Sounds Lose To RedHawks In Twinbill Opener, 4-3 04/19/2012 7:18 PM ET Nashville Sounds NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds suffered their third consecutive loss on Thursday evening at Greer Stadium, falling to the Oklahoma City RedHawks, 4-3, in game one of a doubleheader. The Sounds (4-10) trailed the entire way for the second straight game against the 'Hawks, falling to 1-5 against them this season. Oklahoma City took a 1-0 lead against Sounds starter Josh Butler in the top of the first inning. Brian Bixler (3-for-4) led off the contest with a line-drive double into the left field corner and later scored on Scott Moore's two-out single to center. The RedHawks added to their advantage in the third. After Oklahoma City loaded the bases with one out on a pair of walks sandwiched around a Bixler single, Moore drew a walk from Butler to force home pitcher Jordan Lyles and Justin Ruggiano lifted a sacrifice fly to deep center to make it a 3-0 contest. The Sounds got onto the board in the home half of the third, pulling within a run at 3-2 against Lyles. With one out, Edwin Maysonet singled and moved to third on a Brooks Conrad double. Taylor Green followed with an RBI groundout to plate Maysonet with the first Nashville run before Sean Halton ripped a run-scoring single to right to draw the Sounds within one. Nashville right fielder Corey Patterson kept it a one-run deficit in the top of the fifth when he robbed a two-run homer from Ruggiano with a leaping catch at the right field wall. Butler (0-3) took a loss in his third straight start to open the year. The right-hander allowed three runs on five hits in his five innings of work, walking four batters and striking out three. The RedHawks tacked on an insurance run in the sixth against left-hander Daniel Meadows when Brad Snyder blooped a one-out double down the right field line and scored when Landon Powell followed with a single. The Sounds pulled back within a run at 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth when Eric Farris doubled and scored on pinch-hitter extraordinaire Erick Almonte's two-out RBI single to right, which chased Lyles from the contest. Lyles (3-0) notched his third consecutive winning start for the RedHawks, holding the Sounds to three runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 frames. Xavier Cedeno worked around a pair of ninth-inning baserunners to nail down his first save of the year, striking out pinch-hitter Martin Maldonado looking to end the contest. Farris went 2-for-3 for the Sounds to extend his hitting streak to six games, matching the longest effort by a Sounds player this season. Box Score Logan Schafer (2-4 2 K), Brooks Conrad (2-3 2B BB), Sean Halton (1-2 BB HBP) and Eric Farris (2-3 2B) all had solid games. Most of the damage came off of Astros top prospect Jordan Lyles. Not much else here beside the nugget about Erick Almonte above. Josh Butler started but was not effective. Same for next man up Dan Meadows. Amaury Rivas entered and pitched another scoreless inning in relief. That is 4 straight scoreless appearances and 6 for 7 overall for Amaury. He could likely be effective in a Marco Estrada kind of way, no? Game Log They had a chance at the end. Nashville Bottom of the 7th Edwin Maysonet flies out to center fielder Justin Ruggiano. Brooks Conrad singles on a ground ball to center fielder Justin Ruggiano. Taylor Green pops out to third baseman Scott Moore in foul territory. Sean Halton walks. Brooks Conrad to 2nd. Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Martin Maldonado replaces Corey Patterson. Martin Maldonado called out on strikes. Gameday

Yup, thanks a lot anonymous scout guy man. Of course Thornburg was only the starting CF'er when he was not pitching in college. What a stiff.

I only pick on you because you can handle it. And also because I had the same misconception. Wily Peralta, in a hitters league at the highest level, has put together this 2012 line: 2.12 ERA .882 WHIP .155 BAA 1.85 GO:FO 2.17 K:BB and a ridiculous 4.8 H/9 in 17 IP. I think the thing people keep focusing on is the 6.9 K/9. I look past that because in 2011 in the same league, Peralta had a 11.6 K/9. The K's will come.

Why would you want Ross moved to the pen this early in his career? McClung and even Miller I can get on board with, but Ross was dominant last year, right there with Thornburg until he scuffled a bit later in the year. So far this year he's looked good. I wouldn't move a start out of the rotation until he shows he simply can't compete in the rotation. At risk of showing my lack of knowledge for the DSL and Rookie league guys, I would move Ross to the pen for the simple reason of being more aggressive with the youngsters. Not seeing Manny Ruiz on a full season team is disappointing. Same with Tyler Cravey, who has much better pure stuff than Ross. Not to mention we need a spot for Brooks Hall when he comes back. Now if Ross keeps (2 starts) dominating in A+, something he completely failed to do last season, then keep trying it with him. I do like him better then the Anundsons and Seidels of the world, and would bump them to the pen before Ross. There is a thread on the Ross if you feel like really hashing this out, but I think I made my thoughts clear here and briefly there. Edit: I should add that I agree on Miller, almost. I want to see how he is doing around the All-star break. If he cannot prove he can corral his control problems, I want him in the pen. He has the stuff to fast track as a reliever.

Sounds Drop Wednesday Matinee To RedHawks, 7-5 04/18/2012 1:04 PM ET Nashville Sounds NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds dropped a 7-5 contest to the visiting Oklahoma City RedHawks on Wednesday afternoon at Greer Stadium in the opener of a four-game set. Nine of the Sounds' 13 games this season have been decided by one or two runs (3-6 in those contests). RedHawks starter Dallas Keuchel (3-0) threw his third straight quality start to open the season for the win. The left-hander surrendered two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three in seven innings. Keuchel tossed seven scoreless against Nashville earlier this season on April 12 in Oklahoma City. Center fielder Logan Schafer went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI. In left field for the first time at home this season, Eric Farris scored two runs while adding a hit to extend his hitting streak to five games. Oklahoma City right fielder Justin Ruggiano belted a solo homer to right field to leadoff the second inning to give the RedHawks a 1-0 lead. The long ball was Ruggiano's first of the season. The RedHawks added another run in the next inning for a 2-0 advantage as the first two batters led off with singles. After both runners moved to scoring position on a double steal, J.B Shuck scored on a walk combined with a wild pitch from Rogers. The Sounds trimmed the lead in half in the next frame. Farris singled to left field, moved from first to third on a Schafer base hit to right field, and came home on an Edwin Maysonet sacrifice fly. Oklahoma City extended the lead to 5-1 in the visiting half of the fifth with a couple homers off reliever Seth McClung. Brian Bixler hit a solo shot to left field and Scott Moore crushed a two-run homer to right. Nashville plated its second run in the fifth thanks to an RBI-double from Schafer. Farris reached on a fielder's choice groundout, stole second base, and scored on a line drive two-bagger from the center fielder. The RedHawks made it 7-2 in the next inning as Bixler tripled off the top of the centerfield wall and scored on the ensuing at-bat when Fernando Martinez looped a base hit over second base. Martinez later scored the other run on an infield groundout from Brett Wallace. After Maysonet walked in the eighth, second baseman Brooks Conrad crushed his first home run in a Sounds uniform to reduce the lead to three runs at 7-4. On a 1-1 pitch from reliever Juan Abreu, Conrad crushed the two-run shot to right field. The Sounds threatened in the bottom of the ninth against closer Jose Valdez. First baseman Sean Halton reached on a fielding error and moved to third on a single from Corey Patterson. Halton then scored on a infield ground out from Farris to trim the lead to two runs. As the tying run, Farris took second on defensive indifference and was stranded there as the game ended on a long fly out from Hainley Statia. In his season debut for the Sounds starting pitcher Mark Rogers (0-3) allowed two runs on three hits and two walks in three inning of work. The right-hander fanned three in 69 pitches, 35 for strikes in the loss. In his first relief appearance since moving to the bullpen, McClung was touched for five runs on seven hits and three walks in 2 1/3 innings. Vinnie Chulk tossed a season-high 2 2/3 scoreless innings while allowing one of two inherited runners to score. Right-handed reliever Amaury Rivas ended the contest with a perfect ninth inning. The Sounds and RedHawks will play a doubleheader on Thursday night consisting of pair of seven-inning contests. Right-hander Josh Butler (0-2, 3.86) will toe the rubber for the Sounds in the opener against RedHawks righty Jordan Lyles (1-0, 1.50). Nashville righty Brian Baker (1-1, 4.82) will start the nightcap versus right-hander Henry Sosa (0-0, 3.00). Box Score I listened to all of Rogers' start. You can view my comments here. We also get the interesting Caleb Gindl injury nugget via Jeff's broadcast. We should see Caleb back in the lineup soon. Amaury Rivas fared the best of the three Brewers relievers. He had a clean 9th. His ERA sits at 1.29 on the season. Logan Schafer is starting to heat up. Over his last 10 games: .275/.370/.450 5:5 BB:K (Season: .226/.317/.358 6:8 BB:K). Taylor Green is in a season starting slump but he did BB at least. So did Sean Halton. Brooks Conrad hit his first HR. Game Log The Rogers batters. Okla. City Top of the 1st J. B. Rogers with a 20 pitch 1st inning. He gave up no hits but walked a guy. Brooks Conrad his starting and hitting 3rd. Halton moves down to 6th. Farris in LF again. Edit 1: Rogers gives up a homer in the second but gets 2 K. Edit 2: According to Jeff, Caleb Gindl is day-to-day. It is a "tweaked" hamstring. That is from manager Sandy Guerrero. Not expected to miss significant time. Edit 3: Allowed a run on a WP that Maldonado couldn't find. 69 pitches through 3. Schafer caught an almost 3-run bomb with his back to the wall to end the inning.

Thanks B2K. Worked like a charm.

With the lack of pitch counts at the A+ level, I cannot prove this, but I think Jimmy Nelson has been the most dominant. I just get the feeling he is cruising through his innings right now. Lots of 10 pitch and fewer types. That is what ground balls can do for you. Thornburg and Bradley are right there. Peralta and Jungmann will probably be the answer in a month once they get hot.

Brevard County 5 Flying Kitties 0 Box Score What more can you say about LHP Jedidiah Bradley? Tonight's line: 6 IP 4 H 0 R 0 ER 1 BB 7 K 7:3 GO:FO. To me, Jed is a shining example of what pro coaches can do for a pitcher. Not many thought Jed was this polished but he must have been buffed pretty good over the winter and early spring by the coaches. Or maybe the best run of his life just happens to coincide with his full season debut? You can decide for yourself. Our old buddy/nemesis/top prospect Eric Arnett debuted and relieved Bradley. He gave up 1 hit and hit 1 batter before escaping unscathed. Alan Williams shut down the game with 2 scoreless and 2 K. The bats proved potent but sporadic once again. Lead off hitter and starting SS Nick Shaw (1-3 BB) set the table. Shaw is off to a nice start. T.J. Mittelstaedt, the Alpha-extra base hit machine, had another (7 now) with his 3rd 3B on the year. Cody Hawn (2-4 SB) struck out two more times (13 K in last 6 G). He never had much of a contact problem before now. Beta-extra base hit machine Miguel Velazquez (5 now) had a double. No Shawn Zarraga in this one. Another clean sheet on D. Perhaps this has something to do with the tremendous success of our pitching staff? Game Log Brevard County Bottom of the 3rd Alpha Franklin Romero Jr. singles on a line drive to left fielder Tyler Collins. Nick Shaw singles on a fly ball to right fielder Avisail Garcia. Thinking about Scooter Gennett reminded me of another middle infielder the Brewers drafted last year in the 18th round, Chris McFarland. Their builds are polar opposites but their pre-draft scouting reports are so similar. McFarland's debut this spring will be highly anticipated by me. McFarland: "Chris McFarland is a SS/OF with a 6-1 195 lb. frame from Lufkin, TX who attends Lufkin HS. Strong athletic look. 6.54 runner, powerful strides. Right handed hitter, open stance, rock back load, good balance, strong hands, very good bat speed, good idea how to hit, handles the barrel well, makes adjustments, gap power now, more in the future, premium offensive talent. Plays both shortstop and outfield, has improved his actions at shortstop, short quick low release on throws, has range, light on his feet, hands are softening up, centerfield an obvious fallback position. Excellent student." Gennett: "As a left-handed hitter Gennett is one of the best pure hitters with one of the better approaches of any prep player eligible for the 2009 draft. He doesn't have the greatest size, and may not have the range to stick at shortstop, but he is an athletic player that has very good speed as well as a very strong arm. He handles himself very well at second base, and third base could also be an option given his offensive potential and arm strength. Gennett's pitch recognition is uncommon for a high school senior, as he exhibits an incredibly polished approach at the plate. He has very good bat speed and can turn on the best of fastballs, and he performed well on the showcase circuit during the summer of 2008, including his participation in the Aflac All-American Classic. Despite his smaller frame, he has good power potential, and should hit plenty of doubles and triples as well. He had somewhat of a down senior year, which caused scouts to wonder if he may be better off going to college. If he does take his talents to Florida State we may be talking about him as a first-rounder for the 2012 draft."

Kevin Goldstein's Blog, Future Shock, on Scooter Gennett: "All Gennett does is hit. He's small, he doesn't walk enough, he's just an average runner and his defense at second base can get sloppy, but he hits. He hits everything. He hits velocity, he hits off-speed, he hits inside, he hits outside, he just barrels everything. Whether that proves to be enough is still debatable, but with a .321/.345/.472 line in his first 12 games, proving himself at the upper levels is helping his cause." That was the free tidbit. Anyone have a 'script? I bet there are Thornburg and Nelson tidbits.

Oh lordy, the first double header of the year. Will we see Max Walla tonight? Edit: Hopefully Sean Halton will get back on track soon. 1-16 5 K 0 BB in his last 5 and .229/.270/.343 11 K 2 BB over his last 10 games. He needs to be productive for people to look past the scouting reports (or lack-there-of).

Pitching Prospect Velocity Reports (Updated for 2012)
Tedaldtada replied to Tedaldtada's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Jim Breen on Mark Rogers (Pre-season 2012): "He was hitting 94 MPH in camp." I remember when this info came out during spring training, but cannot remember the original source. Breen tweeted it today, so I am just going to run with it for now. Maybe someone remembers if it was Breen or someone else originally reporting it. -

Is is possible but there is a 60,000 character limit per post. I will compress the quotes as much as I can, but eventually we will run out of space. Now if you are talking about creating a separate thread with a list of pitchers in the first post and links to each pitcher's individual post with reports, then I think that is a great idea. I, alas, am not a moderator, so it would be difficult for me to create and update a locked thread. -
New Orleans (Marlins) 11 Nashville 5 Box Score The pitching was forgettable for Nashville tonight. Mike Fiers had by far his worst start as a Brewer. Fiers is not known for walks and he had 5 tonight. He also had 2 WP. One bright spot was Dan Meadows who went 3 scoreless with 3 K. Caleb Gindl (2-3 HR) and Logan Schafer (2-4 HR 2B BB) had big games. Gindl left the game after his 3rd AB. That is something to watch. No other Sound was on multiple times. Game Log Runs were scored in 9 of the 18 half innings. There were only 3 perfectly pitched innings, two by Dan Meadows. Game Day

Stuff like that is why I will never pay to read him. Agreed. Has he been right about anything? Ever? Remember all of those fantastic players he acquired for the Blue Jays when he worked for them? Law actually reportedly got offered an Astros front office job this past year. He turned it down which is too bad because I would love to see him put his reputation where his mouth his. I cannot imagine him, snarky as he is, being able to sustain long term relationships with his peers and subordinates.

Pitching Prospect Velocity Reports (Updated for 2012)

Alex Cohen on Tyler Thornburg (4/16/2012): "94-95 early on apparently. Not sure what it was later." -
Brevard County 3 Lakeland 0 Box Score Jimmy J Nelson was simply incredible tonight. Head over to Twitter and congratulate the young man. After only recording 1 K through the first 4 innings, Nelson cranked it up a notch to K 6 over the final 3 including the last 4 hitters he faced. Hitters are batting .119 against Nelson this season through 3 starts. He owns a 4.00 GO:FO ratio. He has 21 K in 17 IP. He is a huge helium prospect who will likely see numerous levels this minor league season. Alan Williams and Casey Medlen each pitched a scorless inning to preserve the win for Nelson. Each had a K and Medlen recorded his 4th save. You may notice a major lineup shakeup for this one. Miguel Velazquez (2-4 HR) moved from 4th to 6th. T.J. Mittelstaedt (0-3 BB) from 2nd to 3rd. Reggie Keen (1-3 2B) hit second and Shawn Zarraga (0-3) hit cleanup. Franklin Romero Jr got a rare start and smacked a 2B in 3 trips. Mike Walker had a 2B in four trips. Another clean sheet for the D. Game Log Nelson's night in Link Report ink. Lakeland Top of the 1st Daniel Fields grounds out, shortstop Nick Shaw to first baseman Michael Walker.
