  1. Can somebody please explain to me what the appeal is of the "fireworks" that just explode loudly in the air and make no visual spectacle at all? All they do is set off car alarms. Why does someone 4 blocks south of me get off on launching those things all night long? I get that there are dozens of people within a mile or two of me launching off fireworks, but where are the police? Are fireworks now legal in Chicago?
  2. Hawkins is still pitching good, and at Coors Field none the less. He wouldn't cost much - why not him? He's only walked 7 in 28 innings, so I wouldn't put him in the category of Axford and Balfour.
  3. Zarraga 1-1 vs. Joe Kelly with a line drive double. He hits Cardinals pitching, bring him up.
  4. I wonder if Kidd has the "star power" to draw free agents into Milwaukee. Don't get me wrong, the Bucks need to build through the draft, but if they do this right in a couple of years they may need one or two pieces to make a serious run and these players have grown up watching Kidd be a star in the league for a long time.
  5. I'm guessing Gomez with a day off tomorrow, and subsequently Figaro down and Schafer (if he's been down long enough) or Gindl up. I think Gindl has played CF, right?
  6. Didn't someone say that some publication/person had Brandon Diaz as a top prospect? They may know what they are talking about. Nathan Orf in his last 11 games has had only one game with less than two hits, and he had one hit in that game. No power, but have to love that OBP. The jump to AA next year is really going to be big. Can he be the future RH platoon with Gennett? Have a game Taylor Jungmann. His best start as a pro? Nice to see his K rate up this year while maintaining a good GO:AO ratio.
  7. I wouldn't say that O'Bryant is much like Sanders. O'Bryant is 6'9", 260.
  8. Trade GA for the rights to Exum
  9. No one had GA in the first round last year, but Hammond pulled the trigger. Hammond has shown that he will go high-risk, high reward with international players if he thinks they have a higher upside (GA, Yi). I would not be surprised to see Hammond pull the trigger on Exum at #2 if Hammond thinks he has a higher upside than whomever else is available, even if it means taking a few more years of development.
  10. Bradley with a decent outing. The 4 BB and HR weren't good but 9 K's in 7 innings are as well as a 8:2 GO:FO. Really nice to see him get his K rate up this year, and his GO:FO ratio which was good before this year has become great.
  11. For his career, as a Brewer he has a 2.92 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 9.6 K/9, 2.93 K/BB. [sarcasm]Pretty putrid.[/sarcasm] I have no problem giving up solo HRs when your team is up by two runs in the 9th inning. The last thing you do is walk guys with a multi-run lead; take the 70% chance that they will make an out by throwing a strike and putting the ball in play.
  12. The month of June through June 22nd: 21 games, 1 day off, 15 of 21 games on the road. Record: 14-7
  13. One reason he was only traded for $1 was because according to his contract he had to be offered to every major league team as of 6/16. The A's were the only team that claimed/wanted him, therefore the A's had all of the power in the negotiation. The A's could have passed, in which the Brewers got nothing for him. If another team such as the Cubs had claimed/wanted him the Brewers could have gotten a little more but not a lot more. If the Angels - the A's chief rival this year for the AL West crown - had put in a claim then you have division rivals wanting the same player which would have pushed the trade return up. Another reason the Brewers accepted only $1 for him was because the Brewers want to have a reputation among players that they won't stand in the way of a minor league veteran getting a major league opportunity elsewhere if there is no room in Milwaukee. This will encourage players like Mills or other fringe major leaguers to sign with the Brewers; they won't be stars, but you never know when a guy like that might be needed to fill a bench role or have a breakout season like a McGehee, etc.
  14. I'll take 5:1 odds for $1 that Zarraga gets added to the 40-man and called up in September. A 3rd-string catcher who is a switch hitter with great OBP and a 30:11 BB-to-K ratio? Talk about a great PH option in addition to being able to free up Lucroy/Maldy to be pinch run for late in a game/in extra innings. Quite a bench asset for a team contending for the playoffs.
  15. Braun had the best quote, referring to Gibson: "You'd have to ask him," Braun said. "I wish him the best. I hope he finds peace and happiness in his life and is able to enjoy his life. I wish him the best."
  16. You think that if you were going to give Gomez a day off you'd do it BEFORE you send Schafer down to the minors.
  17. I remember writing letters and mailing them to players with baseball cards and a SASE asking the cards to be signed. Tony Gwynn was one of the few star players I sent one to... and he signed it and returned it. Class act. I would like for MLB to declare June 16th Tony Gwynn Remembrance day, and ban all tobacco products on that day.
  18. [sarcasm]Because we knew exactly what to expect from Axford and Turnbow.[/sarcasm]
  19. Let's be really, really careful with this thread. I was in New York, selling educational books door-to-door. Can't remember if I saw it on the TV at someone's house or back at the apartment with my roommates. Quite the summer. I'm pretty sure that the 30 for 30 film "June 17th, 1994" is on this week, maybe today. Really good film about everything that went on that day (Rangers Stanley Cup parade, Arnold Palmer's last U.S. Open, the NBA finals, and... a white Bronco).
  20. Gorzelanny is more than a LOOGY. Last year his OPS-A vs. RHB was .741 (includes both as a starter and reliever), not terrible by any stretch, and as a reliever he had 33 appearances and pitched 36 innings. So is Duke - he has faced more RHB this year (62 PAs) than LHB (42), and (small sample alert) has a lower OPS-A vs. RHB (.479) than LHB (.612). Both have started in the past so they are adequate vs. RHB.
  21. (Their stadium is in Anaheim, not Los Angeles, and Anaheim is nowhere near Los Angeles. So I'm calling them Anaheim.) The Angels currently do not have any LHP in their bullpen. The Brewers have four. My guess is that some team out there - quite possibly the Angels - wants to see Gorzelanny pitch in the majors once or twice before trading for him. It would take a lot to pry Smith from the Brewers, and Wang doesn't really have value to the Angels, so my guess is Duke or Gorzelanny would be most likely to go. Not sure what the Angels would send back. Doubt the Brewers could get Cron for either of them, and the Angels farm system might be more barren than the Brewers. Maybe there's a three-way trade in the works to get a LH 1B/3B (Angels are no strangers to 3-way trades), maybe the Brewers throw in a prospect to get Cron or Hunter Green, but the Angels would love to get their hands on one of the Brewers LH bullpen arms.
  22. No IGT yet... might as well start one. Specifically came here to post that it looks like there is an entire full-length butt crack behind home plate. Good lord.
  23. The funniest part is this is post #24 (is that Miggy Cabrera?) - he knows that Beltre is going to nut-punch him and covers up before Beltre can do it.
  24. Is it just me, or are Met fans surprisingly indifferent to Braun? Figured there would be a lot more boo birds in New York. It's because they live in New York. They may be Mets fans, but they've been dealing with the A-Rod circus in the media for years.
  25. I wouldn't call it bad luck. HS players are a greater risk for lack-of-maturity/poor decision-making issues than college players. Always have been, always will be.
