  1. i know the DSL rosters aren't out yet, but wondering if anyone's heard anything about Brandol Perez? do we still have him? That was an intriguing signing and was excited to see him finally pitch this year.
  2. what about having two events- one in Madison and one in Milwaukee? i think having a room for ourselves is a good way to go, no matter where it ends up being. i live in Madison- so preference is there for me. i can also help plan the get-together if you need any help- just let me know.
  3. Is a pitcher's hitting ability factored into pitching WAR? if not, what is a statistic that factors that value? Also, i was a little confused when reading about how WAR is computed for offense. from my understanding it said it was based on wRAA, which said it was a counting statistic not an average. so does that mean that WAR is commonly increased if a player plays more? if so, how could it be computed differently for players with not many plate appearances?
  4. well said endaround
  5. Do you think he'd be worse than Eric Farris?
  6. I know scouting reports are hard to come by from the DSL. He's I think 18, plays SS, and has an OPS of .935 so far in 56 ABs. Does anyone know anything more about this kid? http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?pos=&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=606115
  7. as a short-term fix- in all the SS discussions, i can't recall people raising up Edwin Maysonet's name. I've heard plenty regrets over losing Luis Cruz, but looking at their numbers they seem like fairly comparable players. So, if people had wanted Cruz to make the team in Spring Training or call for a deal to be made for him now, what about giving Maysonet a shot? He at least has to be better defensively than Yuni/Counsel/Wilson, and it would seem that it would be hard to do any worse offensively.
  8. I see his name listed as our 2nd round pick from the 2008 draft, but i can't find any of his stats and yet i see that he signed. What's his story?
  9. This wasn't intended to mean that the 'titled' should or shouldn't be in the majors or why they were selected to be there. it was intended merely as an interesting observation that i don't think they would even start at AAA and yet are in the majors. i don't think most teams can say that about this many position players on their team.
  10. there's no way Kotsay starts over Boggs or Katin at AAA. He's an aged veteran with no incentive for a coach to play him except for production- and he's not going to produce anything near what Boggs & Katin do down there. Gindl will play because he's a young prospect. The only way Kotsay starts at all is if Katin's DHing, but even then- i'd have to believe that he'd be splitting time with Carrol or even Almonte. Furthermore, the only reason Reed is starting at all is because Boggs has been in Milwaukee and Almonte has been injured.
  11. All of these guys were on our Major League roster to begin the season...the pathetic thing is, is that none of them are or would be starters at AAA. Sad. They're blocked in the OF by Gindl, Katin, Boggs at 1B by Gamel and at C by Kottaras. How is it possible that they can't even crack the starting lineup in the minor leagues but somehow be in the majors? -frustrated roster bench decisions.
  12. I figure the Brewers will have around $20 million to spend this offseason (assuming we stay at our current payroll)- factoring a rough estimate at additions in arbitration raises, contract increases and the loss of free agent contracts. This is who I would spend that on:SS- Jose Reyes (maybe $8-10 million/year over 3-5 years)CF- Grady Sizemore (maybe $5-6 million/year over 2-3 years)- Indians have a team option on himBackup IF- Marco Scutaro or Jamey Carroll or Omar Infante ($2-3 million/year over 1-2 years)Relief Pitcher- 2-3 million on someone for 1-2 years Potential Lineup (not a weak out throughout- and better IF defense too)STARTERS BACKUP STARTER RELIEFSS- Reyes~ Scutaro, UI Greinke Axford-C CF- Sizemore+ Morgan+, 4OF Gallardo Braddock+2B- Weeks Marcum KintzlerLF- Braun Boggs~, 5OF Wolf+ McClendonRF- Hart Narveson+ Free Agent Signing3B- McGehee Rivas * / Rogers* / Stetter+ / Parra+* 1B- Gamel+ C- LuCroy Kottaras see 2012 Free Agents:http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2001/04/potential-free-agents-for-2012.html
  13. thanks for the article about bailey- i am then assuming jemile weeks and jake arrieta were in similar situations- about the money. but, still i wonder why so many of those picks were left unsigned that year.
  14. I'm sure this has been brought up here before, but i was glancing at our recent drafts and was surprised to see Jake Arrieta (26th), Jemile Weeks (8th), & Andrew Bailey (16th) among our unsigned players that year. they'd be great to have in our system right now! along with these guys it seemed there were more than usual unsigned players as well. I know when Melvin took over - he made it a priority to sign our picks to avoid just this type of regret- as that killed us in the past ie Nomar. How did this happen? Why didn't we sign more guys that year?
  15. Actually, now i wonder: If Kotsay didn't have a Major League guaranteed contract, would RR/Melvin still keep Kotsay over Boggs?
  16. I guess what i was trying to get at, was I like Boggs over Kotsay. Is it possible that any team would take Kotsay from us so that we can keep Boggs? If so, what would it take for Melvin to let him go?
  17. Since RR seems intent on keeping Almonte for his defensive flexibility, once he comes back from the DL, Boggs, and his switch-hitting power off the bench, is the likely candidate to go to AAA or lost. Would there be any teams we could trade Kotsay to- even if it was just to take his guaranteed salary off our hands...which also seems to be the primary reason we've kept him this long. His .357 obp is respectable, at least, and has a history of good pinch hitting.
  18. that's right the question is in regards to - 'right now'. I don't know what you mean about meaningless. Most of the things we talk about in sports by that logic are meaningless ie top ten lists, roster arguments. They're hypotheticals- just fun to talk about, to argue about. In this case, I thought it was interesting that right now, there are three sets of back to back order guys- some of whom (especially berkman) who normally wouldn't be in this conversation- who are near the top of the major hitting categories- that all seem fairly comparable. Thus, a question of topic- what tandem is hitting the best right now?
  19. Braun & Fielder Holliday & Berkman Ethier & Kemp a friend gave this hypothetical to me, which i thought might help answer this question. There is 1 out in the 9th, you are up by 1 run and there is a man on 1st. who would you most fear to face back to back- right now?
  20. It is important that Gamel gets more experience at 1B, but it is also important that he gets more experience against Major League pitching. The latter, I see, is far more valuable and difficult to adjust to than learning 1B for someone who has already been trained as a 3B. As has been mentioned by many before, his fielding was never thought to be his defenisve issues- it was more the inconsistent arm. So, would he really need a full season to learn how to receive throws from the infield?
  21. Again Gamel's smashing at AAA, and I think it would be horrible if they don't bring him up for Kotsay or Almonte come May or June. However, let's assume he makes it up to Milwaukee by May and hits well there. Barring injury and playing solely as a reserve, how many ABs do you think Roenicke could get him? 250 ABs does not seem out of the question, and this seems necessary to me to get him ready to possibly take over full-time next year. here's my breakdown: Batting mainly against righty's:3B- a little over once/week (30 games)RF- about once/week (25 games)1B- once/month (5 games) LF- once/month (5 games) If he averaged 4 AB per start, he'd get 260AB and this doesn't include PH ABs.
  22. what happens if Gomez is injured or ends up really sucking?
  23. toolivebrew- good call- couldn't agree with you more. looking around the league there are a lot of guys battling for that fifth rotation spot that i'm sure would be better than Mitre that if Melvin was set on dishing out Dickerson- we could've got for.
  24. Huge upside. making 8.5 million. becomes a free agent after the season. we could trade for him and if it looks like he's healthy maybe an extension.
  25. yeah, i'd put Dye over Milledge, but keep inglett. Where would this team rank in the MLB? would they finish .500?
