  1. Well they could trade Braun. He is probably the most valuable trading chip the Brewers have.
  2. He would have to "call as good of a game" as Kendall in the eyes of management -- which will be impossible since it's a completely subjective thing (and they love Kendall and want to kiss him). That good game calling has contributed the 3rd worst pitching staff in the league.
  3. Pujols obp/slg: .445/.683 *OPS+ 193 Mauer obp/slg: .446/.637 *OPS+ 189 Baseball-reference.com gives Mauer credit for 104 runs created, Pujols, 125. So, is Mauer's 104 + defense <, >, or = Pujols' 125 + defense? How do you factor in the supposed weaker NL?
  4. Well if loses the MVP award to some middle infielder on an East Coast team we'll know the fix is on.
  5. The Twins came within a sudden death playoff game of winning their division last year. They returned with essentially the same roster and as good a chance of any to take the division. Their season is right on par with the Brewers in terms of disappointment.
  6. I hope Pudge retires after the season. He has 2600 hits, 303 hr, 1200+ ribbies. That should be enough for HOF.
  7. Good point. I was thinking RBI are team dependent, so it's somewhat beyond the hitter's control whether he leads the league in RBI. It does make it harder to win the traditional triple crown. I agree with you, leading the league in batting average and home runs is impressive.
  8. Excellent defensive catcher. Leads the league is batting average (.380), obp, (.446), slugging, (.637). Winning this triple crown is more impressive than the "true" triple crown.
  9. Outside of Bush, the most recent any of these guys had a respectable season in a Brewers uniform was 2006. That's a long time ago. I'm not even sure I'd consider Vargas to have been a fine #5 starter, and we gave up a much better starter in Doug Davis as part of the deal to acquire him. Citing a collection of barely passable #5 starters and guys from 3+ years ago isn't exactly changing my mind. I didn't think I needed to cite Suppan and Looper since you used them as an example of marginal talent. Your premise was Melvin has never been able to get production from even marginal pitching talent. I cited several players. Last year's rotation was pretty talented, using the lack of marginal rotation talent in 2008 as a criticism is curious. I'm not coming back to this topic. I should have know better! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tired.gif
  10. Boston has now fallen out of the Wild Card. If they don't make the playoffs you can include them with the Mets and Cubs. Seems like a lot of preseason predictions had the Brewers 3rd or 4th in the division. Their season has been disappointing to me, but probably not from a national perspective. Didn't a lot people think Arizona would make a run for the playoffs? Why does everyone think their young players are so talented?
  11. I think a lot of people forgot that part. After the Yankees' spending binge this off-season, allocating over $400 million on three players, Cashman asking Melvin to pick up part of a 1 year, $10 million contract was ludicrous. Melvin was probably right to turn the deal down, just based on the principle of it.Especially considering they outbid the Brewers for CC just because they could.
  12. Capuano, Bush, Ohka. Santos spread 55 starts over two seasons with an ERA around 4.75. Vargas was a fine as a 5th starter. Suppan's first season was exactly what anyone should have expected. His peripherals last year closely match his first year, his ERA is just higher. This year he was right where he was in '07 until his final two starts when he was probably injured. Looper's season so far is similar to his first as a starter with the Cardinals. Last year is probably the outlier, but, as with Suppan, it could also be the product of the Cardinals having a superior pitching coach, and the manager using his players to their most effective. Looper and Suppan are fine if you consider them as 4/5 starters. Despite their salaries, I am sure that's how Doug had the depth chart laid out in his mind, with Gallardo, Parra, and Bush being the most productive starters. McClung was the 6th starter. These 6 healthy and pitching around their career norms was enough to make a run at the playoffs. Of course that didn't happen. I think it's fair to blame the organization and/or Melvin for the lack of starting pitching depth in the high minors.
  13. Hasn't LaRussa done this before, using a stack of relievers for an occasional game? I think Earl Weaver used to throw a reliever out there to start once in a while when the team was in a long stretch without an off day. He'd have the guy pitch 3 or 4 innings then switch him out. Of course back then relievers were capable of pitching multiple innings a game. That gene has been bred out of them. In 1982 Sammy Stewart pitched 139 inning in 38 appearances, 12 of them starts. He had a complete game shutout and 5 saves! Why can't Seth McClung do that? Actually, that's sorta been Villy's season, hasn't it?
  14. A good GM would have known. You're hitting on the reasons why this topic bugs me. It's legitimate to discuss the good and bad of what Melvin has done, but this topic if full of posts that speculate what he could have done but maybe, possibly didn't. Hardy would have brought young power arms. Hart for Greinke. Re-sign CC. The argument that Melvin should have done these moves assumes they were possible and available and he must have just been lazy or stupid. Doug isn't scared of trading players or signing free agents. I am sure he entertains offers and has discussions on nearly every player in the organization. Most likely he didn't hear any offers that he felt would improve the team.
  15. He also signed Sheets to a 4 year deal. I don't recall Benny being a "soft tosser". This topic is so much better than the one about Melvin needing to get fired because in retrospect he didn't all the right things to get the Brewers into the playoffs. Great job nate82. Thank you.
  16. Prince doesn't play the game the right way. Sure chicks dig the long ball, but if David Eckstein was our 1B the Crew would be in 1st place.
  17. Many posts in this topic criticize Melvin for not locking up players pre-arbitration. Many other posts criticize him for doing just that. If retrospect means you can have it both ways, then I guess he is a terrible GM.
  18. I don't know how people here can criticize the Davis trade when they also criticize Melvin for not trading players at peak value. Davis was about to get expensive and was coming off a rather poor season. He had a 4.91 ERA and was about to double his salary. I don't think it's Melvin's fault the trade worked out better for Arizona. Brady Clark had 134 plate appearances after leaving the Brewers. So, they should have held onto him for that? The Koskie trade was a great trade. But I guess the concussion is Melvin's fault? And of course Melvin should have known that trading 27 year old career minor leaguer Mike Adams, he of the recent 5.75 AAA ERA was terrible idea. All he needed was to sit out two years, have TJ surgery, to become a good reliever. I didn't like the Gross trade at the time. The short term effects have been negative. However, Butler looks pretty good and may soon be in the majors as a Dave Bush type middle rotation guy. I'd take that for a 4th OF'er any day. Overall Melvin has done as well as any of the top GMs in recent years. As has been asked earlier in this topic, if not Melvin, the who?
  19. That's the word I was looking for, STEWS! Good call sheethead.
  20. Maybe Gritty Veteran Kendall will put his hand through the water cooler and bust a finger pregame. I can't wait to see him glaring/pouting on the bench all night. Tonight could be the best lineup they field all year.
  21. There is no reason to offer Lopez arby or try and sign him. McGehee is adequate at 2nd, Counsell will assuredly be offered another one year deal, and the Hurricane is capable should Weeks not be able to play in 2010. Even if none of these players work out, which is unlikely, finding a .720-.740 OPS keystoner isn't that hard.
  22. When is the right time to sit Kendall? Every time is the right time to sit Kendall! Hurray!
  23. I can't listen to this game anymore. Wake me up when it's over........
  24. You want Earl Weaver. I've always been frustrated that no one seemed to learn from his genius. The "newer ways" you seek were being used by Weaver 40 years ago. To me he is clearly the greatest manager ever. He took mediocre 32 year old White Sox reject Don Buford and told him all he wanted was Buford to drew 90 walks a year. Don't worry about anything else he told him, just draw walks and get on base. Buford went from a .6xx OPS White Sox to 4 straight seasons of .800+ OPS for the Orioles. He rejected the 5 man rotation with a simple question: why start your 5th best pitcher on the team when you could start your Ace? Instead he took the time to use off days and the occasional spot start by a reliever to make sure his 4 starters got plenty of rest. His theory of pitching, defense, and the 3 run homer is often ridiculed by the like of McCarver and Morgan as playing station to station offense. But that's not true. The 3 run homer is all about OBP; if you constantly have runners on base, big things will happen. Weaver's entire tenure with the Orioles is full of such examples. I don't understand why other don't emulate him.
  25. They can't hold any kind of lead and they can't score more than 4-5 runs a game. The offense will have to explode to run off a winning streak. They haven't done that much this year.
