  1. I meant to yesterday but Richard-ishly forgot, thank you to Homer and SessileFielder for covering for me over the weekend. Sounds Take Three Of Four From Reno With 9-7 Victory On Wednesday 05/15/2012 2:17 PM ET Nashville Sounds NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds plated four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to record a 9-7 victory over the Reno Aces in the finale of a four-game series in front of 8,995 fans at Greer Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. Nashville (14-24) overcame two separate three-run deficits on the afternoon, initially trailing 0-3 and again at 4-7 entering the bottom of the sixth to take three of four from the Aces. Seven of the Sounds' 14 victories have come when Nashville scores the winning run in their final turn at the plate. Twenty-three of the Sounds' 38 games have been decided by one or two runs, tied with Memphis for most in the PCL. The Sounds went 7-for-11 with runners in scoring position in the game, with seven of their 13 hits coming from the 6-8 hitters in the lineup. Third baseman Andy Gonzalez led the charge with a 3-for-4 performance with two RBIs. Outfielder Corey Patterson added two hits, a double, two stolen bases, and three runs scored. Catcher Martin Maldonado had two hits including a double and RBI. Reno quickly took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Reno leadoff hitter Adam Eaton struck out, but advanced to third base on a throwing error from Maldonado. Eaton would score during the following play on a sacrifice fly from Jake Elmore. Ryan Wheeler pushed the lead to 3-0 with a two-run blast in the top of the third. After a ground-rule double to right center by Elmore, Wheeler belted his sixth homer of the season over the right wall. The Sounds got on the board in the next frame to trim the lead to 3-1. After Maldonado doubled down the left field line, Hainley Statia hit a deep sacrifice fly to center to plate the Sounds backstop. Nashville plated three runs on a couple of crazy plays to take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Patterson scored the first run after working a five-pitch walk, swiping second base, advancing to third on a throwing error from the catcher, and coming home on a fielding error from the centerfielder. Two batters later, Gonzalez tripled to right field and scored the tying run as pitcher Mark Rogers perfectly bunted between the first baseman and pitcher. Rogers moved to second on a base hit from Statia and to third on a wild pitch before coming home to score the go-ahead run on an Eric Farris sacrifice fly. The inning ended as Statia was ruled out for leaving too early while advancing to third. Reno re-took the lead at 7-4 in the next frame as David Winfree led off the frame with a double to remove Rogers from the contest. Reliever Robert Wooten entered for his Triple-A debut and gave up a game-tying RBI single to former Sound Cole Gillespie. Konrad Schmidt then gave Reno the lead on an RBI double. Victor Garate relieved Wooten and fanned two batters, but also gave up a two-run double to right field by Elmore. The Sounds scored their first of five unanswered runs in the bottom of the seventh thanks to three consecutive singles by Patterson, Gonzalez, and Maldonado. Nashville erupted for the other four runs the bottom of the eighth to take a 9-7 lead. Shortstop Jeff Bianchi was hit by a Sam Demel fastball, stole second base, and scored the first run on a Jordan Brown bouncing double down the first base line. Sean Halton followed with a single to put runners on the corners and replace Demel with Jonathan Albaladejo. Patterson followed with a game-tying RBI double down the right field line to score Brown while Gonzalez tacked on two more runs with a two-run dribbling single to center. Rogers remained winless, surrendering four runs (three earned) on four hits and three walks in five inning pitched. The 26-year-old also fanned a season-high seven batters on 85 pitches, 43 for strikes in a no-decision. Wooten was charged with two runs in a third of an inning for a blown save, while the Sounds moved to a perfect 5-0 when blowing a save this year. Garate allowed one run in 2/3 of an inning. Mike McClendon pitched a perfect inning. Johnnie Lowe (3-0) worked around two hits for a scoreless inning and the victory. With runners on first and third with one out, the Aces bunted into a double play to end the eighth and keep his scoreless streak intact. Jim Henderson earned his second save with a shutout frame and also extended his scoreless streak to 18 2/3 innings, best among PCL pitchers to open 2012 with a 0.00 ERA. Zach Kroenke gave up four runs on five hits in five innings for a no-decision. Demel (0-3) was charged with the loss on three runs. After a league-wide off day tomorrow, the Sounds embark on a nine-day, eight-game road trip at the Tucson Padres (AAA-Padres) and Las Vegas 51s (AAA-Blue Jays) of the PCL Pacific Conference Southern Division. Right-hander Wily Peralta (1-3, 3.69) will toe the rubber in Thursday's 9:05 pm CT road trip opener against Tucson right-hander Matt Palmer (3-2, 5.88). Box Score A very thick game story today. Six pitchers pitched for the Sounds led by Mark Rogers (5 IP 4 H 4 R 3 ER 3 BB 7 K 1 HR 1 HBP 5:2 GO:FO) and finished by Jim Henderson (still scoreless on the year). Johnnie Lowe also still perfect. Logan Schafer's departure is not made clear in the game story. Stay tuned. Andy Gonzalez (3-4 3B CS) is off to quite the start across two levels. Be sure to listen to his RBI single (Audio). After homering yesterday, Martin Maldonado had another 2 hits in this one. He may be working his way out of a cold spell. Corey Patterson (2-3 2B BB 2 SB) had some big hits (Audio). Caleb Gindl appeared as a pinch hitter and got a hit. The top 4 hitters in the Reno lineup and their OPS: 1. Adam Eaton .979 2. Jake Elmore .996 3. Ryan Wheeler .890 4. Randy Ruiz .975 Game Log Slightly deflating for a starting pitcher. I used to be a starting pitcher. Reno Top of the 1st Adam Eaton strikes out swinging. Adam Eaton advances to 3rd, on throwing error by catcher Martin Maldonado. Jake Elmore grounds out, shortstop Jeff Bianchi to first baseman Sean Halton. Adam Eaton scores. Ryan Wheeler flies out to center fielder Logan Schafer. Randy Ruiz grounds out, third baseman Andy Gonzalez to first baseman Sean Halton. The way the Sounds do it. Last at bat Nashville Bottom of the 8th. Pitcher Change: Sam Demel replaces Jensen Lewis, batting 3rd. Taylor Harbin remains in the game as the second baseman. Jeff Bianchi hit by pitch. With Jordan Brown batting, Jeff Bianchi steals (1) 2nd base. Jordan Brown doubles (3) on a ground ball to right fielder Cole Gillespie. Jeff Bianchi scores. Sean Halton singles on a line drive to center fielder Adam Eaton. Jordan Brown to 3rd. Defensive Substitution: Ryan Budde replaces pitcher Sam Demel, batting 3rd, playing catcher. Pitcher Change: Jonathan Albaladejo replaces Sam Demel, batting 8th. Corey Patterson doubles (5) on a line drive to right fielder Cole Gillespie. Jordan Brown scores. Sean Halton to 3rd. Andy Gonzalez singles on a ground ball to center fielder Adam Eaton. Sean Halton scores. Corey Patterson scores. With Martin Maldonado batting, Andy Gonzalez caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Ryan Budde to second baseman Taylor Harbin. Martin Maldonado flies out to right fielder Cole Gillespie. Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Caleb Gindl replaces Johnnie Lowe. Caleb Gindl singles on a ground ball to center fielder Adam Eaton. Hainley Statia strikes out swinging. Plenty more. Dive in. 2. I feel bad for Tedaldtada as when I chose Huntsville and Wisconsin as my 2 teams I was simply looking to recuse myself from the BC pitching staff, my favorite prospect was in AA, and I've always enjoyed listening to Chris. I had no idea was I going to end up bogarting the best 2 teams in the organization. Tedaldtada if you want to switch out I'll take Nashville because I still don't think it's a good idea for me to report on BC, but you can take whomever you wish from me. To be honest, I kind of have my eye on Helena. I would not mind dropping Nashville once the rookie leagues begin. I believe Young Geezy is taking the DSL. Do we have any dibs placed on the rookie league teams besides the DSL (i.e. Arizona and Helena)?
  3. Sounds Split Doubleheader With 5-1 Loss 05/14/2012 11:09 PM ET Nashville Sounds NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds lost 5-1 to the Reno Aces in the twinbill finale of a doubleheader on Monday evening at Greer Stadium. With the split, the Sounds moved to 1-3 in doubleheader action in 2012 and sport a 13-23 record, which moves the club ahead of Memphis into third place in the PCL American Northern Division. Reno struck first with three runs against starter Seth McClung in the opening frame of the nightcap. The bases were loaded with one out as Adam Eaton and Jake Elmore reached on singles, followed by a one-out walk from Mike Jacobs. David Winfree brought home the first run on a sacrifice fly while Taylor Harbin knocked a two-run triple in the ensuing at-bat. The runs scored by Reno ended a scoreless streak of nine innings leading back to the fourth inning of Saturday's rain-shortened contest. The Aces pushed the score to 4-1 in the top of the fifth as Eaton doubled and scored on an Elmore single to right field. David Winfree belted his first homer of the season to extend the Aces' lead to 5-1 in the visiting half of the sixth. The solo shot was hammered over the wall in right center. The Sounds got a run back in the next frame on Aces starter Taylor Sinclair, who made his Triple-A debut. Shortstop Jeff Bianchi reached on a run-down fielder's choice, and scored on an RBI base hit from left fielder Erick Almonte. Schafer, Bianchi, and Sean Halton recorded two hits apiece in the nightcap. Sinclair surrendered one run on four hits and a walk on 2 2/3 innings for the Aces. Reliever Mike DeMark (302) pitched 1 1/3 innings for the victory. McClung (0-4) remained winless on the year, giving up four runs on five hits on while striking out four in 4 2/3 innings. Juan Perez struck out his only two batters faced. Amaury Rivas allowed one run on one hit in 2/3 of an inning. With a scoreless inning, Jim Henderson extended his scoreless streak to 17 2/3 innings over 10 appearances to open the season, the most innings of all PCL pitchers with a 0.00 ERA. The teams will wrap up the four-game series with an 11:05 a.m. matinee on Tuesday morning at Greer Stadium, when thousands of area schoolchildren will pack the stands on Education Day as a reward for reaching their goals in the Nashville Sounds Reading Club program. (Again?) Right-hander Mark Rogers (0-2, 4.03) will start the contest for the Sounds and face Albuquerque southpaw Zach Kroenke (3-1, 5.23). Box Score Logan Schafer added 2 more hits including a 2B. Sean Halton also had 2 hits and 2B. Juan Perez was very good in this one. He is having a very good season thus far. Same with Jim Henderson. Both guys are certainly hotter than anything in the Milwaukee bullpen right now. The Sounds need to head out west to take advantage of those thin air ballparks. The hitters need it. Game Log Gameday
  4. 'Tees edged by Cubs, 2-1 05/14/2012 10:26 PM ET By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees http://www.milb.com/images/2012/05/14/2Nyb9Zsw.jpg Manatees starting pitcher and 2011 first round draft pick Jed Bradley went just 3 1/3 innings as he left the game with an apparent groin injury on Monday night. Brevard County lost their fifth game in a row falling 2-1 to the Daytona Cubs. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees lost their fifth game in row as they were defeated by the Daytona Cubs, 2-1 on Monday night at Space Coast Stadium. After a 5-1 start to the season, the 'Tees have gone 9-21 since. Manatees starting pitcher and Brewers 2011 first round draft pick Jed Bradley (4-3, 3.53) went just 3 1/3 innings as he left the game with an apparent groin injury. He allowed two runs on three hits, while walking two and not recording a strikeout. The two runs scored on Bradley in the first inning were all that the Cubs needed as Nelson Perez hit a two-run single with two outs in the frame. The Manatees (14-22) got one run back in the bottom of the inning as Cody Hawn plated Reggie Keen with a RBI single. The scoring by both teams in the first inning would be all for the game as pitching dominated the rest of the way. After Bradley's early exit, Brevard County's bullpen held Daytona (14-23) scoreless for 5 2/3 innings. Brian Garman came out of the pen first for the 'Tees and threw 2 2/3 innings while allowing just one hit and striking out four. Eric Arnett, Stosh Wawrzasek and Eric Marzec threw a scoreless inning each against the Cubs. The Manatees had their chances offensively as they outhit the Cubs 7-5, but Brevard went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. Both Hawn and Mike Walker had two hits each in the Manatees' loss. During their current five game losing streak, Brevard County has scored just eight runs and is hitting just .192 as a team. Brevard County and Daytona will be back in action on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. for the second game of this three-game set. Brooks Hall (0-1, 1.98) will get the start for the Manatees as he replaces the recently promoted Hiram Burgos in the rotation. In his first start of the season last Thursday against Palm Beach, he went five innings and allowed one run, while striking out five. The Cubs will send Matt Loosen (1-1, 5.54) to the hill. Loosen faced the 'Tees on opening night and allowed three runs on one hit and four walks in 1/3 of an inning. Box Score So this game should have been called after the first inning. The final score would have been the same and our prized young southpaw with the slippery slider wouldn't have hurt his groin. Starter Jed Bradley almost escaped the 1st inning, but a key two-out 2-run knock proved to be the game winner. In case you missed it, Bradley left in the 3rd inning with a groin injury. I'm glad the injury is a lower half thing. He did post a 7:1 GO:FO. The relievers were spectacular allowing only 1 hit the rest of the way. T.J. Mittelstaedt (0-2 2 BB SB) has been struggling. 45 K's in 126 AB's for Brevard's best hitter. Mike Walker and Nick Shaw have identical, but not really, .704 OPS. Game Log I think the run-scoring single was actually with 1-out, no? Daytona Top of the 1st Arismendy Alcantara singles on a line drive to center fielder Reggie Keen. With Ronald Torreyes batting, Arismendy Alcantara steals (9) 2nd base. Ronald Torreyes walks. Rubi Silva pops out to pitcher Jed Bradley. Greg Rohan walks. Arismendy Alcantara to 3rd. Ronald Torreyes to 2nd. Nelson Perez singles on a ground ball to right fielder Franklin Romero Jr. Arismendy Alcantara scores. Ronald Torreyes scores. Greg Rohan out at 3rd on the throw, right fielder Franklin Romero Jr. to third baseman Michael Walker. Nelson Perez to 2nd on the throw. John Andreoli grounds out, shortstop Nick Shaw to first baseman Cody Hawn.
  5. Fiers Tosses Three-Hit Shutout In Twinbill Opener 05/14/2012 8:05 PM ET Nashville Sounds NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Right-hander Mike Fiers tossed a three-hit, seven-inning shutout to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 5-0 victory over the Reno Aces in the first game of a doubleheader on Monday evening at Greer Stadium. Fiers (1-2) picked up his first victory of the season with the gem, which was his second career shutout. His first, a nine-inning three-hitter, came last August 31 for the Sounds at Iowa. The right-hander walked two batters, hit a pair of batters, and struck out five during his 96-pitch effort. Logan Schafer and Eric Farris each recorded three hits and Martin Maldonado belted a homer to pace the Sounds' 13-hit attack. Nashville finished 5-for-10 with runners in scoring position in the contest. The Sounds squandered a no-outs, bases-loaded opportunity in the bottom of the first inning against Reno starter Charles Brewer. Schafer, Farris, and Jeff Bianchi started the frame with three consecutive singles to fill the bags against the right-hander. Brewer induced a comebacker from Jordan Brown and forced Schafer at the plate for the first out. Erick Almonte followed with a line drive to right, which was gloved by ex-Sound Cole Gillespie who then fired to the plate to nail Farris for the final out as he attempted to score on the play. Nashville took a 3-0 lead in the third against Brewer. Fiers led off with a double into the left field corner and later scored on a bloop RBI single off the bat of Eric Farris, which fell just in front of the glove of a diving Adam Eaton in center field. Later in the frame, Brown and Almonte (Audio) legged out back-to-back, two-out run-scoring doubles to increase the Sounds' advantage to three. Maldonado upped the lead to 4-0 in the fourth when he belted his third homer of the season, a one-out solo shot to left-center that careened off the guitar-shaped scoreboard. The blast snapped a 20 at-bat hitless stretch for the backstop. Farris concluded the Sounds' scoring in the sixth inning with a two-out RBI single that plated Schafer, who had singled with two outs, stole second, and moved to third on a wild pitch. Brewer (1-3) took the loss after working all six innings for Reno, giving up five runs on 13 hits. Box Score On the day of a double header, Mike Fiers (96 pitches, 59 strikes) was a pitching coach's dream as he went the distance. 7 IP 3 H 0 R 2 BB 5 K 1 WP 2 HBP 9:3 GO:FO. Mike also hit a big 2B to help his own cause. Fiers is fully stretched out at this point and ready to compete for a rotation spot next year. I have said before that he could thrive in a Marco Estrada kind of role. Basically, Fiers is a good 6th starter with the ability to fill a rotation spot adequately. Former Brewers farmhand Cole Gillespie had two of the three hits for the Reno Aces. The bats were relentless and should have been more potent. 13 hits including 6 between the top two hitters in the lineup and another 5 from the 3-5 hitters. Logan Schafer (3-3 BB SB PO) was magnificent. Eric Farris, who has 2 XBH's in well over 100 PA's (both doubles), also had 3 hits. Martin Maldonado dented a guitar. Caleb Gindl received Game 1 off. Game Log Whoops. Nashville Bottom of the 1st Logan Schafer singles on a ground ball to left fielder Ryan Wheeler. Eric Farris singles on a line drive to left fielder Ryan Wheeler. Logan Schafer to 2nd. Jeff Bianchi singles on a ground ball to left fielder Ryan Wheeler. Logan Schafer to 3rd. Eric Farris to 2nd. Jordan Brown grounds into a force out, pitcher Charles Brewer to catcher Konrad Schmidt. Logan Schafer out at home. Eric Farris to 3rd. Jeff Bianchi to 2nd. Jordan Brown to 1st. Erick Almonte lines into double play, right fielder Cole Gillespie to catcher Konrad Schmidt. Eric Farris out at home on the throw. Game MVP lead off double. Nashville Bottom of the 3rd Michael Fiers doubles (2) on a line drive to left fielder Ryan Wheeler. Logan Schafer singles on a line drive to right fielder Cole Gillespie. Michael Fiers to 3rd. With Eric Farris batting, Charles Brewer picks off Logan Schafer at 1st on throw to Randy Ruiz. Eric Farris singles on a fly ball to center fielder Adam Eaton. Michael Fiers scores. Jeff Bianchi flies out to right fielder Cole Gillespie. Jordan Brown doubles (2) on a line drive to left fielder Ryan Wheeler. Eric Farris scores. Erick Almonte doubles (3) on a line drive to center fielder Adam Eaton. Jordan Brown scores. Corey Patterson grounds out, first baseman Randy Ruiz to pitcher Charles Brewer. Amazingly, this was his only clean inning. Reno Top of the 7th Rusty Ryal flies out to right fielder Jordan Brown. Konrad Schmidt strikes out swinging, catcher Martin Maldonado to first baseman Erick Almonte. Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Mike Jacobs replaces Charles Brewer. Mike Jacobs strikes out swinging. Gameday
  6. You have a case, but it is still Peralta in my book. Similar stuff, results and age with Wily at a higher level and some modest big league success.
  7. Hiram, you will be starting. I think you earned it.
  8. I'm back for today's AAA game. That trip really snuck up on me and I am sorry to have left the game write up slots vacant on such short notice.
  9. Nashville 4 Colorado Springs (Rockies) 3 Box Score Walk off at Greer! Corey Patterson, who did not start in the game, singled in Eric Farris. Mark Rogers is still dealing with his old skeletons. It really should be expected though, he did basically miss all of last season. Look for Mark to take small steps. Johnnie Lowe came in held them. Mike McClendon blew the ninth inning save. Is there no one else Nashville can turn to? Caleb Gindl left the game early after a fly out with the hero Patterson replacing him. Martin Madonaldo committed an error and picked off a runner while allowing 1 of 2 steal attempts to be successful. Game Log Eric Farris made this happen. Nashville Bottom of the 9th Pitcher Change: Edgmer Escalona replaces Josh Outman, batting 9th. Hainley Statia grounds out, pitcher Edgmer Escalona to first baseman Chad Tracy. Eric Farris singles on a fly ball to center fielder Brandon Roberts. With Martin Maldonado batting, Eric Farris steals (9) 2nd base. Martin Maldonado grounds out, second baseman DJ LeMahieu to first baseman Chad Tracy. Eric Farris to 3rd. Corey Patterson singles on a bunt ground ball to second baseman DJ LeMahieu. Eric Farris scores.. Gameday
  10. So, I am going up Nort (not a misspell) this weekend. Can someone cover for me the next two nights?
  11. St. Lucie (Mets) 4 Brevard County 3 Box Score The Manatees almost came back, but it was not to be. Brooks Hall started and was pretty fantastic. 5 IP 3 H 1 R 1 ER 1 BB 5 K 3:5 GO:FO. Could this be the jump in stuff we have been hoping for? 13 K in 13.2 IP for Brooks. Brandon Williamson followed and was not his best. The homer he gave up in the 9th was the difference. The Mets' 1-3 hitters were 0-12, including Greg's son, Cory Vaughn. T.J. Mittelstaedt (2-4) hit a homer, his 3rd, and stole a base. Nick Shaw got back on track with two hits including a 2B. Lots of missed chances for the 'Tees. Game Log
  12. Goforth just flashed a plus curve ball on the outside corner to K a Quad Cities hitter looking. And another for strike one to the next batter.
  13. Chris Mehring is going to move up quick in this business. Fantastic TV spot with Max Walla tonight.
  14. This something Melvin would not do unless completely forced by injury. I could see guys like McClung and Baker getting the call first, and that is assuming Fiers and Peralta have been tried. What you suggest is aggressive and I like that. I would prefer he makes some starts in the high minors first though. I would endorse a straight promotion to Nashville. Burgos should at least be on the 2010 Josh Butler schedule.
  15. Six-Run, 8th Inning Rally Drops Sky Sox, 6-2 05/09/2012 3:00 PM ET Nashville, TN - The Nashville Sounds rallied for six runs in the eighth inning as they came from behind to beat the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 6-2 on Wednesday afternoon at Herschel Greer Stadium. The Sounds' victory evens the four-game series at a game each. Both teams struggled to generate offense early as starters Guillermo Moscoso and Seth McClung each held the other scoreless through six innings. Moscoso, the Sox starter, gave up a double in the first and second innings but that was it for the day as he stymied the Nashville hitters. In his six innings of work Moscoso walked none and struck out three in his first start since being optioned down by the Rockies. In the seventh, the Sky Sox would break through against the Sounds bullpen as they plated two runs on a one-out, bases load double by outfielder Hernan Iribarren. Moscoso was pinch-hit for in the inning despite having thrown just 76 pitches but it paid off as the Sox took the 2-0 lead. In the Nashville half of the inning, Sox righty Mike Ekstrom came on in relief and had a quick 1-2-3 inning and in the process set a Colorado Springs record. The three outs gave him 19.1 scoreless innings to start the season which broke lefty Matt Reynolds' record of 18.2 innings to start the 2009 season. Ekstrom stayed on in the 8th but his record streak would come to an end. The Sounds started the inning with three straight singles to plate a run and chase Ekstrom. Dustin Molleken came on to try and stop the rally but Nashville kept pouring it on as they scored five more runs in the inning with the final blow coming off the bat of Jordan Brown who smacked a wind-aided, three-run homer to left. The hits in the inning were the first of the game for the Sounds since the second inning. The six-run rally made a winner of Amaury Rivas (2-1, 3.86)) who worked a scoreless eighth for Nashville. Ekstrom (1-1, 1.40) picked up his first loss of the season giving up three runs. Game three of the four-game series is set for tomorrow night at 6:05 PM (MDT) with the Sox sending out RH Rob Scahill (3-3, 6.00) to face RH Mark Rogers (0-2, 4.15).
  16. Six-Run Eighth Inning Gives Sounds 6-2 Victory Over Colorado Springs 05/09/2012 3:28 PM ET Nashville Sounds NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds beat the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, 6-2, thanks to a six-run eighth inning in front of a season-high 9,180 screaming kids at Greer Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. The six runs scored in the home half of the eighth was the most scored by Nashville (10-22) in an inning this season, and also gave the club its fifth last at-bat victory. In a no-decision, Sounds starter Seth McClung authored his best pitching performance of the season against the Sky Sox. The 31-year old gave up two hits and walked three while striking out six over six innings of shutout ball. McClung allowed a single to former Sound Hernan Iribarren followed by a walk to DJ LeMahieu to open the contest, then sat down the next 13 straight Sky Sox hitters. The 13 consecutive hitters retired set a new Sounds season high by a pitcher, one more than Wily Perlta sat down On Opening Night on April 5 at New Orleans. Colorado Springs starter Guillermo Moscoso matched McClung by holding the Sounds to two hits through six innings, both doubles to Corey Patterson and Sean Halton. Colorado Springs broke through to score its only runs in the top of the seventh. Left-hander Dan Meadows entered the game in relief of McClung and walked the only two batters he faced on nine pitches. Donovan Hand intentionally walked pinch hitter Brandon Wood to load the bases and face Iribarren, who crushed a two-run double off the base of the left field wall. Nashville batted around for the first time this season to plated all six runs in the bottom of the eighth. Second baseman Eric Farris led off with a base hit to stop a string of 16 Sounds retired in a row by Moscoso and reliever Mike Ekstrom. Farris stole second on his team-leading 8th swipe, advanced to third on a Halton single, and scored on a Paul Phillips RBI single. After pinch hitter Hainley Statia hit a bunt single to load the bases with no outs, center fielder Caleb Gindl brought home the tying run on a sacrifice fly to center. In the ensuing at-bat, shortstop Jeff Bianchi hit a soft infielder dribbler (Audio) past Ekstrom (1-1) to score Phillips for the go-ahead run. With runners on first and third, outfielder Jordan Brown then hit his first homer of the season (Audio), a wind-aided, three-run shot over the left field wall off reliever Dustin Molleken. Hand pitched a scoreless inning, but allowed both inherited runners to score. Rivas (2-1) earned the victory with a shutout inning. Jim Henderson finished the game without a shutout ninth, extending his shutout streak to a team-leading 16 2/3 innings over nine outings. The Sounds and Sky Sox continue their series at 7:05pm CT on Taco Bell Throwback Thursday at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Mark Rogers (0-2, 4.15) will take the mound against Colorado Springs Rob Scahill (3-3, 6.00). Box Score Dude, how fun must that have been for those kids? If you ever get the chance to take a kid to a game, do it. A 6-run bottom of the 8th to win it for the Sounds. Jeff Bianchi (1-4) hit it where they weren't for the go ahead run and Jordan Brown (1-4 HR) wall scraped a three-run two-out bomb in the 8th. Seth McClung, with six scoreless, made me look like a jerk for my sarcastic remark yesterday. Well done, Big Red. Amaury Rivas was the benefactor of the offensive explosion as he squeezed out a W with a scoreless inning of work. Jim Henderson is still MR. 0.00. Logan Schafer did not start, but he did PH. Caleb Gindl is searching for answers still. Game Log Wall-o-text Nashville Bottom of the 8th Eric Farris singles on a ground ball to left fielder Andrew Brown. With Sean Halton batting, Eric Farris steals (8) 2nd base. Sean Halton singles on a ground ball to left fielder Andrew Brown. Eric Farris to 3rd. Paul Phillips singles on a line drive to right fielder Hernan Iribarren. Eric Farris scores. Sean Halton to 2nd. Defensive switch from right field to center field for Hernan Iribarren. Defensive switch from first base to right field for Matt McBride. Pitcher Change: Dustin Molleken replaces Mike Ekstrom, batting 7th. Defensive Substitution: Chad Tracy replaces pitcher Mike Ekstrom, batting 9th, playing first base. Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Hainley Statia replaces Amaury Rivas. Hainley Statia singles on a bunt ground ball to pitcher Dustin Molleken. Sean Halton to 3rd. Paul Phillips to 2nd. Corey Patterson flies out to left fielder Andrew Brown. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) VIERA, Fla. - A ten strikeout performance by 'Tees starting pitcher Hiram Burgos wasn't enough for Brevard County as the Manatees fell 4-2 on Wednesday afternoon at Space Coast Stadium to the St. Lucie Mets. Burgos, who came into the game leading the Florida State League in both ERA and WHIP, allowed two runs - one earned - in seven innings of work. He allowed three hits and walked one, while striking out ten St. Lucie hitters. Burgos' (2-1, 0.87) ten strikeouts tied a career-high that he first achieved on July 12, 2010 while with the Helena Brewers against the Billings Mustangs. The Manatees (14-19) gave Burgos run support early as they scored two runs in the first three innings off of St. Lucie's starter, Jenrry Mejia, who was making his first rehab appearance since having Tommy John surgery last season. Both Brevard County runs were driven in by Cody Hawn, who singled home Reggie Keen with a RBI single in the first and scored Keen again in the third on a sacrifice fly to left. The runs off of Mejia were all that the 'Tees would get as Angel Cuan piggybacked Mejia and threw three scoreless innings and former Manatee Adrian Rosario shut the door on his former squad in the ninth to earn his ninth save of the season. Brandon Kintzler drew the loss for Brevard as St. Lucie (26-7) scored the go-ahead run on him in the eighth, as Kintzler allowed two hits and two walks in the frame. Offensively, the 'Tees managed just five hits and went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Nick Shaw went 0-for-3 snapping his streak of reaching base in consecutive games at 24. Brevard County and St. Lucie will face-off on Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. for the third game of their four-game set. For the Manatees, it will be Brooks Hall (!) (0-1, 2.08) getting his first start of the season. Hall spent the first two weeks of the season on the disabled list and has made three relief appearances since being activated off the DL on April 22. He will be piggybacked by Brandon Williamson (0-1, 4.85). For St. Lucie, they are expected to send 2007 Major League All-Star Chris Young to the mound. The 32-year-old righty signed a minor league contract with the Mets in the offseason and is recovering from a torn anterior capsule in his shoulder. Young has started 139 games in eight big league season and at six feet ten inches tall, stands as one of the tallest players in baseball history. He is a former Manatee as he went 5-2 with a 1.62 ERA in eight starts back in 2003 when Brevard County was affiliated with the Montreal Expos. Box Score So what are the possible reasons that Burgos has been this good? 1. He is taking advantage of much weaker competition as he repeats the FSL. 2. Nothing is different, he is just in the zone as they say. 3. Something is different with his repertoire. Either his stuff has improved or his already plus command and control has taken another step forward. 4. Last year was the outlier. He was injured or ineffective and because of that he unperformed. Am I missing any? It is probably a mixture of all of them. Final line tonight: 7 IP 3 H 2 R 1 ER 1 BB 10 K 1 HR Balk 6:3 GO:FO Brandon Kinzler and perpetual Moniker Madness entrant Stosh Wawrzasek could not keep it tied and that is a bad thing with this offense. Nick Shaw's meaningless streak is over at 24. Game Log Four perfect innings for Burgos (1, 5, 6, and 7) An old friend. Brevard County Bottom of the 9th Pitcher Change: Adrian Rosario replaces Angel Cuan. Cody Hawn walks. With Shawn Zarraga batting, Cody Hawn advances to 2nd on a balk. Shawn Zarraga flies out to center fielder Cesar Puello. Michael Walker strikes out swinging. Shea Vucinich called out on strikes.
  19. Loving Heckathorn's start today. If anything, he is viable trade bait now.
  20. What is the deal with Burgos? This is the hottest I have ever seen a Brewers pitcher.
  21. LeMahieu Triple Gives Sox 7-4 Over Nashville 05/08/2012 10:52 PM ET DJ LeMahieu hit a two-out, three-run triple in the top of the 9th inning to break a 4-4 tie as the Colorado Springs Sky Sox defeated the Nashville Sounds by the score of 7-4 on Tuesday night. The win gets the Sox off to a great start as they begin an eight-game road trip in Tennessee. Colorado Springs got out to an early 3-0 lead in the third inning on RBI hits by Hernan Iribarren, LeMahieu and Andrew Brown but the Sounds struck right back in the bottom half of the inning with two runs of their own. The Sounds' runs came on a solo homer by Logan Schafer and a RBI double by Jeff Bianchi. Shortstopp Tommy Field blasted his third homer of the season in the fourth, a solo bomb, to give the Sox a 4-2 lead before Nasvhille chipped away to tie the game. They put up lone tallies in the fifth and the seventh innings to set up the heriocs in the 9th. In the top of the 9th, two hits, a sac bunt and a walk against reliever Mike McClendon (1-2) loaded the bases for the Sky Sox with one out before Juan Perez came on and struck out Iribarren to bring LeMahieu to the plate. On the first pitch of the at bat, LeMahieu drilled the ball to the left-center field gap to chase everyone one and give the Sox their 7-4 lead. Sox closer Zach Putnam worked a perfect ninth inning while striking out two batters to notch his fifth save of the season and make a winner of reliever Dustin Molleken (2-0). Game two of the four-game series is set for 11:05 AM (CST) tomorrow with RH Guillermo Moscoso (1-3, 7.91) facing RH Seth McClung (0-3, 7.71).
  22. Sounds Lose Series Opener To Sky Sox, 7-4 05/08/2012 10:50 PM ET Nashville Sounds NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Second baseman DJ LeMahieu ripped a bases-loaded triple with two outs in top of the ninth inning to power the Colorado Springs Sky Sox to a 7-4 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Tuesday evening at Greer Stadium. LeMahieu's game-winning three-bagger, which caromed off the top of the wall in left-center, came against Sounds left-hander Juan Perez, who inherited the bases-loaded jam from Mike McClendon. The Sky Sox filled the bags against the right-hander on a pair of singles sandwiched around an intentional walk. Nashville (9-22) fell to 1-8 in series openers this season and has dropped five of its last six contests overall. Logan Schafer homered and drove in two of the Sounds' four runs on the night, while shortstop Jeff Bianchi went 3-for-4 on the night and has opened his Nashville career with five hits in his first seven at-bats. The visiting Sky Sox took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning against Nashville starter Mike Fiers. Ex-Sound Wil Nieves got things started with a leadoff double and scored on a one-out double off the bat of another former Sound, Hernan Iribarren. LeMahieu (2-for-4) followed with an RBI single up the middle that extended the Sky Sox lead to two. Later in the frame, Andrew Brown ripped a two-out, run-scoring double to right-center to make it a three-run advantage. The Sounds responded in the home half of the frame, pulling back within a run with a pair of two-out scores against Sky Sox right-hander Brandon Hynick. After the first two batters of the inning were retired, Schafer crushed his third home run of the year, a solo shot to right, to put Nashville on the board. Caleb Gindl kept the rally going with a line-drive double down the right field line and scored on an RBI single from Bianchi to make it a 3-2 contest. Colorado Springs shortstop Tommy Field increased the visitors' lead to 4-2 in the fourth when he slugged a one-out solo homer to left off Fiers, his third roundtripper of the year. Fiers helped his own cause in the fifth, ripping a leadoff double and later scoring on Bianchi's third knock of the contest, a two-out single to left. Fiers' two-bagger in the frame was the first extra-base hit recorded by a Nashville pitcher this season. Nashville tied the game at 4-4 in the seventh against Sky Sox reliever Edgmer Escalona. Eric Farris led off with a single, moved to third on a well-executed, hit-and-run single by pinch-hitter Hainley Statia, and scored the tying run on a bunt single by Schafer. The Sounds missed a chance to pull ahead in the eighth when they put runners on second and third with two outs against Dustin Molleken, but the right-hander struck out Martin Maldonado to escape the jam unscathed. Molleken (2-0) was the recipient of the late Sky Sox rally and was awarded the victory following one scoreless inning of relief. Zach Putnam retired the Sounds in order in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the win and notch his fifth save of the year. McClendon (1-2) was saddled with the loss for Nashville after being charged with three runs in his two-thirds of an inning of action. The teams continue the series with an 11:05 a.m. Education Day game on Wednesday morning at Greer, when thousands of area schoolchildren will pack the stands as a reward for reach their goals in the popular Nashville Sounds Reading Club program. Right-hander Seth McClung (0-3, 7.71) (sorry kids) will toe the rubber for the Sounds to face Colorado Springs right-hander Guillermo Moscoso (1-3, 7.91). 23. 'Tees edge first place Mets 05/08/2012 10:22 PM ET By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees ended their three-game losing streak by edging out the top team in the Florida State League, the St. Lucie Mets on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium. The 'Tees won 3-2 and handed the Mets just their seventh loss of the season. In a match-up of the FSL's two best pitching staffs, it was the Manatees (14-18) who came out on top as Brevard County pitching recorded 13 strikeouts on the night. Southpaw Jed Bradley (4-2, 3.38) earned the win as he went five innings and allowed two runs on five hits. He walked four and fanned four. Brevard County's offense gave Bradley and the pitching staff all the run support they would need in the fourth inning as the Manatees plated three runs. With two outs in the inning, Mike Walker and Shea Vucinich reached on back-to-back singles. Scott Krieger then drew a walk to load the bases. Adam Weisenburger and Franklin Romero Jr. then came up and hit consecutive RBI singles with Weisenburger's plating one and Romero Jr.'s bringing home two. After Bradley exited the game, the 'Tees bullpen took care of the rest as they combined to throw four shutout innings and allow three hits. Alan Williams did the most damage out of the pen as in his two innings of work all six outs that he recorded came via the strikeout. Williams and Brian Garman each earned a hold, while Casey Medlen shut the door to earn his sixth save of the season. Shea Vucinich had the only multi-hit effort of the night as he went 2-for-3 and has now reached base in 14 consecutive games. After hitting just .178 in April, Vucinich is hitting at a .357 in the month of May. Nick Shaw went 1-for-4 and has now reached base in 24 straight games. Brevard County and St. Lucie (25-7) will continue their four-game series on Wednesday with a matinee beginning at 10:35 a.m. The Florida State League leader in ERA and WHIP, Hiram Burgos (2-1, 0.79) will toe the rubber for the 'Tees on Wednesday morning. Burgos has allowed just one run in his last 25 innings of work and has not allowed a run in either of his last two starts. The Mets will send Jenrry Mejia to the mound to start the game and he will be "piggybacked" by Angel Cuan (2-1, 3.14). Mejia is on a Major League rehab assignment as he recovers from Tommy John surgery that he had last season. Box Score Jed Bradley started and was good enough to earn a win, but it was not easy for him. 5 IP 5 H 2 R 2 ER 4 BB 4 K 1 WP 1 Balk 4:4 GO:FO 1 Pickoff. Hopefully Jungmann and Bradley are not 2011 class afterthoughts in the end, but their upside is not close to some of these other guys. Be sure to see the game log section to see what Alan Williams did tonight. The offense did enough to win as Shea Vucinich (2-3) stays hot. Nick Shaw (1-4) continues his streak as well. 24. Nashville Loses Series Finale In Albuquerque, 8-3 05/07/2012 5:38 PM ET Nashville Sounds ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Nashville Sounds dropped an 8-3 series finale to the Albuquerque Isotopes on Monday afternoon at Isotopes Park. With the loss, Nashville lost three of four in the series and moved to a PCL worst 9-21 on the season, which matches last year's Sounds club. With a 3-1 lead entering the fourth inning, Albuquerque scored seven unanswered runs to win and take the series. Second baseman Hainley Statia (2-for-4) doubled while driving in all three runs. Shortstop Jeff Bianchi and outfielders Corey Patterson and Jordan Brown each added two hits. The Sounds took an early 2-0 lead in the opening frame against Albuquerque starter Mike Parisi as Bianchi worked a two-out walk and moved to third as Brown singled to right field. After an Andy Gonzalez walk to load the bases, second Statia knocked a two-run single (Audio) to right. Albuquerque cut the lead in half in the home half of the first as Isotopes leadoff hitter Elian Herrera doubled and scored on a Scott Van Slyke RBI base hit. Parisi departed the contest after a couple of warm-up pitches due to a non-disclosed injury to begin the third. Bianchi and Statia (Audio) got in on the action again in the third on new pitcher Cole St. Clair, as both middle infielders doubled in the inning to push the Nashville lead to 3-1. Bianchi's double was the first Triple-A hit of his career in his first at-bat for the Sounds after the 25-year-old had a sacrifice fly and walked in his first two plate appearances. Three consecutive walks by Nashville starting pitcher Brian Baker, followed by two straight sacrifice flies knotted the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Former Sound Luis Cruz then gave Albuquerque its first lead at 4-3 with a go-ahead RBI double later in the frame. Cruz later hit a three-run bomb in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend Albuquerque's lead to 7-3. After two singles and a coaching visit to the mound by pitching coach Fred Dabney, reliever Amaury Rivas surrendered Cruz's third homer on the year on a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall. Former Sounds Trent Oeltjen scored Albuquerque's final run on a sacrifice fly in the following frame. Baker (1-2) gave up four runs on five hits and a season-high four walks in 4 1/3 innings pitched for the loss. Rivas allowed a season-high four runs on four hits in 1 1/3 innings. Right-hander Johnnie Lowe pitched two scoreless frames to end the game while allowing one of two inherited runners to score. The 27-year-old has yet to surrender a run through his first 10 1/3 innings. St. Clair (1-0) picked up the victory after giving up one run on in four innings of work in relief. The Sounds return to Music City tomorrow to open an eight-game homestand against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (AAA-Rockies) and Reno Aces (AAA-Diamondbacks) of the Pacific Coast League Northern Division. Right-hander Mike Fiers (0-2, 3.99) will toe the rubber for Nashville in the opener against Colorado Springs righty Brandon Hynick (0-1, 8.31). Box Score I want the affiliates to win everyday, but if I was being honest, I would admit that the reason I am here is to follow the major league caliber prospects. This Nashville team is sorely lacking right now. Logan Schafer (1-5 2B) is certainly on the list, as is Caleb Gindl (0-1 K as a PH). That is pretty much it for higher level types. Sean Halton (0-3 BB) and Eric Farris (0-1 as a PH) are worth a box score peek. (sigh) The pitching side is surely just as bad. Wily Peralta and Mike Fiers (tomorrows SP) are worthy follows. So are Jim Henderson and Amaury Rivas (1 2/3 IP 4 ER). Not much else exciting unfortunately. Maybe some mid-season promotions will kick start the lineup and my interest level. Game Log A promising start. Nashville Top of the 1st Logan Schafer grounds out, second baseman Elian Herrera to first baseman Jeff Baisley. Corey Patterson singles on a line drive to right fielder Scott Van Slyke. With Jeff Bianchi batting, Corey Patterson caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Tim Federowicz to second baseman Elian Herrera. Jeff Bianchi walks. Jordan Brown singles on a ground ball to right fielder Scott Van Slyke. Jeff Bianchi to 3rd. Andy Gonzalez walks. Jordan Brown to 2nd. Hainley Statia singles on a ground ball to right fielder Scott Van Slyke. Jeff Bianchi scores. Jordan Brown scores. Andy Gonzalez to 3rd. Sean Halton called out on strikes. A terrible start (to the inning). Albuquerque Bottom of the 4th Josh Fields walks. Scott Van Slyke walks. Josh Fields to 2nd. Jeff Baisley walks. Josh Fields to 3rd. Scott Van Slyke to 2nd. Jerry Sands out on a sacrifice fly to center fielder Logan Schafer. Josh Fields scores. Tim Federowicz out on a sacrifice fly to right fielder Corey Patterson. Scott Van Slyke scores. 25. Cardinals Knock Off Manatees, 6-2 05/07/2012 2:17 PM ET By Juan Dorado/ Palm Beach Cardinals The Palm Beach Cardinals (16-15) would not need extra innings in today's morning affair with the Brevard County Manatees (13-18), as they got of the gate early for the 6-2 victory. Starter Carlos Martinez (2-1) was on top of his game morning, as the right-hander went a season-high seven innings, scattering three hits for one run. His longest outing of the season earned his second victory. Offensively, the Cardinals got on the board early, as Chris Edmondson doubled to bring in Mike O'Neill, who reached base on a lead off single. O'Neill got the rally going in the third, as he singled to start off the inning. Ronny Gil was hit by the next pitch. Starlin Rodriguez bunted both players over, but Jimmy Nelson's throw sailed over the third baseman head and brought both runs in. Rainel Rosario capped the scoring as he singled to bring in Rodriguez. The Cardinals tacked on one more in the fourth on an RBI single by Gil and one in the seventh on RBI double by Jonathan Rodriguez. Rodriguez' double was his third hit of the game and his third double. The Manatees tried to rally late, as they got the first two batters on in the eighth, but Aidan Lucas settled down to keep the Manatees from getting any closer. Chase Reid pitched a scoreless ninth to end the game. On the day, Jonathan Rodriguez led the Cardinals with a 3-for-4 day, while Mike O'Neill added three hits and two runs. The Cardinals finished a successful home stand, as they went 5-2 and now will hit the road for four games against the Lakeland Flying Tigers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. as Seth Maness goes for his fourth win of the season.
