  1. "Is a pitcher's hitting ability factored into pitching WAR? if not, what is a statistic that factors that value?" It is not. It is only pitching value. You can, however, head over to the team hitting page to get the pitcher's hitting WAR. "so does that mean that WAR is commonly increased if a player plays more?" It is a counting stat. You are correct. "if so, how could it be computed differently for players with not many plate appearances? " You can just divide the WAR number by plate appearances, or do something like WAR/600 PA to get a yearly expected value.
  2. "What exactly was the Carpenter's son story, again? Was that the deal after the brawl? " I believe that was a quote from him after they brawled. "How will I explain this to my son?"
  3. Single? Go to bf.net. WOAH SOLVVD!!
  4. "Have you tried gobbing it with vaseline before wrapping? I've never had one that bad, and in such an inconvenient spot, but when I've wrapped bad cuts, I'll use vaseline or A&D ointment before wrapping. " Not a bad idea at all. I used Neosporin, but that doesn't help with the sticking. I might give the vaseline a try next time. Thanks. "Ah, well then thats a different story. Cant even imagine with the shin guards pressed right against it...youch. " Also, wearing dress pants at work does not help at all either. My options were wrap it, or leak pus through my pants and irritate it all day.
  5. The entire thread has turned into a joke. These guys talk about standard deviations and variance, but have no idea what they are actually talking about. I have to be done with it.
  6. I have to agree, the trolling was unnecessary. It seems that most of the people on that board are well aware that the Brewers weren't stealing signs, or if they were, it was STL's fault for letting it happen. But hey, it's the Cards. Screw 'em.
  7. "According to the Cards training staff, he'll be out 3 days." After getting off the plane, they reevaluated him and said he'd be out 4-5 hours.
  8. "Fat Albert next in that order Pujols isn't even the 2nd most valuable player on his team so far by my understanding of your evaluation of players (I know you don't trust WAR or UZR). Holliday and Berkman have been better.
  9. "One NL Central contender realized they have a terrible shortstop and did something about it. The other did not." This is cryptic. Furcal has been injured a lot and hitting poorly, but has name recognition. I honestly have no idea whether you're referring to the Brewers or the Cards as having upgraded their shortstop.
  10. Remember, this is the Cardinals training staff. The same staff that got a guy back from a fracture in 15 days. I'm half expecting Furcal to hit .400 with 15 HRs and stay completely healthy, just because it's the freaking Cards.
  11. The more I look at this trade, the more I like it. We didn't give up much of a prospect (Sorry Komatsu lovers!), and we got a guy who can get on base at a reasonable clip and plays better D at 2B and SS than our current starters. I'd like to see him immediately inserted as the starting SS against RHP, and CF against LHP. I'd rather take my chances with Lopez than give Yuni any more ABs. For fun: Yunis hot July: .328 wOBA JHJ's season: .323 wOBA
  12. I had to dress it. I was playing hockey the night after.
  13. "if they offered Ryan for Maldonado I would have to think long and hard. A future backup C for a starting SS now seems worth it. " If Melvin did anything but immediately say "YES" to this trade offer, I would immediately turn against him.
  14. At my softball game on Tuesday, I slid into second and tore a 4x6 inch section of skin off the side of my leg (bad slide, my fault). I'm basically incapable of sleeping on my back, so the last several nights, I haven't been able to sleep more than a couple hours at a time. Eventually, I roll over to my left side and bam, shooting pain wakes me up. Also, non-stick gauze is definitely not non-stick. I changed the dressing on the wound today, and basically tore off all the skin that had healed. That was even with soaking it in water beforehand.
  15. I won't lie, I'll be very surprised if the Phillies don't stomp everyone on their way to winning the WS. I'm not sure the Red Sox can even compete with them now. Switching Ibanez with Pence is a 4-6 WAR a season upgrade. Yikes.
  16. Does he have another year of control as well?
  17. "I'm assuming that guys pitch them more carefully. Do you guys honestly think that pitchers aren't trying to attack the zone with a Counsell or Carroll at bat? If you walk Andrew McCutcheon, not the end of the world. You walk Craig Counsell, you are swearing to yourself. Once again, you're contradicting your own arguments. Almost everything you've said in the last couple pages has supported the position you're arguing against.
  18. "He really got outmaneuvered last night and we got stuck with Kotsay in CF. " I think the bigger problem is that he's made it clear that he doesn't see a big problem with Kotsay in CF.
  19. "If he makes three consecutive starts of 6 IP & 3 ER, his ERA is down to 4.53" Mathematically, that can't be correct. 6 IP, 3 ER is a 4.5 ERA, no way it bumps a 4.84 down to 4.53. 7 IP, 3 ER might be close to doing that, though.
  20. They may be in 2nd place, but I'm definitely rooting for them over Cards for 2 reasons: 1) The Pirates are not a threat 2) Screw the Cards
  21. I'd guess that he probably *could* play SS, but it would probably take at least a couple years before he became anything but a minus-minus defender. His upside would probably be something like a -7 UZR/150, and that's being generous. I think we should count our blessings that he ended up being an average defender at 2nd, and that took nearly 5 years.
  22. "He's not killing us yet so just keep puting him out there." Are we watching the same Brewer team?
  23. "How much money did Casey lose by not signing a longterm deal last year when Melvin wanted to lock him up?" Assuming McGehee never gets it back (I hope this isn't the case), he probably left about 20-25 mil over 4-5 years on the table. At this rate, he'll be lucky to make more than league minimum.
  24. "but he seems to have turned a corner." 45 plate appearances are enough to convince you that he's turned a corner? His overall line from the season is still pretty abysmal.
