  1. I wouldn't take Yuni back at league minimum.
  2. Dread Pirate Roenicke's Mutinous Crew
  3. "Have Wolf, Yo, Zack, and Marcum each pitch 2 innings a game with Ax closing when necessary. " Agreed. If you're capable of pitching 7-8 innings every 5 days, then you should be able to space those out over the 5 days and have no issues at all.
  4. Don't look at fielding percentage. Bad bad stat for judging defense. Green has been pretty much universally described as about average as a defender at 2B and 3B because of high effort levels. Putting him even in the same conversation as Braun at 3B is ludicrous. Braun might have been the worst defender in the history of 3B to play every day at a position.
  5. "I think Braun is stealing more bases to even his stats to make sure Kemp doesnt win MVP, not Prince... " Do you guys really think Braun is stealing bases in a bid to win MVP? If he steals a base, and they walk Prince, that's 2 guys on base! That's a good thing!
  6. "How many saves would Axford have to have at seasons' end to factor into the discussion? He's saved 32 consecutive games at this point...if he gets up to 45 in a row (which would put his season total at 49), and / or gets his ERA under 2, I suspect he'd at least draw some votes." According to an ESPN podcast, he's not even in the top 8 closers in the game.
  7. I will admit he's gotten better. I still think he's terrible, but he's not "I want to throw stuff" bad any more.
  8. "Since getting K-Rod, i very much like how Roenicke is handling the bullpen." Cherry picking your post here, but I'm pretty sure not a single person in the world could screw up the Brewer's bullpen at this point. It's 4 people who are all about the same, and starters haven't gone really any shorter than 6 innings in a month. It's the most dummy-proofed BP I've ever seen.
  9. The only way a player who isn't on a playoff team can win the MLB is if they have an absolutely outstanding year compared to everyone else. ARod did it, and Bautista is doing it now. If that person has people who are comparable in production in their league who are on playoff teams, he probably won't get the MVP.
  10. "If a stat was present to prove that point it would be used, instead people try to using dominant and convincing words to prove the point when the stats are not available or cannot be found" I may be misinterpretting your point, but it seems to come down to this: If a stat doesn't exist to measure something, then anyone who consistently uses stats in their posts when important to the context no longer holds a valid viewpoint? Or, that person's viewpoint can be dismissed as less valid than someone else who doesn't consistently use stats when they are available?
  11. Beane is still very good at identifying good pitching, especially college age pitchers (Cahill, Gonzalez, Anderson in particular). He hasn't, however, been able to develop any hitters whatsoever. Teams have wised up to overvaluing relief pitching, so he hasn't been able to sell his relievers for prospects for a while. I think that was something he did particularly well in the early 2000s. Jack Z and his group identifying hitters + Beane and Co identifying pitchers would make a team quite formidable after 5-6 seasons.
  12. "So I believe the plan is to have Grienke and Narv pitch next Monday, depending on how Chris is progressing. " Wouldn't Estrada still need to take another start to keep everyone on normal rest? It's possible by "6th starter" above, he meant someone other than Estrada or Narveson.
  13. The Rays did a really good job selling high on Young. He ended up being okay for Minnesota after a couple seasons, but he got nowhere near his potential.
  14. "Dillard? Who? I'm pretty sure you're making that up. I haven't seen anyone by the name of "Dillard" pitching for the Brewers.
  15. "logan, how many more games would we have lost if you had been manager?" According to his answer above, negative 2-3. I see what you're fishing for here, but I can already see what you're going to say. I'm going to preempt you with "don't say it, you're thinking the wrong way about it. "
  16. "It's maddening though how often he does it in the first inning when Hart leads off with a single or a walk. Does he not know that he's a solid enough hitter to not be doing that all the time?" But on that same note, I also feel that Morgan bunts for a hit a good percentage of the time as well. Anyone else, yes, the bunt is terrible, but he at least has a reasonable chance of getting on when he does it.
  17. "I am somewhat skeptical that he is now a big time power hitter" I disagree. He's so young that every year means he's going to be adding a significant chunk of power. Is he a 30 HR guy now? Probably not, but he will be next year or the year after.
  18. Stay away from Dells for sure. Other than that, HP does a decent job with their lower end models. I would keep the amount of time it's on per day to less than 4 hours if at all possible.
  19. "Baseballreference.com WAR stats" I have no idea what BR is doing to get that. Alcides has better baserunning stats, sure, but not enough to counteract the improvement in SLG for Betancourt. They must not use wOBA. Betancourt is clearly the superior hitter, but only because he can hit for more power. They get on base at about the same clip. Escobar, however, is leaps and bounds better at defense, and I would take him in any season (last year, this year, and for the rest of his career) over Betancourt. Remember, this discussion isn't about Greinke, just Escobar and Betancourt.
  20. "When a defensive stat like UZR 150 comes up with Craig Counsell is the best fielding SS in baseball this year, over 2x better than Tulo" The sample size is too small to be significant. When Morgan had as much PT in CF as CC has at SS right now, his UZR/150 was +75. The first several hundred innings are just noise. Think of it as a hitter hitting over the course of a couple of weeks. Not really indicative of their skill.
  21. "I'd rather give up a little in defense to replace a guy who was pretty much an automatic out last season. " Escobar: 2010: .233/.288/.326 *age 23 2011: .247/.283/.327 *age 24 Betancourt: 2010: .259/.288/.405 *Career year! Age 28, power prime for baseball hitters 2011: .268/.286/.391 Age 29 And the defense thing? If you honestly can look at a player like Betancourt, and a player like Escobar and say that the difference between them is "a little," I don't even know what to say. EDIT: Honest question: If you had to choose between Escobar and Betancourt for 2012, which would you choose? How about for 2012 + 2013?
  22. I can live with 1-2, but I'd really like to take the series. As long as the Brewers don't get swept, I'll be okay.
  23. "I am know starting to think he must be hurting." An injury makes sense. It's kinda like Austin Ross this year for the Brewers. Shredding low A, but starts getting rocked start after start after moving to A+. No level jump is so dramatic. Something else is at hand.
  24. wRAA is computed via wOBA, which is then used to calculate RAR. WAR is essentially (not exactly, but close enough) RAR/10. If you want a good general stat to measure a hitter's overall effectiveness, wOBA is about the best out there now.
  25. In my opinion, way way too small a sample size in AA to really judge Odorizzi. If he's still struggling through the end of the season and about 2 months into next season, then this may warrant more discussion.
