  1. I just do not see how Marquette would cover Patterson and Cousins from kentucky. Like Kansas they would be a very tough match up for a smaller team. Marquette hung with Syracuse and could beat them but I would definitely put heavy money on Cuse in that game. They would not be in Cuse's bracket anyway because they avoid rematches in the first two rounds. Duke is the matchup that would favor Marquette the most. So if it held Marquette at an 8/9 would have a 66% chance at a rough match-up in my mind and a 33% chance at a good match up. Not bad but I would much rather be a 7 or 10 seed. The two and three seeds are much weaker than the one seeds. Of that list none really strike fear into me. You can add Michigan State, Wisconsin, WV and Butler as teams that could compete for a 3 seed if they play well in their conference tourneys, but againt none of those teams is head and shoulders above marquette. Marquette is an interesting case because they have struggled with some bad teams, either losing or squeaking out wins, but they have played very good teams really tough. Should be a fun team to watch in the tourney
  2. Marquette played a great game today. Just demolished Louisville. Now Marquette is playing for a seed. Most had them around a 10 earlier, they could move up a couple seeds depending how the last few games go. It is better for them to be a 7 or a 10 though. The 8/9 is rough considering who you get the next round and the top 4 are tough teams this year.
  3. You make good points, but I don't think anyone here was even discussing it in terms of a best picture. I was simply saying that for what it is (a blockbuster action movie) it does really well. Besides Titanic (which is my least favorite Cameron movie) Cameron hasn't really done anything to make me expect good dialogue and acting. The plot for the two Terminator movies was pretty good, but beyond that what were people expecting besides great special effects, awesome action sequences, great imagination, and lots of explosions. Its not like the plot in True Lies, Aliens, or Titanic were anything original. And Cameron's past serious dialogue? "I came back for you Sarah." "On your feet soldier." When its satire it works thanks to Tom Arnold in True Lies. My main point was that it is overrated in my mind. I have heard people call it the best movie ever and I just do not see it. It is one of the favorites for Best Picture and I just do not see it. In terms of blockbuster action it is worth watching but I said in another one of my posts those are not usually my type of movies unless they have great acting and a unique script - like the The Dark Knight. I see why people like it, I just left the IMAX underwhelmed.
  4. You are completely right and that is why I have no problem with it being nominated. It is a visual spectacle. It is something never before seen. However, if is the best ever in one aspect, but average or below in other aspects it is hard for me to give it the nod overall.
  5. I will put down this movie because the plot, dialogue, and acting were all subpar at best. Cameron had 15 years or something to wait for the technology to be ready to make the movie so he could spent a little time work on the plot and dialogue. I do not really think of Star Wars as a best picture type movie either, by the way. Formulaic plots (and yes this was very formulaic) in my mind are not what best picture movies are all about. Give it all the cinematography oscars available, but it is not best picture. A movie needs more than mind-blowing special effects to be good in my mind. I think that is what it comes down to. There is a crowd that is able to lose itself in the special effects and there is a crowd that wants to lose itself in a plot. I am in the latter and thus think Avatar is overrated. I will tell everyone to go watch it, but there is no way I think it deserves best picture or to be in the category of best movie ever like I see some people talking about it as. Edit - I do not mean to sound pompous or imply people who are plot first people are better than others. It is just something I have noticed when talking to friends about movies. A lot of our tastes differ on the grounds of plot/acting vs action/special effects. They usually like movies that make more money so I am probably in the minority
  6. Thanks for pointing that out. So it is just the being in a different city that is different
  7. I really have no clue what is going on but it sure is fun to speculate. I am really intrigued by how this season is going to play out. I am glad they to a risk and went with the alternate reality as the story-telling technique. Who knows if the end will ultimately be satisfactory but you cannot say they weren't original.
  8. Nice to see the Bucks dominating a road game with Bogut having a subpar day. He has been so good lately, he was due an off day. As long as they do not blow their 18 point lead they can pick up a nice road win. Salmons is having another really solid game.
  9. I think there are numerous things like that. 1. Jack having a child 2. Hurley having great "luck" 3. Locke seeming to get along with his dad - there was a comment about a small wedding with his dad there. Maybe he was adopted? Who knows 4. Shannon not coming back with Boone 5. Rose living in LA not New York. I do not know if she had a ring on her finger 6. Desmond being on the plane There are probably others I missed. One thought I had is if Jacob really was trying to get them to come to the island in the original timeline, in the alternate timeline if the island blew-up he would not be trying to get them there. Jack having a kid, Hurley not being unlucky, and Locke like his father may be results of Jacob not trying to shape them to be candidates. This is just going off what "Bad Locke" is saying right now, and since I have never been right on a theory before, outside of some little stuff, I am sure I am wrong.
  10. I know a little about the university. There are students from over 100 countries who attend the university. If you talk to four people you have an opportunity to talk to 4 people from different countries. The city has a heavy Latino population and my friends who live there say english is the second language. They love it there because they say it is like living in foreign country with the benefits of being in the US. Not sure if that helps at all. All i know is the name of the university is very fitting. My wife and I looked at moving down there for wok a couple years back.
  11. Offensively he had 14 points - six on two three pointers but he did get 4 blocks. I only saw some of the first half, but at least four Nankival's points came in the paint on a dunk and a nice post move.
  12. Lost and Psych are the two shows I watch all the time I usually catch Modern Family on Hulu I catch Chuck pretty regularly. Outside I will catch the Office and Bones sometimes. Probably watch Scrubs reruns more than most shows though.
  13. Bogut is just great right now. Salmons has been a really nice pick-up. It allows Jennings to be the 3rd option which is nice. I think he was putting way too much pressure on himself.
  14. A win is a win. It is amazing how many close wins and losses Marquette has. A couple blowout wins but mostly everything has been close. They seem to play to any of their competition. They will be a tough out in the tourney thats for sure.
  15. Marquette is definitely in right now, but I think their resume requires them to not slip up down the stretch. A team like UCONN had a lot more margin for error than Marquette because of their quality wins. Marquette controls their own destiny but bit of a rough patch say losing 2 of 4 and then a first round exit in the tourney (which would not be shocking considering pretty much every Marquette game is close) would live them on the hot seat for sure. Being in the Big East will help them a lot, even though the conference, while the best conference, is not as good as the past couple years.
  16. In the eyes of pollsters and the committee wins always seem to be held more highly than losses, unless the win is against a bad mid-major or something. As a fan I would take a win over a loss any day of the week. I agree with Louis that the teams you lose to matter but so do the teams you beat. The committee is going to look at Marquette's non-conference schedule and even a lot of their wins in the conference and say those are not tournament caliber teams. That will hurt them. The bad losses to DePaul and NC State will off-set a couple of their "good" losses. If they get 11 wins they are in for sure. If they were to lose once or twice down the stretch and then lose in the first round of the Big East tourney they would be in trouble, especially if a couple mid majors lose in their tourneys. Marquette's lack of many high quality wins, will only hurt them if they lose a game or two they should not down the stretch. If that happens then they will be sweating it out. I just do not think they have a ton of margin for error because some of the best parts of their resume are close losses which dont look quite as good when you have bad losses as well.
  17. They will get in the tourney because of a weak bubble but their resume is not really impressive at all. They are something like 2-8 against rpi top 50 teams. They have a big win against Georgetown but after that they have wins against teams like South Florida, Cincy, Xavier, not a lot of impressive wins out there. The Louisville game will be big for them. actually, Xavier is a pretty impresive win. and the win against cincy on the road is also a pretty good win because it was a road game and cincy did sweep uconn, who is looking like a tourney team. what i think will get them in is the 5-0 run they went on in the big east and their close losses (providing they dont fade down the stretch here) You are right on Xavier being an impressive win. However, Marquette really does not have a great resume. Also I do not think a team should get credit for close losses. They should get punished more for a blowout but losing close does not mean you are a tournament team. Wisconsin lost a lot of close games last year but I do not think that helped them in the tournament's eyes. Marquette will get in the tourney but if they lose 2 games down the stretch they are in a lot of trouble. They need to maintain a very nice record to go with a poor record vs the RPI top 50 which the committee looks at
  18. Charlotte is down right now, so the Bucks have a chance to be tied when the night is over. How about the fact that they are only 1 1/2 games out of the 6th spot. Not that I think they will win a series but it would be nice to not get Cleveland or Orlando right away. Boston is good too but it would be kind of fun playing the old guys in the first round. I think we would lose, but it would be fun. Salmons has been a great addition so far.
  19. Bogut is becoming a very good player. He has a double double at the break tonight. I am impressed with how much he has developed.
  21. 1. Mark Rogers - I have wanted him to succeed for a long time. Here is to hoping he stays healthy and improves 2. Lucroy - I just want a solid catcher who is a threat at the plate to do more than hit a weak groundball 3. Odorizzi - I love his makeup 4. Scarpetta - His performance was fun to follow last year 5. Arnett - can you tell I want us to develop pitching this year. I also have soft spots for Komatsu, Jeffress, Schafer, Howell, and Brooks Hall
  22. Completely agree. I really liked this episode. It answered a lot of questions with bringing up a couple more here and there, but nothing huge. It is hard for me to know how much I can believe of the stuff that Bad Locke says. I am excited for how they are going to wrap this up. If the previews show anything it looks like Jack is going to start moving from the mopey guy we saw last season to a more intense/confident guy which is good too.
  23. I got married in EC. Here on some tips. Look at St. Mary's Community Center. It is in Altoona. Much cheaper than most. Buffet style food. Non-profit so no tax and tip is what you decide and not included like everywhere else. Find a template for your invites and print them off at a copy place in town. We used Digicopy. They might have even had the template. The invites with the tear off part are a little cheaper. Depending how big a deal pictures are that can be a huge cost saver. We had a friend who is a really good photographer do it. Got great pictures, paid a fraction of the cost. We did have a friend who is a dj who gave us like a $200 deal We had 300 people at our wedding and spent well under the norm.
  24. If Wilson would have been guarding Manny Harris, Harris would have had 20 plus points. Wilson has a nice offensive game, but so far his defense has not been even average. He gets beat to the lane easily and picks up fouls frequently. Hopefully, the confidence he gained from last nights game, wont simply be on the offensive end.
  25. I understand some of the juco's were brought in to fill out classes and I do not know each situation. So if I generalized I am sorry, but jwill made great points to your post that I wont rehash. The Badgers are in on another guard right now who is a JUCO but that would make 2 in 11 years or something. Not common place at all. Here is a list of majors for players at the two programs I took of a board scout.com. Acker - Comm. Studies, Butler - Undecided (he's a JUNIOR), Buycks - Comm. Studies, Cadougan - Undecided, Cubillan - Undecided (he's a SENIOR but this may be wrong, i heard he was communication), Fulce - Undecided (JUNIOR), Hayward - Social Welfare, Johnson-Odom, Maymon, Otule, Williams - all undecided. Wisconsin Berggren - Undecided, Bohannon - Business Marketing, Bruiser - Undecided, Evans - Business, Gavinski - Human Ecology, Hughes - Life Sciences Communications, Jarmusz - Business, Leuer - Business,Markolf - Finance, Nankivil - Engineering (might kins now), Taylor - Marketing, Wilson - Human Ecology Again I am not saying Wisconsin is way better than Marquette and above them academically, but doesn't this show a difference in the progams a little? Now I am going to give Marquette the benefit and believe the communications department there is very good, because it is usually mocked as a major athletes pick to get by pretty easy. I do not know Marquette's program so I will assume it is good. To act like there isnt even a small difference between the schools is wrong in my mind. I do not want to make it seem like I am bashing Marquette because I am not. I just think there is a difference between who each program lets in. Now it could be a Bo Ryan decision and not an academic instituational decision. However, he has cooled on numerous guys when grades and character issues have popped up - Rodney Williams, Royce White, and Maymon are examples.
