  1. Bah!! I had Orioles as my first choice and Red Sox as my 2nd.
  2. Might have been New York Seltzer, that is ringing a bell. Maybe I'm thinking about a knock-off of NYS that came out after NYS reached it's peak, maybe NYS went to plastic in their later years. I know it wasn't Clearly Canadian or anything else that anyone has mentioned.
  3. On a related note, who made that flavored soda water that was real popular about 15 years ago? Came in clear plastic bottles and had a variety of flavors, got in a debate about this with a friend a week ago and can't for the life of me remember what it was. It wasn't Clearly Canadian, I know that for sure.
  4. Nelson didn't look good his first year either. Usually in their first year or even first two years pitchers are working on specific things - mechanics and/or an additional pitch, and stats/results are secondary. Few guys come out of college with three polished plus pitches and have success right away; often college pitchers abandon certain pitches or rarely throw them because of the bats used at the college level, and have to learn or re-learn that pitch when they get to pro ball.
  5. Axford, according to this site, still has two options left. Mitch Stetter in 21 innings has given up 11 hits and struck out 27 (against lefties has given up 5 hits and struck out 20 in 12 IP). RRR said the bullpen will be situational; why not send Axford down to Nashville to work out his stuff and get another lefty in the pen, particularly one who is filthy against lefties?
  6. If your 2nd and 3rd catchers are your best bats off the bench, then yes you keep three C's. With Bianchi as your backup SS you DFA Izturis and then PH with either Maldonado or Kottaras and still have the other as a backup C.
  7. Salaries need to be included to balance out for Howard's salary, and salaries can eventually be dumped. It's essentially Howard for 1-2 serviceable players plus 3-4 first round draft picks. It's either that or lose him in free agency the next year for nothing; sure Orlando can use Bird rights to offer him the biggest contract but that doesn't mean that Howard will resign with them. Just look at LeBron and Bosh - both turned down bigger deals with their teams to sign with the Heat. So if it is Howard for 1-2 serviceable players and 3-4 first round picks or risk losing him for nothing in free agency, I'll take my chances on the 3-4 first round picks.
  8. Come on, guys. You're better than this: http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=axford001joh Back to Burgos, the success is continuing at a higher level. I posed this in the game thread, but what is the latest scouting report on Burgos? Did he develop a devastating change or cutter? Did he learn from Fiers how to hide the ball? That's the only thing I could think of to explain this explosion of success.
  9. What's the latest scouting report on Burgos? I don't seem to recall him having fireballer stuff... has he developed a devastating change and/or cutter? Did he learn a thing from Fiers about how to hide the ball? Not only is the sample size getting bigger, but it is continuing after making perhaps the biggest jump in the minors - from A+ to AA.
  10. Blame Mike Mussina and Cito Gaston. Mussina's the one who got up in the bullpen even though Gaston wasn't going to put him in the game, despite the game being played in Baltimore. Henceforth the "Cito Sucks" t-shirts, and the push to make sure that everybody gets into the game, culminating in running out of pitchers at the All-Star game in Milwaukee. If Mussina hadn't done that, or if Gaston had put him in the game (for chrissakes, play the home players in front of the home crowd!), that wouldn't have happened - at least not at Miller Park. You're jerks, Mussina and Gaston. Complete knee-biters.
  11. Couldn't have been more proud of Livan Hernandez tonight, despite thinking he is a waste of a roster spot. Waited for two outs in the 9th before (pretty sure) purposely putting a fastball towards the batter's ribs as retaliation for Braun getting beaned the inning before. Don't think I've seen a Brewers pitcher retaliate for a beaning since Seth McClung in 2008. The Brewers pitching staff is tied for last in the majors in HBP with 18. Wolf leads the team with four and Marcum with three, so it's not like opponents are getting drilled with 95 mph fastballs. While beanings themselves aren't correlated to wins, they are correlated to pitching inside. Maybe that is one of the bullpen issues - not pitching inside to move hitters off the plate. I think Axford needs to put a 97 mph fastball up and in every now and then to keep hitters honest. Same with K-Rod (with a 92 mph fastball), and Loe (with a 90 mph fastball). Greinke has good enough stuff to get away with not pitching inside (zero HBP this year), but most of the rest of the staff doesn't.
  12. Mitch Stetter needs to become a part of the Brewers bullpen NOW.
  13. Don't forget, Ax and his wife recently had a baby. Maybe he isn't getting as much sleep, which is impacting his performance.
  14. Greg Maddux made a pretty good career out of throwing 89mph fastballs. When you have pinpoint control, lots of movement, and a great changeup you don't need to throw 96. Yo, Fiers, one of Marcum/Greinke, and then two of Peralta, Thornburg, Rogers, and Estrada (Estrada is statistically above average for a #4/#5 starter as well as cost-controlled) with the other two plus Burgos & Nelson backing up in AAA/AA for depth. They don't need to go outside the org for a FA.
  15. Can't believe I'm saying this, but I think I might hate the Giants as much if not more than the Cubs. The Cubs are kind of like the Bears - they've sucked for so long that I'm almost starting to feel sorry for them. Almost.
  16. Looking at who is under contract for next year: PG: Jennings, Udrih (Livingston is a team option, and I hope they decline it) SG: Ellis SF: Dunleavy, Harris, Leuer PF: Gooden, Mbah a Moute, Brockman (Ilyasova is a FA) C: Sanders, Udoh Observations: 1) They are heavy on F - don't need any of those. 2) I could see the interest in a true C, as Udoh/Sanders/Gooden aren't really big enough to defend a true C. 3) If they let Livingston go, they have about $14M to work with to resign Ilyasova (assuming $2.5M to sign their draft picks) 4) Definitely need a backup SG. Depending on how much they can sign Ilyasova for, hopefully that will leave enough money left over to sign Jodie Meeks as a backup SG. Spencer Hawes as a true C would be nice, but I think someone will overpay for him. If they can resign Ilyasova and a backup SG, that will leave them the flexibility to draft the player they feel have the highest upside at #12. Of the players who realistically could be there at #12, Rivers is my top choice. If not, I could buy Leonard at #12 and then Kim English in the 2nd round, or trade down and draft one of Wroten/Jenkins.
  17. I think the talent level in the second half of the first round is just as good as #12, so if they get an opportunity to trade down and pick up a 1st next year I hope they jump on it. Lots of guys I like who could easily be around later in the draft: Terrence Ross Tony Wroten (my sleeper here - yes he can improve his maturity/decision making, but what college freshman can't?) John Jenkins If either of these guys are around for their 2nd round pick I'd jump on them: Festus Ezeli Kim English Another interesting 2nd round pick would be Furkan Aldemir; having a fellow Turk on the team might make Ilyasova more likely to sign an extension with Milwaukee. One thing they really need is a backup SG - having Livingston or moving Jennings over as your backup SG isn't cutting it. That's why I'd like to see one of Ross/Jenkins/English. English is a pretty good defender and his size is why I like him over DJO for their second round pick. Wroten isn't a good enough shooter yet, but I think he has a lot of upside at PG.
  18. Nope. The Hornets agreed to trade their pick to the Lakers the day before the draft, but the Lakers didn't tell the Hornets who to pick until the pick was up: http://www2.journalnow.com/sports/2008/jun/18/lakers-trade-for-bryant-has-been-misconstrued-ar-113126/ "The trade was more about the Lakers' pursuit of Shaquille O'Neal in free agency and the Hornets' need to acquire a center than it was about Bryant."
  19. The good - Schafer, Miller The bad - Peralta The ugly - Maryvale (I don't think I've looked at a Maryvale box score in three years because I know that at that level they are working on specific things, particularly pitchers, and aren't looking at outcomes.) Rob w00ten - over his last 10 appearances covering 15.1 innings he has given up 4 hits, walked 6, and struck out 14.
  20. That, or Eric Gregg is coming back from the dead and umpiring a few upcoming series.
  21. My understanding is and has always been that what Braun tested positive for was abnormally high testosterone levels and not steroids. The high levels were likely caused by bacterial degradation of the sample left unrefrigerated for a significant period of time. This same thing happened to a female Olympic athlete about a decade ago (sample left out unrefrigerated for several days in Spain) and her test showed testosterone levels off the charts, and ultimately was found innocent (after being suspended for six months). If you think Braun tested positive for steroids, then I would like you to present proof. And not just a link to what some writer said, because many of them jumped to conclusions when they heard that Braun "failed" a test and assumed it was steroids/foreign substance. Someone please prove to me that it was steroids/foreign substance. Thank you.
  22. "Kobe and his 'people' basically engineered the whole deal to L.A." There may be truth to that, but if teams thought he would be a star they would have drafted him much higher. I dare say that if Golden State or Cleveland thought Kobe would be a star they would have drafted Kobe and traded him to LA for Divac than draft Jeff Fuller or Vitaly Potapenko. Probably the same for Dallas and Indianapolis instead of drafting Samaki Walker or Erik Dampier. Or they would have asked for more than Divac in return.
  23. If Gameday is correct, they just had Wolf throwing a 55 mph curveball. Gameday officially listed it as an Eephus pitch. Hilarius.
  24. Basically they feel that Aoki is playing better than Green now and Aoki in RF and Hart at 1B is better than Hart in RF and Green at 1B.
