predicted, then you slide him into a utility role and make room for Gamel. The bottom line, there's no need to trade either one unless they get blown away by an offer.
  9. Finish above .500. Take 2nd place. Bush pitch really well in every start. Escobar, Rivera, and Gerut play 2 of every 3 games. Hart plays great to increase trade value. Counsell doesn't see another game at 3B. Corey Patterson strikes out in every plate appearance.
  10. Well the Brewers must have more African-American players than any other team in MLB, so if racisim from the fans is part of this, it's reasonable that would not be a problem in Milwaukee. Bradley might be more comfortable in Milwaukee.
  11. The espn'ers loved the deal and proclaimed the Cubs de facto division winners because they'd signed Milton Bradley.
  12. It's a sign of organization dysfunction that they expected better results from this team. They made it to .500 in early August and were within a few games of that until the last couple of days. Last year they way overachieved. They had a crappy rotation and a GM who did nothing over the winter to correct it. I don't have an opinion on Cecil as a manager, but had they finished last place it wouldn't have surprised me. I'm pleasantly surprised they've been hovering around 3rd/4th most of the year.
  13. If Gamel brings a comparable pitching prospect then you have to trade him. I doubt McGehee brings as much talent in a trade as Gamel.
  14. Dumping Cameron, Kendall, and Hardy saves $19.65 million from the 2009 salary. Figure in the raises they will get in 2010, and it's hard to justify keeping any of them. The team payroll is too high for the results.
  15. Really? Other than Parra, the rest of this year's rotation represent about the healthiest pitching careers in recent memory. Until this summer Bush has never been on the DL, never even injured in college. Suppan has a chance to make his 30th start the last week of the season-that's 11-30 starts seasons in a row. Looper has made 30 starts each of his last 3 seasons-his first 3 seasons as a major league starter. In 12 seasons overall I don't recall him ever being on the DL. Yo missed most of last year but it wasn't due to a pitching or arm injury.
  16. I'm betting Lopez has parlayed his fine offensive season into a fulltime 2B status with some team. Personally I don't believe he'll be able to maintain this level, but even at his career numbers he's not a bad option for a team in need of a 2B. I doubt he'd be interested in a reserve role with the Brewers.
  17. MJL, I agree with you about ERA, but I don't agree Bush has been a replacement level pitcher this year. He had a 4.58 ERA before he took a hit on his pitching arm. The ERA ballooned when he tried to pitch through the injury. Admittedly he wasn't sharp yesterday, but his last 3 starts he's posted a 3.20 ERA. Since coming off the DL Suppan's ERA is 3.21. I think it's pretty clear the problems this season revolve around Bush and Soup missing a month plus in the middle of summer, Parra' ERA balloning by over 2 runs from last year, and the lack of pitching depth to address these issues.
  18. At this point I think the best move is to put Gerut in CF and use Cam's money to try and improve other areas, like pitching.
  19. Ueck has said a couple times Gamel, Escobar, and Rivera will be playing A LOT from now until the end of the season....did Macha say something about this in the pre-game? bob sounds like it's a policy change, not just an idle comment.
  20. I grew up in Iowa and lived there until 1990. I could get WJR every night down there. I loved listening to Ernie. When I moved to Wisconsin, I couldn't get the station anymore. Probably because of the terrain. Still, I'll miss him.
  21. It's infuriating, the Kendall love. If he was truly good or provided some stability for a beleagured pitching staff, I could understand it. But he's been pretty terrible all year behind the plate. That he is still playing means only one thing, he'll be asked back next year.
  22. Brewers average 4.74 runs per game. When Looper starts they average 5.6. That doesn't seem like "incredible run support" compared the team's overall average runs per game. 13 of his 30 starts have been QS. Another 5 starts he went 6 or 7 innings allowing 4 runs. Hardly overpowering success I admit, but he has pitched well enough in 18 of his starts to win with this offense. He's had just two starts all year where he failed to pitch 5 innings. This team doesn't have the pitching depth or health to let him walk away. In his last 15 starts he's 8-7, 4.40 ERA. That's what the team was hoping for when they signed him. He should end up with 33-34 starts and 190+ innings. You can complain that's not worth the extra $5.5 million for next year, but who you gonna get that will turn in this kind of performance for less? and in a one year deal? It's quite likely he'll turn down the option and end up somewhere with a 2 year deal in the $10-11 million range.
  23. Let's move Casey back to catcher.
  24. This can't be true. We've all know Doug doesn't pick up "power arms". He's in love with the soft tossers!
  25. I'd bet Milwaukee needs to offer him another contract that is equal to or more than a possible contract offered by another team. The pressure from the Players Union is tremendous on players. They don't anybody agreeing to home town discounts or less than FMV contracts. I'm sure the Union has a strategy in place to fight the low ball offers they saw last winter.
