  1. can I just say that today sucks because I cannot wait until tomorrow. I think the MLB draft is my favorite sports event of the year.
  2. and don't forget about Luis Aviles at Wisconsin
  3. i'm all for sending Peralta down to the minors to work out the kinks. preferably AA, as we've seen the confidence boost that Jungmann got in Colorado Springs. in the next couple weeks when Knebel, Garza, Blazek are back as well, moving Peralta down to the minors would also allow us to keep another reliever, longer. five spots are set with Jeffress, smith, knebel, Thornburg, blazek. then I would think that the brewers would want to keep both marinez and Ramirez, who have the most upside of all the remaining relievers (torres, Capuano, boyer), who are receiving every opportunity to succeed in order to increase their trade value. seeing the posts about sending davies down for a month to gain an extra year of service time makes team sense as well. I would do this in addition to Peralta and move Thornburg or smith in the rotation to take davies' spot. I don't think they'll "forget" how to be a reliever and ruin their trade value if they falter (they can always be moved back to the bullpen), but potentially could raise their stock even more if they succeed as starters. would love to see them get another chance.
  4. just trying to find the positives- lol. Broxton's only started 4 games since may 25 but in those he's riding a .375 OB%. let's hope he can keep it going and keep improving with more consistent ABs. but, with Santana coming off the DL soon- they may be harder to come by. and fwiw, since coming back from DL on May 20, Peterson's 15 for 30 in 8 games with 3 HR and 5 doubles for an insane 1.579 OPS. this may be his last chance to stay out of AAAA no man's land, if he's not there already.
  5. flores has a .370+ OBP in May, Liriano still hasn't seen the field (no pun intended) still has a lot of upside, and Broxton is hitting stride in the game he has started since being back up from his recent AAA tear. Perez has been playing great, Pinto & Pina holy cow, cecchini has been finding his game again, and marinez, torres, and Ramirez could establish themselves in our bullpen or return some lottery tickets at the trade deadline. just trying to stay positive. on another note- with the guys coming off DL in the next week or so, I think Capuano, Goforth, and Presley could all be removed from the 40 man without much risk of being taken or loss if they were.
  6. didn't want to start a new thread about this- so hopefully it's okay here, but when LuCroy is traded I can only assume that Manny Pina is brought up who has been tearing up AAA for the past year and half and plays excellent D. If so, would you start him over Maldy? heck, for that matter, if it's Josmil Pinto who's brought up, would you start him over Maldy as well? which brings me to my next question- if the answer to both questions above is yes- then maybe Maldonado may be dealt too. how much is his trade value?
  7. at this point if you could only keep one, would you keep Walsh or Orf?
  8. wow, I hope we get that value back for those guys. that would be incredible. how loaded would our system be? I'm trying to come up with my own list, but I keep overvaluing the players on both sides of the coin. tougher than I thought.
  9. Most often, when asking "what value" a guy has on the trade market, we find players/prospects from other teams that would be ideal trade partners that we think those teams would give up. obviously we don't know those team's systems as well as our own, so to get a more relatable example of someone's trade value- I would like to propose this hypothetical situation: If the Brewers were both a contending team and a non-contender, who would you give up in the system for someone right now? okay, that was worded weirdly, let me use an example: If we were trading Lucroy- what would it take in our own system to get the deal done- ie?, Lucroy for Arcia. looking at it from both sides, would you be okay with it? If (as the brewers current, rebuilding team) you were receiving a prospect exactly like Arcia for Lucroy- would you be okay? AND (if you were a contending Brewers team needing the position in question), would you be okay giving up someone like Arcia for 1.5 years of all-star Lucroy? With that said, I am curious what "value" (players in our system) you would receive for the following (please use a one to one trade if possible for simplicity sake): Jonathan Lucroy Chris Carter Jeremy Jeffress Scooter Gennett Bonus- if you want to take a stab at matching one of our lesser prospects to: Aaron Hill Kirk Nieuwenhuis Blaine Boyer
  10. Still waiting to see our All-Strikeout Super Lineup (2016 K%): 1B- Carter- 32% 2B- Rivera- 38% (once he makes his way back up to MLB) 3B- Walsh- 35% (yes, limited appearances, with limited experience- making him a great candidate to crack the super lineup) SS- Villar- 25% RF- Santana- 34% CF- Broxton- 61% (ok- only 18PA, but his minor league numbers indicate a high propensity to K (2015 in AAA- 28%), and now that he's back with the crew- definitely makes this super lineup) LF- Nieuwenhuis- 27% (last year was at 34%) C- LuCroy- 18% (the weak link of the group) P- C. Anderson- 57% against the right group of pitchers we could set a new single game strikeout record, easy!
  11. who knows and who knows...but, it sure would be nice to have him at the top of our 3B prospects right now and coming up with that wave of guys around 2018.
  12. also probably the Blue Jays (Ryan Goins), Angels (Giavotella & Pennington) & Cardinals (Wong)
  13. too bad he's coming back so soon in a way, because it moves perez to the bench who, yeah, has been great lately. hopefully, he'll get some more consistent playing time to showcase his improvements after Hill is gone.
  14. Braun's trade value seems so hard to predict right now. I continue to hear how big his contract is, and that we'd have to take on a sizeable amount in return. Another way to look at it might be to ask, if he were a FA right now, how much could he expect to get on the open market? Below are some comparisons from recently signed contracts. I'd say his contract is about at market value right now. Name- contract length / Salary/year / Opening Day Age in 1st year of contract RYAN BRAUN- 5 yrs / $21M / 32 in 2016 Robinson Cano - 10 yrs / 24M / 31 in 2014 Chris Davis - 7 yrs / 23M / 30 in 2016 Hanley Ramirez- 4 yrs / 22M / 31 in 2015 Jacoby Ellsbury - 7 yrs / 21.8M / 30 in 2014 Shin Shoo Choo - 7 yrs / 18.5M / 31 in 2014 Alex Gordon - 4 yrs / 18M / 32 in 2016 Russell Martin - 5 yrs / 16.4M / 32 in 2015
  15. fwiw Aaron Hill has been on fire lately. Obviously his 3HR performance boosted his numbers, but he's on a nine game hitting streak and since April 20 he's hit .299 with an OPS of .841.
  16. thanks casey- really helpful to know. sounds like ripe ground for a new stat- go for it!
  17. so prospect-wise, Abreu and Carmona are essentially Nicolas Pierre & Franly Mallen. (shrug), at least we're doing something, but would love if we made another Lara like splash in the int'l market, especially since this year we've got some extra financial flexibility. when is baseball going to address this vast systematic inequity in the int'l market? I'm tired of seeing things like last year when the dodgers got 3 of the top 10 and cubs got 5 of the top 30, or even more egregious, in 2014 when the NYY signed 9 guys in the top 30, including the #1 & #2 best prospects. between the Red Sox & Yankees that year, they signed 7 of the top 10 prospects available. that's unbelievable- can you imagine infusing even just one of those top guys in our system each year- our top 25 would be ridiculous! not to mention these clubs' obvious advantages in FA as well as int'l free agents, especially from Cuba & Japan. [sarcasm]Competitive Balance[/sarcasm]
  18. wondering if there's any merit to this. For pitchers, there's K/9 to judge strikeout proficiency, but wouldn't a more valuable statistic be K/PA? this would track the frequency of strikeouts as opposed to the total. For instance: Pitcher A strikes out 3 in 3 innings for a 9.0 K/9, but faces 18 batters for a .166 K/PA Pitcher B strikes out 3 in 3 innings for a 9/0 K/9, but faces 9 batters for a .333 K/PA Pitcher B is by far the more proficient strikeout pitcher, but in a traditional K/9, they both have the same value. What essentially we want to know is not how many they get per inning, but what percentage of guys do they strike out. Is this already a stat somewhere, and if so- how commonly is it utilized?
  19. when gennett comes back, i also hope that rivera is sent to AAA to play regularly and Perez is kept to be given another look at the MLB level to see if he is someone who could help next year and beyond. he's still young, and seemed to add some extra power and (although minute) a bit more plate discipline in the offseason.
  20. interesting note- if I counted right, there are 39 Brewers who are either currently on the roster, played at least one game this season, or would be on the 25 man roster, if not injured. Of those 39, only 11 of them were either drafted or signed as an amateur by the Brewers, the rest, 28 of them were acquired by other means. this ratio is a little less at AAA, at 13 homegrown and 22 from elsewhere. not sure what this means, other than we don't have a lot of drafted talent in the upper levels.
  21. fwiw Carter has a MLB leading 1.131 OPS for first baseman
  22. [sarcasm]oh, Cesar Jimenez, where are you?[/sarcasm]
  23. there is no need for a lefty in the bullpen if you have a reliever(s) who can get guys who hit from the left side of the plate out, or for that matter, who do well against either side. furthermore, for the purpose of this year, what does it matter? this whole year is like an extended spring training in some aspects. it is about seeing which guys will "make the team"- meaning for 2018 and beyond and finding out which guys are either trade chips or bums. kirkman serves none of these purposes.
  24. is he really going to be put on the 25 man roster? if so- I don't understand this move at all, unless he becomes filler in AAA. cannot believe he would put together a strong enough campaign to be a "flip" candidate and is not part of 2018 and beyond, so is only taking a roster spot from young guys who may be that we need to see, evaluate, and give experience to on the MLB level - like Goforth, Cravy, Magnifico, Pena, Chapman, Burgos. what am I missing?
  25. very informative all- yes, I still have in mind that one pitch of Kodi's in some amateur all-star tourney where the ball breaks and the announcers freak out. so, call me one of the dreamers. here's hoping all these guys can get it straightened out, whether its bad luck, or mechanics or execution.
