  1. Hopefully the specialist can lick this problem for good. So many things could be said about this...
  2. http://www.washingtonpost.com...features/2008/beer-madness/index.html Leinie's Sunset Wheat made it into the Washington Post's "beer tournament". Help vote for the WI brew! Miller Chill is in the same bracket, which I know gets a mixed reaction around here (please actually try it before forming an opinion - of the 20-30 people I have introduced this to only one has not liked it), but it is quasi-local being a Miller product so give it some love too.
  3. When you consider "cheap", just like a car look at the total cost of ownership. Look at how much the ink costs too (you probably know that after owning a Lexmark). I highly recommend the lowest level HP All-in-One Printer/Scanner/Copier/Fax. Goes for $140. You don't need the card slot for printing pictures that the more expensive models have. The thing is, you have the copier in case you need it (you'd be surprised how often that comes in handy - copying receipts, documents, etc.), you have the fax in case you need it, you can scan in case you need it. I've had mine for almost four years and no problems. And everyone carries the ink - no hassles there. Some "cheap" printers the ink is expensive or you can't find it.
  4. I prefer Chad "Slow Roller" Moeller
  5. When the drive to work in the morning is MLB on XM, instead of music. When on the drive home from work I listen to ESPN Radio on Sirius at :00, :20, and :40 of each hour for score updates instead of music.
  6. Yep the draft is a total crapshoot. Look at other players from that draft. #44 Joey Votto #50 Micah Owings #54 Dave Bush #57 Jon Lester #60 Jonathan Broxton #64 Brian McCann #68 Chris Snyder #74 Elijah Dukes #80 Curtis Granderson #112 Rich Hill #136 Hayden Penn #166 John Maine #173 Scott Olsen #182 Pat Neshek #193 Matt Capps #294 Howie Kendrick And that's just from the first 10 rounds of that one draft. So of the roughly 270 players picked after Brown in the first 10 rounds of the draft, 16 of them have had somewhat successful major league careers so far. So what are you trying to say? Let's take a look at some of the players picked ahead of Brown that year: #3 - Chris Gruler (Reds) #5 - Clint Everts (Expos) #8 - Scott Moore (Tigers) #10 - Drew Meyer (Rangers) #20 - Denard Span (Twins) #21 - Bobbie Brownlie (Cubs) #27 - Sergio Santos (D-backs) #28 - John Mayberry Jr (Mariners) (wasted pick - didn't sign) #29 - Derick Grigsby (Astros) And I wouldn't put Bryan Bullington (#1), Adam Loewen (#4), Joe Saunders (#12), and Russ Adams (#14) much ahead of Brown either. (Yes, Loewen and Saunders have logged quite a few innings but based on their numbers it is very questionable whether they deserve to be in the majors. The only difference between them and Brown is how much slack they are being given to prove themselves in the majors, which is usually much higher for a pitcher.) Brown had good minor league stats and made it to the majors; in other words, he did better than some picked before him and most picked after him. So he was an average pick for a player at that slot. Big deal.
  7. If Crean had Marquette foul around half court with about 4 seconds left, Georgetown would have had to make the first free throw, miss the second on purpose, get the rebound, and put that rebound in the hoop quickly. I thought about that, but G-town had outrebounded Marquette and Barro had fouled out of the game. So it would have been Hibbert, Summers, and Ewing versus Burke, Mbakwe, and Hayward for the rebound and in that scenario I don't like our chances. Yeah James did a stupid thing, but there's plenty of blame to go around. The free throw shooting, Hayward going 0-8, and McNeal going 5-21 certainly put them in a position where James foul even mattered.
  8. Since the signing, I've been dreaming of heading back to Miller, after Russ has been recalled due to injuries, watching him belt two big ones and then circle the bases as the sunlight gleems off his tinted Oakleys. Here's to dreaming. *Sigh* Branyan going yard twice on Opening Day. Rob Deer and Dale Sveum on Easter Sunday. Joey Meyer's walkoff on Roger Clemens. Gorman Thomas getting standing ovations after striking out in his return to Milwaukee in 1986. Don't know that I'd trade any of these for making the playoffs the last 25 years. Here's to the legends.
  9. This person once dove with Greg Louganis but did not make the Olympic Team. I can think of several responses to this, all of which I'm sure would get me "Strike One" on the conduct policy...
  10. Dumb question: Bonds is a free agent, but is he a type-A free agent? I don't know the rules of that. If so, perhaps teams don't want to give up a #1 draft pick for a player who will likely only play one year.
  11. I had it done seven years ago - best thing I ever did. I was 20-15 after the surgery and now am probably 20-20 (haven't been to the optometrist in a while - need to do that). I had it done in Brookfield at a place on Bluemound, but it wasn't LasikPlus; it was right across the street from a hotel (I think a Hyatt). Same as everyone else - went back to the hotel & took a nap, had a pizza delivered for dinner, went to bed (make sure to wear the shields), and woke up 20-15 the next day. To answer some other questions: 1) Ask how many procedures the doctor has done. The doc who did mine had done something like 25,000. That's all he did all day long. Look for someone who specializes in it, and not an optometrist who does it on the side. 2) Contacts - depends on what kind. Soft contacts you need to be out of for two weeks, hard or gas-permeable (what I had) is a month. Good time to do it is the fall when it is cloudy so you don't need sunglasses. Sun reflecting from snow can be tough with glasses. 3) Make sure to wear the eye shields. Can't emphasize it enough. The #1 cause of screwing it up is people not wearing the shields afterwards and accidentally putting pressure on their eyes when they sleep. 4) Your eyes may be a little drier after the surgery, but seven years later I go through a box of eye drops (~$10) once or twice a year.
  12. So we have our left handed, high OBP, thirdbaseman minus the OBP Actually, his OBP has always been .100 points higher than his BA. The problem has been his average. I'll take his .378 OBP for MIL in 2005. And his .490 SLG that year too. I know it's a minor league deal, but he'd make an interesting September callup...
  13. And when you have the oppurtunity to get all-star talent (like the Bucks have which were both shot down by Kohl which you have skipped over in both of your posts) you take that talent especially when you're not giving up the same talent in return. Here's the thing - would Boozer and Marion be guys who want to be here? Or would they be Gary Payton and complain to get traded. IIRC Marion hasn't been happy in Phoenix... and if he isn't happy in Phoenix contending for championships, how happy will he be in Milwaukee? The killers were how they regressed from Ray Allen to... ???, and the real killer was Dirk Nowitzki (and IIRC Pat Garrity) for Robert "Tractor" Traylor. As for the draft, I don't think the difference between Paul and Bogut offsets the fact that they got the best player in the 2000 draft, Michael Redd, in the 2nd round. All things being equal they've done fairly well with their first round picks. Haislip was a bust, but so was just about everyone after him except Tahshaun Prince. Ford turned out better than everyone picked after him except for David West, Josh Howard, and maybe Barbosa. The pick they gave away in 2006 ended up not hurting them (Cedric Simmons, picked at that slot, has been a bust and only a couple after him are a household name). And we'll see about Yi, but he hasn't been bad.
  14. Make a Minnesota hand warmer Yeah, I thought the Browns one was the winner until I read this one.
  15. So what's your favorite euphemism for "the deuce"? "Pinch a loaf", "burn a mule", "launch a submarine", "make a growler", or "do some construction". I heard one a month or two ago that cracked me up, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was. It wasn't "dropping the kids off at the pool", but was along those lines.
  16. Speaking of hotels, I still have a hotel room available to share for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Thursday I'm staying at the Hampton Inn by the airport - looks like it is close to a subway stop and at $179/night (when I booked it a couple of weeks ago) a good bargain since you can take the subway just about anywhere. Friday and Saturday I bit the big one and cashed in a boatload of my Hilton points and got the Hilton Back Bay - the hot part of town right in the middle of everything. Those rooms are going for $600/night (and I had to cash in 80,000 points to get it), but I'll share it for $150/night with someone. Thursday night I'll share for only $50, but that's because you'll have to take the sofa sleeper (only one bed in the room, but the sofa pulls out into a bed). Free breakfast all of those days because I am Diamond level with Hilton. Friday during the daytime I plan on exploring the city. I have tickets for Friday and Saturday, and since I would have to leave the game early on Sunday anyway to catch my flight I am planning on watching it at a sports bar somewhere.
  17. A buddy of mine (Jak Kraus) was in the Brewers minor league system in the late '90s. Signed as a free agent after 4 years at UW-M. Hit .390 and was second in all of Rookie ball in homers and RBI. Next year got his girlfriend pregnant before spring training, married her, got off to a bad start but recoverd to be around .314 in Beloit until he broke his arm in a collision at first base. Next year backed up Alvin Morrow, former 2nd round pick, at Stockton and with a wife and kid at home to support and making $1000/month playing ball and not starting he quit two months into the season and went home. They don't make squat in the minors. The dollar menu at McD's is a staple of every minor leaguer.

  20. A 3.21 ERA over 280.2 IP, just 14 HR allowed and 78 Ks. Hard to fathom a guy today getting 17 complete games in a year with so few strikeouts Can you imagine what type of a contract those numbers would demand today? I seem to recall an article about him a year or so ago, and it sounded like he was on his way to recovery. Sad to see that he has seriously regressed.
  21. Nothing wrong with interviewing several agents first to see 1) who is inept and who knows what they are talking about, and B) negotiate a commission or rebate from them. There's a lot of agents out there who will be willing to give you back part of their 2.5%, and if you tell them up front you are buying and you are interviewing many agents one of them will give you a little better deal to get your business.
  22. I saw Jackson start in SF against the Giants in 2006. It was perhaps his best game in the majors, which is ironic because it was his last. He gave up only one earned run in 5 IP on 4 hits (but walked four) and his GB:FB ratio was 11:3. He made Bonds look foolish several times, and threw a changeup that made Bonds just about screw himself into the ground. Two reasons not to give up on him: 1) In 2006 his GB:FB ratio in the majors was 60:46 - not bad. 2) The way he made Bonds look he might have a future as a LOOGY

  24. I don't have time to read the whole thread, but there was a quote from him several months ago while he was on the set of Batman and he said something to the effect of, "I took an Ambien the night before and only got one hour of sleep, so last night I took two and I still only got one or two hours of sleep." Ding-ding-ding! The problem is that prescription drugs don't work for everyone; the mechanism of action works for most people but not for all, and when that happens people need to switch to a different drug/molecule/mechanism of action/delivery system and not take more. Unfortunately that's how a lot of people thing about prescription drugs - if it doesn't work, that means I'm not taking enough of them, so they take more and more until... this happens. And like someone else said, just because they had a prescription does not make it legal. You'd be surprised how much prescription drug usage is out there with people going to multiple doctors to get multiple prescriptions. And that is illegal.
