  1. Apparently my company filed notice with the state of CA on Friday of a small number of layoffs (<100) in CA effective Jan 6th. CA has a law that requires employers to give 60-days notice to the state of any layoffs. From what I can tell, it's less than 10% of our CA employees (as our US HQ is in CA). I know this borders on political, but I am sick of the Fed raising interest rates with the deliberate outcome of increasing unemployment. I don't know anyone who is spending excessively and deliberately trying to spend more than they have to. I have a mortgage so my housing payment isn't going to change (save for small changes in taxes/insurance). My vehicle is paid off and I have no plans on changing that unless absolutely necessary. What I don't see people talking about is competition. Mergers and acquisitions have left most industries with at most 3-4 big companies that account for >75% of sales. If you want bran flakes with raisins for breakfast, your choices are Kellogg's, Post, and whatever the store brand is. If Kellogg's raises their prices, you can bet that Post and the store brand will raise theirs as well. If you switch to oatmeal, you have Quaker, the generic store brand, the premium/organic store brand, and maybe one or two smaller organic/premium companies. There's not a lot of choice, and they're all subject to grain prices. The Fed can only control interest rates, but the government needs to focus on increasing supply and competition. Demand isn't the issue.

I'm hearing from a number of places that people are applying with no interest (so they can keep collecting unemployment), don't show up for the interview, etc. Have to go through dozens of applicants to find someone legitimately interested. My guess is it's to weed those out who aren't really interested.
  3. They redid Granato's contract this offseason and he's only owed something like $1M if they fire him before the end of the season. Highly likely he doesn't finish the season.

I think this is based on several assumptions that don't apply to everyone: You have to live in the same area - people who are retired or people who now can work remote don't have to stay in the same area, opening up many, many options You have to buy another house - there is nothing wrong with renting, especially now with interest rates high You have a family - many homeowners are single or a couple w/no kids and can get a one-bedroom if they need to, opening up many more options You have to have a home that has A, B, C, D, E, F, and G - you don't need stainless steel appliances, an attached 2-car garage, hardwood floors, quartz counters, open kitchen/living room, heated bathroom floor, etc., especially if you are only renting for a year or less There's plenty of housing options out there (so long as you don't have a big family).
  5. Interesting that Google Maps has the exit numbers on the map but you can't search by freeway and exit number. Interesting how the main population of the Fox Valley (Neenah/Menasha/Appleton) gets skipped as the stations break from Oshkosh (exit 119, Oshkosh Ave) to exit 150 (Kaukana, where there really isn't anything now, no shopping center/restaurants), especially with another one at exit 170. College Avenue (exit 138) would make so much more sense. Hopefully they put the one on exit 119 near Rocky Rococco's.
  6. Taylor is a great 4th OF and as a RHH will make a good platoon/PH complement for the LHH's Mitchell and Frelick. While not popular, I would not be surprised if they trade Renfroe. Only one year of control left and will likely get a significant arbitration raise. I don't think the Brewers like to let assets expire. Saving Renfroe's arbitration raise will allow them to bring in a free agent OF along with what they can get in trade value. I think they'd try to get a major league piece in return with more than one year of control, likely a setup man or long reliever/swingman.

    Slightly off-topic, but on the topic of Madison staples, I had La Bamba's for the first time in decades today. Good stuff as well. Sucks that the downtown Chicago location isn't open on weekends.

    There can be a surprisingly high amount of variability in quality in franchised restaurants. The few I've heard from who have had it from Pizza Hut have had good things to say about it.

You are likely getting interference from something nearby: In the presence of electrical interference, you may experience frozen images or intermittent audio while viewing over-the-air television programs. This interference may be caused by equipment in your home, such as hair dryers, sewing machines, electric drills, doorbell transformers, light switches, smartphone chargers, power supplies, computing devices, washing machines, clothes dryers, fluorescent lights, LED lights, or garage door openers. Electrical interference may also be caused by power lines. Interference caused by your power company's electrical equipment is normally continuous, and your power company should be notified. A simple method of determining the location of electrical interference is by using a portable battery-powered AM radio tuned to a quiet frequency at the lower end of the dial. You should hear static or a buzzing sound as you get close to the source of the interference. The closer you get, the more intense the static will be. If you're in an apartment/condo, it could be from a neighbor. If your antenna is near a wall, my guess is that there are electrical wires behind the wall or outside the wall.
  10. Not everyone who puts a property on the market has to sell. Sometimes it's a "make me move" number.
  11. All real estate is local. If someone lives in an area where supply is low and they have a median or less priced home they will probably not have to drop price at all and may still get over listing. If someone lives in an area where supply is high or they are priced on the upper end of the spectrum, they will likely have to drop price.
  12. I don't know about that. Maybe for apartments/rentals, but new home inventory is up to an almost 12-month supply. I've heard that about used cars as well, but everyone I've spoken to recently (small sample) who is actively looking for a vehicle has said that inventory is still low and it's hard to get what they want. For new vehicles almost everyone has said that they've had to go to multiple dealers to try to get on a reasonable waiting list for what they want. I just don't see demand going down, so supply is going to have to increase significantly.
  13. Definitely energy. I'd look into electric energy providers and any global alternative energy providers. The EU governments should be providing every incentive they can to consumers to move away from using oil and gas, and if the people of the EU are smart they are investing in any alternative energy home heating and transportation option they can find.

Some similarities between that trade in 83 and the Brewers trading Hader this year. Did those trades take the heart and guts out of their teams? Seemed like it did in 83, some arguments that it did in 22 too.

  16. Agreed - Valerio was in my consideration set (actually, the next guy at #7), but like others have said every year there are guys like him available but rarely picked. I agree that they are more likely to lose Devanney (harder to find a SS with good offensive production than 2B) than Valerio, and I don't see them having more than six spots to add people, thus why I had Devanney on my list and not Valerio.

  20. Old data, but according to Baseball Savant, from 2008 to 2014 league ISO at the top of the zone declined significantly and contact rates on pitches up in the zone have declined. The problem with targeting the top of the zone exclusively is if you miss high you increase walks/pitch counts and if you miss low.... ball go far.
  21. How does that compare to the rest of the league? My understanding is that now that most pitchers throw at least mid-90's that very few hitters in the majors can hit fastballs at the top of the zone.

There's more than one way to skin a cat in today's MLB. And if you don't have much power, you need to have an elite hit tool in order to create runs.
