  1. If you put all of your eggs in one basket you may get Gilbert Lara. I'd be curious if someone were to go back and look at, say, the players who signed for the highest bonuses in 2009-2012 and see how many of those guys panned out. I don't have access to that data, and don't know if anyone else has either. It takes at least five years to get any type of read on 16-year-olds so I wouldn't go any more recent than 2012 or 2013.
  2. I'm torn on this one. He's a rental, but he's a helluva rental - hard to argue that he wouldn't be the biggest mathematical upgrade due to his production and how poor of production they have been getting from SS. Plus the NL is ripe for the picking this year - the Brewers still have the best record in the NL. The competition has just as many if not more flaws than the Brewers. That being said, it's not DS's MO to give up a lot for a rental. I could see him checking in close to the deadline and making a relatively low take-it-or-leave-it offer (Ortiz, Ray, and one of Derby/Wilkerson as the O's have made controllable pitching a priority) and see if that's the best one. The closer to the deadline the more the pressure is on the O's to get something for him rather than nothing.
  3. I wonder if this is Sogard's last AB as a Brewer. If Yelich's back is bothering him and out for a while, they'll need another OF. Sogard out, Phillips called up.
  4. Jeffress back to consideration for the All Star game. You can't expect relievers to have 0.34 ERAs, but his 1.14 ERA and 0.80 WHIP are pretty outstanding.
  5. Didn't Votto get tossed a day or two ago for arguing?
  6. Listed at 6'4", 250 Votto is no small guy - 6'2", 220 - but in comparison...
  7. For those of us on Gameday only, what the heck happened?
  8. Miley is on the 60-day DL, they needed someone who they could DFA when Miley was ready to be activated. They have others they could do that with, but they won't DFA Ramirez or QT-C for Miley.
  9. Yeah, I'd say if there's one untradeable it's Peralta. Hiura has enough questions about his arm for me to consider trading him in the right deal. If Hiura reinures his arm and has to DH... he's of no value to the Brewers.
  10. I don't agree, but Hader hasn't pitched in four days. I'd hardly say that Barnes failed considering he hasn't given up a run yet.
  11. I think that they are much more likely to take on salary and/or get a rental than make a big splash for a young player with multiple years of control. They can get quality if they will take on salary.
  12. Really surprised Corey Ray isn't on your list. Is it because they don't have to protect him this offseason? Ray's resurgence could tempt some, and his June is looking like his past two seasons. Plus he's blocked by Cain and Phillips. I think that guys coming off of injuries (Kirby, Houser, Bickford) won't have full value yet and won't be worth trading. Other than that, I think your list is solid. 1) Stokes 2) Phillips 3) Gatewood 4) Santana 5) Ray 6) Diplan 7) Ortiz 8) Griep 9) Ponce 10) Segovia Others I could see as spare parts or smaller deals: Jankins, J. Lopez, Wilkerson, Ramirez. I believe Segovia is Rule 5 eligible.
  13. I'm not convinced they need to make a move for a catcher or a starting pitcher. Pina's BABIP is .250 this year - he's been getting a little unlucky. His BB% and K% have both improved over 2017, his ISO has improved over 2017, and his hard-hit% is up slightly too (as is his soft contact%). He's also pulling the ball less and hitting oppo more. I think he's been a little unlucky. What they need is to get Saladino back. Saladino starts at SS, Perez is the backup, Miller is the emergency, Arcia goes to AAA to find his swing and takes Sogard goes with him. Saladino is the upgrade at SS and Miller is an upgrade over Sogard. Two black holes removed.
  14. [sarcasm]The cost is a handful of fans who overreact to every single game.[/sarcasm] It's a long season, things will ebb and flow. I wonder though how much of it has to do with guys showing up to the park not knowing if they'll be in the lineup because it changes from day to day. It's been said that most relievers prefer to know their role because they can anticipate when they will be used and when they will need to start getting ready to come in. Mental preparation is just as important as physical preparation. I'd imagine the same thing goes for position players. Different lineup every day, lefties sometimes sitting versus righties, righties sometimes sitting against lefties. The closest thing to consistency has been Yelich in the #2 hole (but not knowing what OF spot he'll be playing), Cain in CF every game (but sometimes he bats leadoff and sometimes third), and Shaw hitting cleanup (maybe sitting against tough LHP). Maybe Pina in the #7 spot. Braun doesn't know if he'll be in the lineup. Thames doesn't know if he'll be in the lineup (or what position he'll play). Villar sure as hell doesn't know if he'll be in the lineup. The Lazy Susan OF/1B and 2B/SS random lineups... has to be mentally challenging not knowing if they'll be in the lineup or what Counsell is going to do. Maybe the solution if for Counsell to make it clear to the team what everyone's role is and who is going to be playing when.
  15. I would be willing to bet that it was much more on the end of Shaw saying/thinking he was ok. These guys are ultra competitive and do not want to be thought of as soft. They will say they are OK even when they aren't.
  16. Braden Webb... en fuego. Medeiros with a really nice piggy-back.
  17. Even better listening to the depressing call by the Cardinals' TV crew. Just as fun as listening to the Cardinals' TV crew during yesterday's whipping.
  18. ahhh, yup, same with everyone else I would guess. I've been struggling with that for well over a year. What's taken you guys so long?
  19. There were a lot in the 2015 draft. Maybe quantity wise not as many, but that was the infamous Donny Walton, Justin Hooper, Jonathan India, Donnie Everett, Charlie Donovan, Tristan Beck, Nolan Kingham draft. Unfortunately Everett didn't sign. If he had, maybe he's playing minor league ball instead on June 2nd, 2016...
  20. Wow. McCoy was a 5-star and ESPN's #4 C recruit in 2017. In a draft that was fairly void of big men, they got a 7'1", 250 lb redshirt freshman (19? 20?) who averaged 16.9 ppg and 10.3 rpg as a UDFA? Rumors this morning that the Hawks had a deal with Milwaukee to move up to the 17th pick, but media leaks that the Bucks were going to select DDV made them pull back knowing that Huerter would still be there at 19.
  21. It's possible they asked for their release. Ghelfi had only played in 21 games this year, and I wasn't aware of any injury holding him back; might have felt like he wasn't getting an opportunity. Maybe one or both felt it was time to move on from pro ball; as we know, they don't make much money at that level and perhaps it was time to make a better living. We'll see if they show up in Indy ball; if not, then they may have felt like it was time to move on, not the Brewers.
