  1. I don't think anyone is just using WAR to vote. It seems like they are using it as just one piece to make their overall decision. Personally, I think its Braun and its really not even close. WAR happens to back that up.I would agree it is Braun and it isnt close if Braun hadnt been hurt. I think that brings it much closer. As has been stated by numerous scouts (although some on this board disagree) Braun is a much better defender. He is not a good defender just much better than Prince. The hitting numbers are eerily similar but he also has 23 stolen bases which is pretty big. I know Prince has not had protection in the lineup so that should be taken into effect as well. I think it is Prince, Braun and Upton. No other guy really seems like a great candidate. I could see Kemp and Tulo if no guy on a contender was having a really good year but those 3 are.
  2. Cubs tie it up 4-4 with St Louis going into the 9th. Cards let 4-1 at one point. I dont like rooting for the Cubs but I will do it for the next three days
  3. Interesting Jayson Stark article on espn.com about the NL MVP. He talks about how wide-open the race is this year. They look at WAR and also get quotes from scouts and executives on the players. Here are some of the thoughts They look at Kemp Tulo and Votto and talk about the fact that their teams are not winning and how that will really hurt them. Talk about how Reyes will be hurt by the injury and a non-playoff team, and how McCann will be hurt by his injury. McCutchen has good numbers but a that the Pirates slide will hurt him. Talk about how Victorino is actually overshadowed by the Phillies pitchers St. Louis big three just dont stand out from each other enough So they think it comes down to three. Braun, Fielder, and Upton. They have a big section debating Braun and Prince. Here are a couple quotes Interesting thoughts on Upton as well. Not sure how it will end up but according to this Prince and Braun are the front-runners in some scouts and execs minds
  4. They have a chance but it is really hard to build a pitching staff through FA just ask the Yankees. They dont have many guys in their system who are starters. Garza is there but will be a free agent in a couple years so they will have to break the bank to keep him. Dempster and Zambrano will be gone. Randy Wells isnt that good. Maybe Cashner could be a starter but this team doesnt have much starting pitching that I could find in the minors. Coleman has been bad in his first call-up. Replacing three spots in a rotation is costly when you dont have pieces to trade for it. Their OF is a mess going forward with Soriano's terrible deal, Byrd getting older, Colvin being unable to hit and Campana not being that good. Jackson could help a lot here The IF has a piece or two. Castro could be really good, Barney doesnt look great, Pena is gone, Ramirez is old, and Soto has regressed They need a lot of work and with a depleted farm system it is going to be hard to fill all those holes through FA
  5. Sickels top 10 for the Cubs coming into the year included a few guys who have really struggled #2 McNutt has not been good at all in AA. #3 Carpenter is now a reliever and not putting great numbers. High K's but also high walks, and hits #4 Jackson has been pretty bad in AAA #5 Hayden Simpson - last years first rounder has been Eric Arnett-like at best. Terrible numbers as a college pitch in rookie ball still #6 Reggie Golden - Young bat who is supposed to be a power guy but not really showing it this year #7 Vitters - Once prime prospect is about to be 22 in AA and has an OPS of .766 #8 Robinson Lopez - mid 5 ERA with very little in the K department #9 Austin Reed - has been brutal. 6 plus ERA in low A #10 Alberto Cabrera - ERA above 6 That is a rough system. Their number one guys Brett Jackson has been really good since being promoted to AAA. And I am sure they had some guys step up this year but going of Sickels start of the year list that is depressing for Cub's fans. I heard they had a good draft though.
  6. Schafer with another home run. That is 4 in 26 games in AAA after 0 in his first 59 games. He has 2 more extra base hits in 26 games at AAA than he did in 50 games at AA.
  7. Is it wrong for me to want to see the Dodgers get two runners on so that the Dodgers have to pinch hitter Kershaw? I dont want them to score obviously but I want Kershaw out of the game pretty badly
  8. I actually said that in the in-game thread. I said Greinke had been so good lately that last night was kind of a ho hum start to me.
  9. One nice thing with Peralta is I feel like the Brewers have always been in a place where they have to bring a pitcher up if he is having some success in AAA because the cupboard is so bare at the big league level. Now we have a good group of solid arms who are all locked in for another year. Like Briggs said we could trade Wolf, whose value is as high as it will be, or we could keep Peralta as a long man spot start guy even though Estrada has been solid in the role. Estrada has seemed much more comfortable as a starter.
  10. This prediction is looking pretty solid as of right now. Made July 28th and he has made 5 starts and his ERA has dropped another .6 points to 3.92
  11. Greinke has great chance to win the much less coveted 2nd Half NL Cy Young that I am sure some sports websites will handout. But if anyone wins it over Halladay it will be a huge shock. Only Lincecum has put up better numbers than Zach's 47 IP, 35 H, 13 BB, 8 ER, 52 K, 1.01 WHIP, and 1.52 ERA. Lincecum is a little better in the ERA but outside of that they have really comparable numbers. Cueto is close but his strikeout numbers are nowhere near as impressive as the other two
  12. That'll show you to work. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Miraculously, the chat room let me enter. If you want to be part of that miracle, stop by. I stopped by the other day when I couldnt get this to work but I dont go often because my wife is not a huge fan of me being complete inattentive for a whole game.
  13. I agree. We have a very legitimate number 1 prospect and Thornburg is not a bad number 2 guys either. Sprinkle in a re-emerging Green and Gamel, Schafer and the draft picks and our system is starting to a look a little less depressing
  14. Unbelievable. So I only can watch on Gameday and I flipped to doing some work on the computer because I thought well I know Gwynn wont hit a home run. Oops
  15. Nice job Hairston! Now keep rolling Zack dont give runs back here.
  16. He's had a number of early-count GB outs. I've watched almost every pitch of his tonight - he's definitely thrown too many un-needed pitches. I also don't think his high FB will get nearly the swing and misses at the MLB level that it does in AAA. Thanks for the info. I just get the updates through here. I am still going to be really excited about him http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  17. Come on Hairston! Do it for all the Brewersfaners who have been calling for you to play a lot
  18. He must not be going deep into the count too much. He is only at 92 pitches through 7 innings
  19. Another opportunity with runners on base. We need to cash in here.
  20. With Peralta, Fiers, Gamel, Green, Schafer, and Gindl there are some solid years going on in Nashville
  21. My thought exactly. I was just signing on to post the exact same thing. Love the pitching right now, but where did the bats go?They had a couple good opportunities tonight but Prince hit a hard grounder to the hole that the Dodgers made a great play on and turned two, and Braun hit a hard ball up the middle with the bases loaded that became a double play. They could easily have 3 runs tonight but unlike a week ago the hits are not finding holes. They struggle without Weeks and Yuni has been back to his old bad self. Hairston isnt hitting and Casey gets a hit here and there but not consistently Our pitchers have been great but both of you are right. We cant keep this up. We cant expect them to throw shutouts or one run games
  22. Well it would have been hard for him to be any better than Estrada was in his start. I am really excited about Peralta. Will he or Thornburg garner attention in prospects rankings
  23. How spoiled have I been by Greinke's pitching lately? I havent been super impressed with him tonight. Then I looked at his numbers again. Man he is good
