  1. I dislike big-buildup ad campaigns like this Key thing described above. I try extra hard to ignore them. To hijack this thread, did anyone ever go to that website esuvee.com that they were advertising where people were riding these giant monsters on the TV commercials amongst other things. They never told you what it was for, and like you, I hate when they do that and I try extra hard to ignore it. Like the billboards out here prior to the launch of "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" that didn't say what it was for, but had the website "ihatesarahmarshall.com" on it.
  2. Karl Strauss is good. If you can, go to the top of the Marriott in the Gaslamp one night - they have a rooftop lounge that looks over the stadium and over the whole city. Two of my favorite places in the Gaslamp are Bondi Beach Club, where they have a Tasmanian beer called James Boag's Draught - probably the only place in America where you can get that beer on tap, and the Gaslamp Strip Club - a grill-your-own steakhouse where they female wait staff wears burlesque outfits and you have to be 21 to enter (yes, no kids in there at all, ever).
  3. DiFelice needs to find his way to Milwaukee. Parra, CV, and Bush aren't getting it done and they have options so they can be sent down to find their groove while they give DiFelice a shot to see if he is for real or just a AAAA player. Can't be much worse than Parra, CV, or Bush has been this year so why not give him a shot? I think it's time for a little roster overhaul. They need to see if DiFelice and Branyan can give them a shot in the arm and get the ship turned back in the right direction.
  4. In his last five appearances, Thatcher has pitched 6.1 innings giving up 5 hits, 1 BB, and one run. In his last seven appearances, Sarfate has pitched 7 innings giving up 5 hits (but walking 5) and has only given up one earned run. Both appear to have settled down for the time being. Sarfate's walks are concerning, but I'd rather have a guy give up walks than hits. Walks don't hurt you when you don't give up hits; it's when you give up walks then hits - that's when you get in trouble.
  5. Hey, there is a major league player with the last name "Putz", and that doesn't get filtered.
  6. Horses breaking legs or parts of legs and having to be euthanized is not uncommon in this sport. These horses are only 3 years old which is very young, far from their bones being fully developed. That's why this is common. Happens every 5 years or so in one of these triple crown races - who knows how often it happens in other races; it happened two or three years ago to a horse who was vying for the triple crown (can't remember the name, but they did some surgeries but the horse died a month or so later anyway). When a girl I dated about 10 years ago told me about their bones and how fragile they are at that age (she raises show horses and is very anti-horse racing) it changed my perception of this sport. I don't know why they race them at that age, but they're too young to be racing. You can say that humans playing pro sports as teenagers is equivalent, but if humans break a leg they can survive - horses for some reason can't. I don't know if the sport should be abolished, but I'm strongly leaning that way and I have been for almost a decade.
  7. If a team releases a player and another team signs him, then the team that signs him is only responsible for the ML minimum (~$400K) and the original team pays the rest of the salary. If a team waives a player and another team claims him, then the team that claims him takes on his entire salary/contract. Semantics.
  8. Also, sure he struck out a bunch of guys at Wrigley, but isn't a BB more damaging than a K is positive? I think the 11 hits that Suppan gave up in 3.2 IP were a lot more damaging than the 4 BB McClung gave up in 3.0 IP. To answer your question, if you only give up one hit in three innings then no, the BB is not more damaging than the K. Only one of those walks came in to score in three innings. If the Brewers pitchers would have done that over the entire game they would have won 5-3. I'll take one hit, 4 BB, and one run in 3 innings any day of the week. All things being equal, the walks aren't going to be damaging if you don't give up hits and strike guys out.
  9. As much as I'd like to see Nelson get his first taste of the majors in an ideal situation with the Brewers needing LH bats, they don't really have anyone else they can send down to make the exchange other than Stetter (there goes your 2nd bullpen lefty), CV (there goes your 3rd starter), Parra (there goes your #4 starter), Bush (there goes your #5 starter), or Gwynn (there goes your pinch runner, defensive OF replacement). Gwynn or Stetter would be the most likely candidates, but my guess is that they will use it as an opportunity to give partial rest via the DH to Fielder, Braun, Hall, and Hart with Gwynn, Kapler, Dillon, and Counsell getting starts in there. Russ strikes out. A lot. This is not news. What he can do is put up a .750-.850 OPS off your bench, play 1B/3B/LF, neither of which Gwynn can do. And Gwynn can play all three OF positions defensively and pinch run, neither of which Branyan nor anyone else on the team other than Hart and maybe Cameron or Kapler can do. Everyone has a role, and Gwynn's is well-defined and one few players on the team can do. I love Branyan, and in many ways I would have preferred him to be called up over Dillon, but comparing him to Gwynn is apples/oranges because both have completely different roles.
  10. How to spend my Economic Stimulus Package check: --Brewer Playoff Tickets[/s] --Booze Amen. Now that Leinie's is available out here at BevMo that might just be what I'll do. Oh, wait - I don't qualify for the ESP, I make too much money. Yet I rent and park on the street because I can't afford to buy a house here in LA. Yeah, I make too much for the ESP and to contribute to an IRA, but I'm too poor to buy a house where I live. Go figure. Well, CV, Parra, and Bush better pick up the pace or we will be up Poop's Crick. But CV goes and poops himself in the 5th and 6th today so he isn't off to a good start. I guess my plan B if one of these guys can't get it done would be to give DiFelice a shot, and if that doesn't work and the Brewers are within striking range at the end of June then I start to look at what a package of prospects (Gamel, Iribarren, Nelson) could bring. While Lincecum may be untouchable, I always wondered what we might be able to get from SF for some combination of Brad Nelson (replace Aurilia at 1B), Iribarren (replace Durham at 2B), Heether (can't be any worse than the stiffs they have been trotting out at 3B), and Katin (power SF desperately needs) might yield. I thought Nelson/Iribarren plus one more bat (Katin? Gillespie?) might bring a Noah Lowry, but he is not recovering from surgery as hoped. Replace Katin with Gamel and Escobar (replacement for Vizquel) for Heether in that package, and a deal for Lincecum or Cain might not be that far-fetched. They might give us Lincecum if we take Zito's contract off their hands. Hmmm... Gamel, Nelson, Iribarren, Escobar, and Suppan (to even out salary) for Zito and Lincecum. Nah... that's the booze talking.
  11. And the latest Cubs game where he walked 4 in 3 innings He also struck out five, more than twice as many as any other pitcher in that game, Brewer or Cub, including Dempster who only struck out one in twice as many innings. McClung also only pitched 2/3rds of an inning less than Suppan, but Suppan gave up 11 hits to McClung's one. Shouse even gave up a hit and a run in the six pitches he threw. I'll take one earned run in three innings from a reliever any day of the week. As for the Marlins game, the Brewers offense scored two runs on five hits in 10 innings in that game. McClung is not the one to point the finger at there.
  12. No, he's not. Hinton is more than a year younger, throws harder and has one of the best sliders in the system. Turnbow throws even harder, but if you don't have movement or location or change speeds you see the result. Wise had a nice little career in the bullpen for a guy who couldn't throw hard. Hinton, while he may have a great slider, is very Turnbow-esque in how he poops himself whenever there are runners on base. Small sample, but with runners on base and in scoring position Ryan has not given up a hit; Hinton meanwhile has a very Turnbow-esque ERA of 15.43 with runners on base, 21.00 with runners in scoring position this season. And Ryan's career GO/AO smokes Hinton also.
  13. Man, what does Patrick Ryan have to do to get a little love around here? In 82 innings last year gave up only 60 hits, walked 26 and struck out 75, and this year has given up only 3 hits in 14 innings and notched 3 saves already. Forget Robert Hinton; Patrick Ryan is passing you by. Love the thought of bringing up Nelson for the interleague series, but who would you send down? Stetter, the only other lefty? The only other pitchers with options are starters (Parra, CV, Yo). TGJ and stay with 12 pitchers? There goes your defensive replacement and pinch runner then.
  14. And thus like the Doug Henry's, the Tom Tellman's, the Chuck Crim's, and the Bob Gibson's before him, the flash-in-the-pan reliever Turnbow has faded as quickly as he has risen, from outhouse to throne to doghouse. Best of luck T-Bow, and I hope you figure it out for us in Nashville. The heat and the hair made us love you.
  15. I wonder how many combined feet Fielder and Weeks were thrown out by today? I could see sending Weeks with Hardy, Kendall, the pitcher's spot, or even Hall up next, but Fielder? That's just dumb.
  16. Being a Brewers fan always has required much. We've never had the spree-drunk loser-cachet patina of the Cubs. The imperial magesty of the Yankees. The righteous destiny of the Cards. We've had the hard-luck Slavic and stabbing yearning of Brewers fans, a yearning that was extant two generations before in the small-town hysteria for the Braves. Stein, you need to post more often.
  17. Well, if you're going to give up six runs in a relief outing, I'd rather it be in a game where you're already down 13-5 in the 8th inning. Better than giving that up in a game when you're up by 5 (like they did about 10 times last year). I don't think you release someone after a game like this when you still have a winning record (and a split in the series on the road so far - keep in mind, any team will lose 1/3rd of their games and it doesn't really matter that much if they are 2-1 or 19-5, they will still lose at least 60 no matter what), but Turnbow better be on a really short leash right now. Stetter has come in and been great in a short sample, and at this point if Turnbow doesn't start buckling down immediately it might be time to see Bush again, or give DiFelice, Ramirez, or even Sam Narron a shot. Had Turnbow given up a significant lead then maybe, but when you're down 13-5 already it doesn't matter what you do. He could have been told to work on something specific for all we know. On the bright side McClung only gave up one hit in three innings, even though he walked four. All things being equal, that will almost always yield better results than four hits and one walk in three innings.
  18. Not a bad gig to gross over $9M in that career... looking at about $5M after taxes. Better than I've done by the age of 34.
  19. Hopefully Branyan's still with the team come September - he would be a nice LH PH to come off the bench. Down by two or three with a couple of ducks on the pond and Branyan comes in as a PH vs. a righty... oooh, there would be some electricity there. When the rosters expand the Brewers could potentially call up Branyan, Nelson, and Gamel. That would shore up their LH bat situation real quick.
  20. Back to the original question, I believe the answer is Zach Braddock
  21. If anyone still wants to go and can get a ticket, I have hotel space to share for Thurs, Fri, and Sat. $250 covers you for all three nights (includes free breakfast at the hotel); $200 for Friday and Saturday. I'm up for the Beer Bash, but personally I'd rather meet before the game than after - I'd like to go out on the town and not be too drunk. Sober up during the game. Perhaps we could also meet prior to the game on Friday? Cheers for Friday happy hour prior to the game anyone?
  22. It's because it was the Reds - with Dunn and Griffey they could use an extra lefty for a day, thus Stetter. So they borrow Stetter for a day for an extra lefty against Dunn and Griffey until Gwynn is ready the next day. Had it not been the Reds, or another team with several high-power lefty bats, the move would probably not have been made. Not a big deal.
  23. 8-6 projects to 92.5 wins. I'll take 8-6 with four of the top five guys in the lineup hitting under .230, because I know those guys will not hit the whole season this way.
  24. Funny - I was just going to post a thread looking for a good rub for... Rub some seasoning salt on a chicken, open a can of beer, put the can in its butt, then grill it. Beer-butt chicken!!! And then endaround with the rub mix - outstanding! A great marinade for steak is Lawry's Mesquite marinade - you can get it at any grocery store. Lawry's seasoned salt first, let it absorb for a couple of hours, then marinade in the mesquite mix overnight. Yummy! (Another trick - for less tender cuts of meat I take a fork and poke holes on both sides of the steak before salting/marinading, helps absorb into the meat as well as tenderize it.) Oh, and I definitely second the notion to pin this thread for the summer.
