  1. The good and scary thing about Gallardo is we haven't seen his best stuff yet. He's already pretty mature in terms of pitch selection, but he's going to get even more precise. On another note, does anybody think that Gallardo's delivery is like Liriano's? I don't and wasn't that the knock on Liriano? Who knows. Gallardo's itty-bitty by comparison. That said, both have the ability to make hitters look really, really bad.
  2. Teddy Higuera was coaching in Tabasco state the last I heard. The last time I saw him, two summers ago, he was shopping for slacks at that Target on Chase. Seriously. "'Stoy buscando un trato," he said, meaning he was looking for bargains. Where's Ernie Riles? Edit: And yes, that means I, too, was shopping for slacks at that Target on Chase.
  3. 1. Brewers Someone had to.
  4. My main quibble there is that there's no tailgating, unless you can bribe one of the parking attendants as we did last year (passersby looked at us grilling brats as if we were assaulting a she-goat). There's a good barbecue joint on the other side of the freeway and some decent sports bars nearby (get a "michelada" at least once), but it's not the hotspot in town. Where to go, of course, depends on your taste. We went to Chinatown and near Rice University and had a real good time. Houston's pretty spread out and the traffic makes the Marquette Interchange construction look like a cruise down Lake Drive. As for the stadium, I found the place a dump compared to Miller, but not so much a dump as Wrigley (I did not stand in a puddle of urine).
  5. I have two of the most horrible words in broadcasting: Ron Santo. Ron Santo and his arsenal of moans makes the Rock look like Mel Allen. I'm still bitter about his shabby treatement of Prince a few seasons ago, but he did lend credibility to the Piggly Wiggly grilling segment. Keep him, for lack of anyone substantially better.
  6. AN OPEN LETTER FROM TRIBUNE CORP: You WILL mythologize this team, though it goes three-and-out in the playoffs and fails to qualify in 2008, having not won a World Series in 100 FREAKING YEARS. You WILL accept the peevish explanations and syllogisms of hotheaded alcoholic Lou Piniella for mismanaging the team down the stretch. You WILL make apologies for the ass-clownish antics of Ted Lilly and Carlos Zambrano. You WILL NOT boo the swan-diving sluggers like A-Ram and D-Lee, who have been embarrassed by the likes of Doug Davis and Juan Cruz. You WILL pay $7 for Bud Light from a can served by a carnie in a place that smells like a Calcutta landfill and then compare that to receiving communion from the pope in the Vatican. You WILL continue to commodify failure and throw a chunk of your substantial disposable income toward buying Cubs cozies and wind chimes. You WILL make certain to annoy every non-Cubs fan within reach with your impenetrable arrogance about the Cubs, even though they are about to get their asses handed to them in ignominy. If you don't like it sue us or kiss our $24-a-share asses. We're incorporated in the Antillles. -SIGNED, YOUR CORPORATE OVERLORDS
  7. Some happy pablum from Attanasio or veiled scorn from Laurel Prieb? Give me Mr. Attanasio every time.
  8. Parody songs make me uneasy, but anything to spite the Cubs, I guess. What could have made the song better was to note John Wayne Gacy, the most famous Cubs fan of all who asked for Cubs updates from death row (next year!) and who retrieved many of his victims just blocks away from Wrigley. Edit: (My uncle just noted that Gacy is probably the second most famous Cubs fan, after Al Capone or maybe John Cusack). And yes, these are all jokes.
  9. "The bar is raised for all of us." Does that comment from today's press conference mean that Melvin contemplates an in-season move to ax Yost if the Brewers falter out of the blocks? Or that Yost is with us until the end of the next season, getting fired if we don't make the NLDS? The latter is my vote (not my preference, but my expectation).
  10. After Hart hit that home run in Atlanta, I promised God I would volunteer at a local homeless shelter for a win. That didn't pan out, but I don't want to tempt fate, so I'm going to the shelter anyway. Now that I'm almost done with my mourning for the season, I'm left wondering what God owes me to make up for the Brewers' failure. I figure at least an NFC Championship game for the Packers and a Rose Bowl for the Badgers, right? (I'd also ask for a Bucks playoff berth, the Cubs out in the NLDS, the Bears not making the playoffs and another La Russa DUI arrest, but those seem to be a given.)
  11. Oh to be a fly on the wall of Tribune Corp. I hope that their baseball team follows the fate of their tanking stock, which is the sword hanging over any discussion of the sale of the Cubs. (And I agree with a "No Belling" rule. That way lies madness.)
  12. I think that in anticipation of their for-sure, rock-solid-lock World Series triumph, the Cubs should plan the ticker tape parade down State Street, should begin the casting of a Lou Piniella statue at least half as terrifying as the "Harry Caray in Hell" work currently outside Wrigley, should pick the day that the Winnetka public schools will be closed in celebration and begin laying the foundation in Lincoln Park, right by the Indian totem pole, of a massive triumphal arch to commemorate this historic and guaranteed occasion.
  13. Yep. Hart is fearless in the clutch.
  14. I hope those shirts are made in China, and that they either burst into flame in unison, engulfing Yakzie's and the Cubby Beer, or that the wearers catch an exotic fungus paralyzing their thumbs and thus rendering them unable to play that stupid bean bag game.
  15. I have a friend who has been undergoing medical treatment the past three weeks out-of-state. No cable. She's a big Brewers fan. It's my sorry duty to give her the update every night before she goes to bed on what happened that day. We've agreed that we are going to stop that practice this season, for her benefit.
  16. Ned Yost's defenders recall the dead-end defenders of a certain American president. There never seems to be any bad consequence that can't be explained away by either a) chalking it up to having arisen from an inscrutable, unknowable plane or b) ascribing the bad acts to someone else. In last night's case, the numbers are pretty clear about the effectiveness of Turnbow after a night in which he has pitched (and why he pitched with a plus-5-run lead the night before is zany on its face); and about Linebrink's effectiveness having allowed runners. He took Braun's bat out of the equation AGAIN in a situation where it could have been useful. The Shouse rightie matchup? Eh. Numbers can be used to argue either way. Either way, Yost again made decisions that did not put his team in the best position to win and yes, it could have been predicted. The Wise decision? There's really no words left to comment on that other than it was unconscionable. Even given our reservoir of talent, there's absolutely no guarantee that the Brewers will enjoy this position again any time soon. Putting-and LEAVING-Wise in there is about all the evidence one needs to reach the "nay" conclusion. (All of which I find ironic, since Wise is one of those dead-end defenders of a certain American president.)
  17. Let the East Coast Sports Network proclaim the death (and ignore the success of the starters in the recent recovery effort). It will keep the price of Ryan Braun tees a little lower. edit: Whoops. SI, not ESPN. So it's a Time Warner product, not ESPN. edit 2: I've botched again. Won't bother correcting. It's Friday. I hate East Coasters pissing on the Brewers. I'm going home to watch the game. The end.
  18. Anybody suprised that this happened on a team managed by St. Tony La Russa? Be interesting to ask what Mark McGwire thinks about it, now that he's shrunk to the size of a healthy Prince Fielder stool. As for La Russa, he's probably too busy napping off a boilermaker on a side street. Seriously, La Russa's always posing for holy pictures as a manager, but never really has had to answer what's gone on in his houses.
  19. This debate has been going on all year, and the fact that I've even said anything probably corrodes my argument that I'm sick of the argument. That said, the fact that this tiresome debate rages tiresomely is a sign of the health, not the weakness, of the Brewers organization and the fan community. We're big-time, baby! There are enough lip-pursing bitties, er, rational thinkers, on one side who heave to with great expressions of tut-tut for those who would dare to offend the king's, er, Prince's, majesty. Any outburst of emotion is rejoined by a baseball-reference.com.-referenced lecture delivered with such piety as though it was issued from the Chair of Peter. And there are enough sinning Hester Prynnes like me who believe that it is our God-given right to cry sour pickles at the mere sight of Greg "I'm-not-the-one-that-Marcos-killed" Aquino. In short, people care, and hotdamn, it's better breathing this air than it was having to wait on Matt Stairs to hit his weight.
  20. Steve Stone is 34.5 percent more of an ******** than Joe Morgan, but 7.8 to the 4.6 millionth power less of a crapheel than Peter Gammons.
  21. I don't know why a kvetched when Linebrink stayed with baby's momma. Turns out, that was his best week as a Brewer. There's a very good reason the 'Dres were willing to part with that mutt.
  22. Some people mock the memory of the Polish cavalry as it lay slaughtered before the Wehrmacht. The Brewer fan understands the beauty of fighting for the hopeless cause. Concede nothing to these Cub bastards. "I die hard, but I am not afraid to go."-last words, Gen. George Washington.
  23. Which of the pitchers on that squad still gets a pass? Shouse? Linebrink now is etched in the lore of this star-crossed season. Who is without sin? A lefty yet to be born? My God, it sucks that one part of the Brewers' game, say starting pitching or the top of the order, never seems to be enough to save the team from defeat. The team is exposed. Our hopes were all empty. And we who have waited so long will suffer some more. Maybe those jerks are on to something, maybe we should adopt the doofus position of Cubs fans and pretend that none of it matters and get to Yakzie's in time to get a good seat and drink pitchers of overpriced beer and pee our pants. Expect nothing and you'll never be disappointed. (I hope I get a chance to deny I ever said any of this, by the way.)
  24. My friend Mike put it perfectly: He's having to come up with a whole new vocabulary to describe his horror and shame at the way the team is playing, the English language not being suitable enough to describe the collapse. I think he'll need to be pretty fluent, since the way things are going, we're not going to break .500 (btw, is that a separate thread? It should be.).
  25. Well, I don't think a stat in the world, or the soothsaying of a thousand Sabremetricians, can honestly stop the ire of this owner when his team, once 14 games above .500, fails to win 80 games. Of course no one wants to run an organization like the drunk at the end of the bar. That said, the utter meltdowns over which Yost has presided have exposed him, crying to the avenging anger of the baseball gods, and now he must be dealt with.
