  1. That has less to do with Lawrie and Francisco and more to do with the fact that the BJs second basemen have been putrid this season. Think 1B for the Brewers last season, that's how bad their 2B have been.
  2. This has potential. The problem is that even though the BJs are in last place they are only 1.5 games out, and I think they can get a decent return for Rasmus in terms of prospects. If Braun projects to miss significant time, then I might see if Weeks + two of Fiers/Pena/Gagnon (any upper level starter not named Nelson, Cravy, or Jungmann) might get it done. Most of the BJs starters are on the wrong side of 30 and will be FAs or have cheap buyouts the next two years, so they will likely want team-controlled starting pitching in return.
  3. Didn't Weeks play OF in college? On the plus side, Segura must be ready to go, maybe A-Ram too.
  4. The value of a switch hitter like Morales at 1B is that it allows the Brewers to dump both Overbay and Reynolds, freeing up an extra roster spot and allowing the Brewers to keep Wang stashed away in the bullpen for the year. That being said, LO and MR are playing very well so far and the better solution is probably to release Weeks once Segura and Ramirez are both ready to go.
  5. This. Fastball velocity is not as important as the differential between fastball velocity and secondary pitch velocity and the ability to throw strikes with those secondary pitches. An 88 mph fastball looks like 98 if you are expecting a 78 mph changeup. I'm wondering if baseball has reached a point where prospects have become overvalued, to the point where the inefficiency in the market is that pitchers like Estrada are the bargain. Moneyball wasn't about OBP; it was about the fact that players with high OBP were undervalued and a bargain in the market at the time. I think the way Thornburg has been pitching in his role you don't change anything and bring up Fiers, who is putting up HS-pitcher like numbers in AAA: 33.2 IP, 19 H, 3 BB, 47 K, 0.80 ERA.
  6. Imagine the thought process for Fiers when he sees what happened in St. Louis today. I wish I had a longer track record of success? [sarcasm]You're right, rushing him to the majors less than three years after he was drafted didn't allow him to develop his full repertoire, resulting in an awful career 4.20 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 9.0 K/9.[/sarcasm] Imagine the thought process of the Brewers after seeing what Fiers did today.
  7. I'm speculating that the answer to this is that while Fernandez went to HS in the Tampa area, he was actually born in Cuba. Since Miami has the largest Cuban population outside of Cuba, I'll wager that is why.
  8. Marquette usually plays with three guards, as do most college teams. And next year due to having so few big men on the roster they will always have three guards on the floor. Especially the first half of the season when Fischer isn't eligible - Taylor will be the tallest guy on the roster; Taylor will be the starting "center" with Burton the PF and Anderson the backup F. During the second half of the season the forward rotation will be two of Fischer/Taylor/Burton/Anderson with Burton/Johnson/Mayo/Cohen at the 3, Mayo/Johnson/Carlino at the 2, and the Wilsons/Carlino at the 1. I think Burton will see a significant amount of time at the 4, leaving plenty of minutes for everyone at the three guard slots. Cohen is a nice get, but I have low expectations of how much a true freshman can contribute. There are also rumblings that one of the young guards needs to do some work to be academically eligible next year. Right now it is so late in the recruiting process that you are weighing signing a less talented player versus holding the scholarship for a year and perhaps getting a better player next year. I believe Marquette still has two open scholarships after adding Carlino, so right now they are just filling spots. Hopefully one of those two goes to Legend Robertin, and they find another graduating junior who is at least 6'7".
  9. I'm just going to throw out a SWAG here, and wonder (with no scientific proof whatsoever to support this theory) if there is too much conditioning/work in the offseason and the elbow doesn't have enough time to recover and strengthen. When it comes to training, rest is just as important as work. You wonder how those guys threw 300 innings and started every fourth day. Yes, they weren't throwing nearly as hard (as recently as the early 80's throwing 90 was considered "gas"), but they didn't do nearly as much work in the offseason either.
  10. Barrett Astin only struck out 3 in 7 IP, but had a 12-1 GO-FO ratio. He has yet to do something in 22 IP this year (which will happen, probably soon), but I don't want to jinx it by saying it.
  11. I don't see anyone signing Overbay if they release him; he's slugging .261 as a 37-year-old 1B for chrissakes. Handshake agreement with "O" that they will resign him after the suspension is up. If someone does sign him, bring up Morris. Reynolds has been OK against RHP (.710 OPS), he can handle it for a few days, or plan for a time when they will face a few lefties. I assume that if Weeks is released and someone signs him, that team is on the hook for picking up his contract next year if he accumulates 600 PAs the rest of the year.
  12. Apparently Sandy Cohen is all that's left of Marquette's recruiting class. Williams apparently took Ahmed Hill and Satchel Pierce with him to VA Tech (per a Tweet from Pierce). Hill is a big loss, but it's not surprising that he chose to play somewhere closer to home and it may keep Johnson from transferring. If Pierce can be parlayed into Legend Robertin that likely is an upgrade. And if there is a graduating junior PF/C out there that would transfer to Marquette for a year that may not be a bad thing in that it will help address the lack of height, specifically experienced height.
  13. Developing? http://mlblogsbrewersbeat.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/prince-fielder-2009-9-6-18-40-29.jpg
  14. Colby, what's the word on Luke Weaver of Florida State this year? His K's are down a bit this year, but last year I heard he was touching 97 and working regularly at 93-94. Definitely has room to add strength at 6'2", 170.
  15. As far as when, the first date I think you look at is the Super Two cutoff. Are there teams with a 1B prospect (or LF/3B prospect who is blocked) that would move their starting veteran LH 1B to make room for a prospect after the Super Two cutoff? I don't know if there are, I'm just posing a scenario. The next date you look at is probably shortly after the draft when teams might have a chain reaction through the organization to make room for the new draft class, and/or Kendrys Morales no longer costs a draft pick. It can happen at any time, as this weekend's trade of Ike Davis proved. If there is a team in contention that has a couple of starters go down and no SP depth, you pick up the phone and have conversations about Fiers and Burgos.
  16. FREE MIKE FIERS As semi-official driver of the BF.net Mike Fiers bandwagon, the belief that last year was an aberration due to being distracted by his mother's illness is gaining more and more evidence.
  17. 13-5 and 15 of the 18 games have been against teams that were in the playoffs last year. If they had been playing the likes of the Cubs, Marlins, and Padres that would be one thing. If they can hold serve on the seven game road stand at STL and CIN, they have a two month+ stretch from May 5th until the All-Star break where the schedule is pretty soft and other than four at ATL and three at PIT the few tough series they have are at home.
  18. A couple of those seasons were because the Brewers couldn't decide if they wanted him to start or relieve, and/or they thought he was the sixth best starter so they put him in the pen. Last year it was because he pulled a hammy running. Never had any arm trouble. What would you offer for a pitcher who last year was 29th in the league in K/9 and 13th in the league in WHIP among all pitchers with at least 100 IP?
  19. Wait for what? To wish we'd have been able to sign him? We're talking about a prospect. Not everything has to come with the obligatory 400 at bat sample size before you can watch a guy and come to the conclusion he looks really good and is likely to be a very good big leaguer. Cespedes looked great and worth the money his rookie year. Last year, not so much.
  20. Would it make sense to piggy-back start him? Have him start for Peralta or Estrada and then bring Peralta or Estrada either after two innings or whenever he gets in trouble. Or are there incentives over games started in contracts that would prevent that?
  21. Daniel Hudson certainly wouldn't call TJ surgery an enhancement. He still hasn't come back from the procedure in 2012, and reinjured his repaired elbow last year during rehab and needed a second TJ surgery.
  22. Saw the replay on the Badgers sports report, and #2 on Kentucky definitely got Jackson's right arm on the way up. That's why it looked like he lost the ball - he could only get one hand on it temporarily because the other hand couldn't get to it after his arm got hit.
  23. I don't think Malek Harris is a huge loss. While Marquette could use his size, he was suspended for most if not all of this year IIRC and had not signed yet. Opens up a schollie for Legend Robertin, a 7' center from London, or Johnathon Wilkins, a 6'10" center from Indiana; Fischer isn't eligible until second semester, so Marquette could use the bigger Robertin or Wilkins more than Harris right away however they are probably much more raw than Harris. ESPN does have Robertin ranked ahead of Harris; can't find anything on Robertin on Scout. I am concerned about Ahmed Hill. Good relationship with Buzz and VT is closer to home, even if a lesser program.
  24. Based on the small sample of watching Henderson and K-Rod pitch in the Boston series, K-Rod looked a lot better than Henderson. Not only was Henderson's velocity down, but he seemed to have location issues as well. K-Rod's ability to hit the bottom edge of the strike zone with his fastball and changeup looked really good. From what I saw, it seems like the right move for now. As far as veteran grittiness, keep in mind that Henderson is less than 11 months younger than K-Rod. Both were born in 1982, so it's not like going with Overbay over a decade-younger Francisco or Halton.
  25. If Gasser was up on him he would have easily blown by him and gotten into the paint. Gasser played all 40 minutes - he didn't have the legs to stay with Harrison on a drive. And if Harrison had gotten into the lane it would have been a much higher percentage shot - either a layup, a lob to one of their forwards, a short jumper, or they way the refs were calling it a blocking foul even though Gasser or someone else was in position and a layup for a 3-point play. Harrison shot 36% from 3 this year; he was a good 5 feet behind the line so that is more like a 30-33% shot; 66-70% chance if he takes that shot that he misses. I think those were the best odds the Badgers had.
