  1. From 2005-2008 the organization had good depth at starting pitching. This year they didn't due to losing Sheets and CC, a lack of ML ready talent in the high minors, injuries to Bush and Suppan, and Parra's ERA skyrocketing up 2+ runs. To say 'twas always thus is revisionist thinking.
  2. Well thank God for Escobar then. If Hardy was signed to a long term deal right now all the armchair GMs would use this as another reason why Melvin should be fired.
  3. Thinking outside the box probably involves trading Braun who has the most value of any player on the team. Finding a LF'er who can hit 25-30 homers isn't all that hard. The Brewers could replace Braun easier than Prince. The fans would revolt, but that's a risk when you think outside the box. Here's an excerpt from McCalvy's piece. Doug makes some very good points. Of course the Monday morning QB's will disagree. :
  4. It may be best to keep him as the starting ss on Opening Day. If he hits at all you can trade him. If he returns to 2008 form, then you can consider trading Escobar since they'll have control of Hardy through 2011. This is a smart move by Doug.
  5. Judging who the Angels gave up it probably would have taken Lawrie and their best AA pitching prospect.
  6. I was relieved he only went 5 in his last start and Macha didn't send him back out there after that long 6th inning rally.
  7. Good point about Yo. 26 starts, 3.51ERA, 164 + innings and only 23. If he cuts his walk rate in half he'll start winning awards. Wonderful pitcher.
  8. I'll go one step further and suggest management shares many of the fans' opinions regarding several players.
  9. A home run is the most efficient method of scoring one run.
  10. I missed it all at the end. With the Nationals series over the weekend I was able to reset my sights on the season. With all expectations of the playoffs gone, I can enjoy reasonably competitive baseball for the next 35 games. At least it's not 2002 anymore.
  11. Patterson isn't the answer in CF. But they could replace Cameron out there with a slick fielding CF'er at a cheaper price even if he isn't as good a hitter. Is Gerut that man? I don't know. But the offense can absorb Cameron's loss through Weeks, Gamel, a solid platoon partner with Hart, or a different RF'er. fwiw, I'd use Weeks at leadoff next year, bat Gamel 2nd, Hart/RF 5th. Maybe Escobar is the lead off of the future, but he won't be better than Weeks next year.
  12. Actually it was 4.38 at the start of the Florida game. According to logan's chart that puts him somewhere between a 2 and 3. The Brewers need a good left handed starter that can slide into that 2 hole. Bush is then the no. 3, Parra and Suppan take up the rear. It was probably a mistake to assume Parra was prepared to be that top of the rotation lefty this year.
  13. Lord, please, NO! Corey's 30 years old with 3748 major league plate appearances. He should be killing AAA pitching. But that shouldn't be construed as anything significant. His major league career OPS is .696. He isn't suddenly better.
  14. No, Hardy screwed up and hit terrible. Don't you think this is nerves?
  15. The biggest weakness this season was a lack of rotation depth. For that reason alone you have to pick up Looper's option. If he declines, so be it, but they need to stockpile as many arms as easily and cheaply as possible. He's provided 11 quality starts and several of the 5ip/2-3 er, or 6ip/4er variety. No one's saying that's great, but it's better than the Burns/Villy crap we've been seeing. If he accepts arbitration it doesn't mean you stop looking for pitching over the winter. Can't assume Parra will pitch well next year. Nor Bush or Suppan. So you have to give yourself better options than what Doug provided this season.
  16. Like CC, Carlos Lee, and CoCo, Melvin has to make a serious reasonable offer to Prince either this winter or next, or both. When he turns it down, Doug will have all the reason he needs for the fans to understand Prince must be traded.
  17. I have no problem offering him a 5 or 6 year deal this winter and tearing up next year's terms. It will send a message to the fans that after a disappointing season the organization is still committed to winning. 5 years/$90 million. That would take him through his age 30 season. If he's still hitting then he'll be able to get a big deal with the Yankees.
  18. I hope this is the true reason. Otherwise you can throw me on the Fire Macha bandwagon. I don't think he has any trade value yet. He is Joe Dillon or Keith Ginter. Or Wes Helms of the Future.
  19. So, let me get this straight. Successful managers win more games compared to unsuccessful managers. Brilliant!
  20. That's the toughest part. If they were truly a .500 team most games would still be competitive and fun to watch. Except for Yo, Braun, Prince, and Counsell, the rest of team is bumbling and fumbling just like earlier in the decade. This team has way too much talent for such crappy playing.
  21. The Orioles are probably not yet to the point of being competitive, but I wish they'd have an interest in Hardy. But Izturis is signed through next year, and they may consider Hardy too old to be part of their rebuilding process. Still, I'm guessing they'd be willing to trade Pie, a player who think of as the next Corey Patterson, but who really has improved as the season rolled along. He is hitting 290/336/460 in his last 108 plate appearances dating back to May 3. Granted that's limited duty and almost exclusively against righties, but he can play CF. The Orioles won't trade Tillman, Matusz, Arrieta, or Bergesen for Hardy, but I'd settle for one of their "lesser" pitching prospects like David Hernandez or Troy Patton plus Pie for Hardy. OF: Hart, Pie, Braun IF: Prince, Weeks, Escobar, Gamel, Counsell, McGehee C: Rivera, Corporan or Salome Rotation: Yo, Parra, Hernandez, Bush, Suppan Bullpen: Usual collection of mutts. ...OK, I can dream can't I?
  22. I'm still watching, still enjoying, and wished there had been a game on last night. My winters are long and dark and lonely without baseball. I have to say though, these last several weeks have been painful to watch the Brewers. It's almost like 2002. Once they get behind, by even one run, you know the game is over. When Yo gave up the 2 run homer Wednesday night, I knew the game was over. This is the hard part. We all keep saying they are just a .500 team, but the reality is they are something much less than that. They are playing like the 2002 team; as the game goes along they getting farther behind. I don't stick around till the end for most games. Still, a world with bad baseball is better than one with no baseball. So, I'll keep tuning into Ueck or flipping on FSN for the first pitch of every game.
  23. Who's this Hoffman guy I keep hearing about?
  24. Me too. Good luck Bill. Won't be surprised if you hit 25 homers next year as the starting ss for the M's.
  25. He's too valuable to trade at this point. I don't believe we'd get enough in return to justify trading him right now. He's too good, under control for 6 more years, and relatively cheap. It would also be the death of the team from a fanbase point.Look I don't want to trade him, but the fact he's under control for 6 years makes him very valuable to other teams. Consider Josh Hamilton brought Herrera and Volquez, imagine what Braun could bring. Similar pitchers to those two plus a LaPorta type to play LF, plus a throw in or two? If you want to fix the pitching but quick......
