  2. I know I'm late to the party here, but it finally happened! 22 PAs to get a hit!
  3. That sure looked like a good pitch on gameday. He must have golfed the damn thing out.
  4. No no no no no no no. Putting another guy on for Holliday? Take your chances with Pujols...
  5. Here's what the Brewers need to do now: Cut Wolf and Davis, let Villy and Narveson start. Cut Zaun, Escobar, and Hart, replace with whoever. They do that, and they're instantly a 120 win team!
  6. Not to mention, a 100 point difference is MORE significant for 2 lower production players. If someone goes from a .600 to .700 OPS, that's a 16.67% increase in rate stat production. If someone goes from a .700 to .800, that's 14.4%. And so on. The fact that you think a .100 increase in OPS is statistically insignificant is laughable at best, deplorable at worst.
  7. PS3 was awesome before they decided to ban installing Linux on it. Now that it can't be used as a computer, it is lacking a bit of the strength it once had (in my opinion).
  8. "It seems to me that whomever came up with BABIP is cherry picking stats that favor the HR pitcher." I completely disagree with this. If you're removing HRs from the equation, you're lowering BABIP vs BA against. Since most people regress BABIP to the mean, it would suggest that the HR pitcher is actually overperforming with a .280 BABIP! Either way, the stat is not used to measure pitcher skill, it's a means to regress other stats such as ERA. If anyone looks at a pitcher with a big ERA for his career because of HRs and a low BABIP, nobody is going to say that he's a good pitcher. BABIP is not something that is a measure of worth, it's a tool for future projections.
  9. Bring it on. I guarantee this can happen as long as we're playing in Madison. It'd be a good tuneup for the season.
  10. I think he was referring to "not likely, but even at his age he's still better than Suppan if healthy," not the retirement comment.
  11. "Gerut in CF last year was abysmal" This is definitely false. Small sample size alone, if we're going by UZR, Gerut was a + defender last year, and has been for all but one season as a CF.
  12. "best case is that you make a deal like Boston did today." This deal wouldn't have happened if Hall's salary wasn't effectively league minimum. Not even Dayton Moore would be willing to take the full cost of hall. We saved a couple mil on Hall, and got rid of him. It was about the best DM was going to do. Acting as if we could have gotten a player of even Kotchman's level for Hall is absurd unless we had paid a lot of cash. I'm guessing SEA is still sending a decent prospect and covering even more of Hall's salary. Would you have traded Hall + a mid-level prospect + 10 mil for Kotchman? Hardy is a different story, but that's not relevant.
  13. "why do we have to presume a dropoff from Fielder and Braun? if anything, i think their numbers were a little below their ability in 09. " Fielder is an amazing hitter. He put up Pujols-esque numbers. The idea that he could improve on that seems highly highly unlikely. If he matches 09, I will be both surprised and ecstatic. Braun got a little lucky at the plate last year with an increase in infield hit % and an ever so slightly inflated BABIP (probably inflated due to the infield hit %). I expect him to be pretty much the same as 09, possibly a slight increase in SLG. I can't, in good conscience, say that Fielder will improve on a .412/.602/1.014 line, no matter how good a hitter I think he is.
  14. "Hope springs attorney" This is the 2nd time I've seen someone type this today. Are people intentionally getting it wrong? Am I missing the joke? I'm not trying to be condescending or anything like that, I'm legitimately thinking I'm not getting it. It's like "for all intents and purposes"; Many people think it's "For all intensive purposes," and half the people I know who type it like the latter are joking. It's "eternal," not "attorney" if it isn't a joke. To the topic: I think the team has improved the pitching, but I'm really scared of the 6-7-8-9 part of the lineup. The Brewers are going to be middle-of-the-road offensively at best unless Gomez and/or Escobar somehow break out offensively. I think they're probably an 80-83 win team as it is, but they could easily improve on that projection if they get a little bit of luck.
  15. We'll see how his defense does in Citifield. The Monster did not help him, and his defense has been pretty bad the last 3 years. The HR stopping ability of Citi is going to hurt him a lot, too. I think that Bay has a decent number of places that he fits extremely well, and the Mets don't seem to be one of them.
  16. "I was under the impression that Wolf was only making 5.25 million this year in salary and his list was at 9.25. Am I missing something?" He took a 4 million dollar deferral from 9.25 mil, making his paid salary for the season 5.25 mil. It means we'll be paying him an extra 4 mil the next 2 years over what his contract said.
  17. For all the Melvin-hating that goes on here: Be grateful we don't have Brian Sabean.
  18. Who was it, stoutdude?
  19. "Stephen Strasburg received $50m for 6 years without having to throw a pitch in an MLB game. I would equate that to getting paid. I'm not saying this is the norm, but for many first round picks, they are overpaid from the beginning" I'm pretty sure the 50m was just a number they were throwing out before the draft. The actual contract is for $15.1 million. EDIT: Here's a better link: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4403920
  20. "how they lump all outfield positions together for UZR/defensive purposes way overvalues centerfielders." I don't understand this statement. How does lumping seperate positions together make one overvalued? Is it really that hard to believe that Ryan Braun's defense and position make him significantly less valuable than he seems because of his bat?
  21. "Kapler wasn't going to get $3m anywhere, let alone the $5.2m that Fangraphs predicted" Fangraphs didn't predict anything. It assigned a dollar value based upon his performance as what he was worth compared to the rest of the league on a free agent payscale. I don't necessarily believe he is that good as his sample sizes are miniscule (as stated earlier).
  22. "Podsednik was a soon to be 27 year old with a career .695 OPS when the Brewers claimed him off waivers in 03 and he was 2nd in the ROY that year. McGehee was a 26 year old with a .741 career minor league OPS when the Brewers claimed him. " Yes, but for every McGehee, there's 20 complete busts. Just because we did well in 2 of our scrap heap pickups in 6 years doesn't exactly mean much.
  23. "This isn't directed at you specifically...but what is with the 'saying hi' stuff? I've seen this a few places here and other sites...I guess I just don't get it. I would just say hi, good morning, good afternoon, or good evening back to them..." It's a sarcastic way to point out exceptions to statements. I personally like it, but then again, I love sarcasm.
  24. "The last 30 games of the year they were 14-16. Bad time to cool off. For the year they beat up the bad teams and other than the Dodgers and Cubs, got beat up by the good teams. " The last time they had a horrible run going into the playoffs they won the WS. The Cardinals, as constructed at the end of the season, were either the best or 2nd best team in the NL. Adding Holliday and DeRosa made them a very legitimate team.
  25. Who I don't want to win: Yankees and Cardinals. Who I expect to win: The Yankees or the Cardinals http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif
