  1. It's been exactly a year since we had this topic last year. Here is my list so far: 1. Silversun Pickups - Neck of the Woods 2. Bloc Pary - Four 3. Walk the Moon - Walk the Moon 4. The Years - Red Whine and Clarity EP (free download on their website) 5. Hey Rosetta - Seeds (actually 2011 but I didn't find them until this year) 6. Young Empires - Wake All My Youth 7. Santigold - Master of My Make-Believe 8. Cloud Nothings - Attack on Memory 9. Civil Twilight - Holy Weather
  2. So today I was playing NHL13 online on my Xbox...and what do I see...presidential campaign ads all along the boards. I thought video games were a safe haven from the annoying campaigns ads but I guess they are going to jam it down my throat any way possible. To make it worse, it was the candidate that I'm not voting for too...but because this is not a political forum, I'm going to leave it at that.
  3. This article jogs my memory on a couple of good articles that I remember on Fangraphs. From the viewpoint of many people that already posted in this topic...it appears that Dave Cameron also agrees. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/are-relievers-benefiting-from-pitching-less/ And the sequel to it... http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/reliever-usage-redux-a-follow-up/
  4. Minnesota's Mariucci Arena is a true Olympic sized 200x100 rink. I'm not sure why the Badgers made their rink 200x97. Fun fact here...the 2010 Olympics did not play on an Olympic sized rink, they used the Canucks NHL sized rink. A bigger rink will definitely open up the offense. It gives you more room to pass...especially if the d pinches along the half boards. This is why they play 4 on 4 in regular season OT in the NHL. The smaller rink has quickened the pace of the game. The hands required to play the NHL game is incredible. Each pass has to be on the tape and lanes close up quickly. Blake Geoffrion won the Hobey Baker as a Badger and his game just doesn't translate to the NHL like Stepan's, McDonough's, Suter's, or Pavelski to name a few Badgers that have had success in the NHL.
  5. I do realize the connection between the Preds and Admirals. I wasn't trying to come across as a Ghost of Quantrill either...I was very excited and tired last night. Because WI has no team, I think it is okay to have other favorite teams and the Preds are definitely a top 3 favorite team. Unfortunately LA is also a top 3 team too. It was fun watching LA turn from being crappy to being very skilled but very raw to now clicking on all cylinders. Kind of reminded me of how the Brewers were able to turn their team around. I believe they are the youngest team in the NHL too. It should be a fun series to watch. It will also be fun watching my patchy playoff beard grow. I might post pictures of it. It's better than Crosby's. I believe Milwaukee has potential to become an excellent hockey city. It is a passionate city that will have no problem support any team that is winning. Look at how this state supports Badger hockey. Personal opinion here, I think the NHL game is better than the college game (as opposed to basketball or football). The pace is so much fun to watch. The city will embrace the game.
  6. What a series by the Yotes! As a Yotes fan (thanks to the NHL xbox game for creating this fandom), I watched the confidence evolve over the second half of the season. Knowing that a deal is in place for them to stay in Phoenix has me even more excited. Going 11-0 in February was a lot of fun to watch. In that stretch, those games were actually quite similar to the games 4 and 5 of this series. Good defense, active sticks, and a lot of one goal games. Everyone contributes. It was a great battle by the Predators. After they scored that goal, I thought it would turn into another OT game. Mike Smith played a huge role in this series win. I really think a lot of it has to do with the style of defense the Yotes play. Still can't believe he was a waiver claim. Believe me, it was really hard rooting against the Preds in this series. They have done everything right plus I really enjoy watching ex-badgers. Suter is a superstar in the making. I really hope the Preds can sign him long-term this offseason. I would hate for the Wings to gobble him up. Time to try to get to sleep. Should be fun getting up at 6 for work tomorrow.
  7. I remember this article from fangraphs a couple years ago (the same one Logan mentioned). The statistics that went into these numbers is way over my head...but if you are curious, they are here. I had to find them in an archive of the website. I see in the comments that they have a similar one for pitching too. The results of both of these studies are below. For Hitters For Pitchers Batters 50 PA: Swing % 100 PA: Contact Rate 150 PA: Strikeout Rate, Line Drive Rate, Pitches/PA 200 PA: Walk Rate, Groundball Rate, GB/FB 250 PA: Flyball Rate 300 PA: Home Run Rate, HR/FB 500 PA: OBP, SLG, OPS, 1B Rate, Popup Rate 550 PA: ISO Pitchers 50 BF: nothing 100 BF: nothing 150 BF: K/PA, grounder rate, line drive rate 200 BF: flyball rate, GB/FB 250 BF: nothing 300 BF: nothing 350 BF: nothing 400 BF: nothing 450 BF: nothing 500 BF: K/BB, pop up rate 550 BF: BB/PA 600 BF: nothing 650 BF: nothing 700 BF: nothing 750 BF: nothing I guess it's not that surprising that pitching takes larger samples to become reliable. I do find it amazing that a stat like BA and BABIP which a lot of people use to evaluate players don't actually stabilize in a season.
  8. As a civil engineer, I know that you can't pave roads with asphalt in the winter when the ground is frozen. After looking at google maps street view (because I couldn't remember), this stretch is indeed asphalt. Concrete doesn't cure well in the cold either (which I can almost guarantee they will use at some point to fix the bridge). You can add admixtures and heat the ground to make concrete cure in the cold...but that gets expensive quick. There is no way they would have started this project start in November without being able to use either material. That just isn't very economical. That's the beauty of Wisconsin having a paving season. As much as I hate the way I think the DOT operates...they really didn't have much of a choice here. It's a case of pick your poison.
  9. I might be able to get it. I'm headed to my parents house in Janesville right now...and I know they still get the paper. Sorry to hear about your loss.
  10. I like this one too. http://www.andylambgolf.com/online-lessons/lesson1.php The other one I like is also the one I can't find a picture of....but it works almost the same as the above link. I saw this on the show The Golf Fix. Place your hands at your side with your palms pointing away from your body. Then put your palms together with your right arm going over the top of your left arm. When you do the first half of the back swing (and follow through)...the crossover created by your hands forces you to stay on plane. Obviously once you get past the point where the club goes past being parallel to the ground...this drill doesn't do much good.
  11. I prefer not getting a membership anywhere and just playing random courses throughout the area. I hate being limited to one course. Disclaimer: I am not a PGA pro...but I do know the swing fairly well. My swing coach (me) has helped me have an average score in low 80's/upper 70's. Regarding the question about your backswing...I always like grabbing 2 clubs or maybe even a sledgehammer and just swing them back slowly (not meant to be at full speed). Its very hard to get off plane when you have all the extra weight. I always like the John Daly approach of starting the backswing by thinking low and slow. Just make sure your the toe of the club is pointing straight up when the shaft is parallel to the ground. You should be able to get it pointing straight up with just a shoulder turn (and maybe a little bit of hands). If you want...I could probably give you more direction if you posted a video of your swing.
  12. I had a second interview out there once (didn't get the job)...but they did show me the Red Rocks natural Amphitheater the day after my formal interview to sell the area to me. They didn't have a show when I was there, but it was pretty awesome to walk up there and see a giant stage between two Red Rocks.
  13. http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk3/weshelmsfan/RAM.jpg If anyone is curious...here is a screenshot from the task manager. I'm still very confused but I think I am just going to move on to acceptance. Edit: It might be something with the Kernel Memory, but I have no idea what that is.
  14. I thought about that...but I don't think the difference in 24 mb per gig of ram is significant enough to create the 1gb "missing" memory. I have noticed that it is running faster than it was before, so whatever I did must have worked. Why can't it be more black and white?
  15. Thanks for the help. I see that if I add the memory that I am currently using to the equation (2.55GB), it adds up to more than 8GB. It must be double counting something in the cached memory....a grey area if you will.
  16. Yesterday I was able to steal two gigs of memory off my brother's old computer after he built a new desktop. He planned on putting it into his new system but found out that DDR2 RAM is obsolete. Score for me. Anyways, I installed it on my computer and it looks like it worked as it now lists 8GB of ram in the properties over where it used to say 6GB. However, when I go into the task manager, I see that the Total Available memory (8180MB) does not equal the Cached memory (6232MB) plus free memory (57MB). This may be a stupid question, but shouldn't TAM=CM+FM? Or is this an issue with Vista where it isn't very memory efficient? I know in order for me to get up to 8GB of ram, I had to take out the two 1GB sticks out to make room for the two 2GB sticks, so I know at least one of them has to be working.
  17. It looks like the realignment won't happen next year after the union blocked it. Their argument with 7 vs 8 teams in a conference sounds eerily similar to the problem that the NL central just fixed. Link
  18. We've had a Motorola Surfboard modem with Charter for as long as I can remember. I know we never rented a modem from them. You just have register the MAC address of the modem with Charter. I know we did this by taking it into their office...but I'm pretty sure you could probably do this over the phone too. It definitely pays for itself. One time we overloaded the circuit and fried the modem so we had to get a new one....But even then, in the long run, we have still saved oodles of money.
  19. While watching football, commercial breaks right after a commercial break. A score happens...then a commercial...a kickoff that lasts 5 seconds...and then another commercial break. Isn't one commercial break enough? Why can't the NFL be like the NHL where there aren't many commercials at all?
  20. Looks like we have nothing to worry about. Under the current system, if Pujols signs with the Marlins, the Cards would get a second round pick in compensation. Although they don't say how the current system is going to change, it's good to hear that it is going to change. Link
  21. Just an update here. I chose to do nothing with my dvd drive to see if that would fix the problem. Today when I restarted my computer, I saw that my disc drive posted and it now works. I didn't open up my computer or anything. Good old Vista.
  22. This thread has been good to me this month....lets see if the brewerfan tech-o-weenies can help again. This time it is my computer. I've got a 64 bit vista desktop (I know that is already bad) that the cd-rom drive is not working. Last night when I plugged my zune in to charge it, a screen popped up saying there was a disc in my drive in addition to the computer recognizing there was a zune already plugged into the computer. I doubt these are related, but they came up within a few seconds of each other. The problem is that there was no disk in the drive. This fake "cd" had a 2mb capacity and had one audio file on it. The computer recognized it as an audio cd. However, it couldn't be ejected or formatted. When I put a real disc in the drive, it would spin, but the computer wouldn't recognize it. I haven't opened up my computer or messed with any of the connections in a long time, so I know it probably isn't something I physically did. Maybe a connection became loose, but I don't know. I thought restarting my computer would fix it, but it only made the problem worse. Now the drive isn't posting in the device manager and I'm pretty sure it isn't even posting in the BIOS. Usually when I start up my computer, it would look for something in the cd drive first to boot off of, but it doesn't do that anymore. I tried a system restore to see if that would fix the problem, but that bluescreened of death when it was rebooting back after the restore took place. This is a problem I've had this problem before. It would actually loop the blue screen non-stop. I fixed this before with a vista recovery disc, but I didn't have this option as my disc drive was not working. Luckily it booted up in safemode. The drive still wasn't recongnized though. I then undid the system restore and it booted up normally without any blue screen. So I at least I was able to get back to where I started. The drive still isn't recognized though. Where should I go next? I know I never use the disc drive, but I also know it is probably not good to have a computer without one. To me, it feels like driving a car with no spare tire. My USB backup works just fine, so data backup is a non-issue. Thanks.
  23. The computer has 8 gigs of RAM. It just took forever for his computer to process everything. I know Vista is slow and it sucks, but I don't really I don't do enough computing to really see this. I would love to upgrade to 7 but I just don't want to spend the time or money on it. Plus there are some programs that are on here that I would prefer not to download again. Great to hear you got it working Invader
  24. Does the SD card show up in the device manager? If it does, I've had this problem before then. Try uninstalling it in the device manager and then restart your computer. It should automatically reinstall upon being rebooted.
  25. Well I updated the video card drivers last night. After the install and reboot, the screen was still vibrating a very little bit. To test it, I took off any screen saver and any sleep mode last night and just let it run. Just in case the screen went black, I had the mouse on the shutdown button. This morning when I got up, the screen was still up, so updating the drivers might have worked. If it fails, I will check for an on board video card. I know he does not have a newer gaming card as he is not a gamer. If you are interested, the card is a nVidia geForce GT 120. After thinking about the back of his computer (it is not the easiest place to get to), I believe there probably isn't an on board video card because there is only one monitor jack on the back. So if it fails, odds are he will have to get a new video card. Would it be better for him to get that or just get a whole new desktop? With technology being so cheap these days, it might be a better long term solution. All he would have to do is pop in his old hard drive into his new computer if there were any files that weren't backed up. On a side note, he was complaining about Vista being slow. After looking at his startup processes in the task mananger after a reboot, he had 95 running. Just after killing all the autoupdates process/services, we dropped it down to 70 and it was running about 50 times quicker.
