  1. I agree with you on Cam as well although that is probably for another thread. I think he would take a pay cut to stay which would be nice. I do not understand the cart before the horses analogy. A solid bullpen makes your relievers better. Even with a terrible rotation Hoffman almost got 40 saves. That is a lot of chances. You have to believe they will get one pitcher through a trade. They will have Gallardo, Bush, pitcher via trade, and then who knows (Suppan, Parra, Narveson, Butler, FA?, Looper, another trade). The Free Agent pitching crop is terrible so it makes more sense to spend money on a very good closer than a passable at best starting pitcher.
  2. I agree with the sentiments so far. Sign Hoffman as quickly as possible and then move on to the rotation. Hoffman has been very reliable. It is a low risk move and allows us to continue to try to develop a closer for the future.
  3. I would love to see us develop a bullpen of mostly homegrown guys. Axford, Braddock, Wooten, Aguilar, Fiers could go a long. The cost of quality bullpen arms, not just closers, is getting very high and would allow the team to spend money elsewhere. I would like to see them get some impact bats or just solid position players for the lower levels in the next couple drafts. We have Lawrie, Gamel, Escobar, Schafer, Cain, Green, Lucroy, Salome, and Gindl. A couple could be impact bats. A couple could be solid players. However, only Lawrie is in the lower levels, and he wont be for long. Davis and Richardson could be solid players but our lower levels struggled to score runs.
  4. The link reports are going to be fun. At least two guys at each level (3 at most) that I will be excited to watch. I bolded the guys I am excited to follow next year. I love the Wisconsin staff. All five guys (and I would throw Heckathorn in there for a 6th) excite me. The B.C. rotation should be fun with a couple young studs and then two guys who were highly regarded who are trying to find their form with Fredrickson and Seidel. Huntsville might be the most exciting to me, mainly because they are so close. Rogers is my favorite prospect. Rivas has blown up this year and Anundsen could be a nice back of the rotation guy. Nashville is a little less exciting, but I do like Butler and Cappy should be fun to watch just to see how he can do.Where do you have Heckathorn by the way?
  5. I guess I am trying to figure out the Michael Brantley love-fest. With his lack of power people wondered if he would be able to sustain his walk rate because MLB pitchers would go after. Well, in a small-sample size it has not. He has struck out 19 times while walking just 8. That along with little power leaves him with an OPS under .700. Not to mention he has had trouble stealing bases getting caught as many times as he has succeeded. I know this is a small sample size, but his numbers in AAA were not overly impressive either. He could develop into a nice player but to act like he would be a perfect fit for our team next year is wrong to me. The one plus I have heard about Brantley is that his defense is CF is better than what the Brewers system made it out to be. Now I do not know if he is simply okay there or if he has a chance to be a plus defender.
  6. I started posting about our young pitching in another thread and it got be wondering where guys will end up next year. I just kind of threw guys names by teams. Guys like Brooks Hall, Billings, Seth Lintz seem like they will be in rookie ball. Wisconsin should have Ordorizzi, Arnett, Lasker, Bucci, Del Howell and Heckathorn. They probably will do a lot the piggy-back starts again. Brevard will have Scarpetta and Peralta Huntsville will have Rogers, Anundsen, and Rivas. Merklinger could be here as well or in Brevard since he was only there a short time. Nashville will have Butler and to a lesser extent Mike Jones, Dillard (is he going to start) and Chris Cody Braddock is not up there because I just do not know if he will start. If he does toss him into Nashville or Huntsville. Periard will be somewhere trying to make up for a lost season. Hopefully this can be the year Frederickson figures out how to throw some strikes. R.J. Seidel hopes to make up for a lost year and an underwhelming start to his career. Krestalude is at least a guy to keep an eye on. Then you Jeremy Jeffress and who knows where he will be. On top of that we have some interesting bullpen guys in Wooten, Axford, Baron, Aguilar, Fiers and I am probably forgetting others. I am sure I am missing guys, but it was fun to go through and see what we had. Wish some of it was closer to the bigs. Chime in with where you think guys will be and who you are most excited for next year.
  7. The MWL was a 14 team league this year. It will be 16 next year when Bowling Green and Lake County join the Eastern Division. That does not take away anything from three players on this year's Top 20 list. Our three guys were top 14 as well, not just top 20. I think that is what is impressive, with 14 teams our two and three prospects in the league where better than a couple teams number one. Lawrie could be very special and having pitchers like Scarpetta and Peralta get love is exciting as well. We will have a couple solid pitching prospects and each level next year. Wisconsin should have Ordorizzi, Arnett, Lasker, Bucci and Heckathorn. I guess I do not know where all of them will be. Brevard will have Scarpetta and Peralta Huntsville will have Rogers, Anundsen, and Rivas Nashville will have Butler and to a lesser extent Mike Jones
  8. Their career OPS are pretty much identical. Salome is ahead .847 to .844. Salome has a higher level under his belt. Lucroy has shown to more durable over his short time playing 120 plus game in both his full seasons. Salome's high season is 105 with one other above 82. The big difference seems to lie in their defense. Salome's CS % is 28 where Lucroy's is 43 for his minor league career. Arguments can be made for each guy but since Salome is already a level higher I would assume he is the one that could get moved up. His defense and injury history are question marks. Lucroy's first half struggles this year and his having to jump from AA to the majors are his questions with the latter being the bigger one.
  9. There are a lot of questions about what Hardy is worth, so I thought I would post what a Jerry Crasnick article at espn said. This is a quote from the article about Hardy That is an encouraging thing to hear. I am still holding out hope we can get good value for JJ. Melvin should call up this assistant GM and work something out.
  10. Your dislike for Melvin is obvious, but even big J.J. fans like myself recognize Hardy did not even deserve to be in the majors as long as he was this year. At first I thought he seemed to be getting unlucky, then he just looked lost and he has not looked much better in AAA. He needs to get his swing figured out and taking time from Escobar is not the answer.
  11. Farris is starting to grow on me as a prospect because I know a .719 is not great but for the league he is in it is better than it looks. He is somewhere around 23rd in the league in OPS. He is only .19 behind Ben Revere from the Twins who gets a good amount love while be a very similar player, even though Farris is a ton better stealing bases. The problem I have with the Farris supporters is the same I had with the Katin supporters. It is the idea that after every time he has a good game you need to say something like "hey look the guy no one thinks is good had another great game." But, where are those people when the person struggles. Right now the pro-Katin crowd is very quite as he struggles. It is one the thing to point out a guys is doing well, which is all JBriggs did in his first post here, but it another thing to almost beg a debate with the aforementioned type posts. On another note. Caleb at what 20 years old leads the FSL in OPS and Logan Schafer a CF'er! is 6th. I am excited to see how these guys handle the bump to AA next year.
  12. I highly doubt they made the move for Weathers just to get him to set up for next year. i think Melvin realizes how hot and cold many bullpen arms can be and you cannot have too quality guys in your bullpen. Even if the Brewers decide not to sign Hoffman they would need to get a great offer for it to be better than a possible first round pick and a sandwich pick. You are right that the Brewers need quality starters as well, but the reality is there are usually very few in free agency and the ones who are very good are out of our price range. Hoffman is a great option for us. He is low-risk long-term on his one year deal and much more proven than Coffey or anyone else.
  13. If they offered something of value, the Brewers should listen. No I do not think they should. Last I heard Hoffman was a Type A free agent. That means we will either sign him our get a first round (or top half of second round) pick and a sandwich pick. I cannot imagine getting better value than that in return for Hoffman. So we either get high picks or we get another year of Hoffman. If we trade him we would have to give up a pick to get him back. That does not make sense for a team with no internal options at closer.
  14. Ron Santos and is Pat Hughes, mainly because Ron Santos is the worst announcer I have ever heard. I think that is who game05 is talking about. I remember listening to a game and all I remember him say was "Oh Gawd..Oh Gawd..no..no" when a Cubs pitcher threw a ball.
  15. Wisconsin picks up 2 hits in the ninth.
  16. Where do the Brewers have to finish in order to not lose a first round pick if they sign a Type A free agent?
  17. Welch pitches 7 strong giving up no runs. Lucroy has 2 more hits (another double) and scores the only run. Huntsville wins the first game of a double-header. Edit - Lucroy with another double in the night cap. How long is his hitting streak right now? His average is pushing .280. I would have to assume he gets bumped up soon.
  18. I am kind of surprised Lucroy has not been able to get in the Hot Sheet at all this week. He should have at least been in the team photo. His OPS is 1.18 this month, you would have to think that would get him some love.
  19. Where did you see that Homer? It happened today. Narveson got recalled after Calome went to the DL.
  20. I am pretty one would need more than 22 at bats to judge a player.
  21. He also missed what 7 save chances early in the year being hurt. If he is there for those and converts those he would near his goal. He probably gets low 30's in save which is still pretty good. And what is the loss even if he does not want to come back here someone would need to sign him and we would get picks which would be way better than any prospect we could get now. And if no one else wants with having to give up a pick him he would probably have to retire.
  22. No way we should trade Hoffman. We are going to want to bring him back next year and if we keep him he will be a Type A free agent which should keep his suitors to a minimum
  23. Some nice pitching tonight with Rivas, Green, Bush and Scarpetta all pitching very very well.
  24. I am really interested to see how the newly signed group of players fare in the Power 50. Will Davis, Gennett, and Hall be on the list since it was supposed to be done tonight? All three are intriguing prospects and I could easily see them being pretty high. This draft did a great job adding pitching prospects many of who were college guys like Arnett and Heckathorn but also a high upside high school kid like Hall. The bats are intriguing as well. Davis, Richardson, Prince and others from the college ranks and Garfield, Gennett, Walla from the high school ranks. I am really beginning to like our depth in the lower minors. Along with the new guys the month have been good for some of the other prospects like Gindl and Schafer both of whom have made believers out of me. Cain has started to hit lately and Lucroy has been on a month long tear. I am excited to see the next power 50 it is what brought me to this site the first time.
  25. I wonder if we have been able to sign all these picks to over-slot in part because the Brewers were anticipating having higher and more picks for CC and Sheets. Without the extra picks the Brewers had more money to play with and high upside guys like Davis, Hall and Gennett could replace those picks pretty well. Great job getting these picks signed.
